On today's edition of the cast we talk about the plethora of one hit wonders that graced the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks charts over the years, and talk about how their contributions shaped the future of the chart to come. We discuss such artists like Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, Butthole Surfers, Eagle Eye Cherry, Semisonic, Eve 6, Marcy Playground, and a whole lot more and how their one fleeting moment in the sun made for some of the most memorable and catchy tunes of the late 90's. One hit wonders aren't necessarily a bad thing, but for some artists it makes it hard to live up to the success and expectations from their prior hits. I also play a song from Boston's own The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and their massive 1997 breakout hit, "The Impression That I Get".

The Ghost Ship by Richard Barham MiddletonRichard Barham Middleton was born in 1882 in Staines then in Middlesex, but since 1965 part of Surrey. It calls itself Staines upon Thames now.  I checked the 1864 map and then it was a small town surrounded by fields and woods. Even now looking at the satellite, though I see is is a much bigger urbanisation there is still some nice green land around it. But I digress. He died in 1911 in Brussels by suicide (If You Appreciate The Work I've Put In Here - You could buy me a coffee at https://ko-fi.com/tonywalker or join as a Patron for exclusive content here: https://www.patreon.com/barcud)He was educated at Cranbrook school and then went to work as a bank clerk between 1901 and 1907 but lived, the Wiki says ‘affected' a Bohemian lifestyle at night and joined a club called The New Bohemians. He knew Arthur Machen who much admired his work and wrote a preface to the collection of stories in which I found The Ghost Ship. It's available on Gutenberg for free. He became a magazine editor but really wanted to be a poet. He met Raymond Chandler who was put off writing almost because Middleton was so talented and he thought he'd never match it. His most famous poem is The Bathing Boy which is a paean to a beautiful young man swimming. He made very little money as a writer and lived in poverty. He moved to Brussels and aged only 29, he killed himself by drinking chloroform just after his birthday. We have done his winter ghost story, On Brighton Road which is short but good. The Ghost Ship is his most famous ghost story and, unlike On Brighton Road is humorous.  In his biography by Henry Savage, Middleton is said to have claimed he had a pirate for an ancestor who was hanged at Port Royal. But Savage notes that Middleton was not diligent with facts. Noted audio engineer/producer Susan Rogers began her unique career in the late 70s, but she really earned her bona fides when she moved to Minneapolis to assist Prince. She was right by his side during those peak Purple Rain to Sign O the Times years, helping him create, record, log, and document his every creative impulse (she created his famous "Vault"). She shares stories of her experiences that add invaluable color to who Prince was and what he was like to work with. After leaving Prince, she worked with rising indie rock acts like Michael Penn, Edie Brickel and New Bohemians, Public Image Ltd., Paul Westerberg, Geggy Tah, and Barenaked Ladies. For the last 20 years she's been teaching at the Berklee School of Music. Her encyclopedic memory of it all makes for one of the most fascinating conversations we've ever had on the show. Enjoy!

Following up on my first annual "freedom" themed show, this year, I return to the book, You Are Now Less Dumb, to continue sharing about different cognitive biases we all likely have. Last year I touched on "Narrative Bias" (you are a being capable of logic and reason who falls short of that ideal in predictable ways) and "The Backfire Effect" (when your deepest convictions are challenged by contradictory evidence, your beliefs get stronger). This year I turn to "The No True Scotsman Fallacy" (you will shift your definitions to protect your ideologies) and "The Illusion of Asymmetric Insight" (you are driven to create and form groups and then believe others are wrong just because they are others). But first, I talk about "self delusion" from the introduction to the book which gives a nice overview of our general misconceptions. Why do I care about these things? Well because I fancy myself an independent thinker, but the only real way to be sure of that, if surety is even possible, is for me to look for holes in my thinking and this book does a fabulous job of helping me to see where I fall short. So, if you too want to free your mind and be truly independent, then this is the show for you! Here's my article on "unhiddenness."You can hear my accompanying playlist featuring "Dreaming" by Blondie, "Roam" by the B52's, "Freedom" by George Michael, "Holiday" by Madonna, ""Free Your Mind" by En Vogue, "Freedom" by Beyonce, "My Power" by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, and my fave "Revolution" by the Heartless Bastards, lyrics below:Where you going, my friend?Have you forgotten whenThere was a time filled with hope instead of fear that's in your heartThere was a time when life was simple and innocent to startDo you remember?Do you remember?Where you going, my friend?Have you forgotten whenThere was a time when false information wasn't so rampant in the sphereThere was a time when you weren't questioning everything you hearDo you remember?Do you remember?Constantly being advertised, your life commercialized and disguisedAs happiness in pills and potions, fancy threads and cars in motionHypnotized by gilded lies to line the pockets of so fewWhile hungry politicians feed bullshit to the massesTo ensure their statuses and further divide the classesUh-huhAnd you were born with a voice so open up and speak your mindRaise consciousness and elevate how we all relate don't hesitateNo need to be better or smarter than anybody elseLeave judgement at the door for others and yourselfThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindBig Brother's watching you and trying to sell you something newAnd I just want to take away take away the bluesBig Brother's watching you and trying to sell you something newAnd I just want to take away take away the bluesThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionWhen I get up, oh, I get up in the morningAll I really want is the truthOh, when I open my eyes and I get up in the morningAll I really need is the truthYou were born with a voice so open up and speak your mindRaise consciousness and elevate how we all relate don't hesitateNo need to be better or smarter than anybody elseLeave judgement at the door for others and yourselfThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindWhen I get up, oh, I get up in the morningAll I really want is the truthOh, when I open my eyes and I get up in the morningAll I really need is the truthRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindToday's show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston. I’m Danny Lane, the curator of The Music Museum. This exhibit is called The Vietnam War: The Music. Our mission here at the Music Museum is to support all Vietnam Veterans and those who serve the United States, then and now. We thank you for your service. Early-on, in Vietnam, soldiers turned to music as a lifeline to the home front they promised to defend. Rock & roll (R&R) really became rest & relaxation (R&R) for the troops. It was this music that got you through another day, another day closer to going home. Music was a big part of a soldier’s down time that centered within the hooches of Vietnam. The music that was popular during the Vietnam War was, and is still, therapy. There are songs you can remember, and then there are songs you REALLY remember. Many of these songs will have a special meaning for you. A place, a brother, a time gone by. This program is for you, the Vietnam Vets, who will never forget. ***** In this episode we feature a song by a two-tour Vietnam Veteran, Chip Dockery, who served with the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base. His song is a "brag song" for a pilot friend's going home party. It lists the places he has been, the people (mostly forward air controllers) and agencies with which he has worked, and the missions he has flown. It’s called “I’ve Been Everywhere” ****** Our goal with The Vietnam War: The Music is to honor the fallen and the survivors with the music that got them through “just one more day”. Our shows are broadcast around the world. They say thank you & “welcome home” to all Vietnam Vets. There is no opinion offered on the War. It’s all about the music. **** For your service and your sacrifice, this is The Vietnam War: The Music. **** This episode is called “Out Beyond The Wire” ****** ***** Join the conversation on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 **** or by email at dannymemorylane@gmail.com **** In this episode you’ll hear: 1) Volunteers by Jefferson Airplane 2) Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town by Kenny Rogers & The First Edition 3) Welcome Home by Country Joe McDonald 4) You Can't Do That by The Beatles 5) Casey Jones by The Grateful Dead 6) For You by Johnny Cash & Dave Matthews 7) Southbound and Down by Dave Dudley 8) Dancing In The Street by Martha & The Vandellas 9) Tour of Duty by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit 10) Badge by Cream 11) Purple Rain by Prince and The Revolution 12) Almost Cut My Hair by Crosby, Stills & Nash 13) And When I Die by Blood, Sweat & Tears 14) Lay Me Down (Draped in the Red White and Blue) by Elvis Carden 15) She Never Spoke Spanish To Me by The Texas Tornados 16) I've Been Everywhere by Chip Dockery 17) Ooby Dooby by Creedence Clearwater Revival 18) Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere by Neil Young (w/ Crazy Horse) 19) Boys by The Shirelles 20) Coming Home Soldier by Bobby Vinton 21) Abilene by George Hamilton IV 22) Down In The Boondocks by Billy Joe Royal 23) Take It To The Limit by Suzy Bogguss 24) Hanky Panky by Tommy James & The Shondells 25) People Got to Be Free by Dionne Warwick 26) Love Hurts by The Everly Brothers 27) From The Beginning by Emerson, Lake & Palmer 28) I Wanna Grow Up To Be A Politician by The Byrds 29) Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker 30) The Letter by The Box Tops 31) Anna (Go To Him) by Arthur Alexander 32) The Beautiful by Five for Fighting 33) To Love Somebody by Janis Joplin 34) Act Naturally by Buck Owens 35) Queen Of The Highway by The Doors 36) A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall by Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians

Rhodes believes that music heals and that love is real. From her first open-mic performances at the O.K. Hotel, Seattle, to her latest album I Am, these beliefs in the transformative power of song are distilled into gems of quiet intensity that traverse blues, jazz, folk and rock. Her full-length albums include I Am, produced by Johnny Sangster (2017), Elixir (2011), Afriqueen Stare (2003), and Songs of Angels (1999). Additional works that demonstrate Rhodes’ range and virtuosity are Lullabies (2013), a riveting performance of traditional spirituals, On the Boards, Seattle; as well as 2 Old Chicks (2005), a 50-piece orchestral film score, created in collaboration with Doris Bartha and Steve Brush. Rhodes began writing at a young age, composing poems that “always had a melody too.” Skipping class to stay home and learn new instruments, Rhodes found in music a way to go inside herself, and to inspire others to go inside themselves, to learn, to heal, to find love or to leave it behind. One source of continued inspiration for the artist is an autograph, from the poet Maya Angelou, that hangs prominently in her studio, a memento of their meeting at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. Rhodes earned her B.A. in music composition from Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT. Jazz luminaries Bill Lowe and Anthony Braxton were favorite teachers who encouraged her to explore and push beyond any self-imposed boundaries. These lessons have allowed her to continually grow and evolve her music. She has collaborated with musicians including Matt Chamberlain (David Bowie), Brad Houser (Edie Brickell & New Bohemians), Mike Dillon (Ani DiFranco), Eyvind Kang (Bill Frisell), Jeff Fielder (Mark Lanegan), Dan Walker (LeRoy Bell), Jessica Lurie, Keith Lowe (Fiona Apple), Amy Denio, Jessika Kenney, Mike Stone (Wayne Horvitz) and Skerik. Rhodes muses, “It’s easy to be cynical. It takes a lot to be intentional. It takes a lot to love.” I Am takes the listener into love and then heartache, through rebirth, and finally, up into freedom. British composer and electronic producer Circles And Ellipses releases “Burn:Cycle Reworks” via Here & Now Recordings; a follow-up EP to the original soundtrack of the 1994 video game Burn:Cycle, the first ever video game soundtrack to feature orchestral music, consisting of four reimagined electronic compositions. Originally composed and produced by both Chris Whitten and BAFTA-nominated British film score composer, conductor, producer and musician Simon Boswell in the early ‘90s for the adventure video-game title published by Philips Interactive Media, Chris Whitten now returns as Circles And Ellipses to share reworks of this classic game soundtrack. Whitten’s musical journey has been a vast and impressive one so far, from producing classic ‘80s hit-singles such as "What I Am"by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians (which currently boasts 10 million views on YouTube alone), to providing drums for "The Whole of the Moon"by The Waterboys and the legendary Sir Paul McCartney’s 1989 album“Flowers In The Dirt”and joining iconic British rock band Dire Straits on their final world tour from 1991-1992 and once again during their 2017 reunion tour. Chris Whitten is also widely recognised for composing original scores for top media companies, including BBC and Discovery Channel. Circles And Ellipses has just done a Mix for NTS Radio’s Tim Noakes’ ‘Synth Hero Show’ whose previous guests include film composer Clint Mansell, dance duo Orbital, Stranger Things composer Kyle Dixon, and Paul White from R&S Records. Noakes has described Whitten as“cult drum God”. Chris Whitten was born in Wimbledon, just outside London and now lives in the west of England, near Bath and Glastonbury. With a burning desire to pursue a musical career, Whitten left home at the early age of just 16 to study jazz and classical composition at The City Of Leeds College Of Music, although his musical diploma would be cut short in 1979 after picking up more local gigs and eventually embarking on a tour with seminal British jazz-fusion guitarist Gary Boyle. In the early 1980s, producer and guitarist Simon Boswell invited Whitten to perform drums on an album session in Rome. On returning to London, Whitten would contribute to many various styled projects and bands including punk/ funk band Out fronted by local fashion icon and journalist Alix Sharkey, repeated RCA Studio Sessions in Rome, and working as drummer and arranger on several hit albums for celebrated Italian musicians such as Francesco De Gregori, Gianni Morandiand Riccardo Cocciante, collaborating on Cocciante’s 10th studio album with orchestral arranger Paul Buckmaster(Elton John, Miles Davis). Former bandmate Karl Wallinger had since joined Scottish-Irish folk rock band The Waterboys, and in 1984, Whitten would take up drum duties.Chris Whitten performed drums on the hit single “The Whole Of The Moon”, which is still regarded as The Waterboys’“finest hour and signature recording”. Whitten then gained a shining reputation as a prolific freelance studio drummer for artists such as Swing Out Sister and Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders). Co-producer of the original “Burn:Cycle Soundtrack”Simon Boswell currently holds more than 90 credits in film and TV composition, including acclaimed classics such as Phenomena(1985), Santa Sangre(1989), A Midsummer Night’s Dream(1999)and many more. Boswell's record productions from the 1980’s have influenced many other contemporary musicians, notably "Block Rockin' Beats"by UK electronic act The Chemical Brothers. Whitten sees himself as a drummer with a passion for synthesizers. Although he loves the synth sounds of 90’s techno and electronica, Whitten also takes influences from more classic sounds such as the work of Herbie Hancock, Jan Garbarek and Eberhard Weber. As for his electronica inspirations, Whitten has drawn influence from the likes of minimal techno artist Speedy J, early Detroit techno from 69(Carl Craig) and Kenny Larkin, as well UK’s Kirk DeGiorgio and contemporary electronic producer Lone. Whitten’s work as Circles And Ellipses for the “Burn:Cycle Reworks” EP can best be compared to minimal techno maestros such as Stephan Bodzin and Max Cooper.

To say that Brad Houser merely impacted my musical life is hardly true. He almost entirely put me on a course, in fact. I must've seen Critters Buggin' 25 times in Seattle in the 90s and when I couldn't find myself a guitar gig I got myself a bass gig. Brad was my guy. I even started a band with some friends that was our answer (read: attempted rip off) to Critters, an instrumental band consisting of my 3 different basses (4 and 5 string plus fretless), drums and a percussionist, and a clarinetist. So, yeah. Brad had an influence on me. And, as I've said a million times: playing the bass was one of the most important things I've ever done for my guitar playing. So, Brad eventually influenced my guitar playing by my estimations. Getting in to Critters opened doors for me to go back and listen to Miles, Herbie, and some other 70s stuff like Mahavishnu. Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians' debut album had a break out single, What I Am. As a young rock/metal kid it was unusual for me to get into something like that. I wasn't a Deadhead and only appreciated very few things outside of my preferred comfort zone. But not much. Later I realized a huge element to What I Am that drew me in was the interesting bass playing. There was something going on that I'd never heard before which was so musical, complex and busy but not overpowering. I loved it. The bass just didn't stand out in much music I was listening to. So, of course, when I eventually began playing bass I sought out Brad when I heard he lived in Seattle. We didn't get far in lessons, 2 or 3 I think. But, I went and watched him play a ton of Critters Buggin' shows. At one of our lessons he blew my mind when he told me he was taking an African dance class to help with his bass playing. I'd never heard someone speak of such a completely physical relationship to an instrument and performing on it. He became my benchmark bass player and though I knew I'd NEVER be the bassist he is I figured I had to sort out how to fool folks into thinking I belonged in a category of musicianship that he existed in......In this episode of Couch Riffs we talk about some of this stuff. PLUS, Brad's new signature bass coming out with Reverend Guitars. Brad and I stayed friendly over the years and when we would run into each other it was always fun and good to catch. So, when I saw the band was touring to support the new album (which is great) I was super excited to see the Brooklyn date. Brad agreed to appear on Couch Riffs and here are the results. Always great to catch up, Brad. Thank you so much and good luck with the new album and everything you do. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/support

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest this week is the incredible drummer, composer and all-round musical wizard, Matt Chamberlain. Matt is one of the most in-demand studio drummers of the past 20 years, whose eclectic talents found him working in various genres from rock to classical, jazz, and the avant-garde. I first heard Matt with his band in Seattle, Critters Buggin, and then he started appearing on all kinds of great albums through the 90's and 2000's. Chamberlain started playing in the mid 80’s Deep Ellum scene in Dallas where he joined Edie Brickell and New Bohemians. He then moved to NYC and spent a season with the Saturday Night Live Band from 1991 to 1992. After leaving SNL, Chamberlain based himself out of Seattle and embarked on a fruitful career as a gun for hire. He has racked up an impressive list of credits appearing on albums/tours by David Bowie, Fiona Apple, The Master Muscians of Jajouka, Soundgarden, Bill Frisell, Robert Fripp, Tori Amos, Morrissey, Phantogram, Pearl Jam, Kanye West, Bruce Springsteen, The Wallflowers, A Perfect Circle, Willie Nelson, Frank Ocean, Elton John, Brad Mehldau, Randy Newman, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow,  and many others, as well as soundtrack work with Hans Zimmer, Marco Beltrami, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Jon Brion. Enjoy my conversation with Matt Chamberlain, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!
