Daniel Augustin talks life-long friendships through music, working on Rap "Shi!t", and being your own advocate! About Daniel: Daniel is a Haitian American actor, director, writer, and musician born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His entertainment journey started with his discovery and passion for music at his parents church. He was a natural, frequenting the control room, where he learned to manage the soundboard and record audio. By age ten, he became a hip-hop recording artist when he took part in forming the gospel rap group, Mav-7. At age 21, he co-produced and recorded his first solo, Neo-Soul, and hip-hop album titled: I'm Sorry 4 the Delay.   Eager to learn about the other facets of entertainment, Daniel started his television career working as a production assistant on As Seen On TV. This experience catapulted his passion, interest and excitement for the entertainment industry and he became hungry to take on greater roles. Daniel and his wife/creative partner created a production company, Augustin Productions, where they have produced over five short films and created two digital series, Cake (@cake_theseries), which released on IGTV and Kinfolk (@kinfolktheseries). With these projects, he combined his love and expertise on developing the music, production, editing and directing. His series Kinfolk was widely recognized and selected into Tribeca's 2022 Creator's Market. With so much success behind the camera, it's no surprise Daniel is as impressive (not to mention charming) in front of the camera as well! He has been featured on the hit series Grey's Anatomy and has notable recurring roles on the highly popular spinoff Hulu series How I Met Your Father, alongside Hilary Duff, and Hulu's Wu-Tang: An American Saga. Daniel is most known from his fan-favorite role as Maurice on the HBO Max hit comedy series Rap Sh!t. Maurice is the lead Shawna's (Aida Osman) friend and co-worker at the Miami hotel. Together they start a fraud ring, along the way blurring the lines of friendship and romance. Rap Sh!t, which has an astounding 100% rotten tomatoes score, is an inclusive and inspirational comedy series about two estranged high school friends who through both the dream of trying to become rappers and the need to survive, decide to try to break into the music industry. The series is inspired by the real story of the founding and later success of the rap duo City Girls.  Daniels undeniable talent and impression he made on Season 1 landed him as a series regular on Rap Sh!t Season 2, produced by the incomparable Issa Rae (creator of standout comedy series HBO's Insecure). He is excited to show the world what is in store for Maurice in Season 2! In his free time Daniel enjoys boxing, playing basketball, creating music, and reading. Most recently, he's edited several episodes on season 3 of Hulu's Wu-Tang: An American Saga, including the first-ever episode written and directed by co-creator The RZA, and season 2 of Peacock's Bel-Air, including the season premiere and finale. As an editor, he is committed to making bold choices, protecting the story, and bringing the best version of the director's vision to life. Throughout his career, Marc has worked on an impressive list of acclaimed productions, including Emmy and Eddie award-winning Hacks, NAACP-nominated Our Kind of People, Lee Daniels' Star, the First Run Film Festival award-winner Oakland in Blue, and Fantasia Film Festival winner Bullshit. Marc discovered his passion for editing while working on his first short film on a 16mm Steenbeck editing machine. While Marc pursued his MFA degree in Film & TV Production at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, he wrote and directed several short films, including award-winner My Avatar, which premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival. Originally from Montreal, Canada, Marc has lived in Italy, Scotland, Singapore, Vietnam and Japan. He currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter.

This week we interviewed the the legendary Rodney Barnes. Rodney Barnes is an American screenwriter and producer. Barnes has written and produced The Boondocks, My Wife and Kids, Everybody Hates Chris, Those Who Can't, Marvel's Runaways, American Gods, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, and is currently an executive producer/writer on HBO's Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. Join us we unpack some of his past and present projects.

Nijla Mu'min is a writer and filmmaker from the East Bay Area. Her work is informed by poetry, photography, fiction, and dance. Named one of 25 New Faces of Independent Film by Filmmaker Magazine in 2017, she tells stories about Black girls and women who find themselves between worlds and identities.  Her short films have screened at festivals across the country. Her filmmaking and screenwriting have been supported by the Sundance Institute, IFP, Film Independent, Women In Film LA, and the Princess Grace Foundation. In 2011, she worked as a Production Assistant on Ava DuVernay's film, Middle of Nowhere. In 2014, she was selected for the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Intensive, and she was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Screenplay at the 2014 Urbanworld Film Festival, for her script Noor. Nijla attended the 2017 Sundance Institute Sound and Music Design Lab for Jinn. Her short film Dream was acquired by Issa Rae Productions for online streaming in 2017.  Her debut feature film, Jinn, starring Zoe Renee, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Simone Missick, premiered at the 2018 South By Southwest Film Festival, where she won the Special Jury Recognition Award for Screenwriting. In 2018, she directed an episode of Ava DuVernay's critically-acclaimed series "Queen Sugar.” Jinn, a New York Times Critic's pick, was released in November 2018 by Orion Classics, and is currently streaming on Amazon. In 2021, she directed an episode of “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” for Hulu. She is currently developing her second feature film, Mosswood Park. She is a 2013 graduate of CalArts MFA Film Directing and Creative Writing Programs, and a 2007 graduate of UC Berkeley, where studied in June Jordan's Poetry for the People Program.

Candi is with me this week to talk to y'all about a show you should absolutely be watching, Wu-Tang: An American Saga.I was drawn to this show because I love Wu-Tang Clan so very, very much. We get into our history with the group and what their catalog has meant to us.  But let me be VERY clear, you do not have to be a Wu-Tang Clan fan (although, why wouldn't you be?) nor do you have to even know who Wu-Tang is (again, why wouldn't you know?) to enjoy this show because at its core, it is excellent storytelling and equally amazing acting.  Good television is good television!Normally, I would do a discussion about the pilot episode as a gateway for listeners to a show. But I couldn't resist the spectacular episode 6 of season 2 - "Protect Ya Neck" - for the topic of this discussion.  It perfectly exemplifies why this show is much see television. And Candi, who had not watched any of the series before, agreed that it was a perfectly fine introduction to the show and she did not feel lost - so take the leap!
