Poppy and Geoff Spencer are Relationship Experts based in Sarasota, Florida and authors of the hugely successful book One Billion Seconds. Today we talk about relationships in and out of the workplace, and how to get more out of each relationship in a positive way. Many relationships fail because there’s a lack of communication skills and maturity, which leads to misunderstandings. Poppy and Geoff help people understand how relationships work and how to avoid the mistakes they made in their relationship. Relationships In Business and Life Many people are unaware that 2nd and 3rd marriages fail more than 1st marriages and the reason this happens is poor communication. If the underlying problem continues to exits, problems will keep repeating themselves. Spouse & Partners Working Together The are many reasons some spouses and partners can and cannot work well together, which is why the hierarchy of the business relationship is so important? Who is in charge of marketing, sales, etc? Poppy & Geoff also discussed:  Why you need to clearly define work and home, even if you work from home. Well defined roles are important for a partnership to prosper.  Why you need to learn to see things differently Spouses and partners have a perfect opportunity to balance each other. Having two sets of eyes and ears can be very powerful in the workplace. You need to appreciate each other's skills REFRAMING: Two heads are better than one Let's Blame Evolution Evolution has taught us to survive. We have negative thoughts four times more than positive thoughts as a survival mechanism. It’s a caveman protection thing. Thousands of years ago we were always on the lookout for Saber-Tooth Tigers, but today it’s an emotional Saber-Tooth Tiger. Fear makes us think negatively, and our thoughts affect our actions. Myer Briggs Type Indicator – MBTI (Wikipedia): The Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an introspective self-report questionnaire with the purpose of indicating differing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world around them and make decisions. For example are you:  Extroverted / Introverted Sensory / Intuitive A Thinker / A Feeler In regards to your partner or spouse, when you understand each other's TYPE you will work better together. However, this applies to everyone in your business, right up to the CEO of the company.  No TYPE is better or worse, right or wrong, it’s just a preference for one or the other, just like being left or right handed. Your TYPE is not set in stone. You will only have a preference for one or the other, but when it is identified, it gives you the opportunity to work on the less dominate preference.  It's the same principle when a left-handed people teach themselves to use their right hand for specific tasks.   It’s About Awareness Once you are aware of your dominant preference, you can work on your less dominant preference. For example, you may be an extrovert in social situations but an introvert in public situations. When you’re comfortable with your skill, you will perform better, and your skills will develop as you mature. Monday Morning Tip Start your day with GRATITUDE and AFFIRMATION for others. This will set the tone for the next 24 hours. Ask the question as you drive to work in the morning about on fo your team members, or business partner. “What’s the ‘one-thing’ that I most value about this person and then share it with that person when you get to work. It will make their day.  If you have any questions about this podcast or blog article, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can make contact with Poppy and Geoff on one of the links below.  Poppy & Geoff’s Podcast - The Relationship Restaurant My interview on their show - Ep #25: Walk The Talk The Emotional Clock - TBC Website: poppyandgeoff.com Facebook: Poppy and Geoff – Relational Experts Instagram: @poppyandgeoff Twitter: RelationalATeam If you liked this podcast you would also enjoy: Episode #2: Communication, Persuasion & Influence with Dave Frees Episode #35: Mastering Your Mindset with Deb Johnstone It's No Secret Business Conference: August 17th - 18th Cairns 2018 This year's theme is 'Communication, Persuasion and Influence'. David M Frees will be the Keynote Speaker for this event, and he is coming all the way from Pennsylvania, USA, and there will be eight other speakers over the two days. Did it bring tears to your eyes as you saw 600 people in line on Sunday in Orlando to donate blood? Often, some like to get right down to it and find out who’s fault it is. While it is one way to sort through our despair and anger, it is not very productive. Ultimately, blame feels empty. Well-trained heroic law enforcement and SWAT teams deftly managed the devastating mass shooting in Orlando on Sunday. Although we feel enormous grief and anger over the loss of so many, pointing fingers at the how’s, why’s, and motivations of the horrific situation won’t bring fifty loved ones back; won’t immediately heal the wounds of so many. What can we do? Not point fingers. For Geoff, the tragedy on Sunday brought back distinct memories from 14 years and 9 months ago. The horror. The waiting to learn. When Geoff’s brother died in the World Trade Center, yes, we felt despair and anger. Geoff quickly discovered the healthiest thing to do was not carry around more ire and blame. When friends discovered the loss of Geoff’s brother, they literally and figuratively hugged the family for weeks and months: baked goods, visits, phone calls, flowers, all cloaked in tender hugs. Community hearts open, they stepped up to be the best versions of themselves. A few days after 9/11, Geoff’s sister-in-law and her friend went to a lady’s boutique to purchase something suitable for the memorial service. When the salesperson discovered the occasion from the friend, the salesperson pulled five articles of clothing on hangers, accessories—with high-end price tags that she did not show the widow—wrapped them, and gently shepherded them to the door. No monies exchanged hands; just hearts wanting to help. When Geoff’s sister-in-law’s mother went to the stationery story to purchase paper goods for the home gathering following the funeral, the sales person did the same thing: she filled several bags with pretty napkins, plates, forks, and shooed her out the door. “I made a decision that this isn’t the way his life story is going to end. Not with tragedy and horror. That is not going to be my brother’s legacy,” Geoff said, in one of many interviews, in churches and the media. Let’s redirect our grief and extend energy toward the families and friends of more than 100 people. Rally around them. We gave blood here in Sarasota. Florida, to backfill the supplies that hours before, had been shipped to Orlando. The SRO crowds in the reception area—filled to capacity—didn’t balk about the two-hour wait time. (These might be the same people who get upset at a two-minute traffic light.) Perspectives shift. Re-purposing our grief and anger in this way is a positive step. Geoff finished a project his brother had started—rebuilding the family’s sailboat. Friends eagerly helped in any way they could: advice, paint, labor, supplies. On Sunday, as loved ones waited in an agonizing vigil at the Orlando Regional Medical Center, friends and strangers held hands. Albeit small, this helps. The very best is not to point fingers. The very best is to support the families. “I said to my son nearly 15 years ago, ‘You’ve seen the worst of what mankind can do. Pay close attention, because from this point on, you’ll see the very best of what mankind can do.’” Poppy and Geoff Spencer are relationship coaches and authors of 1 Billion Seconds. Geoff lost his brother on 9/11 in the World Trade Centers in New York City. They live in Sarasota, FL., and can be found online at http://1billionseconds.com and www.relationalcoaches.com. They lost each other as young adults but found one another 32 years, or 1 billion seconds later and are living happily ever after.
