iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon In this special episode I’m joined by touring veteran Ryan Philip George and clinical psychologist Dr. Chayim Newman, core members of the team behind the Tour Health Research Initiative. Launched by a small team of psychologists, researchers, and touring professionals who work closely with and care deeply about the well-being of touring personnel, they are committed to the development of scientific, evidence-based strategies to improve the health and mental health of touring artists and crew members. The Tour Health Research Initiative is a comprehensive scientific study of health and mental health among touring professionals. In recent years, health and mental health issues in the music industry, and especially in the touring sector, have become a well-publicized topic. It has been addressed in panels at conferences, in industry magazine articles, and in countless blogs and posts on social media. This survey is the first phase of the Tour Health Research Initiative. It’s an attempt to gather and analyze detailed information about the nuances of what impacts the health and mental health of touring professionals. The survey has been IRB approved to ensure that all research is conducted in an ethically and scientifically appropriate manner. Well, this is IT! The big 100! Thank you so much for tuning-in and joining me on this epic journey of bringing you the stories behind the men and women who make the music and film industry tick day after day, night after night, mile after mile. A dreamer, an innovator, and a self-proclaimed procrastinator, Steve Remote doubled-down on his career, and at the age of eighteen years old, knew his destiny lay in following his own path, and forging a career for himself in the audio industry. He reasoned that the money he would spend on school would serve him better if spent on recording equipment to capture some of New York’s most daring bands of the 1970’s. Since that time Steve has built a formidable fleet of mobile recording trucks and has captured artists ranging from The Band Called Fuse, Dropkick Murphy’s, Blink 182, Wilco, New York Dolls, and many more. Thank you for joining me this week for our 99th episode, my guest is Jason Sprinzen, author of the forthcoming book about legendary sound and lighting company, SHOWCO. A native New Yorker, vintage guitar expert, and vintage t-shirt collector, Jason has always been fascinated by the 1970's Rock 'n' Roll scene. He was still in grade school when he first laid eyes on the SHOWCO logo. Over the years, he would see it again and again in photos worn on the t-shirts of his favorite rock stars. Already an avid collector of vintage rock t-shirts, Jason soon discovered that some of the most coveted rock tees around are SHOWCO shirts from the 1970's. By 2007, Jason's curiosity as to just what role this mysterious company had played in the concert tours of his favorite classic rock bands had become insatiable. Discovering that little-known SHOWCO was the premier sound and lighting company for most of the major touring bands throughout the 1970's immediately led to a desire to learn more, and ultimately suggested that he write a book to tell the story. Today’s episode is sponsored by Airturn, ShowPro Beard Co., and Gig-Gear.
Sledgehammer audio. That’s how Emmy award-winning FOH Engineer Dave Natale describes his approach. I take it to mean no frills, no fancy effects, nothing that gets in the way of a pure, clean, and loud mix. Since 1981 Dave has mixed some of the top grossing acts of the last few decades starting with Asia’s Heat of the Moment tour. From there, he has gone on to mix for Tina Turner, Motley Crue, Joe Cocker, Fleetwood Mac, Lionel Ritchie, and of course, The Rolling Stones, for whom he has mixed since the A Bigger Bang world tour in 2004. Dave still mixes on an analog console, preferring to remain true to the tools that he is most comfortable with, and the tools that he feels will serve him the best. When he’s not on the road he can be found behind the FOH desk at any number of award shows throughout the year. If you need any further information as to just how good Dave is at his job, look no further than page 490 of Keith Richards’ autobiography, Life. Today’s episode is sponsored by ShoPro Beard Co., & Gig-Gear.com.
While I was in Los Angeles for the NAMM show, I had the privilege of sitting down with FOH Engineer Lucie Barinkova to chat with her about her career and hear about her incredible childhood, growing up in Czechoslovakia, and her families’ eventual escape to an Austrian refugee camp in 1989. Lucie’s baptism into the world of live sound came at age 17, when her boyfriend left alone her to mix the Punk band Hoi Polloi. Three painful feedback-filled hours later she was hooked, and vowed to redeem herself, which she has successfully done, touring with artists such as RZA from Wutang, Odesza, Spoon, Banks & Steelz, Tom Tom Club, The B52’s, and Thundercat.
