From the unexpected VIP invitation by STARTO Entertainment to the electrifying atmosphere of the city, we share our journey of surprise and delight. Our VIP treatment made us feel like newcomers, savoring each moment with a renewed sense of wonder. The concert was a spectacular blend of charisma and connection, where the band's classic tuxedos and art deco venue created a Broadway-like atmosphere. Each performer brought their own unique energy, with unforgettable moments like Umi's adorable interactions and Genta's crowd-favorite chant. The performers' joyful engagement with the audience was infectious, especially during high-energy numbers like "Level Up," leaving us with a sense of "concert amnesia" from the overwhelming excitement. The dedication of Travis Japan shone through in personal anecdotes and a surprise "Katy Perry song", making the experience even more memorable.Beyond the music, we dive into behind-the-scenes stories, recounting our exhilarating encounter with the band after the show. Featured Musicians: 8-Bit Big Band The Video: [After THE JUMP: The things said.] --------------------- 1. Ohio State After Review starts at the top. Defensively it was an NFL game. Michigan unleashed a dizzying array of coverages to hide McCord's leverage from him, and Ryan Day had all kinds of motions and switches to uncover it. The game turned on Mason Graham, who allowed Michigan to keep the pressure on McCord and play with an extra defender in the secondary because OSU could not run on him. Hutchinson-level? Not yet, but Hutchinson before his injury in 2020, where this guy is an All-American. Rod Moore was back to himself. Sainristil isn't a vet at outside cornerback, McBurrows is a good nickel. Offensively there was a lot left on the table. Michigan maximized its RPS wins, Corum's run was RPS+1 but also the biggest play in Michigan football history? JJ almost had a TD on the throwback to Johnson, who didn't recognize he had a Daylen Baldwin opportunity. Run game limited because Tyliek Williams played out of his mind. Going to be a negative in the run game charting for the first time in years, Barnhart especially. But he was their best in pass pro. Do. Not. Leave. JTT. Unblocked. 2. Iowa Preview: Offense starts at 22:44 Abominable, worst in the Power 5. Their receivers are a bad match for their QB, who needs a big target more than a good route. Injured TEs and OL who run a lot of stretch and counter trey: the kind of team Michigan should be best able to defend. Mitigator: Michigan likes to leave their safeties back and subject their DTs to doubles, while teams have been suffocating Iowa specifically because you can bring down your safeties and their RB will break a tackle for 50 yards once every three games. 3. Iowa Preview: Defense starts at 36:59 Excellent as always, with a lot more talent than we're used to. Five-star safety is playing like one, safety-ish linebacker from Virginia is athletic and their best pass-rusher. Plus the usual array of Iowa types. We wonder if their big-butted WLB is grading out so well (87 to PFF, over 90 in coverage) because he's more than a match for Big Ten West competition, but will get dusted if he has to keep up with Donovan Edwards. Missing Cooper DeJean but CBs have been fine. Again: competition question mark, and their DL isn't great at pass-rushing, so there's an opportunity for explosives except they take that away by playing soft cover 2. If they do that Michigan will have to grind them down like last year, but can they without Zinter? Their punter is incredible. Their backup kicker had to kick the game-winner against Nebraska. 4. The Other Conference Championships + Playoff Talk starts at 56:41 We go in order, starting with Washington-Oregon, which is not a 10-point game like Vegas has it. Oregon has been playing fantastic of late and Washington keeps needing to TCU its way through Pac-12 teams. But remember back when they played Washington had that game until Oregon surged back. Texas-Oklahoma State is the biggest spread, want to root for our old friend at QB but also rooting for Texas to get in to keep out the unwanted SEC teams and Ohio State. Georgia could lose to Bama, which is chaos, and we talk more about the committee's choices than the game. FSU beating Louisville would mean FSU goes ahead of any 1-loss team, and if Georgia complains about getting Oregon as the 4-seed they should pound sand. We don't believe in conspiracies; the committee cares about who wins the games, not what ESPN talking heads say to prop up the SEC. A Playoff without any SEC teams would be right, glorious, and absolutely deserved. About the Featured Musician: 8-BIT BAND We're back to letting Seth pick out the songs, so I'm going to nerd out and show you what I've been writing to for a lot of the year. It is this 25+ member orchestra of amazing jazz musicians who come together off their various projects to compose and produce big band versions of videogame music from our childhoods. I could describe further but Adam Neely, who's one of my favorite video essayists (one of the people worth getting a Nebula subscription for), has a 30-minute video on it. He also plays bass. The 8-Bit Band is playing December 15th at Sony Hall in New York, and January 13th at the Ferguson Center in Newport News. Song choices: Chrono Trigger Main Theme Bob-Omb Battlefield Still Alive Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken now now, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat

We had the pleasure of interviewing Reyna Roberts over Zoom video!Breakout country artist and showstopping performer Reyna Roberts released her debut album Bad Girl Bible, Vol 1 on Friday September 8th (via EMPIRE Nashville). This new album follows the success of previously released singles off the album “Country Club” “One Way Street,” and “Louisiana” which have seen a great response from press and fans alike, with Wonderland Magazine stating, “Roberts' heartfelt lyrics capture the universal theme of unrequited love, striking a chord with listeners worldwide.” “Country Club” specifically is going viral across socials with posts on Hollywood Unlocked, The Neighborhood Talk and more! Focus track off the album “Miranda” was inspired by Miranda Lambert, Johnny Cash and Beyonce, with those influences also being seen in the music video for “Miranda”. Bad Girl Bible, Vol 1 is already receiving rave reviews from press with, American Songwriter describing Roberts debut album as “songwriter salvation”.Coinciding with the release of her debut album Reyna is being featured on billboards in Nashville and in New York City where she has been in town for New York Fashion Week attending shows. On Saturday Reyna made her debut at New York Fashion Week walking in the Utierre fashion show at the Dreamland After Dark show at Sony Hall. The fiery singer-songwriter has also recently partnered with The General Insurance, Amazon Prime, Grammy Museum, CMT, CMA, Amazon Music, Bud Light, Tennessee Titans, Stella Rosa, NASCAR and more! When asked about the release of her debut album Bad Girl Bible, Vol 1, Reyna said, “Bad Girl Bible, Vol. 1 is the first half of my debut double album. This is my story of being in love, on the run, my journey through Hell, and ultimately God's salvation. I'm excited about this debut album because people will get to see a full picture of who I truly am. I'm a writer on every song and I also co-produced many of the songs as well, because I had a specific vision for each one- that also included detailed visuals. I spent countless days and nights going over every detail for this album. My goal was to make sure there was personality and character throughout the entire project, so the audience can experience my journey on every level. This album is the truest reflection of my sound as an artist. Even though you hear some country trap and country pop early on. You feel like you're on the run with me, and my sound becomes more outlaw country the darker the journey becomes. This is my Old Testament.”Roberts continues blazing a trail toward success, receiving high praise from the industry and her peers. Roberts has opened for Reba McEntire, toured with country artist Jamey Johnson, and has performed with Luke Combs. Her music is “hard-hitting and anthemic” (Rolling Stone, Rolling Stone Country), “lively and energetic” (Billboard), and she has created songs for ESPN, Apple TV +, NFL, and Hallmark Channel. She has been featured in People, New York Times, Taste of Country, The Boot, Music Now, Wide Open Country, and many other publications, demonstrating that her music resonates with fans and critics alike. A U.S. celebration tour is set to begin October 26 in Woodstock, GA continuing through December 2nd in Memphis, TN. More dates are expected to be announced soon, see below for the initial itinerary and full details. In addition, their 1993 self-titled debut album, a timeless classic, will be reissued on October 20, 2023, and offered on vinyl for the first time igniting a wave of nostalgia and excitement among fans. Adding to the anticipation of this re-release, the band went back into the studio with longtime collaborator and multi-platinum producer Marti Frederiksen and recorded two brand new songs. “Blinded By the Sun” and “Are You In There Anymore,” are set to be released as a special 7” vinyl simultaneously. As founding member Damon Johnson explains of reuniting, “It was our manager, Kevin, who suggested we do this now after hearing from fans at my other shows who kept asking ‘when is Brother Cane coming back?' After Glenn and I had loosely talked over the years of playing music together again, we all felt the time was right for us now.” Co-founding member, Glenn Maxey echoes the same sentiment, “Seldom does a person get the chance to relive a dream that they pursued in their twenties. It's hard to put into words. I'm just extremely grateful for the chance to play great music with great friends at this time in my life. Let's go!” As they hit the stage once again, fans can anticipate the live renditions of the band's chart-topping favorites (“Got No Shame”, “And Fools Shine On”, “I Lie In The Bed I Make” and more), each performance capturing the energy and essence of Brother Cane's signature sound while reigniting the passion that made them favorites of their generation. This highly anticipated reunion tour promises to deliver an unforgettable experience, as they take audiences on a nostalgic journey through their extensive catalog while also introducing some exciting new material. Brother Cane's resurgence serves as a testament to the enduring power of their music. At the heart of Brother Cane's long-awaited reunion are its founding members, Johnson (lead vocals, guitar) and Maxey (bass) who originally formed the band in 1991 in their hometown of Birmingham, AL. Johnson's distinctive guitar skills, vocals, and captivating stage presence, combined with Maxey's solid bass lines and rhythmic foundation, formed the core of the band's signature sound. Brother Cane found immediate success with the release of their self-titled debut album which delivered three singles: “Got No Shame”, “That Don't Satisfy Me,” and “Hard Act to Follow” with “Got No Shame” reaching #1 on the Mainstream Rock charts earning the band U.S. tours with Aerosmith, Robert Plant and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The reunion of these talented and road tested musicians brings an added sense of authenticity and excitement to the tour. The chemistry between Damon and Glenn has stood the test of time, as their musical connection effortlessly translates into electrifying live performances. With their reunion, fans can expect a renewed energy and a deep sense of camaraderie on stage, as the founding members of Brother Cane join forces once again to captivate audiences with their raw talent and unwavering passion for their craft. Professional Makeup Artists Paige Rabinowitz and Christina Vida join me in a round table chat debunking common special effects faux pas (not all blood is made for eyes or mouths y'all) and going over the basics of how to use common SFX products from beginner to advanced levels. We hope you find this episode helpful and have a great time this halloween not ripping your eyebrows off with pros-aide! Her journey through the world of makeup and hair started as a love for FX makeup over 6 years ago while in film school which snowballed into a full fledged career as a makeup artist and licensed hairstylist and has taken on a beautiful life of its own. Her slightly chaotic journey through the industry has taken her from CLT to NYC and back again and she's loved every second of it. Christina Vida is a native New Yorker, born and raised in the South Bronx. Christina is a professional special effects makeup artist for the last seven years, working primarily in tv/film. Her shift towards the makeup industry came after working ten years in healthcare. A career where she incorporates bedside manner into her chair-side manner. Broadway star Jay Armstrong Johnson (On the Town, The Phantom of the Opera) joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul to discuss acts of kindness on Broadway, his Hocus Pocus-inspired benefit concert I Put A Spell on You and more! Over the course of his 5 Broadway shows, Jay Armstrong Johnson has cemented himself as a triple threat. From his debut in Hair, which he shares a kind story about during our chat, to his more recent turn as Raoul in Phantom of the Opera's 30th anniversary year, Jay is always a standout. Following Phantom, Jay originated the role of Banko in Roundabout Theatre Company's world premiere show Scotland, PA. His performance earned him critical nominations from both the Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical. He was also the recipient of a 2020 Outer Critics Circle Award Honor for his performance. Jay's other Broadway credits include the original casts of Catch Me if You Can, Hands on a Hardbody, and the celebrated revival of On the Town. On screen, Jay is also known to audiences worldwide as genius hacker Will Olsen in ABC's Quantico. Jay created the annual live show I Put A Spell on You as a tribute to the beloved cult classic movie Hocus Pocus with larger-than-life performances and choreography, over-the-top costumes and makeup and a healthy dose of Broadway magic. In their search to find beauty, youth and immortality, the bewitching and beloved Sanderson Sisters return from the dead and gather their most famous friends to help them lure the children of New York. This year, those famous friends include Broadway stars like Gavin Creel, Krista Rodriguez, Robyn Hurder and more. The show will be ALIVE at Sony Hall in Times Square on October 23 at 8PM. Most importantly, it benefits Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Tickets start at $35 for the dance floor and are on sale now at broadwaycares.org/spell. Got kindness tips or stories? The only thing more challenging than securing a big hit on Broadway is figuring out how to follow it up with another big hit. For the team of the juggernaut musical HAIRSPRAY, that follow up was a musical adaptation of Stephen Spielberg's hit film CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. And while this story of America's famed juvenile conman may not have been the resounding success they'd hoped for, there is still plenty to sing about. This week we welcome original Broadway cast member Jay Armstrong Johnson (HAIR, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) to stroll down memory lane and explore the soul of Frank Abagnale Jr, the glory of an amazing female ensemble, and... maypoles?? ZZ Top is one of my favorite bands and I'm trying to write this description quickly. I'm joined by Marc Stone (https://marcstonenola.wixsite.com/mysite). Marc is a terrific guitar player and roots music historian who has been a standout presence in New Orleans since the 1990s, playing alongside legends of Funk, Zydeco, RnB and Blues on stages across the globe. Right now, Marc is touring with funk guitar icon Leo Nocentelli (https://leonocentelli.com/)of The Meters behind Leo's historic rediscovered 1971 acoustic masterpiece "Another Side.” As we mention in the interview, they're playing in my former hometown of Hartford Connecticut at Infinity Hall tonight. Leo and Marc play at New York's Sony Hall on Sept. 24, at Philly's Ardmore Concert hall on Sept. 25 at the Hamilton in Washington DC on the 27th. Stone has been called a band-leading force in the Crescent City known for his fusion of modern and traditional blues, soul and funk —a sound he calls ‘roots in the present tense'" by repeat CDC podcast guest Alexander Zaitchik. He must like being called that because it's on his website, along with the following two paragraphs: When he's not on stage or in the studio, Marc can be found behind the mic at New Orleans' iconic radio sender, WWOZ 90.7-fm, celebrating 20 years hosting of his weekly “Soul Serenade” or spinning fine and funky vinyl at clubs and events. Stone is equally at home fronting his own band, leading intricate all star projects, and tearing it up for packed houses with just a guitar and a mic. Making the best of the pandemic shut down, Stone went to work on a new album to follow up 2019's solo outing “Live at Tipitina's”, which garnered him nominations from New Orleans top cultural publications for both Best Blues Album and Best Blues Performer. The result is “Shining Like A Diamond”, his first full length studio release since 2015. The album features an incredible line up and showcases Stone's soulful vocals, masterful touch on guitar, 8 string Dobro and lap steel, finely tuned songwriting skills, and a slew of incredible performers. Never one to lean on well worn forms and contrived chops showcases, Stone draws inspiration from every corner. He also taps a well-spring of legends to bring his songs to life, including Papa Mali, Alvin “Youngblood” Hart, Marilyn Barbarin, Leo Nocentelli, Reggie Scanlan, the late Alfred “Uganda” Roberts, Meschiya Lake, James Singleton, Mike Dillon, and George Porter, Jr.

Good One relaunches with comedian Michelle Buteau, who you may know as host of the Netflix reality show "The Circle," or her roles in "Always Be My Maybe" and the "First Wives Club" reboot on BET+. Michelle’s about to bring her conversational, big-hearted stand-up to a worldwide audience with her first Netflix one-hour special. Host Jesse David Fox talks to Michelle about a joke featured in her 15-minute set from Netflix’s “The Comedy Lineup.” The joke was recorded in February 2018, three months after the reports of sexual misconduct came out about Harvey Weinstein, leading to the explosion of the #MeToo movement. Michelle’s joke is her processing all she was seeing and hearing and, in turn, boiling it down to one perfect phrase. Also included: mid-century modern furniture.  Watch “The Comedy Lineup” on Netflix and see Michelle record her Netflix special on March 1st at New York’s Sony Hall. Tickets on sale here. The goats brought in to clean up Riverside Park are taking a summer vacation! The original flock brought to the park in May was narrowed down from 24 to 18 after they cleaned out the weeds too quickly, and now the group will be meeting back up at their farm in Rhinebeck, NY while the weeds are allowed to regrow a bit on the steep slopes of Riverside Park that they were maintaining. As part of their going-away party, the Riverside Park Conservancy honored Massey the goat with an award for receiving the most votes in an online contest. The 166-pound, 10-year-old goat is the oldest of the bunch and received a bouquet of edible flowers as a prize. Watch for the goats to return later in the summer when they will be back for a second round of snacking on the invasive plants that will further weaken them and ensure they don't have the energy left to regrow again. In July, one day before the anniversary of Eric Garner's death, the Department of Justice, now overseen by Trump-appointed Attorney General William Barr, announced that they will not pursue civil rights charges against officer Pantaleo, who was seen in video putting Garner in a chokehold. Immediately after, the NYPD was quick to point out that their own internal disciplinary case against Pantaleo was still underway, and on August 2nd, an NYPD judge ruled that the officer should be fired due to his use of a chokehold when attempting to arrest Eric Garner, a tactic that is prohibited by NYPD policy and was listed by the city medical examiner as a contributing factor in Garner's death. Although the ruling is preliminary, Pantaleo was suspended effective immediately, after being kept employed in administrative duty during the five years since Eric Garner's death. The announcement came days after de Blasio was heckled by protesters demanding he fire Pantaleo during the second Democratic Presidential primary debates in Detroit. In response, he continued to claim that justice would be served in the next 30 days. Fellow Democratic candidate Kirsten Gillibrand had a more decisive answer. nn De Blasio has been polling between 0% and 1% among likely voters. nn The NYPD judge's decision will now make its way to NYPD Commissioner O'Neill, who will decide whether to fire Pantaleo in the upcoming weeks. City Council Speaker Corey Johnson released a statement saying: This decision is long overdue. It should not have taken five years to determine what the public clearly understood in five minutes: Officer Pantaleo used an illegal chokehold on Eric Garner, which ultimately led to his death. nn Now Police Commissioner O'Neill must act. Pantaleo must be fired immediately. Nothing will bring back Mr. Garner, but I hope this decision gives the Garner family some peace 15 years ago on August 3, 2004 — The pedestal of the Statue of Liberty reopens for the first time since the September 11th attacks You may not think of the city as harboring invasive insects, but arborists from the national Department of Agriculture have been inspecting trees in Brooklyn and Queens for Asian longhorn beetles. The beetles are thought to have originally traveled to the United States in 1996 in wooden shipping pallets, and now they threaten trees across the city. Inspectors search for the telltale signs of round holes in the wood of a tree, where the adult beetles emerge in late July. nn Keep an eye out for the signs of beetle infestation on your local trees: They create deep round holes big enough for a pencil to fit in and leave a collection of sawdust below the holes. The beetles themselves are about one and a half inches long, mostly black with white specks, and have distinctive blue stripes on their legs and long striped antennae. If you find a tree or piece of wood that may be infested, call the Asian longhorned beetle tip line at 1-866-702-9938 or email foresthealth@dec.ny.gov. 9 years ago on August 9, 2010 — Upon landing at JFK, a JetBlue flight attendant announces that he is quitting his job and exits the jet via the emergency evacuation slide, taking two beers with him 42 years ago on August 10, 1977 — David Berkowitz is taken into custody 3 years ago on August 10, 2016 — A man partially climbs Trump Tower And finally, thanks go out to Eric Boyo, an MTA subway operator for 27 years who stopped his train to help a woman on the tracks this week. As he approached Fulton Street on the G Train line, he noticed people on the platform waving their arms. Seeing that something must be wrong, he slowed his train early and then spotted a woman on the tracks. He stopped the train and opened the door at the front of the train to speak with the woman, and ended up helping her back onto the platform. Whether the woman intended to be struck by the train or had just fallen was unclear, but onlookers praised Eric for remaining calm and showing compassion during the rescue. According to the MTA, the recommended way to flag down an oncoming train during an emergency situation is to light your cellphone's flashlight and wave it side to side while facing the train.
