On May 2, 1870, a baby was born in Centerville, Louisiana, to formerly enslaved parents. Raised in poverty, segregated by a white supremacist society, he nonetheless went on to lead one of the most significant revival movements of the twentieth century. I'm talking about William J. Seymour, of course, and the Azusa Street Revival he led from 1906–1909. This revival was a critical node in the social network of early Pentecostalism. Today is the 154th anniversary of Seymour's birth; in honor of which, I've invited Dr. Larry Martin to talk about the significance of his life and ministry. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Martin is an ordained Assemblies of God minister, founder of River of Revival Ministries, and Pentecostal historian. His most recent book is William J. Seymour: Pentecostal Trailblazer and Revered Pastor of the Azusa Street Revival, published this year by Whitaker House. ————— This episode of the Influence podcast is brought to you by My Healthy Church, distributors of Cultivating a Spirit-Empowered Kids Ministry. Cultivating a Spirit-Empowered Kids Ministry will equip you with practical tools to intentionally make room for the Holy Spirit in your kids ministry. It includes practical tips for leading kids to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit, respond to the Holy Spirit, and receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit. There are a number of families that are synonymous with the game of lacrosse. The Thomas family is one of them. Join Steve and Ron Thomas as they tell stories of their lacrosse careers at the local to international levels as both amateurs and professionals.Steve ‘s playing career went from 1960 -1984. He played for Akwesasne/St. Regis through Bantam,Midget, Junior and Senior. During this time he helped to organize the St. Regis Lacrosse Program. He was offered a full scholarship to Syracuse University in 1967. Steve played on championship teams with the St. Regis Jr. Braves in 1969, 70 and 71 and was a Canadian Jr. B finalist in 1971.He was known as a “hardroc k” defenseman playing for Ross Powless in 1971 and 1972 on the Rochester Iroquois in the Can-Am Pro League. In 1974 he was drafted by Montreal in the National Lacrosse League.Steve continued to play on many Championship teams in the Quebec Sr. League for the Akwesasne Warriors. He was presented with the John Ferguson Best Defenseman Trophy 3 times. After his playing days were over he continued to contribute to the game as a coach, certified referee,Indigenous Director for the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of fame and Co-founder of the Akwesasne LacrosseHall of Fame in 1998.Ron Thomas lists renowned ancestors as those who helped mold his game. His father was Angus Thomas and grandfather was Thomas P. Thomas – both Hall of Famers.Ron played for the St. Regis Indians Lacrosse Club and the Valleyfield Braves in the 60's.He excelled at defense and played with Frank Benedict, Abe Thomas, and Larry Martin. He was employed as an ironworker and spent a great deal oftime and energy driving from jobs in the USA to make games on the weekends. There are currently 17 Thomas family members in the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Darwin's original tenants of his theory as laid out in his 1859 seminal work, "The Origin of Species," were these: that all organisms evolved from a common ancestor via minor, undirected changes, and that natural selection determines which of those random mutations get passed down to future progeny. Variations that confer a survival advantage allow the creature who inherits it to live long enough to procreate, and pass down that change to the next generation. Darwin successfully demonstrated "microevolution" with his Galapagos finch study, showing that finches confined to a particular island would evolve differently shaped beaks over time, in accordance with their available food sources. Similar processes have been demonstrated within many other species as well, and few would dispute that such microevolution does, in fact, occur. But Darwin then extrapolated this process, assuming that over the eons, such tiny changes could allow one species to evolve into another. Leaving aside the philosophical objections we've already covered in previous episodes, such as irreducible complexity and information theory negating the possibility of this occurring, is there any evidence that it nevertheless did occur? If it did, the fossil record should be riddled with examples of transitional species--some of which might have been "dead ends," but many of which should have been ancestors halfway between one species and another. Darwin himself wrote in "The Origin of Species," "Why then is not every geological formation and every stratum full of such intermediate links? Geology assuredly does not reveal any such finely graduated organic chain; and this, perhaps, is the most obvious and gravest objection which can be urged against my theory. The explanation lies, as I believe, in the extreme imperfection of the geological record." In other words, he figured that in time, and with acceptance of his theory and with scientists all over the globe searching for such evidence, the "missing links" would eventually be found. So, 164 years later, with belief in evolution dominating almost the entire scientific community, have any fossils of missing links been found? A quick YouTube search on evolutionary fossils presents the first arthropod, mollusk, insect, etc as "missing links." They're the "first" because of where they were found in the rock strata (where deeper is older). But all of the creatures presented are part of recognizable classes of creatures alive today, though those exact species are often extinct. This means they're the end of a line; they're not an intermediate on the way to anything we can identify. (Some of the species aren't extinct at all though, and the exact same organism is still alive today. This is what evolutionists call "stasis": no change over millions of years.) The only possible true missing link of which I'm aware is one found in the 1860s, during Darwin's own lifetime, called archaeopteryx. It was a fossil showing characteristics of both a bird and a reptile, and it is the basis of the widely supposed belief that dinosaurs are the ancestors of birds. Larry Martin, paleontologist from the University of Kansas, said in 1985 that archaeopteryx is not a true transitional species, but merely an extinct type of bird. According to wikipedia, twelve such fossils of archaeopteryx have been found, and all around the same area of Germany, encased in limestone. Since only 12 fossils of this same species were found in a very localized area, Martin's explanation makes the most sense. We should have found many more intermediates all over the world, in various stages of transition, if the hypothesis that dinosaurs were the ancestors of birds was correct. (We also wouldn't have expected the two to coexist either, if one were the ancestor of the other, but apparently according to both the Smithsonian and National Geographic, they did.) A few other possible contenders for "missing links" have been found over the years, but the case for each of them has been weak at best. One was the Java Man, found in 1891, supposed to be a missing link between humans and apes. All that was found of it was a skull, a femur, and three teeth. These were later determined to have belonged to three different species. Another was the Piltdown Ape, found in England in the early 1900s, also speculated to be a missing link between apes and humans. In Nov 1953, however, Time Magazine published collected evidence of multiple paleontologists that this ape too was comprised of fossils from three different species. The BBC later called it "the biggest hoax in British history." Peking Man was found in China in the 1920s, another supposed common link between apes and humans. All that was found of it were fragments of skull and teeth. Yet another was "Lucy," found in East Africa in 1974, another supposed common ancestor between apes and humans. Because of the structure of her knees, hands, and feet, which were not at all similar to humans, Dr Charles Oxnard wrote in his book, “Fossils, Teeth, and Sex: New Perspectives on Human Evolution” that Lucy was an extinct species of ape. It would be a decided understatement to say that the fossil evidence for evolution is underwhelming. One possible counter-argument for this is that it is exceedingly rare for an organism to become fossilized in the first place. This is because of the putrefaction of microorganisms, which consume dead organic matter. The Smithsonian Magazine writes that fossilization can occur via a few mechanisms: petrification (of bone, or wood), or from an organism being rapidly consumed by sediment that later turns to rock, tar, or amber, protecting the organic dead material from putrefying organisms. While most living things therefore do not become fossils after death, one would think, if Darwin's theory were true, that there should still be many more intermediates than there are recognizable species today. There's an even bigger problem than the lack of transitionary fossils. The rock strata defies the narrative of painstakingly slow evolutionary changes over a period of millions of years. Instead, even in Darwin's own time, he became aware of, and was troubled by, the contradictory evidence of the Cambrian Explosion, also dubbed the "Biological Big Bang." The deepest strata of rock, beneath the Cambrian, demonstrates only fossils of single celled or simple multicellular organisms. Then, suddenly, the layers of rock believed to correspond to the Cambrian period 13-25 million years ago showed nearly every phyla of animals alive today, fully formed. This is true worldwide of the strata belonging to this period. The Biological Big Bang raises several additional questions. First, what happened in the Cambrian period that allowed so many creatures to become fossilized all at once, when fossils are generally rare? In many cases the fossils found are even of soft-bodied creatures (The Qingjiang biota—A Burgess Shale-type fossil Lagerstätte from the early Cambrian of South China), which should putrefy quickly after death--preservation of these in such exquisite detail would certainly require very rapid burial. Also, land animals appear alongside marine animals in the Cambrian period all across the globe. What could have caused such intermingling of creatures that do not otherwise cohabitate? (A global flood mentioned in Genesis 6 comes to mind.) Darwin wrote in the sixth edition of "Origin of Species": "To the question why we do not find rich fossiliferous deposits belonging to these assumed earliest periods prior to the Cambrian system, I can give no satisfactory answer." Evolutionary paleontologist Stephen J Gould later said, "The extreme rarity of transitional forms in the fossil record persists as the trade secret of paleontology. The evolutionary trees that adorn our textbooks have data only at the tips and nodes of their branches; the rest is inference, however reasonable, not the evidence of fossils." He went on to propose the theory of Punctuated Equilibrium, in which one species makes a large jump rather than the series of tiny changes predicted in classical evolution to explain the deficit of the fossil record, though this mechanism is philosophically even more fraught than tiny progressive changes would have been. Retired physician, Larry Martin, has written 22 books in a variety of genres. When asked why so many and how, he says he loves to write, and he loves to learn. He learns best by writing, from books and articles about his medical field of pulmonology (disorders of the respiratory system), to history, music, and more! Listen as he talks about his books and his current project: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and its effect on memory loss. Larry Martin's bio: I began writing early in my medical career in Cleveland, starting with a book pulmonary medicine (my specialty) for the lay public. Over the years I wrote several more medical-themed books, some for physicians and others for the general public. I did not tackle fiction until 2011, with a novel about Civil War Savannah. Since then I have self-published several other fictional works, plus two books for children. My short novel “The Boy Who Dreamed Mount Everest” won 2nd place in the 2016 Florida Writers Association’s Royal Palm Awards, category of Middle Grade Fiction. “Liberty Street: A Novel of Late Civil War Savannah” won 2nd place in the 2018 RPLA competition, for Published Historical Fiction. Several short stories have also won RPLA awards. After retiring and moving to the Villages in 2015, I joined several writing clubs, and in 2017 served as president of the Writers League of The Villages (WLOV). I am currently WLOV’s Newsletter Editor and Website Manager. In addition, I regularly attend a writing critique group, called Wannabes, here in The Villages. Writing is my main retirement interest, but I have another: music. I never played an instrument and decided retirement is the time to learn, starting with the ukulele. One thing led to another, and I ended up with a 140-page “Uke Syllabus: An Introduction to Basic Music Theory for the Ukulele,” which I posted free online. My wife and I are blessed with three wonderful daughters, two in Chicago, one in New York, and 5 grandchildren. In this episode, we head to Guelph Ontario to sit with a friend and mentor Larry Martin. We met Larry a few years ago as he coached us through an intense agriculture business management course. Always the tough critic, especially when he sees untapped potential, he guided us through some significant breakthroughs in our business and helped give us some much-needed direction. Today, we go a bit deeper into Larry’s past involvement with farmers, policymakers, and businesses and helps us to understand why some farmers push to further develop, and others seem content with the status quo. We discovered that curiosity is the driver of personal development and improvement. And now we are left wondering, how do we influence others to become more curious?

I love helping people meet their real estate goals. Today, Bob sits down to share his experience of working with me to buy a new home and sell his current one.Selling your Grand Rapids home? Get a free home value reportBuying a Grand Rapids home? Search all homes for sale Today, I have a great success story from one of my clients, Bob. Here’s what he had to say: “My wife and I chose to work with Larry Martin from Keller Williams, and it was an easy choice. I prefer to do business with somebody I can trust, and Larry was someone I could trust.“I believe that when you trust somebody, you trust three things: their confidence, their character, and their compassion. “Larry obviously knows his stuff. His expertise was there, and his success speaks for itself. As for character, I knew he would work very hard, tell me the truth, play by the rules, and be ethical—I wouldn’t have to worry about any of that. Larry really cares about his customers. “And Larry really cares about his customers. You’re more than just a number; you’re a person. We talked about the sell side of things and I appreciated that. We actually started with Larry several years ago. We said, ‘At this point, we would like to sell. What should we fix, what should we repair, and what should we let go. We don’t want to sell a perfect house, but we want to sell a sellable house.’ “He talked us out of some projects, which I loved, but it was excellent. Throughout the process, communication was clear. His partner, Dana, was very helpful, and Brent, who did the inspection, was very, very thorough and personable. “I think we got the best. I bought through Larry and we’ll sell through Larry, and I recommend that you do, too.” Thanks to Bob for sitting down and sharing his experience with us. If you or anyone you know is thinking of buying or selling a home, just give me a call or send me an email. I would be happy to help you!
Canada's economy and energy independence relies heavily on the fossil fuels we extract within our own national borders. However, our global environmental reputation has allegedly taken a hit over the past few decades as CO2 emissions per capita have the singular focus for environmentalists. As a result, we have been labeled everything from “corrupt petro state” to “colossal fossil” for our perceived inaction on climate change. Now, the governments of Canada and Alberta have opted for carbon taxation in order to fight climate change embarrassment. They believe that Canada should lead by example, forcing Canadian industries and consumers to adopt a “green future” without a clear plan for what that entails, let alone how it will affect the environment or our economy. Former provincial and federal official Larry Martin will examine how ideology may have buried science in the current policy, where we went wrong, and who stands to win and lose from this arguably misguided approach. Speaker: F. Larry Martin F. Larry Martin is a retired civil servant. He ultimately served as Deputy Minister to the Premier of Saskatchewan and Assistant Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Intergovernmental Affairs in Manitoba. His career commenced in the federal Department of Industry, Trade, and Commerce some forty years ago. Larry grew up farming near St Brieux, SK. He holds a Bachelor of History and a Master of Agricultural Economics, both from the University of Saskatchewan. He is retired and lives in Canmore, AB. Larry is now contemplating Canada's approach to carbon dioxide emissions and climate change. His column, “Canada may already be carbon neutral, so why are we keeping it a secret?” was published in the Financial Post last year and addresses the absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide by Canada's terrestrial biomes. His January article in The Huffington Post, “Carbon Tax Won't Make Canada a Climate Leader If Nobody Follows” considers Canada's influence on climate policy in India, China and other developing countries. Both articles rank high in measurements of reading and sharing on social media. Not too many years age having an astrologer on a call-in reading show would have been silly, given that it would have taken far too long to cast the chart for each caller before the reading could even start. Computers changed that, and with a real pro like Larry, it gets even better! He can input your info into his computer nearly as fast as you can say it, and with his incredible skill at reading charts, you get the REAL information you're looking for. Fast. But, of course, fast is not as important as accuracy, and Larry is one of the best there, too. For example, one of the things he can do is give you your "perfect" area to live, based on your chart. When I sent him my info he predicted my "Perfect Place." And the line he drew passed within 50 miles of my dream home. That's pretty close, given it could have been anywhere in the world. Larry is a predictive astrologer, meaning he has the skill to pull a huge amount of information from your chart, and he can relate that to what's going on in your life and what you can expect. Larry Martin, "Super Astrologer" Call-In!
