iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon Matthew McGlynn is the founder and owner of Roswell Pro Audio in Sebastopol, CA. A self-described microphone nerd, Matt’s first audio project was RecordingHacks.com, which attempted to describe every microphone ever made. It gave him an excuse to buy a *lot* of microphones — absolutely necessary for the research, so far as he told his very tolerant wife. Having way too many microphones gave him the opportunity to take them apart to find ways to make them sound better. He started MicParts.com to sell microphone upgrade parts and kits, bringing joy and sonic self-actualization to DIY aficionados around the world. But because not every recording enthusiast also enjoys solder fumes, Matt founded Roswell Pro Audio, a microphone company whose products come already put together. Roswell Pro Audio borrows from the research and development work done by MicParts, but takes its products in a different direction. Roswell’s designs distill the various capsule and circuit combinations into best-in-class offerings that have won acclaim from musicians, home studio owners, and Grammy award-winning producers and engineers. iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon Erik Samuelson is the owner of Three Crown Studio, LLC in Brooklyn, New York. Three Crown Studio is a full service music production studio that specializes in helping artists create and record their music and develop their careers. Erik grew up in the Midwest in a musically-inclined family. His mother was a singer in Stockholm, his father a Saxophone player and mechanical engineer, and one of his sisters is now a music teacher. From a young age, Erik was interested in music, jazz, engineering, and mechanics. Like his father, he also took up the saxophone and played in a variety of Jazz, Rock, Reggae, and Jam bands throughout his high school and college years. After winning the Cleveland High School Rock-Off, his band had the opportunity to record an album at Metro Sync Studios in Cleveland. As this was the first time he had stepped into a recording studio, it was an incredibly defining moment that offered perspective into an alternate way of making music, and he found it fascinating. In 2006 he attended Ohio University for Music Production. He had the honor to study under Eddie Ashworth, a reputable west coast audio engineer that worked on albums for bands like Sublime and Pennywise. During his time at college, he ran a studio out of his home and began recording local and touring bands. After graduating in 2010 with a BA in Media Arts & Sciences, he married his high-school sweetheart, and moved to New York City. He started working at Guitar Center just to pay the rent, but it evolved into a temporary career as he quickly worked his way up the ranks from sales clerk to General Manager of the Brooklyn GC store, one of the largest in the country. Over time he had the opportunity to meet and work with thousands of musicians, engineers, and industry professionals, creating a unique network of like-minded people. In 2017, he left GC to pursue his passion, and founded Three Crown Studio out of his Brooklyn apartment. However, he quickly began to develop a foundation of clientele, and in early 2019 was able to open a brick & mortar studio in Downtown Brooklyn. At age twenty-four, he began a storied career as an A&R executive at Elektra Records that started with signing Metallica in the summer of 1984, changing the entire landscape of rock 'n' roll and heavy metal. He also worked in A&R for both Palm Pictures and Geffen Records and was thrilled to executive-produce albums by Cyndi Lauper, Public Image Ltd, White Zombie, and Nina Simone. Alago grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a large, spirited, and devoted Puerto Rican family. Through his early passion for music, art, theater, and photography, he soon found himself rubbing elbows with many downtown NYC scene makers, from Stiv Bators to Jean Michel Basquiat, Cherry Vanilla and Wayne County to Deborah Harry and Robert Mapplethorpe. As an underage teenager going to Max's Kansas City, CBGB, and various art galleries, Alago also began running The Dead Boys fan club. A few years later, he became the assistant music director for legendary nightclubs the Ritz and the Red Parrot. In the late 1980s, he was diagnosed with HIV, which manifested into full-blown AIDS ten years later. He survived to continue his music career, but in 2005, he left music to pursue his other love: photography. Alago went on to publish three bestselling books: Rough Gods, Brutal Truth, and Beautiful Imperfections with German-based publisher Bruno Gmünder. He has since overcome his longtime addiction to drugs and alcohol. In his clean and sober life, he has reconnected with his family, continues to be a working photographer as well as record producer, and only through the grace of his 12-Step program is he able to live this big, beautiful life. In 2017, a documentary directed by Drew Stone and produced by Michael Alex on Alago's wildly successful career in music was released in theaters and on Netflix, entitled Who the Fuck Is That Guy? iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon Austin Schroeder is a Monitor Engineer based out of San Diego, California, who is currently in rehearsals for the highly anticipated Rage Against the Machine tour. An Iowa native, Austin started on piano at a young age, setting the groundwork for a deep and lifelong understanding and appreciation of music. His teenage years saw him develop more into a bassist, which he played in several jazz bands before ultimately ending up at Full Sail University, hoping for a degree in music recording. After moving to Nashville to work at the famed Blackbird studios, Austin tired of studio life and decided that perhaps he was better suited to life on the road and the more spontaneous feel of live music. A misunderstanding during his interview process at Clair Bros led to an opportunity at a smaller Pennsylania-based company, Allusions Lighting and Sound Production. It was here, that Austin’s fate was set, and his career began to flourish. Among the artists that he has worked with are Iggy Azaelia, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Tom Morello, and Lupe Fiasco. In 2019, Austin was awarded the Parnelli award for Monitor Mixer of the year. Today’s episode is sponsored by ShowproBeardCo, & Boulevard Carroll. iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon Tana Douglas is widely acknowledged as rock’n’roll’s first female roadie. Her journey started in 1973 in Australia, where within a year she was working for AC/DC, first doing backline then F.O.H. Sound for the band. She then moved to lighting working for a Major Australian Promoter and completed in quick succession several tours with International acts such as: Santana, Suzi Quatro, Neil Diamond, David Essex and Leo Sayer and Status Quo all before she turned 18. After getting her Father to sign her passport so she could travel Internationally she ventured to London to start 3 years with Status Quo running their lighting rig. She then brought that rig to TASCO a major Production company in London that until that time had only supplied Sound for tours. A relationship developed there that would last several years and include working for such artists as: Status Quo, The WHO, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, The Police, Elton John, Iggy Pop and Johnny Halliday the French mega star. Her relationship continued with TASCO enabling her to transfer to the United States after they opened a Los Angeles division. After becoming a U.S. resident she broadened her working relationships to also include both Delicate Productions and Light & Sound Designs. The tours that followed were Elton John, INXS, and Men at Work, before being once again called back to Paris to manage the largest lighting rig ever built for a 7 month residency for her old friend Johnny Halliday, for Light & Sound Design (LSD). After successfully completing that task it was time for a change. Los Angeles had offered Tana new passions and she gradually left lighting and stage/production to focus her skills on logistics for everyone including Lenny Kravitz, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Luther Vandross, Ice-T and Ice Cube to name a few. As the music industry grew to become a worldwide cultural phenomenon, Tana was there, in the thick of it, a girl. Tana and her unique position in the music industry have been included in several other people’s books – most recently a chapter in Stuart Coupe’s book, Roadies, which confirmed her as the first female roadie. But now it’s time for Tana to tell her story, in her own words. Her Memoir, LOUD, is being published through HarperCollins Australia and tells of the joys and struggles faced as a girl out on the road on her own in the wild and wooley days that created this industry of music. It is due to be released in April 2020. Tana currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Today’s episode is sponsored by Soundgirls.org & ShowPro Beard Co. Jimmy Pettinato is a veteran Production Manager based in his hometown of Scranton, PA. In spite of his long resume marked by some of the biggest names in the music business, Jimmy has never strayed far from his family’s hard-working, no-nonsense, Italian-American roots. Born into a legacy of carpenters, day laborers, and mechanics, Jimmy’s career choices seemed predetermined. However, once he discovered he had a knack for lighting design, it was only a matter of time before a life on the road would change his fortunes for good. After several years as both Lighting Designer and Production Manager, Jimmy ultimately made the switch to focus solely on being the best Production Manger he could, and through his career he has worked with the likes of Trans Siberian Orchestra, No Doubt, Spin Doctors, PINK, New Kids On the Block, Backstreet Boys, Goo Goo Dolls, and many, many more. Sharing the ride with Jimmy is his wife, FOH Engineer Michelle Pettinato. Today’s episode is sponsored by Boulevardcarroll.com, showprobeardco.com, and Stagehandsclothing.com. iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon Jessica Sanders is a Lighting Designer/Tech currently based in Nashville, TN. Raised by music-loving parents in Macon, GA, and named after and Allman Brother’s song, Jessica and her family eventually settled in Houston where she ultimately got her start in the audio field. A graduate of Media Technical Institute, Jessica started working as a stagehand upon graduating. With no fear of rigging or climbing structures, Jessica always seemed to find herself with the lighting department even though she was always wanting to go hang with the audio crew. Before long, she worked her way up from being a lighting technician doing AV and one-offs for a few key companies in Florida and building a reputation there. After an opportunity to start doing more and more large one-offs, and smaller festivals, the work started coming as a touring technician. Jessica spent most of 2019 with pop sensation BTS. Ever passionate about her career, she is creating an online resource for others looking to get some ongoing education or those just starting out. The Transmission: For the third year in a row, we joined Jay & Jack on their “LOST Podcasting” panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. Over 100 people filled the Santa Rosa Room at the Marriott to talk about the end of “LOST,” and its possible future.
