Send us a Text Message. On this Episode Tom and Bert discuss 2 more Classic Movies of the 1980's, "Back to the Future" and "Trading Places". We cover the behind the scenes happenings and how the decisions impacted the films as they were being cast and produced."BTTF" (1:10) a 1985 Film starring Christopher Lloyd, Michael J. Fox and Lea Thompson was a Fantasy/Comedy/Drama that burst onto the scene and captivated audiences, young and old, with the concept of reliving your past by travelling "back" to the future and attempting to change the course of events in one's lives."Trading Places" (26:20) a 1983 Film starring Eddie Murphy, Dan Akroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis was a Comedy/Drama that was Eddie's breakout movie. Known for his Stand Up Comedy routines, his Cable TV Specials and his starring role on the improv TV Show NBC's "Saturday Night Live" (SNL) he was taking his career in another direction. Along with his fellow SNL Alum, Dan Akroyd, they and other castmates acted out the story as old as time, Poor man taken off the streets and put into the Hoi Polloi's High Society and countering that with taking the Spoiled Rich Kid from his Regal Throne to the streets to see what the outcome would be on their lives and if a change of fortune would enhance their lives and make them feel more appreciative. These are 2 of the Best Movies of the 1980's so sit back and take it all in. Listener: this is both an apology AND a warning. An apology for being naive enough to think that someone might like to share a harmless anecdote about directing footballing icon Pele to a toilet with the nation... and a warning to anyone who thinks that using a joke name is an easy and amusing way of throwing Elis James off his stride. You just thank your lucky stars that radio hardman John Robins wasn't in the studio to deal with you, and instead the gentle giant Ivo Graham was playing the role of co-host. It's a good job he and Elis are fleet-footed broadcasters, because it would take more than a practical joke to make them flounder (perhaps something like asking them to do an Irish accent on the fly would do the trick). Now that's out the way, today's show was a thoroughly enjoyable affair! Ivo used his huge brain to solve some listener problems in 'Ask Ivo', we heard some more listener renditions of the DI Robbyns theme tune, and dare we say we heard the most dramatic ending to a Made Up Game of all time. You won't want to miss it.

Our opening banter is still us continuing to enjoy the "Idiots to lovers" trope in Romance, referencing a book (or two) that have hit that sweet spot recently. Our first question of the episode is more of an update from a listener!! (We love those!) Our second question is from Stephen Hanrahan asking the cards if starting an OnlyFans (or something similar) is a good direction to go towards since Instagram isn't the best platform for artists. We're back with our first deck review of our Fall series talking about a Hoi Polloi clone called Moon Baby Tarot! Yes, we know it's a short episode. About two decades ago I offered Aakar Patel a job as editor of Explocity. And just when we were all set, the famous and reputable newspaper in Mumbai, Mid-Day, offered Aakar a job as Editor and…well, of course I understood. If he had not accepted that job I would have forced him to. But you know what they say… when one editorial door closes and another…oh the hell with the analogies… I heard that Tushita Patel, Aakar's partner, was leaving her job as Editor of The Asian Age. I called her and she hopped a flight to Bangalore and joined Explocity as Editor and totally killed. Twenty years later, I am fortunate to count them both as friends. And not principally because they make fried fish with that mustard thang. Now, anyone with even a peripheral interest in Indian politics ought to know Aakar Patel. And even though newspapers around the country have recently developed new and deeper shades of funk by not continuing to publish Aakar's anti-injustice polemic, he remains India's most prolific columnist. The context of Aakar's prose is serious, the tone often calling question to judgment, but you can sense a suppressed smile under every description. Here's an example of what I call the suppressed smile. In a socio-political comment about the inability or at least, unwillingness of the Indian to be gracious in defeat, he uses cricket. In an article titled The Banality Of The Indian Cricket Fan he wrote and I quote, “It's about nationalism, which in India is narrow and zero-sum. If they score even a little victory, a boundary, our tumescence droops.”That writing is not magic realism—whatever manner of contrivance the phrase magic realism is—but maybe I'll call this one… Cialis In Wonderland...?The reason humour lurks beneath even the most serious of Aakar's writing is because he sees the foibles of the hoi polloi as absurd theatre. In a recent event promoting the launch of his latest book, The Price Of The Modi Years, someone in the audience asked him if saw hope in the political scenario in India, when viewed from the depressed side of the divide.“Yes,” he replied, “but maybe it will take a couple of election cycles.”“Thank you, Aakar!” The audience member cried irrationally, “thank you for saying there's hope!!!”I smiled and tried to catch Aakar's eye but I could tell that he was busy trying to figure out how not to become a prophet—although in India pundit and prophet somehow become synonymous. Today Aakar is my guest as neither prophet nor rationalist, but as a writer and I got to ask him a bunch of questions about what makes him, above all, one of the country's most compelling writers.ABOUT AAKAR PATELAakar Patel is a syndicated columnist who has edited English and Gujarati newspapers. His books include 'Why I Write', a translation of Saadat Hasan Manto's Urdu non-fiction (Tranquebar, 2014), 'Our Hindu Rashtra: What It Is. How We Got Here', a study of majoritarianism in India and Pakistan (Westland, 2020), 'Price of the Modi Years', a history of India after 2014 (Westland, 2021) and 'The Anarchist Cookbook', a guide on why and how to protest (HarperCollins, 2022). Leeds' furious and funky post-punk innovators The Gang of Four make an indelible, unforgettable visit to London, Ontario's Wonderland Gardens, four months after the chaotic Iggy Pop gig at the same venue. Euphoria ensues. I had been listening to the band incessantly during that 1980-83 corridor and was thrilled they were coming. This March 1983 concert was not only my first ticketed gig of a musically busy year, it also marks the start of a new and welcome chapter in my life as well. This podcast recalls the concert but also reflects on key changes in my social life at this time as I began my 20s and finally found my local co-conspirators. Special Guest Phil Robinson, who I met at this time, returns to share his memories of the gig and the party after. Phil and I also reminisce about first meeting each other and our favourite live music haunts (Fryfogle's, The Vic, The Embassy), dance clubs (Notes on Monday Nights, Studio 812), and drinking dens (Singapore's, The Brunswick, The Richmond) that we and our friends frequented circa 1983-4 in London, Ontario. Phil's cat Oliver also makes an angry and verbal guest appearance. Tune in for intensity and celebration, a lipstick covered forehead, and finding your own tribe. That and standing next to Catherine O'Hara and Kate McGarrigle in bars. You can read the original blog entry at the mylifeinconcert.com blog. Next on Stage: The next concert crystalizes a moment in time, representing a changing of the guards in the alternative music world, when The Beat—or The English Beat as they were called on this side of the pond—come to Alumni Hall in London, Ontario with a new, unknown American band called R.E.M. in tow as the opening act. The show took place as The Beat were in the last throes of their career but also peaking in popularity in North America. Meanwhile, R.E.M. released their classic debut LP, “Murmur,” during that same week. Retrospectively, it marks the sundown of one era and the sunrise of the next. Returning Special Guest Phil Robinson has a lot of great memories from the night which he shares. Tune in next time for stage invasions, a cultural shift, and wondering what the hell I was thinking. Summary In this minisode, Haddy and Yassi discuss their experience doing Quill Camp's provocation from Episode 7. Provocation (#artifpodcast): This is a durational sound piece that you create for yourself. Part 1 - Creating the piece: Go on a 15 minute walk in your neighborhood. When you get home, immediately use the voice recorder app on your phone to record yourself speaking for 30 seconds. Respond to this prompt: What was the most important thing you saw on this particular walk? Attempt to describe it with attention to visual detail. For twenty-nine more days, do the same thing. Make sure your walk happens at the same time each day. Use the “resume” feature in the voice recorder app to continue to add to the same sound file.* At the end of the thirtieth day, you should have a 15-minute sound file. Part 2 - Performing the piece: Go on a walk at a different time of day than your walks in Part 1. Listen to your soundtrack. Synthesize what you hear with what you see. --- Feel free to adapt this prompt to your own circumstances. If going for a walk in your neighborhood is impossible or creates anxiety, consider another activity (or even household chore) that you can perform wearing headphones. Mike Jeffers and special guests Wayne Powers and Brett Dean from the Shout Section Big Band. About Wayne Powers Wayne started out as a “boy singer” in New York nightclubs at age 16. “I wasn’t very good,” he freely admits, “but you’ve gotta start someplace – and I grew up with this music inside me – in my heart and soul – and treasure it enough to gladly do whatever it takes for me to live inside the music. You see, when I was growing up we couldn’t afford a piano (and we had no room for one, anyway). so I just learned to play the human voice.” Persistence paid off as Powers eventually studied in New York with renowned vocal coach of the day, Fred Steele, mentor to Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Eddie Fisher and widely credited with helping restore Tony Bennett’s voice. Wayne continued to hone his craft, performing in stage musicals, reviews and in nightclubs after relocating to the Midwest – and eventually, the West Coast. After arriving in L.A., Wayne landed a job with Henry Mancini and, soon after, fulfilled another dream by establishing his network TV career. But Powers was still pulled to return to his roots, augmenting his comedy and acting work by putting together his “Hoi Polloi,” band with a uniquely joyous sound that dazzled audiences in some of the top west coast nightclubs, showrooms and jazz festivals. The sound was reminiscent of Louis Prima, “Fats” Waller, Louis Armstrong and others who were among Wayne’s major musical influences in creating this unique band. They released one CD, “Plain Old Me.”

While I was in Los Angeles for the NAMM show, I had the privilege of sitting down with FOH Engineer Lucie Barinkova to chat with her about her career and hear about her incredible childhood, growing up in Czechoslovakia, and her families’ eventual escape to an Austrian refugee camp in 1989. Lucie’s baptism into the world of live sound came at age 17, when her boyfriend left alone her to mix the Punk band Hoi Polloi. Three painful feedback-filled hours later she was hooked, and vowed to redeem herself, which she has successfully done, touring with artists such as RZA from Wutang, Odesza, Spoon, Banks & Steelz, Tom Tom Club, The B52’s, and Thundercat. We would like to thank the following sponsors for making our 85th episode possible: Telefunken – Elektroakustic, Airtun.com, Gig-Gear, Soundgirls.org, and Load-in International Magazine.

In 1857 Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville was granted a patent for an invention he called the “Phonautograph.” The contraption was the first to capture sounds, but it did not have a mechanism to play them back. These sounds were locked away until 2008 when researchers found a way to recreate them through modern technology. Brooklyn Around the time that those sounds were being revived, the decision was made to intentionally make the recording of a song as rare and unique as recordings once were. Alec Duffy, from Hoi Polloi and Jack, won the rights to a previously unheard Sufjan Stevens song in a Christmas contest. Rather than release the song on a wide scale, Alec devised a plan to make every time the song is heard a truly unique experience. Learn about the phonautograph and why Alec usually keeps his song locked away in his Brooklyn home. Phonautograph recordings for the episode are from FirstSounds.com.
