In recent weeks, I've been thinking about a few standout episodes from the early days of the podcast. They are full of great information and I thought it would be a good idea to share them again for listeners who may have missed them the first time around.A groundbreaking, authoritative exploration—rich with powerful personal stories and convincing research—of the many ways the living can and do accompany the dying on their journey into the afterlife. In 2000, end-of-life therapist William Peters was volunteering at the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco when he had an extraordinary experience as he was reading aloud to a patient: he suddenly felt himself floating in midair, completely out of his body. The patient, who was also aloft, looked at him and smiled. The next moment, Peters felt himself * to his body…but the patient never regained consciousness and died.Perplexed and stunned by what had happened, Peters began searching for other people who'd shared similar experiences. He would spend the next twenty years gathering and meticulously categorizing their stories to identify key patterns and features of what is now known as the “shared crossing” experience. The similarities, which cut across continents and cultures and include awe-inspiring visual and sensory effects, and powerful emotional after-effects, were impossible to ignore.BioWilliam J Peters is the founder of the Shared Crossing Project and director of its Research Initiative. Recognized as a global leader in the field of shared death studies, he has spent decades studying end-of-life experiences. A practicing grief and bereavement therapist, he holds degrees from Harvard's Graduate School of Education and UC Berkeley.https://www.amzn.com/dp/B0984PD615/https://www.sharedcrossing.com/ https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife

Academics have launched a new research initiative. Sixteen universities from across the UK have formed the Agricultural Universities Council. It aims to look at the big picture to see what kind of research will most benefit farmers. What do the labels on pork tell you about the way the pig was reared? It can be complicated - for example, ‘outdoor bred pigs' may sound as if they live outdoors but they actually spend most of their lives inside. The sows give birth outside and their piglets stay with them until they're weaned, but after that they head indoors. We visit a farm in Wiltshire which produces outdoor-reared RSPCA-assured pork and find out what that means. The Island of Ulva is looking for a farmer. It's just off Mull, on the West Coast of Scotland. The community group which owns it says it will involve looking after a herd of Highland cattle and tending more than 3000 acres. Shared Death Experiences. This week I am talking to William Peters about his book, 'AT HEAVEN'S DOOR: What Shared Journeys to the Afterlife Teach About Dying Well and Living Better'.William J Peters is a practicing grief and bereavement therapist, he holds degrees from Harvard's Graduate School of Education and UC Berkeley. He is the founder of the Shared Crossing Project and director of its Research Initiative. He is recognized as a global leader in the field of shared death studies, he has spent decades studying end-of-life experiences. A groundbreaking, authoritative exploration—rich with powerful personal stories and convincing research—of the many ways the living can and do accompany the dying on their journey into the afterlife. The next moment, Peters felt himself return to his body…but the patient never regained consciousness and died.Perplexed and stunned by what had happened, Peters began searching for other people who'd shared similar experiences. He would spend the next twenty years gathering and meticulously categorizing their stories to identify key patterns and features of what is now known as the “shared crossing” experience. The similarities, which cut across continents and cultures and include awe-inspiring visual and sensory effects, and powerful emotional after-effects, were impossible to ignore.Long whispered about in the hospice and medical communities, these extraordinary moments of final passage are openly discussed and explained in At Heaven's Door. The book is filled with powerful tales of spouses on departing this earth after decades together and bereaved parents who share their children's entry into the afterlife. Applying rigorous research, Peters digs into the effect these shared crossing experiences impart—liberation at the sight of a loved one finding joy, a sense of reconciliation if the relationship was fraught—and explores questions like: What can explain these shared death experiences? How can we increase our likelihood of having one? What do these experiences tell us about what lies beyond? And, most importantly, how can they help take away the sting of death and better prepare us for our own final moments? How can we have both a better life and a better death?https://www.amazon.com/At-Heavens-Door-Journeys-Afterlife-ebook/dp/B0984PD615/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1642760847&sr=8-1https://www.sharedcrossing.comhttps://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcasthttp://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://teespring.com/en-GB/stores/the-past-lives-podcast

For nine years, Vanessa Slavich took a traditional, reactive, “whack-a-mole” approach to manage her battle against a rare and aggressive tumor, working with highly specialized doctors operating in various treatment silos. Frustrated with the outcomes, this year, Slavich is taking a new more proactive and strategic approach. She's using her career in technology startups as a model for turbo-charging her research and treatment options in a unique way — which she describes in a recent post in Substack, called “The Startup Body: managing my health #Likea Boss.” And Slavich is “designing her health” in collaboration with Peter Kane, Founder and Executive Director at Research to the People, a non-profit biomedical research initiative based in San Francisco. Research to the People helps patients co-lead and direct new research and treatment options for their conditions. The group is creating a bold new model for patient-centric treatment and giving voice to patients who are grappling with rare and complex diseases. Vanessa and Pete, welcome to Techtopia. Vanessa Slavich: Thank you for having us. Pete Kane: Thank you. Chitra Ragavan: Vanessa, tell us when and how you first found out about your tumor and what kind of tumor it is. Vanessa Slavich: I found out about it in 2011. I had just started working at Square. It was a early startup back then, and I was actually at my friend's graduation, and the chair was hitting my back in a very particular way. And I remember shifting back and forth and being like, "Man, this chair sucks." And then my friend looked at my back, and she's like, "Oh, you have a little bump." Vanessa Slavich: And I ended up getting a biopsy, and they found out it was what's called a desmoid tumor. It's also called aggressive fibromatosis, and it's a rare tumor. You're more likely to get struck by lightning than have this tumor. There's about 900 cases per year in the United States. And it basically is part of my connective tissue so it's everywhere in my body, but it's considered locally aggressive in that it likely won't show up in my foot or my brain. It'll probably always be somewhere near my back. But in the last 10 years, we haven't found a really effective treatment option. Chitra Ragavan: What was that like to know that you had a tumor that was rarer than being struck by lightning. That must've been quite a shock.
