The Question WHY Frustrating when kids ask But a REALLY GOOD QUESTION WHY do you do what you do? WHY Are you here? WHY do you exist? What is your WHY? We all have one Abundant Life is a PURPOSEFUL LIFE John 10:10 10 A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance. Last week… What is abundant life? Abundant life is a life full of the spiritual gifts of God's Holy Spirit given to His faithful followers   Current Statistics: 2023 Harvard Graduate School of Education More than half of young adults (58%) reported that they lacked “meaning or purpose” in their lives in the previous month and half of young adults reported that their mental health was negatively influenced by “not knowing what to do with my life.” There are many other factors that may contribute to feelings of meaninglessness and purposelessness as well as to anxiety and depression, including: The increasing focus on the self in our culture; Difficulties making choices given new, rapidly changing, and sometimes undefined career paths; Young adults marrying at older ages Declines in religious participation High social media use and other forms of digital media use A media ecosystem that floods us with frightening messages Higher expectations than their predecessors for finding meaning and purpose “Religious communities can provide you with a meta story, can give you a sense of meaning, a place across geographic boundaries and time,” Weissbourd said. “So I'm not again saying we should become more religious, but we should think about how we create some of these aspects of religion in secular life.”   2 Rules for having a PURPOSEFUL ABUNDANT LIFE Rule 1: Your purpose cannot start with you “What's my WHY?” is the wrong question for the Christian Scripture teaches that… True purpose is found in God Alone God Created ALL THINGS on purpose for a purpose 2 Types of Purpose General Purpose: The chief end of man is to Glorify God with your life   1 Corinthians 10:31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. This is the FOUNDATION of your WHY You exist to GLORY GOD with your WHOLE LIFE You cannot bypass this to get to your “Specific purpose” Specific Purpose/Calling: Empowered by specific gifts of the Holy Spirit Lived out through the FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Can be: Something right now Something Later in life Tips to knowing your specific calling: Grow where you are planted Luke 16:10 Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much. Healthy things grow Whether you are a… Parent Student Spouse Employee Leader Teacher Your calling will often follow your gifts/passions But the Lord can “ADD TO” the meet what He has purposed you for   Your Purpose is for you but not ABOUT YOU Bigger than you Will take FAITH/OBEDIENCE   Rule 2: God's Purpose for your life Is a PROCESS, Not a PLACE   God's purpose for your life is not linear Romans 8:20 We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Process = Sanctification Sanctification: The process of being made into the image of Christ in your life   Joseph in Potiphar's house Summarize up to this point Joseph's dreams   Genesis 39 1 Now Joseph had been taken to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain of the guards, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there. 2 The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made everything he did successful, 4 Joseph found favor with his master and became his personal attendant. Potiphar also put him in charge of his household and placed all that he owned under his authority. 5 From the time that he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. The Lord's blessing was on all that he owned, in his house and in his fields. 6 He left all that he owned under Joseph's authority; he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.   Rule #1 in action: Your purpose cannot start with you If your purpose starts with you, you can never live higher than your circumstances Joseph – Doing all things to the GLORY OF GOD God blessed him But he wasn't fulfilling his “SPECIFIC CALLING” The dreams Being faithful in his difficulty paved the way for future purpose New Troubles are on the way… Now Joseph was well-built and handsome. 7 After some time his master's wife looked longingly at Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.”   8 But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master's wife, “with me here my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has put all that he owns under my authority. 9 No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do this immense evil, and how could I sin against God?”   10 Although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her. 11 Now one day he went into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were there. 12 She grabbed him by his garment and said, “Sleep with me!” But leaving his garment in her hand, he escaped and ran outside. She kept his garment and lied to her husband 19 When his master heard the story his wife told him—“These are the things your slave did to me”—he was furious 20 and had him thrown into prison, where the king's prisoners were confined. So Joseph was there in prison. Rule #2: God's Purpose for your life Is a PROCESS, Not a PLACE When you are living in God's purpose, the enemy will ALWAYS send you a “POTIPHAR'S WIFE“   2 things: Distraction Easier way If your WHY is found in the right thing, you can say NO to the wrong things When our purpose is grounded in God, it allows us to let God shoulder the burden When we choose OUR OWN purpose, we become responsible Rule 1: Your purpose cannot start with you Rule 2: God's Purpose for your life Is a PROCESS, Not a PLACE

Pastor Andy Cass Place is less about physical space and more about God's presence, drawing parallels to the Israelites in Exodus 33. He encourages Echo Church members to embrace the new building as a space where God continues to meet with them, while emphasizing that true transformation comes from being in God's presence, wherever He leads. TEXT: Exodus 33:1-15, Numbers 1-10, Psalm 27:4, John 14:2-3, Acts 16:25-30 NOTES: God's Presence Over All: You can have all the things, but without God's presence, even the best place or building is just brick and mortar. The Problem with Place: -When we make the place the main point. -When we get too comfortable. -When we lock the doors to change or remain stuck. Promise of Place: God's promise is that His presence will go with us, and we will find rest, echoing Moses' plea for God's presence in Exodus 33. "Church is a place to practice God's presence, learn His voice, and accept His love." BIG IDEA: "Place is less about a physical space and more about who is present with you." "All the Milk and Honey in the world and no presence of God, is like soggy Honey Bunches of Oats. Might as well eat oatmeal." God's Provision: "What we all need is the presence of God and whatever He provides, wherever He leads." The Problem with Comfort: "Discomfort is a blessing before the blessing." Church's Role: "If the Holy Spirit isn't present, then this place isn't much different than your gym, school, work, or favorite coffee spot." Invitation: "There's a place for you—the true you, not the fake you." Prayer: "Jesus, I surrender, I have more questions than answers, and I choose to follow You anyway." Years ago, as a student at a Baptist college, I heard a sermon that seemed so right – but was absolutely wrong!  The speaker said something like this:  "If you have sin in your life, God won't be able to use you; He will just use someone else and wait for you to get your life straightened out."  I, and all the other ministerial students at that service said loudly, "Amen!"  The message was a 'hit the sinners hard-with-the-gospel' approach that appealed to our youthful enthusiasm and affirmed our convictions regarding sin, and Christians who aren't 'serious' about Jesus.  We all went back to our dorm rooms' pumped up' about the message, and some of us even planned to use that approach, and maybe even that quote,' the very next time we preached.              Over the next few days, though, I had time to think about the message, and I realized something: If God won't use someone with sin in their life, who will he use?  Also, if God cannot use someone who hasn't gotten their life straightened out, when will I know I'm good enough for God to use?  These were daunting questions, so I asked my preacher friends what they thought.  Some didn't worry about it because it sounded good, but some of my more thoughtful friends agreed with me – something was wrong with what the speaker had said!             There is a story in the Old Testament book of Ruth about a woman of the same name who was really in a bad spot in life in the land of Moab.  Her husband had died, and she was alone with her mother-in-law, Naomi, who had come from another country in the city of Bethlehem, with no real prospects for a good life.  She decided she would go back to Judah with her mother-in-law and adopt the elder woman's faith in God.  When they arrived in the land, she had no job or money, so she began to follow the laborers in the field after harvest, picking up the scraps for her and her in-law.  Over time, a man noticed her in the field and arranged to meet with her.  Things progressed quickly; they eventually married, and she had a son named Obed.  This isn't really an unusual story, except that her son Obed grew up and married a woman and had a son named Jesse, who had a son David, who grew to become the King of Israel!  The ultimate end to the story, given in Matthew 1, was that, centuries later, in King David's family, a child whose name was Jesus was born!  Yes, the Messiah, the Son of God, was born because God worked with a woman whose life was in a mess.  She was no one special, new to the Jewish faith, and had nothing to give to God – except her willingness to follow God's lead.  God used  Naomi's influence and family connections to lead her to depend upon God, and God worked his plan to include a Moabite woman, Ruth, to be included in Jesus' genealogy in the first chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. This was more than just an acknowledgment of history; her inclusion in Jesus' family ancestry was God's way of saying to the world that He could use anyone, from any place, in his plan for all mankind – even a woman born and raised Gentile! This story is a powerful reminder that God's plan is inclusive, and He can use anyone, from any background, in his mission for all mankind.             God wants everyone to know that to him, there is only one people on earth – all are part of his creation, and all are called to follow Jesus.  God loves all people and can use anyone, no matter their story, in his plan to save the world from sin.  God is calling you to faith in Jesus and to live a life of obedience to his plan.  God will use you, help you find your place in this life, and bless you into eternity when you follow Him!   Your support is not just important; it's crucial in spreading the message of our Ministry. When you read this column, it will be only a few days before Flag Day. I have often wondered if "Old Glory" can tell her story, just what she might tell us. Recently, I read some warm thoughts which I'd like to share with you, my dear readers of this column. "Some people call me 'Old Glory.' Others refer to me as the 'Star Spangled Banner' or the 'Stars and Stripes,' but whatever they call me, I am your flag. I remember some time ago, people lined up on both sides of the street to watch a parade. And naturally, I was leading every parade - proudly waving in the breeze. What happened? I'm still the same old flag. But now I don't feel as proud as I used to be. When I come down your street, you just stand there with your hands in your pockets. Then I see the children running around and shouting. Is it a sin to be patriotic anymore? Have people forgotten what I stand for? And where I've been?" Our flag was first raised on June 14th, 1777. And oh, it is more than a piece of cloth having a design of stars and stripes. It symbolizes the greatest nation on Earth. It has been the refuge of millions of oppressed people from everywhere. It has stood for freedom from want and fear. The red stripes symbolize hardiness and courage - the hardiness of the early pioneers, the courage of the common working man. The white stripe signify purity and innocence - the purity of the idealists who believe that each person is a child of God, and the innocence that strives for his right to be here. The blue field is indicative of vigilance, perseverance, and justice - the vigilance to protect man's freedoms and perseverance that rejects all defeat and justice, the goal of free men everywhere. The star is unified on the field of blue embrace the 50 states as one, unified for the good of mankind and country. Honor her, respect her, defend her. Never let her enemies from within or without, tear her down in shameful defeat. Lest she never rise again. Place God first and others second, that our nation will remain the bulwark of peace, freedom, and equal opportunity for all mankind. This is your flag. Let your heart salute her. Warm and Winsome Thoughts: Dear friends, let us protect and respect our flag, a symbol that is so important, significant and meaningful to those of us who love and honor and revere our country. We are still at the beginning of this new year, and as we go forth in this year, I believe it's important that we shape our thoughts, as well as our actions so that this won't be another year of defeat but more so another year that we dominate. How many of you have felt defeated the past few years, months, seasons, or even this year? How many of you feel like your life is just passing you by and you're having a hard time finding your purpose and a sense of meaning? How many of you feel like you don't have much control over what's happening in your life? How many of you are still waiting on God to come and tell you what to do, or come and make you do it? Warm Thoughts

When you read this column, it will only be a few days before Flag Day. I have often wondered if Old Glory could tell her story, just what she might tell us. Recently, I read some warm thoughts which I'd like to share with you, my dear readers of this column. Some people call me "Old Glory." Others referred to me as the "Star Spangled Banner," or the "Stars and Stripes," but whatever they call me, I am your flag. I remember some time ago, people lined up on both sides of the street to watch a parade. And naturally, I was leading every parade, proudly waving in the breeze. What happened? I'm still the same old flag, but now I don't feel as proud as I used to be. When I come down your street, you just stand there with your hands in your pockets. Then I see the children running around and shouting. Is it a sin to be patriotic anymore? Have people forgotten what I stand for and where I've been? Our flag was first raised on June 14th, 1777. The white stripes signify purity and innocence - the purity of the idealists who believe that each person is a child of God, and the innocence that strives for his right to be here. The blue field is indicative of vigilance, perseverance and justice - the vigilance to protect man's freedoms and perseverance that rejects all defeat and justice, the goal of free men everywhere. The stars unified on the field of blue embrace the 50 states as one, unified for the good of mankind and country. Honor her. Respect her. Defend her. Never let her enemies from within or without tear her down in the shameful defeat, lest she never rise again. Place God first, and others second. Then our nation will remain the bulwark of peace, freedom, and equal opportunity for all mankind. This is your flag. Let your heart salute her. Warm and winsome thoughts: Dear friends, let us protect and respect our flag. A symbol that is so important, significant, and meaningful to those of us who love and honor and revere our country. Jerusalem Day is coming up when Israelis celebrate the reunification of Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty in 1967. King David chose Jerusalem to be His capital city for political reasons some 3,000 years ago. Why did God then choose Jerusalem to house the temple? It was not due to size or location. In fact, it is a perfect example of how God often takes what is weak, small, and insignificant to do something remarkable. On those days you do not feel up to the task, just remember Jerusalem, the small city on a hill, that became God's dwelling place.
