Marc Hustvedt shares insights from helping to scale Mr. Beast to 350 million YouTube subscribers and building a global creator brand, revealing the unique combination of traits that separates extraordinary creators from everyone else. Check out Contrarian Thinking and Codie Sanchez to learn more about Marc's current work helping people buy and grow small businesses.• Creator-led businesses eliminate the power imbalance found in traditional media• The most successful YouTube integrations feel natural and appeal to the global audience• Small, targeted audiences of 10,000 engaged followers can build lucrative businesses• The future of media belongs to individual creators who own their businesses• Work ethic and obsessive dedication to the craft set apart successful creators• Jimmy Donaldson (Mr. Beast) studied YouTube content for years before finding success• High appetite for risk and willingness to bet on yourself is critical• Single-minded focus on "making the best YouTube videos in the world" drove their strategy• The $3.5 million Squid Game recreation video was an inflection point for the brand• Traditional production methods create unnecessary friction for creatorsEver wonder what makes certain creators explode while others struggle to gain traction? Marc Hustvedt, former president of Mr. Beast, pulls back the curtain on how they built one of the most successful creator brands in history expanding into ventures like Feastables Chocolate and Mr. Beast Burger. What truly sets apart the 0.1% of creators from everyone else? Marc reveals it's a unique combination of traits: relentless work ethic, obsessive attention to detail, willingness to take massive risks, and laser-sharp focus on a singular mission. Jimmy Donaldson didn't just appear out of nowhere – he spent years making videos that barely got views, studying YouTube's ecosystem, and constantly iterating. The breakthrough came from understanding that success requires both quantity and quality, paired with the courage to bet everything on yourself repeatedly. The $3.5 million Squid Game recreation video serves as a perfect case study of their approach. While traditional media might have stretched production over months of planning and bureaucracy, the Mr. Beast team compressed timelines dramatically. They secured one of the largest brand deals ever for a single YouTube video by creating a sense of FOMO around cultural moments. Most importantly, they eliminated the traditional production hierarchy: "We were both the studio and the network," Marc explains, allowing for nimble decision-making that put creative vision first.Marc is now bringing his digital expertise to Contrarian Thinking as their president, where he's exploring the intersection of education and creator economy. His observation? "You don't need a hundred million people to watch a video. If you've got the right 10,000 people, you can have a very lucrative business." This shift toward highly engaged, targeted communities represents the next evolution in digital content creation. Listen now for insights on building digital businesses, recognizing talent, and creating content that captivates audiences in today's fragmented landscape.Marc Hustvedt: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marchustvedt/Marc was the President of Mr. Beast from 2021 to 2024. Welcome to this classic episode. Classics are my favorite episodes from the past 10 years, published once a month. These are N of 1 conversations with N of 1 people. There aren't many people like Cyan Banister. Her life story is remarkable. She was homeless at a young age, dropped out of high school, and five years ago she suffered an extremely rare stroke. Yet, in spite of everything, she is one of the most optimistic and curious people you can hope to meet. Cyan is also one of the great angel investors of this era, having invested early in SpaceX, Uber, Postmates, and Deepmind to name a few winners. She became the first female investing partner at Peter Thiel's Founders Fund and now invests at Long Journey Ventures. Our conversation is as much about investing as it is about the essence of life and how connecting with that will help us in our professional pursuits. It is also full of awesome stories about people and companies like SpaceX and Bill Murray. Please enjoy this great conversation with Cyan Banister. What if the secret to extraordinary wealth isn't about betting on the next big thing, but buying something tried-and-true—like a plumbing business, a car wash, or a cleaning company? What if the future of entrepreneurship isn't on Wall Street or in Silicon Valley, but on Main Street—if only we knew how to seize it?My guest today is Codie Sanchez, founder and CEO of Contrarian Thinking, a digital education platform and media company with over 6 million followersIn her new book, Main Street Millionaire: How to Make Extraordinary Wealth Buying Ordinary Businesses, Codie lays out her bold argument: that buying profitable, established, cash-flowing businesses is the most underrated path to building wealth—and that now is the time to act. Why? Because America is facing a generational handoff. Over 40 million Americans are hitting retirement age, and baby boomers—who currently own nearly two-thirds of small businesses with employees—are poised to sell. Codie calls it a “silver tsunami,” and for those who know how to navigate it, it could mean once-in-a-generation opportunity. In our conversation, Codie opens up about her own unlikely journey from journalism to Wall Street to Main Street. We talk about how she made the leap, the psychological hurdles to entrepreneurship, and how she thinks about power, relationships, and the future of work in an AI-driven world.

Codie Sanchez started out on the traditional corporate path, working long hours and steadily rising through the ranks. But she soon noticed a pattern: the wealthiest people weren't just starting flashy tech companies—they were buying "boring businesses." Go to www.LearningLeader.com for full show notes The Learning Leader Show with Ryan Hawk Codie Sanchez is an entrepreneur and investor known for founding Contrarian Thinking, a media and business education company. She has a diverse background, including entrepreneurship, finance, and journalism. Through her book "Main Street Millionaire," she advocates for wealth-building by acquiring small businesses and shares her insights on financial independence and business success. Codie emphasizes practical, contrarian approaches to wealth and leadership. Notes: Her dad always said to her: ‘You're not going to be a princess, you're going to be the president' – It's a great reminder of the power we have as leaders to believe in someone and raise their level of expectations because you see something special in them. Codie was glowing while talking about her dad. How Codie earned a job at Vanguard. She went to conferences. She met people. She got IN THE ROOM and took action. And then when she got her opportunity, she led with her curiosity, asked questions from the woman she met with, learned, read the books she told her to read, and followed up. Showing up, doing extra, and following up are a great way to earn a job that you might not be qualified for. How you start and end your meetings. What type of energy do you bring to the space? Remember, you no longer get to be energy-neutral as a leader. You're either lifting the room up or taking it away. We want to add energy additives to the rooms we enter. One of Codie's favorite books – Letters to a Young Contrarian by Cristopher Hitchins. “What I like about Christopher Hitchens, he pushed back against the common narrative in a time where to be an activist was really frowned upon” “He was what the people these days that say they're activists actually are. He really had no loyalty to any type of thought; he was simply trying to find the truth. He was the inspiration for contrarian thinking” Career Path – “I don't believe that humans have linear paths ever. Anyone who has had an interesting career in my opinion has had a completely divergent set of experiences. High Performers: They hate small talk. Are not okay with wasting your time. Do what they say they're going to do. Do it with urgency. Are obsessed, not just interested. Goal Setting: “If you want to be a person who hits your goals: Skip setting goals and set sacrifices. What are you willing to give up to get what you want? That is the missing piece to winning. Every one of your goals has a price." Codie's Anti-Goals: Being an employee/work for others, Selling other people's products, Speaking for free, Coffee meetings. The richest self-made woman in the US is… Diane Hendricks (co-founded the largest wholesale roofing, siding, and window distribution company). There are billions in the boring. Writing = Clarifying Your Thinking Writing helps Codie think clearly and organize her thoughts. The process of writing demands coherence and structure, unlike verbal communication. 4 Parts to buy a business - Cover debt, Cash to have an operator, Money to make a salary, Operating cash. 3, 9, 12 method - Learn the 10 steps in the first 3 months. Get in on a deal. Stabilize. Boring Businesses - Laundromats, car washes, and port-a-potty services can be very profitable. They are less glamorous but have a higher success rate compared to sexier industries. Advice - Meet with a small business owner. Ask to shadow them. Get curious. 42% of the population works for or in a small business.

Codie Sanchez is a formidable force in the world of finance, known for her bold, contrarian thinking, financial acumen and entrepreneurial prowess. Codie comes by blue collar ownership and education the old fashioned way, her parents. Her mom a 30 year special education teacher and her dad a self made blue collar builder many times over inspired her to keep building. Determined to figure out what leads to real freedom, Codie graduated early from Arizona State University with a degree in journalism. She spent time in Juarez, Mexico, where she worked to bring attention to the murder, mutilation and human trafficking of thousands of women. Codie's coverage of the atrocities in Juarez earned her the Robert F. Kennedy award for print journalism. But after witnessing firsthand the ways in which financial stability could be a lifeline, Codie realized she didn't want to write stories, she wanted to change them. She saw that people hold the power—and the purse strings—but they have to be able to bet on themselves in order to succeed. Codie shifted gears from journalism to finance, dedicating herself to learning how to earn more money so she could help others do the same. In 2008, Codie took her first job in finance at Vanguard. That same year, the 2008 financial crisis struck and Codie again witnessed the devastating impact of financial illiteracy on ordinary people. Over the next several years, she redoubled her efforts to master the financial industry, ascending the ranks of prominent institutions such as Goldman Sachs, State Street, and First Trust. Over the next decade, Codie's entrepreneurial drive led her to buy, build and invest in an array of businesses, like laundromats and cannabis companies. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Codie kept betting on herself and eventually created an investment portfolio as diverse as her skills. Now fluent in the language of finance, dealmaking, mergers and acquisitions, Codie began working on a way to pull her experiences together. The goal was, as it had always been, to reach, educate and empower other people. When a global pandemic brought the world to a standstill in 2020, Codie realized it was time to take action. She launched Contrarian Thinking, the world's first free-thinking finance and media company. In spite of the global pandemic it launched in, Contrarian Thinking has empowered thousands to take control of their financial destinies and become successful small business owners. This venture fosters a community of more than four million contrarian thinkers worldwide, teaching the tenets of financial freedom and supporting small business ownership.

There's a huge problem with most business advice… It's something you won't hear a lot of success gurus talk about. But most business advice nowadays seems to be all the same. Going down YouTube rabbit business rabbit holes may expose you to different personalities, but you'd be hard pressed to find a novel idea among them. Now this isn't necessarily a bad thing. You often hear cliches because there's truth to them. However, the problem here is that not everyone in business has the same goals or wants the same outcome. So there definitely should be some diversity of thought. Which is why I brought Codie Sanchez on today's podcast episode. Codie has an amazing newsletter called “Contrarian Thinking”. And on it she does exactly what the name suggests – teaches you how to think differently from the masses. One way she does this is by exposing just how profitable it is to start what she calls a “boring business”. Codie owns multiple businesses such as car washes, laundromats, ice dispensers, etc. And by doing this, she's created a nice living for herself. So if you want to learn how you can leverage boring businesses to create wealth for you and your family, make sure to give this episode a watch. In this episode you'll learn: Why Codie believes a boring business can free you from the rat race. Easy ways for you to make a boring business profitable. Her exact process for finding these businesses and turning them around quickly. And much, much more. Enjoy!
On this episode of The Jeff Fenster Show,, Jeff Fenster interviews Codie Sanchez, an entrepreneur and content creator. They discuss the importance of supporting each other in personal ventures, the concept of 'skin in the game' and how it relates to entrepreneurship, the advantages of starting a boring business over a flashy one, and the process of deal making and how it differs from real estate. Codie encourages listeners to get out of their comfort zone and to take advantage of opportunities to learn and grow.
Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 561 What motivates you to work on your dreams? In this episode, Codie Sanchez, founder + CEO of Contrarian Thinking, joins Josh Trent to explain why money is freedom, why you need to think for yourself, how creating a villain in your life can push you forward, what it takes to be a contrarian, what steps you can take to achieve financial freedom, and what makes successful people different from others. "If you look at the amount of people that capitalism has pulled out of poverty, as measured by countries that have actually instituted it as opposed to taken it away, the numbers don't lie. There are huge issues with it but it is the only one that we can categorically say continues to lift people out of poverty. I think what we actually need to do, we need to export more people into ownership." - Codie Sanchez Live Life Well from Sunrise to Sunset Save 20% with code "WELLNESSFORCE" on everyone's favorite Superfoods brand, ORGANIFI, including their Sunrise to Sunset Bundle and their Women's Power Stack that includes HARMONY + GLOW for true hormonal balance and great health radiating through your beautiful skin. They don't have things to lose so that becomes the tragedy of the commons which is when everybody's responsible for somebody and nobody takes care of it." - Codie Sanchez Put On an Armor "In order for us to succeed through life, we need to put on armor. And the armor in my case is often the exact opposite of what people think it is. It's a reminder of all the things that I've been able to overcome over the years. When difficult things happen to you, if you can alter them, you can really move forward in a way that nothing really hurts anymore." - Codie Sanchez Contrarian Thinking "If you were to go out to a group of 100 people and ask them: "Do you think that you think well?" The answer of most people would be "Of course, yes." And that's why we're crazy on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram because we don't actually question our ability to frame our own individual thoughts which is a huge mistake. The smartest, richest, happiest people I know question everything, including themselves. They question most themselves." - Codie Sanchez Links From Today's Show Codie Sanchez 555 Mike Dillard | Richer Every Day: How To WIN The War on Your Money + Mind Letters to a Young Contrarian by Christopher Hitchens David Osborn Leela Quantum Infinity Bloc - 10% off with code "JOSH10" Mimetic theory Anthony Pompliano: Millionaire Explains How To Get Rich During A Recession | Codie Sanchez BREATHE | Breath & Wellness: 21 Day Guided Program Who Not How: The Formula to Achieve Bigger Goals Through Accelerating Teamwork by Dan Sullivan + Benjamin Hardy Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Great Thinkers by The School of Life Josh's Trusted Products | Up To 40% Off Shop All Products BREATHE - 20% off with the code “PODCAST20” Organifi –20% off with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' SEED Synbiotic - 30% off with the code "JOSHTRENT" BON CHARGE - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" MANNA Vitality - 20% off with the code "JOSH20" Mendi.io - 20% off with the code "JOSH20" SpectraSculpt - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" SaunaSpace - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" Cured Nutrition CBD - 20% off with the code "WELLNESS FORCE" PLUNGE - $150 off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" LiftMode - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" HVMN Ketone-IQ - 20% off with the code "JOSH" MitoZen – 10% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” Paleovalley – 15% off with the link only NOOTOPIA - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" Activation Products - 20% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” SENSATE - $25 off with the code "JOSH25" ION - 15% off with the code ‘JOSH1KS' Feel Free from Botanic Tonics - $40 off with the code "WELLNESS40" Essential Oil Wizardry - 10% off with the code "WELLNESSFORCE" ALIVE WATERS - 33% off your first order with the code "JOSH33" DRY FARM WINES - Get an extra bottle of Pure Natural Wine with your order for just 1¢ Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, with any purchase Free Resources M21 Wellness Guide - Free 3-Week Breathwork Program with Josh Trent Join Wellness + Wisdom Community About Codie Sanchez Codie Sanchez is the founder and CEO of Contrarian Thinking, a critical thinking and financial media company with over 3 million subscribers and 100 million views a month.
