Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is actor Donna Rees, who's cheering from the terraces at any mention of Cupid And Psyche '85 by Scritti Politti, Ripping Yarns: Golden Gordon, The Rise And Rise Of Michael Rimmer, Kevin Turvey: The Man Behind The Green Door and Gonks Go Beat. Along the way we'll be celebrating the chart-topping pop career of the window cleaners from Pigeon Street, explaining how to impress Michael Palin by mentioning the basic concept of 'trains', listening to Charlie off Casualty's scary trad-folk album and trying to scientifically determine what actually constitutes a 'gonk'...You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/. You can also find Donna on Looks Unfamiliar talking about King Of The Castle, The Monty Python Matching Tie And Handkerchief, The Innes Book of Records and Melody here. If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, you can help to support the show by buying us a coffee here. Hurrah!  It's a brand new O3L, where we discuss our Top 5 EPs & Mini-Albums with singer/songwriter Paul Handyside.  We love the EP, or Extended Play, perched somewhere in between a traditional single and a full length album.  Sometimes they compile album tracks or previous singles, and other times they are conceived as complete works designed to stand up on their own.  Either way, they're short, they're fun, and leave you wanting more.  Other than beings short, sounds a lot like this podcast, eh?  ("Yes."  The correct answer is "Yes.")  Oh, and spoiler alert: We have the rare "triple crossover" in this episode.  Can you guess what it is? So join us for a rousing chorus of "Shubby Shubby Go!", won't you?   About Paul Handyside: Paul Handyside is a folk and roots singer/songwriter. His song writing style has been compared to artists as varied as Chris Difford, Billy Bragg, Robyn Hitchcock, Green Gartside, Elvis Costello, Jeff Buckley and Martin Carthy. He began his musical career with eighties indie darlings Hurrah! The jangle pop band had a run of classic singles (including Paul's "The Sun Shines Here", "Hip Hip", and "Sweet Sanity") and album releases on Kitchenware and Arista Records from 1982 to 1991, and toured extensively worldwide. During the nineties he toured and recorded with friend and Kitchenware labelmate Martin Stephenson. Handyside formed Bronze in 2001. Still embracing chiming, Rickenbacker driven pop, and increasingly alt country, they released two albums, The Statue in the Stone and A Common Prayer. His debut solo album Future's Dream, a combination of pop, country and modern day hymns was released in 2007 to great reviews. The second album Wayward Son followed in 2013 and further developed his own brand of folk-tinged americana. Tide, Timber & Grain was released in 2016 with elements of traditional British folk and sixties protest songs emerging in Handyside's now well established and diverse musical palette. The fourth album Loveless Town was released 21st of May 2021. As is evident in the title track he songs have an even stronger resonance with country and americana, the counterpoint to which is “Hartley Pit Catastrophe”, a true story from his native North East with its English folk sensibilities. Handyside is aided and abetted by long time cohorts Dave Porthouse on double bass and melodeon and by Rob Tickell, who also produced the album, on guitar and dobro.

When British band Scritti Politti originally got together at Leeds Polytechnic in 1977, they were a punk-inspired collective of art students and squatters with a penchant towards Marxism. In the early 1980s leader Green Gartside scrapped all that and pivoted the band to a pop/soul sound that paid homage to American artists Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin among others. This week we're joined by Aylesbury, UK resident Paul Marfleet as we dig into their smash sophomore album 'Cupid & Psyche 85'   Songs featured in this episode: God Save The Queen - Sex Pistols; Some Like It Hot - Power Station; Notorious - Duran Duran; Heads Will Roll - Echo & The Bunnymen; Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart - Mark Almond; Capital (It Fails Us Now) - Gang Of Four; Rent - Pet Shop Boys; Bibbly-O-Tek, Skank Bloc Bologna - Scritti Politti; Confusion - New Order; Poison Arrow - ABC; The Sweetest Girl - Scritti Politti; Dedicated Follower Of Fashion - The Kinks; The Word Girl, Small Talk - Scritti Politti; Careless Whisper - George Michael; Absolute, A Little Knowledge - Scritti Politti; We Can Work It Out - Chaka Khan; Union Of The Snake - Duran Duran; Don't Work That Hard, Perfect Way - Scritti Politti; Perfect Way - Miles Davis; Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry For Loverboy) - Scritti Politti; Human Nature - Michael Jackson; Lover To Fall, Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin) - Scritti Politti; I Say A Little Prayer - Aretha Franklin; Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren; Right - David Bowie; Hypnotize - Scritti Politti; The Message - Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five; The Whisper Of Your Mind - The Lilac Time; Way To Blue - Lisa Hannigan, Teddy Thompson, Green Gartside (from the concert film 'The Songs of Nick Drake: Way To Blue)

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 2, 2021 is: abjure • ab-JOOR • verb 1 formal a : to renounce upon oath b : to reject solemnly 2 formal : to abstain from : avoid Examples: "Pop was indeed eating itself. 'If you've gone eight bars and there hasn't been an inanity,' argued [musician Green Gartside], 'it's time for a "baby" or an "ooh" or a "love" or something.' Perhaps the Pixies 1989 song 'La La Love You' takes this to its logical conclusion, abjuring all lyrics except repeated declarations of love, the 'maybes' and the 'babys.' It is music at its most self-referential." — Peter Salmon, The Quietus, 17 Oct. 2020 "Leo Tolstoy was an inveterate quitter. All his life, he gave up the things that mattered to him, or tried to. He bolted from university without a degree, left the army, renounced the privileges of aristocracy. He rejected the Orthodox church and abjured fiction as a vanity." — The Economist, 8 Feb. 2020 Did you know? Just as a jury swears to produce an unbiased verdict, and a witness swears to tell the truth on pain of perjury, those who abjure their former ways "swear them away." Abjure (as well as jury and perjury) comes from Latin jurare, which means "to swear" (and which in turn is based on the root jus, meaning "law"), plus the prefix ab-, meaning "away." These days, we can casually abjure (that is, abstain from) various vices, but in the 15th and 16th centuries to abjure was a matter of renouncing something under oath—and sometimes a matter of life and death. For example, during the Spanish Inquisition, individuals were given the choice between abjuring unacceptable beliefs and being burned at the stake.

It was the first step on a very successful musical journey that eventually saw him come to the attention of Rough Trade founder, Geoff Travis. Travis had already signed and nurtured an act fronted by Welshman Green Gartside, called Scritti Politti. Travis saw the potential in both men and they soon began a fruitful career as part of the second incarnation of the band. Two globally successful and critically-acclaimed albums followed, Cupid & Psyche '85 and 1988's Provision before the band dispersed, a move brought on by Gartside's overwhelming distaste for the industry.During that period, Gamson spent time producing, writing and arranging for the likes of Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, occasionally with Green at his side. However, after a painful, drawn out experience recording Provision, David decided to establish himself more as a producer and writer than a band member and his first post-Scritti effort was for Tony LeMans on Prince's Paisley Park Records label. His work as a staff producer at Warner Bros saw him working with Roger Troutman, Sheila E., George Benson and another stint with Chaka Khan. Gamson's work with Meshell Ndegeocello saw him nominated for multiple Grammys. After going independent, David found himself working with Green again on Provision's follow up, 1999's 'Anomie & Bonhomie', this time solely as producer. After this, he turned his hand to film and TV, working alongside Hans Zimmer on Mission Impossible 2.More recently, he has focused on songwriting and has worked with a number of high profile artists including Kesha, Adam Lambert, Jessie J and Quinn XCII. Most notably, he received a songwriting GRAMMY nomination for his work on ‘Stronger' by Kelly Clarkson, a track which sat atop the Billboard Hot #100 for three weeks as well as many other charts worldwide. His work with Charlie XCX, a leading figure in the new PC Music/Hyper Pop genre, came about in no small part due to the fact that Cupid & Psyche '85 is held in very high regard in those circles. He also co-wrote and produced two new tracks for Scritti's Absolute 'best of' compilation with his old friend, Green Gartside, delighting fans of the band worldwide.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_GamsonRob Puricelli BiogRob Puricelli is a Music Technologist and Instructional Designer who has a healthy obsession with classic synthesizers and their history. In conjunction with former Fairlight Studio Manager, Peter Wielk, he fixes and restores Fairlight CMI's so that they can enjoy prolonged and productive lives with new owners. He also writes reviews and articles for his website, failedmuso.com, and other music-related publications, as well as hosting a weekly livestream on YouTube for the Pro Synth Network and guesting on numerous music technology podcasts and shows. Outside of his regular day job, he works alongside a number of manufacturers, demonstrating their products and lecturing at various educational and vocational establishments about music technology.www.failedmuso.comTwitter: @failedmusoInstagram: @failedmusoFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/failedmuso/

Averse to nostalgia though he is, Geoff looks back on the musical odyssey that took him from suburban north London to San Francisco's City Lights bookstore — and then back to Notting Hill Gate, where the Rough Trade story started in 1976. Mark and Barney ask him about the label's many remarkable artists (from the Fall to the Smiths), the Cartel distribution network he set up, and the company's second coming with the early Noughties signings of the Strokes and the Libertines. A timely segue takes us into discussion of early Rough Trade postpunks Scritti Politti, whose frontman Green Gartside is heard in clips from a 2006 audio interview by Adam Sweeting. Geoff shares his memories of — and deep respect for — Green, answering questions about the singer's return to Rough Trade after Scritti's major-label successes of the '80s and '90s.After a passing nod to pieces by RBP's featured writer of the week Pat Blashill — author/photographer of the splendid new Texas is the Reason — Mark leads us gently through his highlights of the week's library additions. Most pleasingly, he welcomes the work of the late Lillian Roxon to RBP in the form of her 1967 report on the new creatures dubbed "Hippies". David Gamson has been messing around with sounds, songs, and arrangements for years. As keyboardist/writer/producer for the 80’s band Scritti Politti, he guided the brightly colored, synth-driven sound that was to create several hits in the UK and the U.S. For a band that started as a punk-based band, the migration to a soulful, yet groove-based sound was designed primarily by Gamson. Today, he works as an independent producer and songwriter working with artists such as Chaka Khan, Me’shell Ndegeocello, Green Gartside, Sheila E., George Benson, Miles Davis, Al Jarreau, and has garnered several Grammy nominations for his work. His musical heritage was a natural training ground for him….having worked in a recording studio out of college and even having a father who was Leonard Bernstein’s assistant. It was the making of a talented producer, writer, and arranger who has become the “scritti” behind many artists today. Inside MusiCast welcomes David Gamson.
