What happens when your career takes a turn you never planned for - and it ends up being exactly where you're supposed to be? In this episode of Creative Risk, Joshua sits down with Alan Bennett, a performer-turned-Broadway wardrobe supervisor, for a deeply candid and often hilarious conversation about longevity in the arts, reinvention, and the unexpected ways creative careers evolve.Alan opens up about his early passion for dance and performance, the realities of touring, and how a financial crisis (and a medical scare) rerouted him into a new chapter backstage. They explore everything from backstage politics and the overlooked artistry of wardrobe, to the invisible labor that keeps Broadway running. This isn't just a conversation about costumes - it's about ego, pride, adaptation, and finding fulfillment in unexpected places. A bus driver recalls the highs and lows of his life in this dark and blackly comic monologue. This is a bit of an experiment for me, inspired by the popular character monologues written by Alan Bennett that were broadcast on British television in the 1990s. If people like it, I may make it the start of an occasional series called "Talking Dead".“THE BUS DRIVER'S FEAR OF CHANGE” by Jasper L'Estrange. This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. You can hear me discuss this story by listening to an upcoming episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem, my bonus show for paying YouTube channel members and Patreon supporters.CREATOR'S NOTE: These recordings may contain sound effects and music because that's what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. If it's not your thing, please feel free to listen to the many other narrators who are voice-only. I'm sure they'll be glad to hear from you. The stories I choose to read I choose because I like them - not that they're all perfect or that I agree with all the sentiments expressed, but because I find something in them to recommend them. If I were to read only what I consider to be the few perfect vintage horror stories I should have recorded about twenty and stopped. But everything I read has something in it that appeals to my taste. Tastes differ, so you might not agree with my choices, but that doesn't make you right.

Samira Ahmed presents Front Row's contribution to Radio 4's New Year's Day celebration of the Shipping Forecast, marking a century since the BBC began broadcasting it. This edition of the arts programme explores how the Shipping Forecast inspires musicians, writers, artists of all kinds, and how it has become a powerful presence in the psyche of the nation, even among people with no connection to the sea. There is an irony here: the forecast is factual, devoid of metaphor, yet it moves millions emotionally. Recorded in front of an audience at Britain's most famous ship, the Cutty Sark, Samira's guests are novelist Meg Clothier, author of The Shipping Forecast: Celebrating 100 Years; musicians Lisa Knapp and Gerry Diver; poets Sean Street and Zaffar Kunial; and Paddy Rodgers, Director of Royal Museums, Greenwich. They discuss the inspirational quality of the Shipping Forecast - the litany of names of sea areas, its rhythms, the factual yet evocative vocabulary of atmospheric and sea states, and how this vital information, demanding attention, has become a national lullaby. Sean Street, Britain's first Professor of Radio and author of several books about sound, considers the Shipping Forecast as a sound work, and reads his poem, Shipping Forecast, Donegal. Lisa Knapp performs, accompanied by Gerry Diver, her song 'Shipping Song' and 'Three Score and Ten', written by William Delf, a Grimsby fisherman, after a disastrous storm in 1889. There are two world premieres, commissioned by Front Row, an audio piece by the sound designer, Ross Burns, and a poem by Zaffar Kunial. And some quirky Shipping Forecast moments such as Alan Bennett reading it and Charlotte Green assaying the Forecast - in Arabic.Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Julian May

Join Ocean House owner and author Deborah Goodrich Royce for a conversation with authors Moya Hession-Aiken and Elizabeth Birkelund, who will discuss their books Shoulder and A Northern Light in Provence. Refreshments will  About Moya Hession- Aiken: Moya Hession- Aiken studied art at Manchester Polytechnic (now Manchester University) and the Central School of Art and Design (now Central St. Martins), graduating with a first class honors degree in textile design before moving to New York to work in the garment industry. However, before too long she was working for MTV earning an Emmy Award for her work as a paintbox artist. At MTV she met her future husband, producer Bill Aiken. They had a son, Liam, in 1990, a few years before Bill's tragic death. She lives in Connecticut and pursues her work as a fine artist, exhibiting frequently. About Shoulder: Growing up a headstrong Irish Catholic girl in a notoriously tough housing estate in Northern England, Moya has just one goal-to live a rich creative life in America. Shoulder tells the story of the riotous and hilarious path from her boisterous but warm family back home to her education in London and her escape to New York in the 1980s where she finds everything she's looking for–exciting jobs in the fashion industry and later at MTV–but where she also meets the man of her dreams, only to lose him to cancer following the birth of their son. Told in a voice that is equal parts Alan Bennett and Frank McCourt, this is a story about the thrill of taking chances and the unbearable pain of loss, as well as a profound meditation on what it takes to survive and what it means to care for others. About Elizabeth Birkelund: Elizabeth graduated from the Hewitt School in New York City, from Brown University with honors in Comparative literature, and from the Radcliffe Publishing Program. After college, she worked for a literary agent and was a member of the editorial staff for a start-up magazine, European Travel and Life. She began her fifteen-year freelance writing career as a monthly personal finance columnist for Cosmopolitan magazine, and has written for over fifteen publications, including The Runaway Wife, Glamour, Self, Working Woman, Victoria, and her first novel: The Dressmaker. She lives in New York City. About A Northern Light in Provence: Ilse Erlund is a translator who lives in a house on stilts along the west coast of Greenland. Isolated and restless in her world by the sea, she convinces her publisher to pay for a trip to the country she has never visited but whose language she speaks fluently: France. Her mission is to translate the verses of Geoffrey “Po” Labaye, a charismatic poet known as “the last living troubadour of Provence.” Upon arrival in the medieval hilltop village of Belle Rivière, Ilse falls under the spell of the Provençal way of life, captivated by the air, the sun, the vibrant spring colors, and the dulcet sounds of the dialect. Soon enough, Ilse is captivated by the poet, too, and she and Po develop a daily rhythm and warm camaraderie—which is disrupted by the arrival of the poet's son, Frey. Though he has a fiancée back in Paris, Frey turns his attentions to Ilse, and suddenly she is forced to learn another language, one her translation skills have not prepared her to decode. Where—and with whom—does her future lie? With an eye and ear attuned to the sensibilities of French life, Elizabeth Birkelund has created a love story about a woman forced to choose between the security of her quiet northern home and the possibility of the life of her dreams. All along Russia's border, in former Soviet republics, the Ukrainian war has prompted a new, more assertive sense of national identity. They're asking whether – despite independence – they've really overcome the legacy of 'Russian colonialism.' Meanwhile activists from the many ethnic minorities inside Russia are increasingly describing themselves as victims of colonialism too - and demanding self-determination. The debate about the 'imperial' nature of Russia has now also been taken up by strategists, politicians and scholars in the West. Many are questioning their own previous 'Russocentric' assumptions, and asking whether 'decolonising' Russia is the only way to stop the country threatening its neighbours - and world peace. But some also wonder whether the term 'decolonisation' is really relevant to Russia – and what it means. Is it about challenging the '0imperial mindset' of its rulers – and perhaps of every ordinary Russian? Or perhaps it means dismembering the country itself? Or, as some claim, is the very idea of 'decolonising Russia' just part of an attempt by the West to extend its own neo-colonialist influence? Tim Whewell dissects a new and vital controversy with the help of historians, thinkers and activists from Russia and its neighbours, the West and the Global South.Sound mixing by Hal Haines Production coordinators: Sabine Schereck, Maria Ogundele, Katie Morrison Editor: Richard Fenton Smith Extract from "Winnie-the-Pooh" by A A Milne, read by Alan Bennett

Nina Stibbe was fifty when she first became a published writer with Love Nina, a collection of letters she wrote to her sister in the 1980s about her time working as a very inexperienced young nanny for Mary-Kay Wilmers, editor of the London Review of books. She found herself running a home where Alan Bennett often appeared at suppertime and other famous neighbours and people would pop round - though Nina had often no idea who they were. Her affectionate, witty memoir won non-fiction Book of the Year in 2014 and was adapted by Nick Hornby into a BBC TV series. After nannying, Nina worked in publishing and then moved to Cornwall where she lived with her partner and children. Since the success of Love Nina, she has written six more books, four of them novels. Her latest, Went to London, Took the Dog, charts her first return to the capital for twenty years. It's a break from domestic life back in Cornwall, or perhaps a fresh start altogether. Nina's musical choices include music by Handel, Mozart, Brahms and Benjamin Clementine.

On the last week of July, 2023, Phil and JF were delighted to speak at Shannon Taggart's Science of Things Spiritual Symposium in Lily Dale, the nerve centre of the Spiritualist movement. As speakers, your hosts were part of an inspiring lineup of scholars, artists, and researchers committed to exploring the borderlands of art, science, religion, and the paranormal. They also had the honour of launching the symposium with a live recording held on the evening of the July 27th. The topic was Frederic W. H. Myers' autobiographical essay, "Fragments of Inner Life," first published in full in 1961, some sixty years after the author's death. Myers was one of the original members of the Society for Psychical Research in England. A poet and classicist, he remained committed to the scientific promise of paranormal investigation until the end of his life. His book Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death, also published posthumously, argues that psychical studies have confirmed, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that death is just the beginning. In this talk, JF and Phil discuss Myers' relevance to 21st-century thinking on the Weird. Hello to you listening in Wembley Downs, Australia!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. My local Sno-Isle library in Freeland has supplied me with books of every size, author and topic for the past 5 years. Inside a book I roam around the world, through destinations near and far, ideas, challenges, cultures, mysteries, thrillers, other lives. I gain perspective, points of view, attitudes, stories, winners, losers, heroines, and dastardly deeds. That is just the beginning. There is something more. From Alan Bennett's play, The History Boys: "The best moments in reading are when you come across something—a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things—which you had thought special and particular to you. Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out and taken yours."Question: When has a book reached out and taken your hand? How did it feel? What happened next? You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! On last night's Panorama, Twitter insiders told the BBC that the company is no longer able to protect users from trolls, following lay-offs and changes under the owner Elon Musk. Lisa Jennings Young is the former head of Content Design at Twitter, and worked on safety features aiming to protect users from online hate, including misogyny. In October 2022, Lisa's entire team was laid off, and she herself chose to leave in late November. To find out more about her time at Twitter, and how proactive design can protect women and girls on social media, Nuala speaks to Lisa from her home in San Francisco. Heidi Thomas is best known as the writer and creator of Call The Midwife. Her newest project is a film adaptation of the Alan Bennett play Allelujah. Set in a much-loved geriatric hospital in Yorkshire – The Beth - that's been earmarked for closure, it stars Jennifer Saunders as the formidable sister in charge. Heidi joins Nuala in the Woman's Hour studio to talk about what it's been like to go from writing about the start of life to the end. Feminism isn't as modern as we might think, and the patriarchy is more fragile than it appears. That's the basis of a new book by science journalist Angela Saini. In The Patriarchs: How Men Came to Rule, Angela uncovers stories of female-led societies, and tells Nuala the lessons they might teach us. Young women are using codewords to describe their experiences of sex, and in some cases assault, on social media platform TikTok. The hashtag ‘Mascara' has racked up more than 100 million views over the past month or so, and is the latest code that's developed to avoid TikTok's censorship filters. Sophie Smith Galer joins Nuala to discuss this latest trend. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Lucinda Montefiore
