Hannah sheds light on the distinction between motherhood as a relationship and caregiving as a role, advocating for a fairer distribution of caregiving responsibilities and the crucial need for societal support for mothers. Redefining Motherhood as a Relationship and Caregiving as a Job with Hannah Olson

Hannah Olson is redefining motherhood, and while her take may be hard to wrap your head around at first, it's actually quite simple. What she's saying is that motherhood is a relationship, and caregiving is a job - all those messages we get about laundry, vacuuming, even changing diapers and driving the kids to practice being "mom tasks," it's B.S. Yes, many moms are the primary caregiver to their children, and that is amazing! But motherhood is about the relationship we share with our children, and that is the big difference. In this episode, Hannah and I talk about:Separating the relationship of motherhood from the job of caregivingHow equating motherhood to caregiving work leads to mom guiltSeeing motherhood as more than 18 years of caregivingThe value of caregiving, monetary and otherwiseWhy moms deserve to have a conversation about working out of the home, even if it means paying more for childcareA little about our guest:Hannah Olson loves creating, coaching, and connecting. She spends her time attempting to master sourdough, forgetting to water $30 Ikea plants, mishearing song lyrics, and hanging out with her husband and six children. Hannah founded Redefining Motherhood in 2021 to help women reduce mom guilt and experience more joy, by coaching them to see the difference between the job of caregiving and the relationship of motherhood. She is also the host of a (sometimes) weekly podcast, Rantish, where she discusses topics she feels strongly about like Pretzel Jello Salad, Physical Therapy for pelvic floor, and current Instagram trends. She also loves to have guests on the show and hopes to foster a community of belonging and connection for lonely women everywhere. Amy Carlson's metallic blue body was covered in glitter, wrapped in a sleeping bag, and draped in Christmas lights when police found her on the night of April 16, 2021. The 45-year-old leader of the “Love Has Won” cult weighed just 75 pounds; her eyes had been removed.  Carlson, known as “Mother God,” proselytized along with her followers by livestreaming around the clock, preaching a QAnon-themed spirituality that they monetized by selling colloidal silver and New Age tchotchkes. When her body was found, it was discovered that her inner circle had prepared for Carlson to be picked up by galactic starships from their Crestone, CO compound.  Julian and Matthew discuss HBO's new docu-series, “Love Has Won: The Mother God Cult,” directed by Hannah Olson. Hannah Olson is an artist and mother of 3 girls, living in Utah, USA. Originally from Luton England, she has enjoyed being creative from a very young age. In High School she had 2 really wonderful art teachers that pushed her and introduced her to many mediums like watercolour, charcoal and pencils, and encouraged her to pursue it. A high school teacher's words have remained with her "It doesn't matter what you do, but always stay creative."In College she decided to take all of the art classes she possibly could and discovered oil painting and fell in love with it. She tends not to stick to the same mediums, or subject matters, mixing it up between charcoal and watercolours, painting portraits, landscapes and still life's. Hannah really enjoys the challenge of working with new materials and subjects. She is inspired by many artists like William Bouguereau, Sargent, Van Gogh, Carl Rungius and more recent artists such as Jenedy Paige, Cesar Santos, and Andrew Tischler. While being a mum to three little ones is not easy, she finds time to paint and draw in between nappy changes, piles of wash, and endless messes.Although her children are her main focus right now she can't wait for the chance to create more and inspire others through her work.Today we are joined by Hannah's 5 month old daughter Millie today in the podcast.Hannah- website / instagramPodcast - instagram / websiteIf today's episode is triggering for you in any way I encourage you to seek help from those around you, medical professionals or from resources on line. Brian Thompson chats with Hannah Olson, an advocate for people with disabilities and co-founder and CEO of Chronically Capable and Disclo. Through her companies, Hannah helps people with disabilities navigate their careers and companies manage employee health disclosures and accommodation requests. On the episode, Hannah discusses why she chose entrepreneurship after her aggressive treatment schedule for Lyme disease resulted in her having to leave her dream job. She also shares advice she received while fundraising and why disabilities are something to be celebrated. Episode Highlights The mission is at the center of mission-driven businesses. Hannah describes a mission-driven business as one that puts its mission at the center of everything it does. At her companies, she goes one step further by hiring people who are also centered around the mission of empowering and employing people with disabilities and chronic conditions. “It's less about the excitement of the business, but more so, at the end of the day, who are we helping? Who are we serving?” Hannah said. One business idea can lead to another. In May 2019, Hannah and her co-founder launched their first venture, Chronically Capable, to help people with disabilities and chronic conditions connect with inclusive employers. The company grew quickly, but as it did, Hannah learned about an unmet and unique need for HR professionals to manage employees' health conditions and accommodation requests in safely and privately. Hannah and her co-founder quickly realized they could turn that need into a business opportunity. They raised funding and launched their second venture, Disclo, in May 2022. Disclo takes the mission of Chronically Capable one step further by bringing compliance tools to HR managers. “We initially thought the problem was just being able to find a job and an employer who cared, but we realized there was a much, much bigger problem because if you get the job, how are you going to keep the job?” Hannah said. “But when it comes to compliance, it's not a nice-to-have anymore; it's a must have.” Sleep is a key business strategy. The entrepreneur culture espouses the value of hustle, but Hannah pointed out that you can't hustle hard without adequate sleep. That's why she said sleep is the foremost business strategy she has to share with listeners. “Sleep is so important for anyone, but especially for me as someone who has been recovering from a very, very bad illness and also as someone running a business,” Hannah said. “This hustle culture has this mentality that we have to be working, and the times you're not working, you're not doing anything. But if you don't sleep, you're not going to work well the next day.” Learn from no. When Hannah was raising funding for Disclo, she received about 120 rejections. After the first few, she took the advice of a friend to ask people who said no either to provide feedback she could use to adapt and change or to introduce her to three other people. “I started adopting that practice and I learned so much in a very short time,” Hannah said. “I was able to fundraise very, very quickly. In a month we went from not having any luck to people knocking at the door.” Resources + Links Chronically Capable: Website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn Disclo: Website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn,  Hannah's Social Media: Twitter, LinkedIn Brian's Social Media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook  About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast  Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. We begin by talking about Hannah's own personal experience with Lyme Disease, including the pushback she experienced by the medical system. Hannah also shares what it was like as a young professional entering the workforce while simultaneously trying to attend to her health. Then we dive into her work with Chronically Capable and the fight for employment for chronically ill and disabled individuals in general. We discuss the obstacles they face, employers biggest concerns (and why they are unfounded), employment vs. meaningful employment, and why it is good business to hire those who are chronically ill.
