Kicking things off with a blast of ‘80s nostalgia, we're taking on the 1986 BMX cult classic RAD, chosen by our newest Patreon supporter, Nick Bray! Packed with insane bike tricks and a Daniel LaRusso from Wish! Huge thanks to Nick for picking this one, time to dust off the old bike and practice some bunny hops.RAD was born out of the mid-1980s BMX biking craze, with Hollywood eager to capture the spirit of the sport just as skateboarding was making its big cinematic breakthrough. Directed by legendary stuntman-turned-director, Hal Needham, the film was crafted with a genuine love for high-flying stunts and underdog stories. The production pulled together a mix of professional BMX riders and actors, staging elaborate, gravity-defying race sequences that became the movie's signature. Shot primarily in Alberta, Canada, RAD managed to capture that small-town Americana vibe, despite the northern filming location, giving it a timeless, every-kid's-dream feel. While RAD wasn't a box office success at the time, it found a second life almost immediately on VHS, becoming a cult classic cherished by generations of fans. Its soundtrack, filled with upbeat anthems, and its earnest tone helped cement its status as a beloved underdog movie. Over the years, RAD developed a reputation as the definitive BMX film, inspiring countless kids to get on their bikes and dream big. Despite being out of print for years, its legend only grew, leading to a long-awaited 4K restoration and re-release decades later — proving you just can't keep a good tailwhip down.If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where dreams are built on two wheels and dirt tracks, one small-town kid dares to chase the impossible! RADfollows Cru Jones, a young BMX rider with big ambitions, as he faces off against corporate heavyweights and elite racers in the ultimate test of skill and heart — Helltrack! We're back! It's been too long since our last episode, but Rad Day is here and we couldn't let it go without celebrating it properly. What is Rad, you ask? Rad is every 80s sports movie you've ever seen, wrapped up in a package of BMX bikes, cheesy butt rock and more synthesizers than you can jump a bike over. It's ridiculous, it's kinda lame, but's also so completely RAD. Helltrack is coming to town, and our hero Cru has a chance to prove to the BMX world he's the best racer around. And, in the process, he manages to woo Christian, a racer from a professional team who also happens to be played by a pre-Full House Lori Loughlin. Anyway... It's Rad! There's no denying that the film Rad is a cult classic. Released in 1986 at the height of BMX popularity, it artfully combines BMX freestyle and BMX racing, with a classic underdog story based on the life of BMX freestyle legend, Eddie Fiola. Today, Eddie joins Simon Stewart, along with BMX Hall of Famer Jen Zeuner, in a fun conversation about this iconic bike film where we discuss how Eddie got the call to be in the movie; director Hal Needham being a badass; getting knocked out; the terrifying drop into the Helltrack; wearing Lori Loughlin's pants, plus a whole lot more. Alex Howard of Conditions, Sleeping with Sirens, and Hoodie Allen joins the pod this week! Cru Jones is an aggressive teenage BMX racer who lives in a small town with his younger sister Wesley and their mother. Cru is faced with a tough decision: qualify for Helltrack, or take the SAT in order to attend college. Winning Helltrack means $100,000, a new Chevrolet Corvette, and fame. Cru chooses the former option, against his mother's wishes. The Helltrack race is endorsed by the city...and by Duke Best, the duplicitous president of FAB (the Federation of American Bicyclists), who's also the owner of Mongoose Racing. Duke keeps adjusting the rules, in order to keep Cru out of the race, and also to ensure BMX star Bart Taylor has an easy road to victory...thus providing a financial windfall for Mongoose Racing, Bart's sponsor. Numerous BMX racers show up for Helltrack. Cru meets Christian Hollings, who becomes his romantic interest. At Cru's senior prom, he and Christian perform freestyle bike stunts on the dance floor...to the awe of his classmates. After being blocked from the race due to a last-minute rule-change on participant sponsorship, Cru is ready to give up Helltrack...until Wesley customizes a shirt for him to wear at the event. It reads "Cru is...RAD." Inspired by this, Cru and his friends use the money he won from qualifying ($10,000) to found a small T-shirt business: "Rad Racing." However, a few days before the race, Duke changes the rules yet again...claiming any company sponsoring a racer must be worth at least $50,000. When the townspeople hear about this, they rally around Cru; their contributions, particularly a generous donation from wealthy Mr. Timmer, provide Rad Racing with enough money for Cru to enter Helltrack. During Helltrack, Duke bribes the Reynolds twins to take out Cru, but they fail. In the final stretch of the race, Taylor and Cru face each other; Cru ultimately wins Helltrack, while Taylor is dropped from Mongoose Racing. Now aware of Duke's true nature, the entire Mongoose team quits on him. Cru offers Taylor a spot in Rad Racing, while Duke is asked to resign from FAB. EP78 | Sequelto RAD How RAD are you? In 1986 Hal Needham, the director of Smokey and The Bandit was tasked by Talia Shire from the Rocky films to direct a “sportsploitation” film in the style of The Karate Kid, but with BMX racing. Who knew that by including scenes of Bike Dancing, Ass Sliding and the wicked BMX danger of Helltrack he would create an 80’s cult classic like RAD? More than 30 years later, this wild 80’s movie starring Bill Allen and Lori Laughlin is still not commercially available, but that won’t stop Adam and a duo of guest hosts from the Cult Film Club podcast from pitching their epic sequel ideas for RAD 2 in this podcast adventure. Paxton Holley from the NerdLunch podcast and I Read Movies delivers not 1, but 2 RAD sequels in order to create a trilogy that completes the journey of earnest BMX biker, Cru Jones. While RAD mega-fan, Shawn Robare from Branded In The 80’s imagines an Infinity War style crossover film featuring characters featured in Thrashin’, North Shore, Gleaming The Cube and Airborne coming together to get EXTREME! Meanwhile Adam combines the disciplines of BMX and Kung Fu for an unforgettable RAD 2 scenario that kicks the fun into high gear. Listen now and get ready to walk this sucker! VHS Rewind! Season 4 Episode 6 Due to unprecedented demand. Because our audience asked for it. VHS Rewind is covering another Hal Needham flick. Our previous episode, spotlighting director Hal Needham’s incredible RAD, was one of VHS Rewind’s all-time most downloaded episodes. RAD, the film, was a really great surprise for us – we hadn’t seen it before deciding to cover it for the show, and, wow, it was just amazing. Listen to that episode to hear all about it. The great thing is, there are still quite a few films from Needham’s golden (directorial) period (that period beginning in 1977 with the classic SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT and lasting through BODY SLAM in 1986) that we at VHS Rewind haven’t seen. We cannot wait to tackle BODY SLAM and, especially, THE VILLAIN (1979). Our focus for this episode is Needham’s equally incredible MEGAFORCE (1982). We at VHS Rewind remember the poster for this flick from when it was first released (and we were just kids) but we never did see this (not even when the flick was released to VHS). Now, we can’t wait to show it to our kids. MEGAFORCE may be missing RAD’s incredible soundtrack of power ballads and power guitar, but it surpasses RAD’s already inspired lunacy – a romantic skydiving scene (yes, you read that right, complete with syrupy love music, and that almost 5 minutes) that rivals (no, that betters) RAD’s bike dance-off, flying motorcycles so memorably executed with the cheesiest effects work imaginable, an incredible lycra (?) wardrobe for the titular team, explosions, explosions, explosions and a great cast filled with terrible actors delivering terrible dialogue terribly (with the notable exception of Henry Silva, a sterling example of a great actor have a great time with a terrible script and retaining his dignity against all odds).
VHS Rewind! Season 4 Episode 5 RAD has always been an important movie to me - in my adult years it reminds me of my youth while at the same time when I was a kid it taught me how to be independent and basically jump on my bike and explore. Great movie and all should watch it!

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-064-Rad.mp3 Download MP3 We have two criteria for any movie we select for Search for Schlock. One, that it be directed by Hal Needham, who brought us some of our favorite movies about illegal coast-to-coast racing. And two, that it be about BMX bikes, which, as you know, is what we're all about. Rad is a perfect example of exactly what we're looking for, plus it features Adrian from Rocky, your favorite Martian, and Uncle Jesse's girlfriend. Will Cru realize his dreams of owning a Corvette by beating an anonymously evil pro-biker at Helltrack -- or will the race's duplicitous financiers succeed in sabotaging Cru's one shot at fame and fortune? We’re talking about the classic 1986 sportsploitation flick Rad starring Bill Allen, Talia Shire, Lori Loughlin, Bart Connors, Jack Weston and Ray Walston. Directed by the legendary Hal Needham (Smokey & The Bandit, Cannonball Run, and Megaforce), the movie centers on BMX junkie Cru Jones who only wants to get radical on his bike with friends Becky & Luke, challenge the local cop to races in a lumber yard, and get his morning paper route finished by 7:15am. All his mom wants is for him to go to take his SATs and get into college. But when Duke Best, head of the Mongoose bicycle company, partners with the local businesses to bring a professional BMX track called Helltrack to Cochrane, Cru sees and opportunity to do what he does best, which is riding his bike. But before he can race, Cru has to prove that he can qualify, which is easier said than done when Best, along with his stuck up hot shot riders Bart Taylor and Rod & Rex, the Reynolds Twins, keep putting up barriers he has to hurdle. Along the way he learns who his true friends are, as well as winning the heart of beautiful BMX champion Christian, but does he have enough thunder in his heart to beat Helltrack? We talk about our favorite scenes, amazeballs dance sequences, the awesome soundtrack, and what makes this film still work after almost 30 years.
