We're back! It's been too long since our last episode, but Rad Day is here and we couldn't let it go without celebrating it properly. What is Rad, you ask? Rad is every 80s sports movie you've ever seen, wrapped up in a package of BMX bikes, cheesy butt rock and more synthesizers than you can jump a bike over. It's ridiculous, it's kinda lame, but's also so completely RAD. Helltrack is coming to town, and our hero Cru has a chance to prove to the BMX world he's the best racer around. And, in the process, he manages to woo Christian, a racer from a professional team who also happens to be played by a pre-Full House Lori Loughlin. Anyway... It's Rad! We're back! For our 95th episode, we bring you a collection of soundtrack cuts from 1995. It was the height of the 90s, when 80s pop stars showed up in the most random movies, fledgling rock bands popped up on teen cult classics, and also Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh Eagles teamed up with Lita Ford to do the theme song for a RoboCop TV series. 1995 was definitely a mood... Also appearing in this episode: Tom Jones covering Lenny Kravitz for the Jerky Boys movie, The Proclaimers covering The Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love" for the movie Bye Bye Love, we get a few cuts from Green Day, Wax, and Salt N' Pepa. Also Bryan Adams performs the drippiest, horniest song ever written... Ladies and gentlemen, this is 1995. Hello all you OST Party fans out there in radioland! Are you ready to rock?! On this episode we're looking at the 1994 comedy AIRHEADS! Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi and OST Party fave Brendan Fraser are The Lone Rangers, a down and out LA rock trio. In a last ditch effort to land a record deal, they take a radio station hostage and demand to have their music heard. The movie may be a grim foreshadowing of FM rock radio's future, but the movie's a hell of a lot of fun. And the soundtrack is pretty neat too. We get a slammin' opening credits song from Motorhead and Ice T, a weird Smiths cover from Anthrax, an even weirder Van Halen cover from Four Non Blondes, and naturally, the #1 hit single from the movie's own Lone Rangers! So strap yourselves in and get ready to rock! We're ringing in the new year with a film we've been wanting to cover for a long time. It's the 1978 cult film FM, about a Los Angeles radio station fighting back against The Man with some of the coolest rock jams of the 70s. Or at least, that's what the movie is supposed to be about. Mostly it's an excuse for Martin Mull to ham things up while they shoot a Linda Ronstadt concert. And maybe we'll get celebrity cameos from Tom Petty and REO Speedwagon along the way. It's barely a movie, and not even a good one at that. Really though, FM is more famous for its soundtrack album, which is absolutely STACKED with some of the top rock hits of the era. We get two cuts from Steely Dan, including that excellent title track, as well as songs from Bob Seger, Boston, Foreigner, Boz Scaggs, and a whooole lot more! So put on your denim jackets and let's rock & roll! We may have missed Halloween, but so what? On this episode we take you back to sunny Los Angeles for a look at the soundtrack to 1992's Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the feature film blueprint for one of the most iconic TV series of the 90s. This soundtrack is pretty typical of what you'd find on a movie soundtrack in 1992. You've got the requisite covers from artists like Divinyls and Mary's Danish, the sensitive guy rock from Matthew Sweet and Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Cult and Ozzy Osbourne giving us a couple of random metal tracks, and hey why not, have some C+C Music Factory! This week we mourn the passing of the incomparable Paul Reubens. His most famous creation, Pee-wee Herman, taught kids of all stripes that there's beauty in the weird and kitschy parts of the world, and that just because we grow up doesn't mean we have to stop being silly. And throughout his career, Reubens incorporated lots of music into the Pee-wee persona. So on this episode we'll take you through the musical history of Pee-wee Herman. We'll start with his 1981 stage show, dig into his three feature films, and highlight some of the strange places Pee-wee has popped up along the way. Greetings bluntskulls! On this episode we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Coneheads! Wayne's World proved there was a market for SNL comedies in the 90s, so naturally here's a movie based on the Coneheads, space aliens from the planet Remulak just trying to fit in among regular humans. It's basically an excuse for Dan Aykroyd to be a big weirdo for 90 minutes. And the soundtrack is equally weird. We've got a handful of really great, classic tracks (including an inexplicable hit single from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), a couple of really great cover songs, as well as one of the worst cover songs we have ever covered on this show. And, of course, Dan Aykroyd has to have a song too. A land of contrasts, this album! It's been 25 years since The X-Files jumped to the big screen! The first of two features based on the show, Fight The Future is The X-Files as a big-budget summer blockbuster. There's alien conspiracies, explosions, races through cornfields, killer bees for some reason... There's a lot to unpack with this film. And naturally, it came with a pretty stellar soundtrack. The usual suspects of mid-90s rock are all here, including Foo Fighters, Tonic, Better Than Ezra, Ween, and more! We even get a couple cover tunes, courtesy of X and Filter which, honestly, the less said about that one the better... On this episode we go back to the 90s, an era when studios had no problem grabbing any old comic book and turning it into the craziest movie you've ever seen. Case in point: Tank Girl! In a future wasteland where water is worth more than gold, Lori Petty teams up with Naomi Watts to steal a tank, befriend some kangaroo people, and save the world from a robot-armed Malcolm McDowell. And along the way we get a Cole Porter song, a movie rap courtesy of co-star Ice-T, and all kinds of tunes from some 90s alt-rock greats! A new year brings a new series here on the OST Party! This week's film, the 1999 sci-fi rom-com Blast from the Past, marks the finale of our neo-swing trilogy, and also the beginning of our series on the films of Brendan Fraser. Blast from the Past, as Libby's husband Ian pointed out, is like if you crossed Encino Man with The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And the soundtrack reflects that weird clash of tones. You've got the square 60s tunes of Perry Como, the neo-swing revival of The Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers, and modern 90s rock in acts like Everclear, Dishwalla and Sonichrome. The whole thing is a fascinating time capsule of where we were in the late-90s, and how that era is well and truly behind us. Time marches on, and so do we! This episode runs the gamut of everything from the new jack swing of Ghostbusters II to the classic rock of Hot Fuzz, and a whole lot in between! This podcast has been overrun by gremlins! We were supposed to do a Thanksgiving episode on Planes Trains & Automobiles, but the powers that be said, "No, you're doing Gremlins." Those powers may or may not be gremlins. (Send help!) Anyway, Gremlins has been described as It's A Wonderful Life by way of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and while that thematic well runs deep, the film is mostly concerned with lots and lots of puppet mayhem! The soundtrack album is short, but features some strange choices, including tracks from Peter Gabriel, Quarterflash and Michael Sembello. We'll also discuss a few of the holiday needledrops, which have become classic scenes in their own right. So grab a glass of egg nog and join us for the wild ride that is Gremlins! We're returning to the world of Edgar Wright this week with the soundtrack to Hot Fuzz! Wright has a reputation for movie soundtracks that are impeccably curated, and Hot Fuzz is no different. The story of The Only Good Cop In England solving a string of murders in the small village of Sandford finds Wright leaning heavily on classic rock tunes from every era. The film is an absolute riot, but the soundtrack is equally impressive. Sporting tracks from classic acts The Kinks, The Troggs, and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, but also more modern artists such as The Fratellis, Supergrass and Eels. This week we're dipping back into the world of TV. Why, you ask? Because we can do whatever we want! Only 90s Kids may remember the phenomenon known as Dinosaurs, an ABC sitcom that ran from 1991 to 1995 and followed the adventures of dinosaur Earl Sinclair and his prehistoric family. Produced by the Jim Henson company, Dinosaurs was not only a marvel of live-action puppetry, but also just some damn funny television. And in 1992, they produced the album "Big Songs". You'd think this would be a compilation of songs from the show, right? Wrong! This album features twelve tracks recorded by the show's cast exclusively for the album. Are you ready to get real old-timey? This week we discuss the folk and bluegrass revival of O Brother, Where Art Thou? Loosely based on "The Odyssey", Joel and Ethan Coen pulled together an all-star lineup of country musicians to score this wacky road trip through Depression-era Mississippi. The film is a hoot, but the soundtrack was a sensation. The album hit #1 on the charts over a year after its release, and went on to sell 8 million copies. "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" and "O Death" won all the awards, but the real standouts on this album come from Allison Krauss, Gillian Welch, The Whites, and more! The rest is all about idealizing modern notions of coolness all set to a soundtrack of swing and lounge revival goodness. Swingers was one of the pillars of the mid-90s indie film boom, and also a signpost for the toxic masculinity of the era. In between all of that is a soundtrack that Libby calls "wall-to-wall bangers". This week marks the 30th anniversary of Wayne's World! Not only was this movie spun off from the wildly popular sketches on Saturday Night Live, but Wayne's World was instrumental in reviving Queen's popularity with its iconic "Bohemian Rhapsody" sequence. This week's episode is brought to you by an unquenchable thirst for 80s teen romance of the worst kind. 1985's Vision Quest follows Matthew Modine as a high school senior training for the big wrestling match while also lusting after Linda Fiorentino, the drifter who somehow winds up living in his house. It's an after-school special about eating disorders that thinks it's a profound, Salinger-esque statement on growing up. But don't let that fool you, because the soundtrack is stacked with hits! We get radio rock hits from Journey, Foreigner and Sammy Hagar. We get a pair of dance-pop hits courtesy of Madonna. Red Rider's "Lunatic Fringe", Ronnie James Dio, The Style Council and more! Happy New Year! We kick off 2022 with a bona fide New Year's movie: Ghostbusters II! The gang returns to fight an evil spirit trapped in a painting who wants to kidnap and inhabit a baby on New Year's Eve. It's an extremely silly film, but the soundtrack is almost wall to wall bangers! New Jack Swing was on the rise in a big way in 1989, and bolstered by singles from Bobby Brown and Run DMC, this soundtrack was one of the breakout hits of that summer. In addition, we get tracks from New Edition, Doug E. Fresh, Glenn Frey, and the requisite Oingo Boingo cut. And, for some reason, they dug up an Elton John B-side to fill out the album. So fire up those proton packs and join us as we ring in the new year! SHOW NOTES: Ghostbusters II is available to stream here! Happy Life Day everyone! On this episode we observe every Wookiee's favorite holiday with a look at the Star Wars Holiday Special! The year was 1978, Star Wars was still the hottest movie on the planet, so the folks at CBS smashed together a two-hour primetime special that is still leaving Star Wars fans baffled to this very day. We got celebrity guest stars Art Carney, Harvey Korman and Bea Arthur, musical performances from Diahann Carroll and Jefferson Starship, and a weird story about the Empire terrorizing Chewbacca's family around the holidays. Happy Thanksgiving, gang! On this week's show, we're giving thanks for a comedy legend and discuss some our favorite songs from the films of Mel Brooks! In a film career spanning five decades, Mel Brooks has produced some of the greatest comedies of all time. But not one to simply tell a joke, Brooks goes all out with elaborate musical numbers, Borscht Belt comedy routines, and yes, even the occasional pop theme song. On this episode, we cover the whole range of Brooks' filmography, from his original 1967 film version of The Producers to its 2001 Broadway musical adaptation. AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN! Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Spaceballs, The Twelve Chairs, we go all over the place tonight! This week's soundtrack is 100% heavy metal! Or rather, it's the soundtrack to the 1981 animated cult classic Heavy Metal! And to help us break it all down, we brought in a pair of ringers. Libby's husband Ian Austin is here to give us the history of the Heavy Metal comics, while Eeon Smith is on hand to provide commentary on the laserdisc format. And of course, all four of us dive into the soundtrack to this weird, horny mess of a film. So how's that soundtrack? It's an all-star lineup of classic hard rock acts like Cheap Trick, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey and Blue Oyster Cult! Oh, you were hoping for some heavy metal? Well there's Black Sabbath. And Steely Dan's Donald Fagen. That guy's totally metal. Look, it's a crazy, mixed up universe out there, and Heavy Metal has the goods to prove it. So strap on your battle armor bikini and raise your space swords high. It's about to get weird... Happy Halloween! This week we bring you an episode about the much maligned 80s comedy sequel Teen Wolf Too. Jason Bateman, in his feature film debut, stars as the younger cousin to Michael J. Fox's original Teen Wolf. This time around, the werewolf goes to college, joins the school's boxing team, and... Look, it's literally the first film all over again. That's all you need to know. But believe it or not, this film has a surprisingly decent soundtrack! We get two standout tracks from Oingo Boingo, a solid mix of 80s synthpop (B.G. Vox), southern rock (Desert Rose Band) and new wave (Real Life), and also an extremely misguided cover of The Contours' "Do You Love Me". This week's podcast is all about the soundtrack to Grosse Pointe Blank! John Cusack plays contract killer Martin Blank, whose next job just happens to take place in his hometown on the weekend of his 10-year high school reunion. And to help us break down this album, we've arranged a high school reunion of our own! Joining us this week is one of Libby's actual high school classmates, McKenzie Cassidy, author of the book Here Lies a Father! As for the soundtrack? It was personally curated by John Cusack and The Clash's Joe Strummer, and it's almost entirely 80s new wave and two-tone ska. We got The Clash, The Specials, The English Beat, Violent Femmes, and Guns N Roses for some reason. So get out your yearbooks and put on your nametags, because the reunion's about to start! We pay tribute this week to the late, great Norm Macdonald with a look at his 1998 cult classic (and OST Party favorite) Dirty Work! And to help us do our own dirty work, we've enlisted the help of Johnny-5 from the Christmas Creeps podcast. Three Norm fans in one show. What could possibly go wrong?! Now, this film doesn't have an official soundtrack album, but you best believe there are plenty of songs for us to discuss. Dirty Work is basically 1998 in movie form, so we get hit singles from Third Eye Blind, Chumbawamba, and Better Than Ezra, as well as appearances from AC/DC, The Reverend Horton Heat, and some weird song about pina coladas... Yabba Dabba Doo! We couldn't let the summer end without covering a ridiculous summer blockbuster, and The Flintstones is most certainly that. The Steven Spielberg-produced, live-action adaptation of the 60s cartoon has to be seen to be believed. It's got gaudy caveman sets and costumes, John Goodman hamming it up as Fred Flintstone, and a wild soundtrack... Good lord, the soundtrack. One half of this album features awkward attempts at caveman humor by the likes of The B(C)-52s, Big Audio Dynamite, and Us3. The other half is a bizarre collection of Flintstones novelty songs that predate the movie. And most of the tracks on this album feature artists or songs we've covered on this show already, including return appearances from Weird Al Yankovic and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. And she soon learns the hard way that once you're in, you're in for life... The soundtrack is an expertly curated grab bag of 80s new wave artists. We've got singles from Debbie Harry, Chris Isaak, Ziggy Marley and Sinead O'Connor, all specifically recorded for this album! There's also tracks from New Order, The Tom Tom Club, and The Feelies. No movie put a stamp on the mid-90s quite like Amy Heckerling's Clueless. Loosely adapted from Jane Austen's "Emma", Clueless follows a year in the life of Beverly Hills teen Cher as she plays matchmaker to teacher and student alike (but not, like, at the same time). And the soundtrack is the rare album that actually helps tell the story. With tracks from 90s mainstays Luscious Jackson, Coolio, Cracker, Smoking Popes and more, the Clueless soundtrack is full of angst, social satire, and just some really solid tunes. Also in this episode, we encounter more 90s glam rock covers, Libby reminisces about the clothes that got away, and we fall backwards into a new name for ska! We've been threatening to do this for a while, and now it's finally here. This week we're discussing the soundtrack to 2000's Me, Myself & Irene. If you're not familiar, it's the film that closed out Jim Carrey's run of blockbuster 90s comedies with a resounding thud. Carrey plays Charlie, a mild-mannered cop with a split personality. He also plays Hank, Charlie's deranged alter ego. Renee Zellweger is here as well. The rest really isn't important. And the soundtrack is equally split down the middle. Half the album's songs are your usual suspects of late-90s radio rock staples. The other half is a bizarre collection of Steely Dan songs covered by modern artists such as Wilco, Ivy, Ben Folds Five, and Smash Mouth. Yes, Smash Mouth is back and they're doing Steely Dan. This week we dive into David Byrne's 1986 slice-of-life film True Stories! While on tour with Talking Heads and Stop Making Sense, Byrne concocted a feature film about a town where all sorts of tabloid headlines came true. It's silly, it's strange, and it's beautiful in its own way. There's truly nothing like it. As for the album itself, Talking Heads deliver a handful of classic tunes, but we also get some wonderful instrumental pieces, as well as performances from John Goodman, Annie McEnroe, Tito Larriva, and more! It's Rex Manning Day here at the OST Party, so this week we're joined by Johnny-5 from the Christmas Creeps podcast to discuss the soundtrack to Empire Records! In the grand tradition of 90s hangout comedies like Clerks and Dazed and Confused, this film chronicles a day in the life of a record store full of hormonal teens. Whether you love it or not entirely depends on if you saw this film as a hormonal teen... This album comes from that moment in time when grunge was on the decline and a whole truckload of college rock and jangle pop acts swooped in to fill the void. French robot dance-pop duo Daft Punk released their album "Discovery" in 2001, and commissioned artist Leiji Matsumoto to create a companion feature film, telling the story of a rock band from outer space, kidnapped and molded into Earth's Next Big Thing.
