Shoot us a Text. It's a great Tuesday to sell some cars as we talk about LA's announcement of a car-less Olympics (oh the irony). We also talk about the effectiveness of Kia's fix for rampant thefts, as well as the large group of workers feeling stuck. Los Angeles, a city synonymous with car culture, is casting it's vision for the 2028 Olympic Games to be a "no-car Games." Mayor Karen Bass has announced plans to rely on public transportation instead of private vehicles, challenging the city's deeply ingrained car dependency. The city is advancing "Twenty-eight by '28," aiming to complete 28 transit projects by 2028, funded by voter-approved sales taxes.Bass is urging local businesses to adopt remote work and flexible hours during the Games to help reduce traffic. The plan includes bringing in 3,000 buses from around the country to bolster the city's public transportation system.Mayor Bass stated, "We're already working to create jobs by expanding our public transportation system in order for us to have a no-car games."A recent study by the Highway Loss Data Institute revealed that the anti-theft software upgrade developed by Kia and Hyundai has been highly effective, reducing theft claim rates by 53% for eligible vehicles. This comes after a surge in thefts following viral videos showing how to hotwire certain models lacking immobilizers.Kia and Hyundai vehicles from 2011-22 were targeted after a viral video exposed a security flaw. The software upgrade, offered in February 2023, extends the alarm duration and requires the key to be in the ignition to start the vehicle.Vehicles that received the upgrade showed a 64% drop in whole vehicle theft. Both companies have distributed over a million upgrades and provided steering wheel locks for ineligible vehicles.A $200 million settlement was reached for affected owners, though it has yet to be approved by the judge."We're encouraged that theft rates in key cities have fallen significantly as more vehicle owners and lessees receive the free software upgrade," said a Kia spokesperson.American workers are increasingly feeling "stuck" in their jobs as fears of a potential recession loom. This has led to a significant drop in the rate at which employees are quitting, despite widespread job dissatisfaction. The quit rate in July 2024 fell to just 2.1%, the lowest since the pandemic began.Google searches for "quitting job" are down 11% in the past year, while searches for "stuck at work" have risen 9%.Online communities like the subreddit r/hatemyjob have seen membership double, reflecting growing frustration among workers.Recession fears are rising, with Google searches for "recession" up 230% in the past month."I feel trapped here," said Amanda, a 24-year-old histology worker. Hyundai and Kia are rolling out software updates to stem a raft of auto thefts related to a TikTok challenge that authorities believe has led to at least 14 reported crashes and eight fatalities. The updates are free for millions of vehicles that are missing a key anti-theft device, an issue that was exploited on social media and led to rampant theft of the cars. The software being released updates the theft alarm software logic to extend the length of the alarm sound from 30 seconds to one minute and requires the key to be in the ignition switch to turn the vehicle on. About 3.8 million Hyundais and 4.5 million Kias are eligible for the software update, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. Hyundai said updates began for nearly 4 million vehicles beginning with a million model year 2017-2020 Elantra, 2015-2019 Sonata and 2020-2021 Venue vehicles. The software upgrade is scheduled to be available for the remaining eligible vehicles by June. In September 2022, the Highway Loss Data Institute, a unit of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, found that Hyundais and Kias without immobilizers had a vehicle theft claim rate of 2.18 per 1,000 insured vehicle years. The rest of the industry combined had a rate of 1.21. An insured vehicle year is equal to one vehicle insured for one year. The institute compared vehicles from the 2015 through 2019 model years. It studied vehicle theft claims from 2021. Hyundai says all models produced after Nov. 1, 2021, have immobilizers as standard equipment. A TikTok social media challenge put a spotlight on the vehicles' lack of an immobilizer and resulted in at least 14 reported crashes and eight fatalities, according to the NHTSA. The challenge shows TikTok viewers how to hot-wire Kia and Hyundai cars with a USB cord and a screwdriver. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
We recently learned that Hyundai and Kia owners may be more likely to suffer from the same undesirable fate: having their vehicles stolen.Rampant thefts that were first reported in the Milwaukee area two years ago began to spread, along with the knowledge that certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles were deficient in a certain area that made them easier to steal.Since then, The Highway Loss Data Institute, a unit of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, has revealed that these vehicles were missing an anti-theft device within their keys, resulting in their being stolen at nearly twice the rate of other vehicles.According to Automotive News, Hyundai believes it has come up with a solution to mitigate the problem, but vehicle owners might not like it. Why? Because the anti-theft kit developed by the automaker is reportedly going to cost interested parties $170.As published in a follow-up report by Car & Driver, the kit was developed in partnership with Compustar. It contains a kill switch and an alarm and is available at more than 800 dealerships where it will take more than two hours to install. This installation could cost as much as $500, says an attorney representing plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit relating to the scenario. While Kia is also experiencing this high rate of theft, it is not yet offering any type of anti-theft kit, though it has offered free steering wheel locks to owners. Hyundai spokesperson Ira Gabriel told Car & Driver that the automaker is working on a software update, “to further secure these targeted vehicles" and it should be available for certain Hyundai vehicles in the first half of 2023 with others to follow.
Show #1432 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. GIVE AND TAKE: THE TAYCAN AS A BUFFER FOR THE POWER GRID - In future, when electric cars are not being driven, they could also feed energy back into the public power grid. As part of a wider pool of vehicles, they could effectively act as a power plant and help supply what is known as balancing power – electrical power that balances out fluctuations in the power grid. - A realistic pilot test conducted by Porsche, the grid operator TransnetBW and consulting firm Intelligent Energy System Services (IE2S), has demonstrated that electrical balancing power can be stored in the high-voltage batteries of an intelligent swarm of electric cars. Five series-production Taycan were connected to the power grid via the Porsche Home Energy Manager (HEM) both in a domestic environment and under laboratory conditions. Experts from Porsche Engineering had already adapted the software of these control centres beforehand for the field test. - With the expansion of renewable energies, balancing power will become even more important in the future for secure grid operation. This is because the power grid must always be stable, even though the wind and sun are not always producing consistent amounts of energy. If power grids are not stabilised at a constant 50 Hertz power frequency, there is a risk of power cuts. Until now, conventional power plants in particular have been responsible for cushioning these fluctuations. Using high-voltage batteries as a buffer would be a win-win situation: drivers of electric cars could be financially compensated for their contribution to balancing power. - During the pilot test, detailed measurements showed that the target values from the grid control system were met. This applied to both the primary (FCR: frequency containment reserve) and secondary (aFRR: automatic frequency restoration reserve) balancing power. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BYTON GATHERS MILLIONS IN FINANCING WITH FAW AS MAIN INVESTOR "The Chinese electric car startup Byton is about to complete a 500 million dollar financing round, which will be led by China’s state-owned car manufacturer FAW with approximately 100 million dollars." writes Chris Randall for the industry service electrive.com: "Bloomberg reports this with reference insiders familiar with the situation. FAW had already invested around 260 million dollars in Byton last year. The value of the start-up, which confirmed the departure of co-founder Carsten Breitfeld in the middle of last month, is expected to rise to 2.5 billion dollars after the latest round of financing. Neither Byton nor FAW, however, have made an official statement." Byton say of the M-Byte: "Conventional automotive styling features are giving way to innovative design icons. Side-view cameras replace side mirrors, iconic face recognition cameras provide user identification and BYTON Smart Surfaces show a situation-based interacting light design. The lounge feeling is intensified by outstanding digital provisions. First, be wide-eyed with the 49-inch coast-to-coast BYTON Shared Experience Display. Experience gesture control through BYTON Air Touch, interact using voice command and activate the main controls with the BYTON Driver Tablet. All these features underscore our vehicle’s extraordinary digital capability." https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/07/byton-gathers-millions-in-financing-with-faw-as-main-investor/ https://www.byton.com/m-byte-concept PRODUCTION-READY 2019 PORSCHE TAYCAN SPIED ON THE ROAD "An undisguised version of the all-electric Porsche Taycan has been snapped on the road ahead of its Frankfurt reveal" reports AutoExpress: "Porsche’s upcoming all-electric saloon has been caught almost completely undisguised ahead of its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. These latest spy shots give us our best look yet at the Taycan’s styling, which reveals a surprising amount of 718 Boxster and Cayman influence at the front end. Smaller details such as the retractable, flush door handles, and the conventional door mirrors can also be picked out. Porsche claims this powertrain will allow the Taycan production car to cover 0-62mph in under 3.5 seconds and 0-124mph in under 12 seconds before hitting a top speed of 155mph. Crucially, we’re told the performance will be repeatable, with the electric car able to accelerate hard "over and over again without losing performance.” Range is less important than charge speed, with an 800v system able to add 62 miles in 4minutes at peak charge rate. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/porsche/taycan/92807/production-ready-2019-porsche-taycan-spied-on-the-road NOW YOUR TESLA CAN AUTOMATICALLY PRE-ORDER FAULTY PARTS "Tesla is working to decrease service wait times by offering in-car problem diagnoses and pre-ordering of necessary parts." says InsideEVs.com: "Now, the Silicon Valley electric automaker's global fleet has not only the power to diagnose issues, but also to specify what parts may be needed. This means owners are made aware of potentially what problems the EV is undergoing, but also which parts Tesla should order ahead of your Service Center visit. Of course, if the issue is dire, you may need to get the car in for service right away. But, in many cases it may be able to wait a bit. So, with the latest update, you can see the problem, order the parts, and schedule your service at a later date. Hopefully, this is just another step to provide a better overall experience for Tesla owners." https://insideevs.com/news/348323/diagnose-pre-order-tesla-parts-automatically/ TESLA SHANGHAI GIGAFACTORY UPDATE "In the latest aerial flyover video of the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory, the main roof structure is now essentially complete, the walls along the east side of the main structure are also complete, and the rest is rapidly being finished. The progress over the past month has been spectacular, as we can see when comparing images over that time period." says CleanTechnica today posting a drone video by Jason Wang: "whilst there remains some construction work to be done on two taller structures at the north and south ends of the factory, the central body of the structure is now basically complete. The main roof is effectively in place (roof workers can be seen in the video, finishing up the last remaining small patches), the main east side wall is up (visible in the above shot), and the west side wall is near to completion. It’s an amazing transformation from the build state just one month ago, when the structure was still in the early phases and the first few roof panels were just starting to be laid down." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/07/tesla-shanghai-gigafactory-update-unbelievable-progress-over-a-single-month/ HERE ARE THE DETAILS ABOUT TESLA'S NEW INSURANCE "Tesla wants to sell its drivers cheaper car insurance based on owners’ driving and the performance of Tesla’s Autopilot driver-assistance system" says Jalopnik: "Tesla said it has better data on the performance of its cars and drivers than insurers do, and thinks it can lower insurance costs because of that." And from the WSJ: "Researchers at the insurance-industry-funded Highway Loss Data Institute have determined that the crash-avoidance features on the Tesla Model S are reducing physical-damage and injury-liability claims, while Autopilot is lowering collision claims." https://jalopnik.com/tesla-plans-to-offer-owners-potentially-cheaper-insuran-1834554733 MITIE SELECTS PODPOINT AS SOLE CHARGEPOINT SUPPLIER "UK facilities management and professional services company, Mitie, is moving ahead with plans to electrify 20% of its fleet of smaller vehicles by 2020." says fleeteurope.com: "Mitie, which employs 54,000 people across the UK and operates a fleet of more than 3,500 compact vans and cars, has opted for Pod Point as its charge-point partner. Pod Point will support Mitie by installing 800 chargepoints at Mitie and client offices and employee homes by the end of 2020." https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/new-energies/united-kingdom/article/mitie-selects-pod-point-ev-recharging?a=THA13&t%5B0%5D=Pod%20Point&curl=1 2020 HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC GETS A 11 KW ON-BOARD CHARGER "Hyundai Motor just deleted a press release where it informed that the new model year Hyundai Kona Electric is going to get a 11 kW on-charger in Europe. Fortunately Stefan Kopeinig saved a screenshot with the important information from the deleted press release." write Pedro for PushEVs.com today: "Besides the new 3-phase 11 kW on-board charger, the new Hyundai Kona Electric also gets the new Hyundai Blue Link app, optional new centre display touch-screen and heated rear seats. In Europe, 11 kW on-board chargers should be standard by now, with an additional charger in parallel to reach 22 kW as an option. LG Chem is already producing 11 kW on-board chargers – aimed to the European market – with an impressive energy efficiency of 95 %." https://pushevs.com/2019/05/07/2020-hyundai-kona-electric-gets-a-11-kw-on-board-charger/ UK PURE-EV SALES ON THE UP DESPITE OVERALL MARKET DECLINE "Sales of pure-electric vehicles continued to rise in April 2019, despite the UK car market as a whole down 4% on the previous year. Pure-EVs were up more than 63%, with 1,517 registrations in April" reports NextGreenCar today: "The downward trend for PHEV registrations has been going on since the start of 2019 - barring a slight lift in February. With the effective removal of the Plug-in Car Grant for PHEVs from October 2018, it looks as though the support may have been withdrawn too soon for the market. Although hoped that the PHEV market was performing strongly and capable of standing up despite the withdrawal of the grant, a combination of an uncertain UK car market in general, plus no company car BIK rates beyond the next financial year, look to have made the sector a little shaky." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8657/uk-pureev-sales-on-the-up-despite-overall-market-decline/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. [Originally to be titled “Marijuana: I Was Wrong”, but looking back I was suitably careful about everything, and my reward is not having to say that.] Five years ago, I reviewed the potential costs and benefits of marijuana legalization and concluded that there wasn’t enough evidence for a firm conclusion. I found that using some made-up math, the effects looked slightly positive, but this was very sensitive to small changes in how made-up the math was. The only really interesting conclusion was that most of the objective costs or benefits of legalization came from road traffic accidents. Either stoned driving would increase such accidents, killing thousands. Or people using marijuana instead of alcohol would decrease those accidents, saving thousands. I concluded: We should probably stop [emphasizing direct] health effects of marijuana and imprisonment for marijuana-related offenses, and concentrate all of our research and political energy on how marijuana affects driving. Using the best evidence available at the time, I predicted that marijuana legalization would probably decrease road traffic accidents. Now several states have legalized marijuana, data are in, and we have some preliminary evidence on how marijuana affects driving. And I was wrong. A study by the Highway Loss Data Institute in June of last year finds that states that legalized marijuana saw insurance claims for auto accidents increase about 3% over the general national trend for the time. An updated study by the same group finds 6% according to insurance claims, and 5.2% according to police reports.
Mostly sunny with high temperatures in the mid-50s. LEGALIZING MARIJUANA COULD BRING HIGHER CAR INSURANCE RATES In his campaign for governor, Phil Murphy pledged to legalize marijuana in New Jersey. If the governor-elect succeeds in that effort, New Jersey drivers can expect to see their car insurance rates rise, Bob Jordan reports for the Asbury Park Press. The Highway Loss Data Institute, a nonprofit research organization financed by auto insurers, says that after marijuana was legalized in Colorado, Oregon and Washington, collision claims rose about 3 percent higher than would have been expected without legalized pot. Meanwhile, Lodi officials are trying to prepare for new statewide laws on marijuana by reviewing borough ordinances on smoke shops, Sara Jerde writes for NJ.com. NEW MARKERS TELL OF CAMDEN’S TIES TO SLAVERY From 1727 to the mid-1760s, more than 800 slaves were sold at auction in Camden. On Monday, the city acknowledged that history with the unveiling of a historical marker in Johnson Park near the site of the first documented slave auction in the city, Avalon R. Zoppo writes for Philly.com. Two more markers will be added in the spring. MENENDEZ SAYS HIS BETRAYERS ‘KNOW WHO THEY ARE' After a jury was unable to reach a verdict in his federal corruption trial, Sen. Bob Menendez said he would not forget the people who were "digging my political grave so they could jump in my seat." When Herb Jackson of The Record questioned the Democratic senator on Monday, Menendez declined to give up the names of the people he believes betrayed him, saying: "I said for those who were digging my political grave, I know who they are, and I won’t forget." But Rep. Albio Sires (D-West New York), an ally of Menendez, identified two people he says are on the list. CAR THEFTS SURGING IN BERGEN COUNTY, PROSECUTOR SAYS Car thefts are on the rise in Bergen County, causing Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal to remind residents to lock their cars, take their keys and keep valuables out of sight. Joshua Jongsma reports for The Record reports that in the past month, 30 thefts have been reported in 19 different Bergen municipalities, the prosecutor’s office says. In two instances, multiple vehicles were taken from the same home. JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE TO GO BACK TO THE SHORE ...
