Staying up on the latest evidence in neuro rehab? This interview is for you!  Erin Gallardo, PT, DPT, NCS interviewed Dr. Timothy Faw, a neuroscientist and physical therapist about his research path - where he's been and where it's going. Tim discusses the work his labs have done in a few areas including the plasticity of gray matter and myelin and the implications on motor learning and movement in spinal cord injury. He also discusses tactics on eccentric gait training - that are basically the opposite of what we think of as high intensity - and how they are impacting outcomes. More recently his work has led him to study genetic factors in neurologic recovery including the markers for better or worse outcomes and drug trials. And to ensure listeners leave the conversation with action items, he'll provide his takeaways and clinical pearls that you can start incorporating immediately. Tim emphasizes that rehabilitation is about more than just intensity—it's about creating meaningful, challenging, and novel movement experiences that engage the brain's adaptive capabilities. Clinicians and students interested in cutting-edge neuro rehab approaches can contact Dr. Faw at tfaw@som.umaryland.edu for more information. Just over a million new vehicles were sold in Africa last year, a relatively small number given the continent's enormous population, estimated at 1.5 billion. Chinese auto brands are looking at that discrepancy and think it provides a unique opportunity for rapid expansion, particularly in the budding electric vehicle market. BAIC Motors, BYD, Xpeng, and Neta are among a growing number of Chinese auto majors that have scaled up sales and manufacturing in Africa. But selling EVs in Africa is not going to be easy. In many countries, access to reliable electricity is a problem. Then there's the issue of charging stations and the high import taxes many governments impose on foreign-made cars. Even amid those challenges, Alex Mwanzo, general manager of Equator Mobile — a unit of the investment holding company Maris Africa — is optimistic about the prospects for Chinese EVs. Alex joins Eric & Njenga from Nairobi to explain why Chinese auto brands are well-positioned in the African market. EA - I bet Greg Colbourn 10 k€ that AI will not kill us all by the end of 2027 by Vasco Grilo

The Nonlinear Library

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2024 5:47

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: I bet Greg Colbourn 10 k€ that AI will not kill us all by the end of 2027, published by Vasco Grilo on June 4, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Agreement 78 % of my donations so far have gone to the Long-Term Future Fund[1] (LTFF), which mainly supports AI safety interventions. However, I have become increasingly sceptical about the value of existential risk mitigation, and currently think the best interventions are in the area of animal welfare[2]. As a result, I realised it made sense for me to arrange a bet with someone very worried about AI in order to increase my donations to animal welfare interventions. Gregory Colbourn (Greg) was the 1st person I thought of. He said: I think AGI [artificial general intelligence] is 0-5 years away and p(doom|AGI) is ~90% I doubt doom in the sense of human extinction is anywhere as likely as suggested by the above. I guess the annual extinction risk over the next 10 years is 10^-7, so I proposed a bet to Greg similar to the end-of-the-world bet between Bryan Caplan and Eliezer Yudkowsky. Meanwhile, I transferred 10 k€ to PauseAI[3], which is supported by Greg, and he agreed to the following. If Greg or any of his heirs are still alive by the end of 2027, they transfer to me or an organisation of my choice 20 k€ times the ratio between the consumer price index for all urban consumers and items in the United States, as reported by the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED), in December 2027 and April 2024. I expect inflation in this period, i.e. a ratio higher than 1. Some more details: The transfer must be made in January 2028. I will decide in December 2027 whether the transfer should go to me or an organisation of choice. My current preference is for it to go directly to an organisation, such that 10 % of it is not lost in taxes. If for some reason I am not able to decide (e.g. if I die before 2028), the transfer must be made to my lastly stated organisation of choice, currently The Humane League (THL). As Founders Pledge's Patient Philanthropy Fund, I have my investments in Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF USD Acc. This is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) tracking global stocks, which have provided annual real returns of 5.0 % since 1900. In addition, Lewis Bollard expects the marginal cost-effectiveness of Open Philanthropy's (OP's) farmed animal welfare grantmaking "will only decrease slightly, if at all, through January 2028"[4], so I suppose I do not have to worry much about donating less over the period of the bet of 3.67 years (= 2028 + 1/12 - (2024 + 5/12)). Consequently, I think my bet is worth it if its benefit-to-cost ratio is higher than 1.20 (= (1 + 0.050)^3.67). It would be 2 (= 20*10^3/(10*10^3)) if the transfer to me or an organisation of my choice was fully made, and Person X fulfils the agreement, so I need 60 % (= 1.20/2) of the transfer to be made and agreement with Person X to be fulfilled. I expect this to be the case based on what I know about Greg and Person X, and information Greg shared, so I went ahead with the bet. Here are my and Greg's informal signatures: Me: Vasco Henrique Amaral Grilo. Greg: Gregory Hamish Colbourn. Impact I expect 90 % of the potential benefits of the bet to be realised. So I believe the bet will lead to additional donations of 8 k€ (= (0.9*20 - 10)*10^3). Saulius estimated corporate campaigns for chicken welfare improve 41 chicken-years per $, and OP thinks "the marginal FAW [farmed animal welfare] funding opportunity is ~1/5th as cost-effective as the average from Saulius' analysis", which means my donations will affect 8.20 chicken-years per $ (= 41/5). Therefore I expect my bet to improve 65.6 k chicken-years (= 8*10^3*8.20). I also estimate corporate campaigns for chicken welfare have a cost-effectiveness of 14.3 DALY/$[5]. So I expect the benefits of the bet to be equiv...

This is: EA Survey: Cause Prioritization, published by Jamie Elsey on May 15, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary In this post we report findings from the 2022 EA Survey (EAS 2022) and the 2023 Supplemental EA Survey (EAS Supplement 2023)[1], covering: Ratings of different causes, as included in previous EA Surveys (EAS 2022) New questions about ideas related to cause prioritization (EAS 2022) A new question about what share of resources respondents believe should be allocated to each cause (EAS Supplement 2023) New questions about whether people would have gotten involved in EA, had EA supported different causes (EAS Supplement 2023) Overall cause prioritization Global Poverty and AI Risk were the highest-rated causes, closely followed by Biosecurity Ratings of AI Risk, Biosecurity, Nuclear Security, and Animal Welfare have all increased in recent years Prioritizing longtermist over neartermist causes was predicted by higher levels of engagement, male gender, white ethnicity, and younger age (when accounting for the influence of these and several other variables in the same model). 63% of respondents gave their highest rating to a longtermist cause, while 47% gave a neartermist cause their highest rating (the total exceeds 100% because 26% of respondents gave their highest ratings to both a longtermist cause and a neartermist cause). Splitting these out, we see 38% gave only a longtermist cause their highest rating, 21% a neartermist cause only, 26% both, and 16% neither a near- nor longtermist cause (e.g., Animal Welfare). This suggests that although almost twice as many respondents prioritize a longtermist cause as prioritize a neartermist cause, there is considerable overlap. Philosophical ideas related to cause prioritization "I'm comfortable supporting low-probability, high-impact interventions": 66% of respondents agreed, 19% disagreed. "It is more than 10% likely that ants have valenced experience (e.g., pain)": 56% of respondents agreed, 17% disagreed "The impact of our actions on the very long-term future is the most important consideration when it comes to doing good": 46% of respondents agreed, 37% disagreed "I endorse being roughly risk-neutral, even if it increases the odds that I have no impact at all." 37% of respondents agreed, 41% disagreed "Most expected value in the future comes from digital minds' experiences, or the experiences of other nonbiological entities." 27% of respondents agreed, 43% disagreed "The EA community should defer to mainstream experts on most topics, rather than embrace contrarian views." 23% of respondents agreed, 46% disagreed The following statements were quite strongly associated with each other and predicted support for longtermist causes over neartermist ones quite well: "Long-term future", "Low probability high impact", "Risk neutral", and "Digital minds" Allocation of resources to causes On average, respondents allocated the following shares to each cause: Global Health and Development (29.7%), AI Risks (23.2%), Farm Animal Welfare (FAW) (18.7%), Other x-risks (16.0%), Wild Animal Welfare (5.1%), and Other causes (7.3%). Results did not dramatically differ looking only at highly engaged respondents. Compared to actual allocations estimed in 2019, the average of the survey allocations are lower for GHD, higher for AI / x-risk overall and higher for animal welfare, but compared to 2019 Leaders' Forum allocations, the survey assigns larger shares to GHD and to FAW and less to AI and x-risk. Causes and getting involved in EA Respondents were strongly inclined to report that "the key philosophical ideas and principles of EA in the abstract" were more important than "Specific causes that EA focuses on" However, results were much more mixed when asked whether they would still have gotten involved in EA if the community was n...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Day in the Life: Abhi Kumar, published by Open Philanthropy on April 19, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Open Philanthropy's "Day in the Life" series showcases the wide-ranging work of our staff, spotlighting individual team members as they navigate a typical workday. We hope these posts provide an inside look into what working at Open Phil is really like. If you're interested in joining our team, we encourage you to check out our open roles. Abhi Kumar is a Program Associate on the Farm Animal Welfare team. He works on investigating the most promising opportunities to reduce the suffering of farm animals, with a focus on the development and commercialization of alternatives to animal products. Previously, he worked on the investment teams at the venture capital funds Lever VC and Ahimsa VC. He has an MMS from the Yale School of Management & HEC Paris, and a BSocSc from Singapore Management University. Fun fact: Abhi has completed six marathons and an Ironman. Day in the Life I work on the Farm Animal Welfare team, also known internally as the "FAW" team. Our mission is to improve the lives of animals that are unlucky enough to be confined in factory farms. We do this by making grants to organizations and individuals whose work we think will most effectively improve living conditions for these animals. My primary responsibility on the team is to make grants in my area of expertise: alternatives to animal products, including plant-based meats and cellular agriculture. Grants are typically focused on accelerating these alternatives through collaboration with governments, companies, and academia. For instance, we recently made a grant to Dansk Vegetarisk Forening to advocate for increased R&D funding for alternative (alt) protein in Denmark. Lately, my mornings have started with calls with colleagues or potential grantees in Asia. I'm currently investigating a few potential grants to advance alt protein in Japan, so I spend my morning talking to experts on Japanese climate policy and reading through Japanese policy documents like the Green Food System Strategy. Japan is a promising country to expand alt protein efforts within because it's an R&D powerhouse that is also showing more interest in alt protein innovation. After my morning calls, I reflect on potential grant recommendations for our leadership and identify what the key questions (or "cruxes") are for me. Then, I note the topic as an agenda item for discussion with my manager Lewis, who supervises the FAW team. In the early afternoon, I have a check-in call with a current grantee. During these calls, we discuss what's been going well and what hasn't, as well as resolve any questions the grantee has. For instance, this grantee says they'd like to better understand our alt protein strategy, so I summarize the outcomes we're looking for with our grantmaking: more government funding, increased industry engagement, and more high-impact academic research. After these calls, I type up my call notes into a ~five-line summary that I'll share with my manager later. After that, I head down to my neighborhood café to focus on three writing tasks: First, I finish a memo on why we should fund a lab researching how to improve animal fat alternatives. My manager left a bunch of questions on my last draft, so I address his questions and re-share it with him for discussion later. Second, I write a grant approval email (what Open Phil staff know as the "handoff") to a successful grantee and connect them with our Grants team, who handle all of the legal and logistical challenges involved with actually disbursing money. Without our wonderful Grants team, figuring out how to transfer funds to grantees would be pretty painful - I'm grateful for their expertise! Lastly, I send a rejection email to a potential grantee I've been i...

fWotD Episode 2516: 1876 Scotland v Wales football match Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Monday, 25 March 2024 is 1876 Scotland v Wales football match. The 1876 association football match between the national teams representing Scotland and Wales was the first game played by the latter side. It took place on 25 March 1876 at Hamilton Crescent, Partick, the home ground of the West of Scotland Cricket Club. The match was also the first time that Scotland had played against a side other than England. The fixture was organised by Llewelyn Kenrick, who had founded the Football Association of Wales (FAW) only a few weeks earlier in response to a letter published in The Field. Advertisements were placed in several sporting journals for Welsh players, or those with more than three years residence in the country, to come forward and the Welsh team was selected after trial matches were held at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham. The FAW selected the side and Kenrick was appointed captain for the fixture. As the more experienced team, Scotland dominated the match and had several chances to score in the first half. They had a goal disallowed after scoring directly from a corner kick, before taking the lead after 40 minutes through John Ferguson. In the early stages of the second half, Wales attempted to play more openly to find a goal, but the Scottish side took advantage of their opponent's inexperience and scored two further goals. The first was a rebound off the goalpost which was converted by Billy MacKinnon; the second was headed in by debutant James Lang. Scotland added a fourth through Henry McNeil and claimed a victory in front of a crowd of around 17,000 people, a record for an international fixture at the time. The two nations have met frequently since this first match, playing against each other every year in friendly matches until 1884 when the British Home Championship was introduced. The competition was an annual tournament, and Scotland and Wales played a fixture against each other every year until 1984, apart from when competitive football was suspended during the First and Second World Wars. In total, the two sides have played more than 100 matches against each other since the first meeting. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:08 UTC on Monday, 25 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 1876 Scotland v Wales football match on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Geraint Standard.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Social science research on animal welfare we'd like to see, published by Martin Gould on January 12, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Context and objectives This is a list of social science research topics related to animal welfare, developed by researchers on the Open Phil farm animal welfare team. We compiled this list because people often ask us for suggestions on topics that would be valuable to research. The primary audience for this document is students (undergrad, grad, high school) and researchers without significant budgets (since the topics we list here could potentially be answered using primarily desktop research).[1] Additional context: We are not offering to fund research on these topics, and we are not necessarily offering to review or advise research on these topics. In the interest of brevity, we have not provided much context for each topic. But if you are a PhD student or academic, we may be able to provide you with more detail on our motivation and our interpretation of the current literature: please email Martin Gould with your questions. The topics covered in this document are the ones we find most interesting; for other animal advocacy topic lists see here. Note that we do not attempt to cover animal welfare science in these topics, and that the topics are listed in no particular order (i.e. we don't place a higher priority on the topics listed first). In some areas, we are not fully up to date on the existing literature, so some of our questions may have been answered by research already conducted. We think it is generally valuable to use back-of-the-envelope-calculations to explore ideas and findings. If you complete research on these topics, please feel free to share it with us (email below) and with the broader animal advocacy movement (one option is to post here). We're happy to see published findings, working papers, and even detailed notes that you don't intend to formally publish. If you have anything to share or any feedback, please email Martin Gould. This post is also on the Open Phil blog here. Topics Corporate commitments By how many years do animal welfare corporate commitments speed up reforms that might eventually happen anyway due to factors like government policy, individual consumer choices, or broad moral change? How does this differ by the type of reform? (For example, cage-free vs. Better Chicken Commitment?) How does this differ by country or geographical region (For example, the EU vs. Brazil?) What are the production costs associated with specific animal welfare reforms? Here is an example of such an analysis for the European Chicken Commitment. Policy reform What are the jurisdictions most amenable to FAW policy reform over the next 5-10 years? What specific reform(s) are most tractable, and why? To what extent is animal welfare an issue that is politically polarizing (i.e. clearly associated with a particular political affiliation)? Is this a barrier to reform? If so, how might political polarization of animal welfare be reduced? How do corporate campaigns and policy reform interact with and potentially reinforce each other? What conclusions should be drawn about the optimal timing of policy reform campaigns? What would be the cost-effectiveness of a global animal welfare benchmarking project? (That is, comparing farm animal welfare by country and by company, as a basis to drive competition, as with similar models in human rights and global development.) Which international institutions (e.g. World Bank, WTO, IMF, World Organisation for Animal Health, UN agencies) have the most influence over animal welfare policy in emerging economies? What are the most promising ways to influence these institutions? Does this vary by geographical region (for example, Asia vs. Latin America)? Alt protein What % of PBMA (plant-ba...

"You have to get into the core of what the issue is. The most crucial point is how you respond and the amount and timing of your response." The main talking point is the inclusion of Bristol City youngster Joe Low as well as a few "regular" names missing out in the shape of Levitt, Sorba and Burns. Finally, we discuss how great it is to see Dai Brooks name back in a Welsh squad. We talk a bit about Tom Lockyer and other players who have been promoted or relegated, including Ethan Ampadu. His Spezia side play only the 5th ever Serie A relegation playoff on Sunday. We conclude by discussing the FAW's application and appeals process for promotion and relegation, the posibility of blue cards and sin bins for dissent, Cheryl Foster refereeing a huge womens European game plus the U17's experience in Hungary.

It's a plan that has been floated for years, but has seen slow progress as of late. A road and railway network, running from southeastern Turkiye, through Iraq, all the way to Basra on the Gulf. Although languishing for years in the planning phase, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave the project a new jolt, referencing it during a press conference last week with Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. Dubbed the Development Road Project, the railway and road network will begin at Ovakoy on the Turkish-Iraqi border, and head south. It will pass all of Iraq's major cities including Mosul, its capital Baghdad, before finally arriving in Basra and the al Faw port on the Gulf. Iraq's Prime Minister said he had constructive talks with President Erdogan, especially when it came to the economy. The two countries saw a record trade year in 2022, hitting 24 billion dollars. President Erdogan also said that Turkiye would be releasing more water from the Tigris River, to help alleviate water shortages in Iraq, which lies downstream. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Healthier Hens Y1 update including challenges so far and a call for funding, published by lukasj10 on October 18, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Key points Our mission and approach remain largely unchanged Our organizational capacity is growing We spent most of our Y1 budget on staff, research and travel We have made slight, pilot country-informed adjustments to our strategy We will ramp up our program work in Y2 We are finding it rather difficult to fundraise, Y2 budget ($230k) is still not fully covered Healthier Hens (HH) received funding from Charity Entrepreneurship, EA Funds and individual donors until now. We need more funding to keep investigating promising dietary interventions to improve the welfare of cage-free hens and engaging cage-free egg farming stakeholders to adopt these interventions. You can donate here. Our mission and approach Our mission remains to improve the welfare of egg-laying hens kept commercially cage-free. To achieve that, we are investigating promising dietary interventions to reduce the incidence of bone health issues to mitigate hen pain and suffering and engaging cage-free egg farming stakeholders (including farmers, feed mills and regulators) to implement these interventions. Please read our introductory and 6M update posts to learn more about the background of HH. Capacity, staff and organizational growth We used Y1 to grow in capacity. The corresponding activities involved setting up an advisory board – including African farmed animal welfare (FAW) movement, animal welfare and keel bone damage experts – joining an international FAW association focused on egg-laying hen welfare, visiting egg farms and feed producers in Kenya, and running initial animal welfare workshops. This has permitted us to be well aware of ongoing cage-free campaigns and existing hen welfare interventions, learn what practical obstacles the industry faces, and what knowledge/capacity gaps must be addressed to facilitate our program work in improving hen welfare. After choosing our pilot country of operations, our main task was to hire a full-time Country Manager to facilitate our efforts on the ground. Our team has also seen two Research Interns joining our efforts to build knowledge capacity on how hen nutrition relates to welfare issues we are seeing on farms. Looking forward, we will recruit Data Collection and Operation Interns in Kenya, remote Research Interns and a hen welfare/nutrition specialist during Y2, which should bring the total of paid HH staff up to 8. We had a total operational budget of $159k for Y1. Its break-down can be seen below. The majority of our funds were used for Co-founder and staff salaries, research (feed trial in Switzerland) and travel expenses (mainly related to, initially, country scoping and on-the-ground Kenya activities). Y2 will see more of our budget accounting for non Co-founder staff expenses and program expenses. The total estimated Y2 budget is currently at $230k, with $50k raised so far. Strategic updates Our country selection process took a significant part of Y1 to carry out (read more about it here). We are building up knowledge and networks within the local cage-free egg production and feed manufacturing industries via co-founder country visits and the work led by our Country Manager. The need to build reputation and establish actively connected networks within the different communities became apparent as a necessity to initiate pilot work. This is why we are ramping up the farmer training portion of our work while the other research activities are ongoing. The workshops enable us to achieve the following goals in our target counties: Gauge farmer welfare awareness and identify gaps crucial for ensuring hen bone development, health and integrity. Build relationships with the county level Veterinary Dir...

The county has announced a series of six poll worker hiring events which will be held at Gwinnett #library branches. The first hiring event will be held from 3 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Lawrenceville Branch Library. Anyone interested in serving as a poll worker must be a U.S. citizen who is at least 16-years-old and capable of reading, writing and speaking English. County officials said candidates must also be a Gwinnett County resident or a Gwinnett County government employee. They will also be required to have access to a computer so they can complete required online training. A list of remaining poll worker events can be found on Gwinnett Daily Post dot Com.               .           STORY 2:#SPLC Parents, activists and attorneys from the #SouthernPovertyLawCenter say they will be carefully watching #GwinnettCountyPublicSchools to see if recently announced changes to the way the district handles discipline brings actual change. #GCPS officials highlighted changes they are making to the district's tribunal process, including more oversight on when a tribunal can be called and limiting the offenses that can be sent to a tribunal, during a presentation to the county's school board on Aug. 18. Longtime critics of the way GCPS has handled discipline, including an overrepresentation of minority students among the students who disciplined, say the changes are a start, but they still have some doubts. “Like many Gwinnett County parents and community activists, we are cautiously optimistic about these changes,” Southern Poverty Law Center senior staff attorney Claire Sherburne said. During the Aug. 18 presentation, GCPS leaders revealed a data point that showed GCPS tribunals sent more students to alternative schools in 2018 and 2019 than the school systems for Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton counties, as well as the city of Atlanta, combined. That prompted shock from several board members. Claire said the data didn't reveal anything that surprised people who have been critical for years of the way GCPS handled discipline, however. The question for longtime critics of GCPS' approach to discipline is whether the district will actually implement a substantive change to how students are disciplined. The school board has been making changes to policies dealing with student behavior and discipline, and the district's Blueprint For the Future strategic plan outlines several changes to the way student discipline will be handled. There are also the changes to the tribunals. Principals will have to run plans to send a student to a tribunal up through higher ups in the district's administration for approval. District officials said earlier this month that students will also be allowed to have representatives of groups such as the NAACP or the Southern Poverty Law Center serve as advocates for them during tribunals.                           STORY 3:Central   #CentralGwinnett's football team improved to 2-0 under new head coach Larry Harold with a 20-13 victory at Apalachee on Friday. The #BlackKnights fell behind 7-0 early, but rebounded for a 14-7 halftime lead on an Xavier Tates touchdown pass from Ronald Lindsey and a TD run from Carmello Jeffrey. After Apalachee got within 14-13 in the third quarter, Makhi Cunningham's TD run stretched the Central lead back out. Carmello led the Black Knights, rushing 23 times for 140 yards. Makhi was 3 of 6 passing for 64 yards, and Craig Killings was 4 of 5 passing for 56 yards.             STORY 4: Senior Center Residents of one Lawrenceville senior living community are about to see a big change in the place they call home. Laurel Grove, which is a Holiday by Atria independent living community, is undergoing a $2 million facelift that will include renovations to the dining room, atrium and apartments and a new fitness room, library, game room and salon. Atria officials expect to complete the renovations this fall. As part of the renovation, apartments will get new lighting; luxury vinyl tile flooring; kitchenette that have new cabinets, sinks and granite counters; and bathroom upgrades such as new vanities, faucets and accessories. common areas will get improvements for functionality and audiovisual capabilities. A community Room has been included in the property for community gatherings. There will also be exterior enhancements. Holiday Laurel Grove is one of 200 senior living community that operates under the Holiday by Atria brand name. Atria is is undertaking a multi-year, multi-million effort to invest in its properties.             Commercial Commercial Commercial               Story 5: Softball   Defending Class AAAAAAA state softball champion #NorthGwinnett won the #FAN (#FemaleAthletesNetwork) Tournament, which concluded Saturday in #FortCollins, Colorado. North defeated #Colorado schools #ValorChristian of 7-4, #CentralGrandJunction 10-0 and #FossilRidge 13-0 before a 3-0 victory in the finals over #Legend, Colorado's Number 1-ranked team. Amber Reed and Bella Faw had monster tournaments at the plate. Reed was 11-for-13 with two home runs and five doubles, and Faw was 12-for-15 with a home run and four doubles. Victoria Na was the winning pitcher in the #Bulldogs' first three games, striking out 35 and allowing no hits and one walk in 15 innings. Morgan Sullivan was the winning pitcher in the championship game, scattering four hits in five innings.       Story 6: COVID   Gwinnett County officials have extended the deadline by which local nonprofits have to apply for #Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery funds. The county announced on Friday that the application deadline will now be September 9th. Gwinnett county government and the United Way of Greater Atlanta will be allocating $4.25 million in funds that was provided to the county by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The funding was made available through the American Rescue Plan Act and must be used to address issues that either emerged or were made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic snd its economic fallout. Nonprofit organizations should go to the United Way's Grant Portal to apply for funding. Dacula Elementary has a case of Monkeypox And We'll get an update on the Gwinnett Stripers with Dave Lezotte.   We'll have all this and more on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast.    Commercial Story 1:Cows A jury convicted Buford resident Ron Throgmartin and an Illinois resident in federal court on Friday for his role in an Ponzi scheme where victims were fraudulently encouraged to invest in cattle and marijuana. Ron and Galesburg, Illinois resident Reva Joyce Stachniw were each convicted on five counts of wire fraud and one count each of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The pair will be sentenced on January 6th, but they face up to 20 years in prison on each wire fraud charge and the conspiracy to commit wire fraud charge, and 10 years in prison for the conspiracy to commit money laundering charge. Federal prosecutors said the pair ran the Ponzi scheme from 2017 until 2019 where they fraudulently told victims that their investments would be backed by short-term investments in cattle. They also used false and fraudulent pretenses to solicit money from victim-investors for the conspirators' Colorado-based marijuana business, Universal Herbs LLC. Other victim-investors gave the conspirators money based on false promises that investment money would be used for legitimate business activities related to cattle or marijuana, without having the investment money linked to specific investment opportunities.                 .           STORY 2:Monkeypox Gwinnett County Public Schools officials confirmed on Monday that a case of monkeypox has emerged at Dacula Elementary School. A letter went out to parents on Friday to inform them that an individual at the school tested positive for the monkeypox virus. GCPS officials said they could not release information about the person's gender or age because of federal HIPAA and FERPA laws, but a GNR Public Health spokesman said it was an adult. In addition to the letter sent to all Dacula Elementary parents, school officials said they will contact parents of children who have been in close contact with the individual through separate, additional communication. School system officials pointed to health information that monkeypox is spread by being in close, direct skin-to-skin contact with someone who has it. The CDC says symptoms of monkeypox show up within three weeks of when the person was exposed to the virus, and it can last between two and four weeks. Symptoms can include: fever; chills; swollen lymph nodes; exhaustion; muscle aches and backache; headache; and respiratory symptoms, such as sore throat, nasal congestion or cough. Exposure includes direct contact with a monkeypox rash, scabs or fluids from a scab, although it can be picked up by touching objects, surfaces or fabrics — such as clothing, bedding or towels — that someone who has monkeypox has touched. If you believe your student has monkeypox, please notify our school nurse and your child's primary care physician. If your student is ill, please keep them at home until they are well and can return to school in accordance with GCPS's standard illness policy.                           STORY 3:PBR   PBR officials announced that its professional bull riders tour will return to Gwinnett County's Gas South Arena in January. The Gwinnett Invitational will be held January 21st and 22nd.  "For two nights only, 35 of the best bull riders in the world will go head-to-head against the sport's rankest bovine athletes, showcasing the ultimate showdown of man vs. beast in one of the most exciting live sporting events to witness," a statement from PBR said. The college's total enrollment – new, returning and transfer students – is trending up a percentage point from last fall. Michael Poll, GGC's vice president of Enrollment Management Services, said that the college is working to reverse the enrollment declines caused by the global pandemic. He said GGC's outreach to high school campuses has been crucial in the college's recruitment efforts. Unique programs such as instant decision days, as well as services such as transcript pick up, counseling appointments and college workshops have been well received by high school seniors. Although student enrollment numbers in the initial few weeks of the semester are typically fluid and subject to change, Michael said all signs point to a robust fall enrollment. These numbers will be verified later this fall by the University System of Georgia. Other notable gains include: New international students more than doubled over last year with an increase in students from South Korea, Vietnam and India. New transfer student enrollment increased 33% over last fall. New freshmen increased 14% over last fall. Registered Hispanic students now stand at 27%, up a percentage point from last year. With increases in enrollment come increases in students seeking the “full campus experience.” Toward that end, students living in campus housing increased 16% from last year.               Commercial Commercial Commercial               Story 5: Fraud State officials have filed charges against a Lawrenceville man for allegedly filing fraudulent property loss claims that items purchased from Apple Inc. and Micro Center. Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King said Kyle Marler  , filed the property loss claim with Homesite Insurance on September 9th, 2021, and then made personal property changes to his claim two days later in an attempt to get the insurance company to pay out $6,298. The problem was that records from Apple and Micro Center showed Kyle did not own the items listed in the claim, according to state officials. Kyle faces two counts each of insurance fraud and forgery. Warrants for his arrest were taken out last Wednesday, but he had not yet been taken into custody as of Monday.       Story 6: Missing Kid   The Gwinnett Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a missing 16-year-old who was last seen more than a month ago. Police said Susana Morales was last seen by her mother on July 26. Officials said detectives have exhausted all leads in this case and are asking for anyone with information to come forward. Detectives said they do not believe Susana is in any specific danger, and it is not believed that she is being held against her will. According to a GoFundMe posted by her sister, Susana had been walking home from a friend's house but never made it home. Since that time, no one has heard from or seen Susana. Police are asking anyone who has information about this case to contact GCPD detectives. To remain anonymous, tipsters should contact Crime Stoppers. Crime Stoppers tipsters can receive a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.     And now, community reporter Matt Goldin sits down with Dave Lezotte to get an update on the Gwinnett Stripers                       Commercial Commercial Commercial Thanks again for listening to today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. What's it all about? Wireless charging!! We accept this as obvious for our smart phones, but less so for cars and vehicles of all types, but it was a flat phone battery that inspired the technology behind wireless charging leader Wi-Tricity. I speak with CEO Alex Gruzen about the technology, applications, and how close we are to simply driving over a charge pad, walking away, and coming back to a full battery. It's far closer than you may think. About Alex Gruzen:  Alex Gruzen is the CEO of WiTricity, the industry pioneer in wireless power transfer over distance and founder of electric vehicle wireless charging technology.  Before WiTricity, Gruzen co-founded Texas-based Corsa Ventures, where he focused on building leading technology companies via early-stage investments. Prior to Corsa, he was the Senior Vice President of the Consumer and Small Medium Business Product Group at Dell, and previously led the company's global notebook computer business. His experience spans product development, global sales and marketing, operations and growth through mergers and acquisitions, having also held leadership roles at Hewlett Packard, Compaq and Sony. Gruzen holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a S.M. and S.B. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). About Witricity: WiTricity is the global industry leader in wireless charging, powering a sustainable future of mobility that is electric and autonomous. WiTricity's patented magnetic resonance technology is being incorporated into global automakers' and Tier 1 suppliers' EV roadmaps and is the foundation of major global standards developed to support wide-scale adoption. Advancements like dynamic charging of moving vehicles, and the charging of autonomous robots and vehicles without human intervention all depend on WiTricity technology The WiTricity Halo™ upgrade for electric vehicles will deliver 11 kW wireless charging, enabling a charge rate that provides up to 35-40 miles of driving range per hour of charging time, a speed and efficiency on par with today's Level 2 AC plug-in chargers. WiTricity's wireless EV charging technology has made it possible to charge the Genesis GV60 without a plug by simply parking and charging over the charging pad. FAW showcased its HongQi E-HS9 parking and charging autonomously built on WiTricity's magnetic resonance wireless charging.
