The Space Show Presents Guy Schumann, CEO of RSS-Hydro, Tuesday 1-13-26Quick summaryThis program focused on discussing Guy Schumann's transition from academia to founding RSS-Hydro, a company specializing in disaster response and monitoring services using space technology. The discussion covered RSS-Hydro's capabilities in fire and flood monitoring, their business model flexibility, and Guy's academic background in hydrology. The conversation concluded with discussions about the regulatory environment in Luxembourg, the company's future plans including potential AI integration and expansion into new markets, and the broader implications of space technology for disaster management and public awareness.Detailed summaryOur guest, Guy Schumann, discussed his company RSS-Hydro, which provides disaster response and monitoring services using space technology. He explained that while the company is known for flood monitoring, they also offer fire monitoring services due to the ease of detecting fires and heat from space. Guy emphasized that RSS-Hydro is not primarily focused on prevention, but rather on providing rapid insights and assistance during disasters. He also described the company's flexible business model, which allows for both subscription-based and on-demand services, particularly for governments and municipalities with limited budgets.Guy discussed his academic background, transitioning from a professorship at Bristol University to post-doctoral positions at Caltech, JPL, and UCLA, where he was hosted by JPL. He shared his experience working on research projects related to hydrology, focusing on floods, rainstorms, and drought systems. Guy explained how he moved into the private sector in the US, collaborating with companies like Remote Sensing Solutions and Tomorrow.I/O. He mentioned starting his own company, RSS-Hydro in Luxembourg, during the COVID-19 pandemic, while maintaining connections with US research projects through ImageCat. Guy acknowledged the challenges of transitioning from academia to entrepreneurship, noting his lack of business experience compared to his expertise in hydrology.Guy discussed his experience with California's severe drought during his 7-year residence there, highlighting the challenges of managing water resources in the face of climate variability. He explained that his company focuses on providing rapid response and first insights during disasters, using space-born data to offer affordable and comprehensive flood mapping and fire monitoring services globally.Guy explained that fires are easier to monitor from space compared to flooding, and described their data sources, which include public missions from NASA and ESA, as well as partnerships with private satellite operators. He mentioned owning an in-space computer with sensors and the ability to process data from other satellites. Guy also discussed their collaboration with tech companies like Nvidia, Google, and Microsoft to improve data visualization and forecasting tools. David inquired about the future of forecasting and preventing disasters, to which Guy responded that they are developing and refining forecasting models, aiming to commercialize them for easier interpretation of complex data. David concluded by asking about the regulatory environment for private space businesses in Luxembourg, to which Guy did not provide a direct answer.Guy was asked to discuss the business environment in Luxembourg, noting its regulatory challenges compared to the US but highlighting its favorable taxation and government support for space industry startups through accelerator programs. He mentioned that Luxembourg's space agency focuses on business and economic returns rather than research, making it easier for startups to enter the space industry. Guy also explained that Luxembourg has space-based solutions for monitoring soil moisture and predicting floods, with applications like Hydrosense that incorporate rainfall, soil parameters, and vegetation changes.Guy further explained that his company can monitor vegetation and soil moisture through satellite data, which is useful for hydrological applications and fire risk assessment. He noted that while they can measure vegetation indices and assess fire fuel availability, they haven't been specifically requested for this purpose by fire monitoring teams. Guy also mentioned they are currently developing a fire spreading mechanism for their applications. David then posed a hypothetical scenario involving Mayor Bass of L.A. and Governor Newsom seeking a comprehensive space-based solution to manage California's fire and drought risks, to which Guy responded that they could develop a multi-step plan incorporating vegetation monitoring, fire risk assessment, and predictive modeling, but would need to work closely with local experts to tailor the solution to specific needs. He also talked about the importance of key consortium building.Guy discussed the challenges of addressing large-scale infrastructure problems in cities, such as stormwater management, and proposed forming a consortium of companies to develop comprehensive solutions. He emphasized the importance of building partnerships with tech companies and leveraging expertise from various sectors. Guy also highlighted the difficulty of securing political support and budget allocation for such projects, noting that maintaining long-term commitment from city officials can be challenging.David and Guy discussed the current state and future of space technology, emphasizing that while the technology is advanced, there is a need to integrate it affordably and collaboratively. Guy highlighted the importance of democratizing space infrastructure and moving away from high-cost, limited-access models to make space data more accessible and useful for everyday insights. David raised concerns about public understanding of space capabilities, noting that many people, including policymakers, lack basic knowledge about space's role in disaster management and environmental monitoring. Guy agreed, explaining that satellites are crucial for weather forecasting and other Earth observations, and their data significantly improve predictive models. Both emphasized the need for better public awareness and political pressure to leverage space technology for broader societal benefits.Guy took us through the RSS-Hydro's current status and potential future as an AI-driven disaster response company. He explained they are not publicly traded but open to private investment, though they prioritize finding the right investors who align with their mission. Guy and David also discussed the role of AI in their operations, with Guy emphasizing its benefits but also the need for expertise when using AI tools. Marshall raised a question about the balance between real and artificial intelligence, which Guy addressed by highlighting both the potential of AI and the importance of human expertise in its application. David concluded by asking about RSS-Hydro's 5- and 10-year plans. Be sure to listen to it and do post comments on the response on our comment blog and systems.Guy discussed the company's growth trajectory, expressing confidence in doubling revenue annually and potentially exploring public offerings in 5-10 years. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the company's mission of rapid disaster response while expanding its impact. David explored the possibility of utilizing the company's assets for lunar imaging and settlement development, to which Guy responded positively, noting their experience with modeling floods on Mars. They also discussed the company's current focus on disaster response and its potential foray into insurance and proactive risk management. Guy highlighted their work with various clients, including cities and NGOs, and mentioned their participation in upcoming events like the Stormwater Show in Anaheim. This summary is available in full at www.thespaceshow.com and doctorspace.substack.com.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223 (Not in service at this time)For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access. The Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. One year after the LA fires and only 13% of homes have rebuilding permits—yet investors are already scooping up 40% of the vacant lots that hit the market. What could go wrong? We dive into the mess that is LA's post-fire reality: homeowners trapped by underinsurance, bureaucratic permitting nightmares that'll stretch into the next decade, and investors circling like vultures while residents desperately try to hold onto their neighborhoods. Meanwhile, Rick Caruso is calling out "Firegate"—alleging the city deliberately altered after-action reports to shield Mayor Bass and the fire department from accountability. Remember when they told us the water reservoirs were full and the hydrants would work? How'd that turn out?Are we really surprised that people are selling when the rebuild timeline is measured in years, not months? Is anyone shocked that the city might be covering up its failures? When you're paying double mortgages, living in rentals, and watching permits move at government speed, selling that $600K lot starts looking pretty good. They don't want you to know how badly this was mismanaged. Should we expect accountability, or just more excuses?Hit that subscribe button and join the conversation. Let's expose what they're trying to hide. Like, share, and let me know your thoughts below!
Welcome to #Firegate, where Los Angeles city leadership tried to scrub their own after-action report to hide their catastrophic failures during the Palisades Fire. The LA Times just exposed deliberate deletions designed to shield Mayor Bass, the fire department, and Governor Newsom from accountability—including removing references to the January 1st fire that crews were ordered to leave smoldering, only to reignite six days later and kill 12 people while destroying thousands of homes. The battalion chief who wrote the original report? He refused to sign the cooked version, calling it "highly unprofessional." Sections titled "failures" got renamed "primary challenges," and language about policy violations just vanished. Mayor Bass was in Ghana while her city prepared to burn, firefighters sat idle for over an hour during the blaze, and now they're forming "crisis management work groups" to minimize liability. Is anyone shocked that California leadership is more interested in covering their tracks than protecting taxpayers? When will voters demand actual accountability instead of political spin? Hit subscribe, smash that like button, and share this with everyone who's tired of government corruption masquerading as transparency.

Tim opens Hour 2 with tales from the return counter—Costco style—and shares wild audio of a customer seriously milking the store's famously generous policy. Then it's back to Tim's war on bad nicknames, as he laments the rise of “Cali” while doubling down on Mayor Bass's beloved “Angelenos.” From there, it's Christmas in July at Hobby Lobby, and Tim shares his surprising depth of tariff knowledge (and deep offense at premature holiday shopping). Later, Tim gets roasted on AM 570's Petros and Money Show for his hot dog steamer purchase and gives one more shoutout to the real star of the night—those finely chopped onions. Finally, he revisits the latest mockery of The Duke of Sports and his misadventures in the Gary and Shannon dating game.
Tim Conway Jr. starts your Monday with a direct plea: LA, curb the crime—we've got major events incoming and tourism on the line! ABC's Alex Stone checks in with details on the FAA's investigation into a terrifying near-miss between a Delta jet and a B-52 bomber. Later, Tim dives into the WNBA All-Star Game controversy, including a lively debate with Bellio about the league's financial woes, and makes a heartfelt request to Mayor Bass—stop calling us "Angelinos!" Plus, retired Special Enforcement Bureau Deputy Johnny Hanson joins to share how you can support the families of fallen Sheriff's Deputies. And Tim wraps the hour by breaking down a massive jewelry store heist—how many thieves are too many when it's time to split the loot?
Sexy Bass Rules over the ‘Angelenos'- Tim Conway Jr. breaks down Mayor Bass's controversial request for Marines to exit LA—and jokingly debates adopting her favorite term "Angelenos" himself, while coining her a new nickname, "Sexy Bass." Then, get ready to be surprised: how many LA World Cup games will actually happen in LA? Tim's got the answer! Plus, he checks out Hollywood's hot new Tesla Diner—open 24 hours with built-in superchargers. Later, Tim considers trading his mic for life as a Shania Twain groupie. And finally, as an Auto Zone is ransacked during yet another LA street takeover, Tim discusses the troubling trend of local businesses packing up for safer grounds.

Join Jim and Greg for this Tuesday 3 Martini Lunch as they examine President Trump's intensifying pressure on Iran, the curious absence of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard from a key national security meeting prior to recent Israeli military action, and what Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass inadvertently revealed during her comments about immigrants in LA.First, they discuss President Trump's choice to cut his visit to the G7 summit unexpectedly short. Afterward, he issued several social media posts putting Iran's feet to the fire. They discuss Trump's consistency on refusing to allow Iran to have nuclear weapons and consider precisely what assistance he's willing to provide to Israel.Next, they wonder why Tulsi Gabbard did not attend the recent national security meeting at Camp David just days before Israel launched pre-emptive strikes inside Iran. Was she not invited? Did she choose not to come? And does this explain her cryptic video about being on the brink of nuclear annihilation just days later? Finally, they shake their heads again as Mayor Bass says much of the city's economy would suffer without immigrants. Of course, she won't distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants. She reveals the stark truth that California's economy functions on the backs of exploited illegal immigrants, leaving Jim and Greg to wonder how anyone could support her as mayor. Please visit our great sponsors. America stands at a crossroads as Marines deploy on the streets of Los Angeles. This gripping analysis examines whether we're witnessing the early stages of a modern civil war or something else entirely. The evidence is sobering: combat-trained Marines entering densely populated urban areas, coordinated opposition with pre-positioned supplies, and definitions of conflict that match our current situation with disturbing accuracy. At the heart of this crisis lies America's immigration dilemma. Millions entered the country under what appeared to be an open invitation, seeking better lives only to become pawns in an escalating political battle. Now, as deportation policies move forward, battle lines are drawn between federal authorities and local governments. CBS News polling reveals the stark partisan divide fueling this conflict – 93% of Republicans support current deportation efforts while 82% of Democrats oppose them. This leaves political leaders like Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass trapped by their bases, unable to compromise without significant political fallout.Where do we go from here? The episode explores multiple potential outcomes ranging from military confrontation to diplomatic resolution. The most disturbing possibility is an endless quagmire that drains public support and creates generational conflict. A negotiated settlement between federal and state authorities offers the most humane path forward, but requires leaders willing to risk political capital for the greater good. As partisan extremes tear at America's fabric, this nonpartisan analysis offers sober reflection on how we might step back from the brink before more blood is shed. Previous episodes from 2020-2021 warned about these exact scenarios – now they're unfolding before our eyes. The question remains: can we find common ground before it's too late?Support the showEngage the conversation on Substack at The Common Bridge!
SEASON 3 EPISODE 136: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Gavin Newsom has reached his "EFF IT" moment - and it might prove to be the moment we began to save the democracy. If you MISSED Newsom’s speech (and trust me, I did, its only failure was its rollout) I am going to play the whole thing at the end of the first segment because it was that good. Eight minutes of escalating but suppressed righteous indignation bordering on rage – eight minutes building towards Eff-It - of which I think I am still the Official Exclusive East Coast Distributor. I think I KNOW my eight-minute suppressed righteous indignation speeches and this was outstanding. Newsom alone has realized that all you have to do is stop playing Trump's version of this game, and introduce him to a NEW version in which the Mike Tyson Law applies - and he will have no chance. And Mike Tyson’s law – is that everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.” As you listen to the speech, my connoisseur’s advice is to listen to the slow burn and the rapidly decreasing time between each metaphorical shot Newsom takes. It’s not just the FIRST grown-up speech responding to Trump’s evil. It’s a really good one. And it ends with… Trump getting metaphorically punched in the face. But consider the larger context. Newsom’s emergence – this is a stupid analogy but it somehow works – was like a caterpillar emerging as a gigantic butterfly, a butterfly equipped with nukes, a stealth bomber butterfly – and THAT was last Friday with his threat to crash Trump by withholding all of California’s federal taxes, all 692 billion of it – THE economic civil war game-ender I have been advocating out here in the wilderness for a decade. Then he says “wait, I’m not finished yet” and he goes back inside the cocoon for a minute and comes out even LARGER with MORE nukes and now he is THE Resistance, THE Democratic Party, and THE hope to save America. A week ago Gavin Newsom was posting a podcast with quote “Doctor” Phil McGraw, who did a ride along with ICE raiders. June 4: glad-hand interview that utter fraud Phil McGraw AFTER glad-hand interviewing Newt Gingrich, Michael Savage, Charlie Kirk and Steve Bannon. June 6: respond to Trump’s threats to kneecap California by threatening to lead a TAX STRIKE – the most liberal, progressive, in-your-face political protest proposed this century. June 7-8-9: come back and TOP that with calling the bluff of these Halloween Mask bullies like Trump and Tom Homan. June 10: give this speech. So, now the question is: Why haven’t any other Democratic so-called leaders followed Newsom over the top into no-man’s land even though he went first and discovered there are 100 to 200 million Americans just standing there waiting for somebody to lead them against Trump? B-Block (38:22) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Senator Kevin Cramer, who has never held a real job in his life (an entire career as a politician or failed political candidate) doesn't see the need for ANY federal minimum wage. Tulsi Gabbard thinks the "elites" have underground bunkers in which they can survive nuclear war. And Terry Moran got fired for an analytical opinion about Stephen Miller, but Jake Tapper can retweet Jonah Goldberg's opinion retweeting Fox's opinion retweeting Fetterman's opinion about how much the Democrats are hated. Fire. Tapper. Now. C-Block (50:00) IN MEMORY OF MINET GERMAIN OLBERMANN: Tuesday was World Pet Memorial Day and yesterday was the third anniversary of his gotcha day, so please let me tell you about my late rescue Minet. He arrived here a month shy of his 15th birthday with no expectations and very little awareness of the world around him. And then a little dental care and a little attention and the next thing I knew he was literally jumping for joy on the streets of New York. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
You’ve seen the headlines, the news footage, and the online outrage about the ICE raids in LA, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass joins Sophia to give a real-time report on the State of the City. How did a small pocket of unruly protesters in one of the largest populations in America lead to military movement on city streets? Should law-abiding Angelinos be living in fear?Mayor Bass sounds the alarm on the daily departure from due process, and what could be next in the immigration sweeps happening across the country.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum discuss the ICE raids and unrest in Los Angeles with L.A. Mayor Karen Bass. Tiffany Cross is out sick this week. We have all seen the sensational images from the protests and unrest in L.A. following last Friday’s ICE raids. The ICE raids targeted immigrants at their workplaces, including Home Depot and a clothing store. Since then, the National Guard has been called up by President Trump to quell what he’s calling an “insurrection.” The use of that word, “insurrection,” is highly intentional, as is the effort by Trump and rightwing media to paint L.A. as a chaotic, lawless place. Trump is ratcheting up his mass deportation plans and Mayor Bass says that Los Angeles is the testing ground. The unrest in L.A. dovetails into an ongoing conversation we’ve been having with you, our audience. We’ll be joined by executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI), Attorney Nana Gyamfi. BAJI advocates for the nearly 10 million Black immigrants, refugees, and families living in the U.S. As BAJI’s director, Nana will respond to some of YOUR comments critiquing our hosts’ support of migrant communities. Nana Gyamfi brings with her over three decades of service to the Movement for Black liberation, and over twenty years experience directing Black social justice organizations and networks. She is a human rights and criminal defense attorney, a professor in the Pan African Studies Department at the California State University Los Angeles, and a radio personality. Join Jim and Greg for Thursday's 3 Martini Lunch as they break down the money trail that might explain Gov. Newsom's reluctance to confront the LA rioters, whether the evacuation of some U.S. personnel and their families means we're on the brink of major conflict in the Middle East, and the staggering incompetence of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.First, they dig into reports suggesting California Gov. Gavin Newsom was uninterested in maintaining order during the recent LA riots because the group sponsoring the protest, the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, contributed nearly half a million dollars and a lot of manpower to help him survive the 2021 recall.Next, they wonder how to interpret the State Department's decision to remove some U.S. personnel and their dependents from Iraq, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Are we on the brink of conflict over Iran's nuclear program or is this simply a move to pressure Iran to accept the U.S. nuclear deal? Finally, they head back to Los Angeles as Mayor Karen Bass continues to ooze incompetence. And she is still blaming the rioting, the looting, and the property destruction on President Trump and his followers. Jim explains how Bass has now badly failed two big tests over the past six months and reminds us that Bass was on Joe Biden's short list for a running mate in 2020.Please visit our great sponsors:Talk it out with Betterhelp.
