Auburn's newly appointed Democrat Deputy Mayor, Cheryl Rees, became an unintended symbol of Washington State's escalating crime crisis when her Kia Soul was stolen during her deputization ceremony, directly outside City Hall. The theft, executed by a group of juveniles known for targeting Kias and Hyundais, reflects a broader trend of unchecked property crime fueled by soft-on-crime policies. Despite significant police efforts, the stolen car was found abandoned with damages and missing items. Rees, echoing conservative frustrations, criticized the lack of accountability in the state's justice system. This incident underlines the consequences of lenient justice reform and raises questions about public safety in Democrat-run areas, where high property crime rates have become the norm. The growing crime wave signals a need for stricter enforcement and a reassessment of the state's misguided compassion policies.

Shoot us a Text. We're looking for the silver lining today as we talk about how US auto sales have slowed considerably through Q3. Plus, we give updates on how the port strike will affect the automotive supply chain, how Helene took out 672 Kias at one dealership, and Ford's forward-thinking EV home charger program.Show Notes with links:As a major U.S. dockworkers strike at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports enters day 2 with no resolution, European automakers face the brunt of the disruption, threatening to cripple supply chains and disrupt vehicle production.Affected ports handle 34% of U.S. motor vehicle and parts trade, worth $135.7B.Professor Jason Miller posted a list of the most affected goods on LinkedIn and auto parts are #2, accounting for almost 3.3M tons a year. While dealerships are still tallying the effects of Hurricane Helene, Ken Ganley's Florida Kia dealership took a massive hit from Hurricane Helene, with nearly the entire inventory wiped out by floodwaters.672 vehicles, including 12 customer cars, were totaled due to flooding.Estimated losses range from $28 million to $30 million, with $3.5 million in deductibles. The dealership reopened just two days after the storm, despite severe damage."Kia was incredible throughout this," Ken said. "They immediately had cars available for us. Believe it or not, we sold two new Kias yesterday."As the third quarter ends, U.S. auto sales growth slowed to an estimated 3.88 million units, just 0.2% YOY, far below expectations, signaling caution in the market.Inflation and higher costs are making consumers cautious, pushing demand toward smaller, budget-friendly vehicles like subcompact SUVs and compact pickups.GM is expected to retain the top spot in sales, though it will see a 3% decline, while Toyota and Ford are close behind.Interest rates for auto loans remain high, with rates nearing 9.61% for new vehicles and nearly 14% for used, keeping buyers on the sidelines.Starting October 1st, Ford is offering free home chargers and installation to electric vehicle buyers through its new "Ford Power Promise" program, aiming to remove barriers for potential EV customers. The Ford Power Promise includes free installation of the Ford Charge Station Pro, a Level 2 home charger.Ford hopes the offer will ease concerns about charging infrastructure, boosting EV sales, especially for models like the Mustang Mach-E.Buyers who opt out of the charger program can receive $2,000 toward their EV purchase or lease. The program also highlights Ford's robust battery warranty, covering the EV's high voltage system and battery for 100,000 miles or eight years.“We think the way it's set up, it'll provide education for shoppers and intenders. The most common age of the suspects, he said: 16 and 17. “The car has no value to them. It's the ride. It's what they're after, the time in the car to get to point A to point B. On Thursday, the Minneapolis city council unanimously passed a resolution that calls for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to initiate a national recall of specific Kia and Hyundai models that are vulnerable to theft. The council says St. Paul will be signing onto the resolution, and its pressure that city councils nationwide are putting on federal officials. The thefts of Kias and Hyundais have not slowed down since it became a problem during the pandemic. In Minneapolis, police tallied 2,378 Kia and Hyundai thefts in 2022, which was an 836% increase. In 2023, the number is still rising, nearly doubling to 4,085 as of November. Some of those vehicles have been stolen multiple times. The automakers have offered software updates and local departments have offered steering wheel locks, but that hasn't seemed to prevent thefts. Michael Brooks is the executive director for the Center for Auto Safety, a national consumer advocacy organization. He joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to explain where car owners and city officials can go from here.

Lizz adds her thoughts to the driveway dump today with a bit about her thought-provoking-reels addiction, eating out vs. eating in, and the $16 Panera crime. Famous TV couples are featured on today's Valentine's edition of the great eight. In the lineup are: Ross and Rachel from Friends, Jim and Pam from The Office, Marshall and Lily from How I Met Your Mother, Jess and Nick from New Girl, Cece and Schmidt from New Girl, Ben and Leslie from Parks and Rec, and Blair and Chuck from Gossip Girl. In industry news, State Farm and Progressive are declining new insurance policies on some Hyundais and Kias after nationwide thefts. Ford slashes the price of their Mustang Mach-E — following suit with Tesla's recent price drop. And the Grand Highlander has officially been released, so Kelly's got Car Mom thoughts to share. Jenna from California brings today's ditch the drive through and it's giving ‘Panera give Lizz her $16 back.'
