Send us a text and chime in!From May 18 through May 31, 2026, the Prescott Valley Police Department will join agencies across Arizona for the statewide “Click It or Ticket” campaign. This campaign is all about a simple habit that makes a big difference, buckling up every time you're in a vehicle and making sure children are properly secured in the correct car seats.Seat belts are one of the easiest and most effective ways to stay safe on the road, yet they're often overlooked. Taking those few extra seconds to buckle up not only protects you, but also sets a great example for kids, who often pick up safety habits by watching the adults around them.“The ‘Click It or Ticket' high-visibility enforcement serves as a reminder to always buckle up,” said Prescott Valley Police Chief Bob Ticer. “Our officers want every driver and passenger to reduce the risk of serious injury, vehicle ejection, or death in the event of a collision on our roadways. Every citation issued could be a life saved.”Supported by the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety, “Click It or Ticket” combines education and enforcement to encourage safe driving habits and help protect everyone on the road, especially our youngest passengers. By choosing to buckle up, we can all arrive at our destinations safely.Prescott Valley Police Department can be contacted at 928-772-9267 for non-emergencies, and 911 for emergencies.Check out the CAST11.com Website at: https://CAST11.com Follow the CAST11 Podcast Network on Facebook at: https://Facebook.com/CAST11AZFollow Cast11 Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/cast11_podcast_network

What happens between the moment of an accident and the moment a family is notified? In this powerful episode of Groove with Portia, I sit down with Christine Olson, founder of T.I.F.F. To Inform Families First. After waiting six hours to learn that her daughter, Tiffiany, had been killed in a motorcycle accident, Christine realized there was a gap in the emergency notification system that no family should ever experience.Tiffiany was only 22 years old. She was an organ donor. In her passing, she saved seven lives. But before that gift could even be processed, her mother was left waiting.Christine shares how that devastating night led her to work with lawmakers, law enforcement, and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to create a voluntary emergency contact registration system connected to driver's licenses. Today, millions of Florida residents have an emergency contact listed, allowing law enforcement to access critical next of kin information quickly instead of spending six to sixteen hours manually searching. We discuss:• How emergency contact registration works• Why notification delays happen• The emotional toll families experience during that gap• How T.I.F.F. has saved lives and protected families• What you can do in your state to advocate for adoptionTune in to hear how grief can become policy and how one mother turned heartbreak into protection for others.Learn why registering your emergency contact takes only minutes but can make all the difference in a crisis. Roads are a significant barrier to wildlife movement, whether you are a small salamander or a wandering wolf. Environmental activists like guest Steve Blackledge of Environment America have been advocating for the construction of wildlife crossings — physical structures, from big bridges to small culverts — to help mitigate the impact of roads. But in this advocacy strange bedfellows have emerged, like motorcycle clubs, whose members want to avoid hitting animals when out riding and insurance companies who want to reduce claims. Now there is a bipartisan effort at both the federal and state government to identify hot spots where roadkill is common, and to create new structures to help both wildlife and drivers more safely get to their destinations.Support the show

Break 1: Ingles Markets 2 STORY 1: Gwinnett stepping in to help as SNAP benefits partially cut Gwinnett County is stepping up—big time. With SNAP benefits slashed and the federal shutdown dragging on, officials announced $250,000 to help six local co-ops keep families afloat. “This is urgent,” said Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. “Over 90,000 Gwinnettians rely on SNAP, and federal employees are already going without pay. The need is only growing.” The funds, pulled from leftover summer lunch program money, will stock essentials like peanut butter, flour, and even dish detergent. The co-ops—Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Duluth, North Gwinnett, Southeast Gwinnett, and Neighborhood Cooperative Ministries—will divide the supplies and distribute them countywide. Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s Office is gearing up for its Thanksgiving food giveaway, expecting to serve 3,000 families. And on Veterans Day, the county’s Stand Down event will offer food, haircuts, and health screenings for veterans and their families. STORY 2: Gwinnett passes latest round of E-SPLOST  Gwinnett voters have spoken—again. On Tuesday, nearly 70% said “yes” to keeping the extra penny sales tax for schools, marking the seventh time since 1997 that E-SPLOST has passed. It’s never failed. “Thank you, Gwinnett voters, for putting students first,” said Interim Superintendent Al Taylor. The $1.5 billion raised will fund everything from new roofs and security upgrades to air-conditioned buses and updated Chromebooks. Not everyone’s thrilled, though. Critics like Laura Hunt argue the school board’s spending is out of control. Still, many parents, like Sara Gard, see it differently. “It’s hard to cheer for more taxes, but investing in our kids? That’s worth it.” STORY 3: Democrats take rare statewide election wins   In a rare shake-up, two Democrats flipped the script on Tuesday, breaking the GOP’s total hold on Georgia’s Public Service Commission. Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard ousted Republican incumbents Tim Echols and Fitz Johnson, riding a wave of frustration over rising utility bills and calls for cleaner energy. Their wins mark a rare statewide victory for Democrats, who haven’t seen much success here since Ossoff and Warnock’s Senate wins. The PSC, which regulates utilities, now has a 3-2 Republican majority—but Democrats now have a voice. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 4: AROUND TOWN: Snellville police named one of Georgia's top law enforcement agencies  Snellville’s police department just gave its residents another reason to brag—actually, make that two. The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety named the department one of Georgia’s best, awarding first place for Distracted Driving Enforcement and Education and second place overall for departments with 46-75 officers in this year’s Governor’s Challenge. “This reflects the hard work of every officer,” the department shared on Facebook. And this isn’t their first rodeo. Snellville PD has racked up awards over the years, including the Governor’s Cup in 2019, 2020, and 2022. Clearly, they’re doing something right. STORY 5: Travis, Harris defeat incumbents in Lawrenceville City Council races Lawrenceville voters shook things up Tuesday, ousting two sitting city council members in favor of fresh faces—including a retired investigative journalist. Randy Travis, a former FOX 5 Atlanta reporter, beat Councilman Austin Thompson by a wide margin: 1,062 to 527. Meanwhile, Gwinnett Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bryant Harris unseated Councilwoman Marlene Taylor Crawford, 1,021 to 562. This all comes as Lawrenceville faces big changes—like a vote to annex 19,000 residents. The alarming disparity between US and Canadian traffic fatality rates takes center stage in our latest podcast. While road deaths have surged 33% in America over a decade, our northern neighbors have managed to reduce theirs – but why? We dive deep into the fascinating research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety that reveals how different enforcement approaches and policies might explain this life-or-death difference. Our discussion explores how pedestrian and cyclist deaths jumped 64% in the US while falling 17% in Canada, and how truck-related fatalities show an even more dramatic contrast. Could it be that American resistance to automated enforcement, less strict drunk driving penalties, and dwindling traffic patrol visibility are costing thousands of lives? The conversation turns personal as we reflect on rarely seeing police running radar or motorcycle officers enforcing traffic laws in Houston compared to previous decades. This week's "Guess the Sold Car Price" game delivers some jaw-dropping revelations about classic car values. From a pristine 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air fetching over $44,000 to a 1936 Buick 40 selling for under $9,000, our hosts test their market knowledge with surprising results. We also cover Ford's $36 million quarterly loss driven by recall costs, the impressive story of a woman who legally claimed a dealership's name after they repossessed her car, and a packed calendar of upcoming car shows across Texas. Whether you're concerned about road safety, fascinated by classic car values, or just looking for your next weekend car event, this episode delivers thoughtful insights and entertaining automotive conversation.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Cities across America have been trying — and mostly failing — to achieve Vision Zero for more than a decade. But is it really time to trade the goal of ending road deaths and serious injuries for the aim of reducing them 30 percent by 2030? And would we be better positioned to eliminate the other 70 percent of fatalities if we made that strategic shift, or not?  Today on the Brake, we sit down with the presdient of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, David Harkey, to talk about his organization's pivot to push for a five-year full-court press on traffic violence, and why he doesn't believe that means giving up on ending road deaths overall. And along the way, Kea presses him to examine what strategies would really rise to the surface if we set a tighter time horizon for more modest road safety gains, and why we have to sweat our strategy when it comes to saving lives.

On this week's program, your host, Justin Mog, sits down with Alex Otte, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Regional Executive Director and former National President. Alex is a Kentucky resident, who was hit by a boat driven by a drunk driver while sitting on a jet ski when she was 13 years old. Despite sustaining severe injuries — including a traumatic brain injury, broken neck, shattered femurs, and the loss of her right leg below the knee — Alex survived and has dedicated her life to ending drunk driving. Learn Alex's personal story at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN7vEoTkeOE December is Impaired Driving Prevention Month - and December is also a month where we see an increase in impaired driving due to the holiday celebrations and increased travel. Tune in as Alex shares some valuable safety tips during this high-risk period. You'll also learn what MADD is doing to end drunk driving year-round, and how anti-drunk driving technology, required by the bipartisan, federal HALT Act which was passed into law in 2021, will ultimately end drunk driving. Drunk driving is an escalating public health crisis. Drunk driving deaths have increased by 33% since 2019, claiming more than 13,000 lives in 2022 alone — impacting families nationwide. Every 78 seconds, someone is killed or injured in a drunk driving crash. Anti-drunk driving technology in cars offers a lifeline, yet regulatory delays mean 37 more lives lost each day. MADD believes we can end drunk driving with lifesaving anti-drunk driving technology. The HALT Drunk Driving Act, passed in November 2021, requires a new national safety standard for anti-drunk driving technology in all new cars. The law then requires car manufacturers to integrate the technology in new vehicles. This technology will save more than 10,000 lives per year and prevent hundreds of thousands of injuries, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The HALT Act directs the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to complete a rulemaking process to determine what technology solution is ultimately chosen. The law directed USDOT to establish regulations for this technology by November 15, 2024. The rulemaking process involves gathering insights from a broad range of stakeholders including auto manufacturers, safety experts, engineers, and the public, ensuring that the solutions developed are both effective and practical. This is similar to the regulatory process that brought us seatbelts, airbags and backup cameras, which are all standard in new vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is directed to complete a rulemaking process within three years of the November 2021 enactment of the IIJA. Automakers will then have two to three years to implement the new standard. The auto industry has the resources and expertise to make safety advancements like drunk driving prevention a reality, much the same way it has used its R&D prowess for self-driving vehicles, electrification and many safety innovations. Taylor faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a crime. The shooting occurred around 10:15 p.m. outside an apartment building on Bentley Road near Interstate 75. Responding officers found Hall with multiple gunshot wounds, but he later died despite aid efforts. Witness statements led detectives to identify Taylor as the suspect. After a brief foot chase, Taylor was arrested at his Cumberland apartment by Cobb County officers early Saturday morning. Police from Marietta and Cobb County collaborated effectively, securing warrants for searches of both Hall's and Taylor's residences. STORY 2:     Campbell High Receives $50K Donation for Music Technology Program Campbell High School in Smyrna received a $50,000 donation to create a music technology program, thanks to a partnership between the Give a Note Foundation and Huber Engineered Material. The donation was presented during a morning assembly attended by Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, who praised the opportunity for students to engage in music technology. The program will teach students to use production equipment typically found in music studios. Already popular, 176 students have enrolled, and additional equipment donations have been provided. The event featured performances by the school's marching band and a surprise appearance by The BoyKinz. This initiative is part of a three-year investment by Give a Note, aiming to enhance music education in schools nationwide. Campbell is one of two high schools benefiting from this program, alongside Woodburn High School in Oregon. STORY 3:  Pedestrian Killed Crossing Mableton Parkway A 36-year-old man was struck and killed by a car while crossing Mableton Parkway near Community Drive in Mableton on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 10:49 p.m., and the pedestrian was not using a crosswalk. A white 2020 Nissan Murano was the vehicle involved in the accident, and the driver stopped following the collision. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office. Authorities have not yet released the pedestrian's identity as they await family notification. The campaign aims to educate parents and caregivers about the correct installation and use of car seats and booster seats to prevent child fatalities in car crashes. Educational events across Georgia will provide guidance on choosing the right seat based on a child's age, height, and weight, and ensure seats are registered for recall notifications. Properly installed car seats significantly reduce injury risks, and parents are encouraged to attend these events or visit fitting stations to ensure their children's safety. The initiative emphasizes compliance with Georgia state laws requiring appropriate restraints for children under eight and highlights the critical role of car seats in saving lives. STORY 5:  Georgia abortion ban comes under fire at Senate hearing An Atlanta woman, Mackenzie Kulik, testified before a U.S. Senate subcommittee about her experience with Georgia's restrictive abortion law, which bans most abortions after six weeks. Kulik, facing a dangerous pregnancy, was advised to rest and hydrate, as her case didn't qualify for exceptions under the law. The hearing, led by Sen. Jon Ossoff, highlighted the law's risks to women's health and its impact on the availability of OB-GYNs in Georgia. Dr. Carrie Cwiak criticized the law for increasing maternal mortality and forcing healthcare providers to turn away patients. The hearing underscored the broader political debate on abortion, with ongoing calls for federal legislation to protect abortion rights, contrasting with arguments for state-level decision-making. We'll be back in a moment    Break: INGLES 7 (ROASTING VEGTABLES) STORY 6:  IRS-CI Atlanta Field Office Reminds Sports Fans Illegal Gambling is Criminal Offense As the 2024-2025 NFL season kicks off, the IRS Criminal Investigation Atlanta Field Office is cautioning sports fans about the legal risks of illegal gambling, which generates over $700 million annually in the U.S. From 2020 to mid-2024, the IRS-CI launched 151 investigations into illegal gambling, leading to 71 convictions with average sentences exceeding two years. Illegal gambling funds criminal activities, and despite legalized sports betting in many states, it remains prohibited in Georgia and Alabama. A notable case involved a multi-million dollar tax evasion scheme in Alabama. Participants must report gambling winnings on tax returns, with the IRS urging individuals to maintain detailed records of their gambling activities. STORY 7:    Wellstar Kicks off Student Internship Program with Cobb School District More than 20 students from the Cobb Innovation and Technology Academy (CITA) have begun internships at Wellstar Health Center, as part of a healthcare career preparation program in collaboration with the Cobb School District. This initiative aims to equip high school students with essential skills for future careers in healthcare. The internship, running until December 31, offers three study areas: work-based learning, patient-care technicians, and certified nursing assistants. Students will gain hands-on experience, rotating through various departments, enhancing their skills and career prospects.
