Plus, Nick spends a week with the 2025 Cadillac Lyriq after getting a taste last year, and Nick and Nathan ponder what life would be like in the trades behind the wheel of the 2024 Ford E-Transit. In this week's episode of the Everything EV Podcast  Matt Allan and Richard Alvin are here to discuss the latest developments in electric vehicles, business fleets, and everything in between. Here's what's in store: • RAC Warranty Claims Breakdown: Think EVs are expensive to repair? Think again. The RAC's warranty figures reveal the most costly payouts of 2024, with a petrol BMW engine replacement topping the list at £26,000 – far outpacing EV repair costs. • Cybertruck Seized in Manchester: The first imported Tesla Cybertruck in the UK has been confiscated by Greater Manchester Police for failing safety and registration standards. We delve into why the Cybertruck isn't road-legal in the UK and what might happen to the vehicle. • Alpine A290 Orders Open: Renault's iconic hot hatch gets the Alpine treatment. Priced at £33,500, this electrified competitor to the Mini SE promises driving thrills with added practicality. • Affordable EVs Expand Market Options: Great Wall Motors' Ora 3 sees a significant price drop to under £25,000, taking on competitors like the Renault 5 and Hyundai Kona Electric in the growing small EV segment. • Business Fleet Electrification: We speak with Tom Rowlands, Global MD of EV Solutions at Corpay, about the transition of business fleets to EVs, the challenges they face with charging infrastructure, and why fleets are still hesitant to fully electrify. • EV Resto-Mods: Charged Cars is back with a modern twist on the classic 1967 Ford Mustang. This £350,000 ground-up recreation pairs retro styling with an all-electric powertrain. Is this the future of classic car electrification, or is it too niche to succeed? • Trump's EV Policies on the Horizon: With President Trump set to resume office, we look ahead to his expected anti-EV stance, potential tariffs on Chinese imports, and what this means for the global and UK EV markets. The 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid has been named North American Car of the Year, and nobody knows more about the car and process than NACTOY jurors Jack Nerad and Matt DeLorenzo, who host and co-host this week's show. They'll take you behind the scenes to discuss not only the winning vehicle but also the procedures that resulted in the choice of Honda's highly popular compact car. At the same time, Nerad and DeLorenzo will offer long looks at the winners of the North American Utility of the Year and North American Truck of the Year — the 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz and the 2025 Ford Ranger. You'll hear commentary on these vehicles you won't get anywhere else. In our interview segment this week, you'll also hear a discussion you won't hear anywhere else. Russell Wager, Kia America's vice president of marketing, is our guest. Jack Nerad sat down with him to talk about the opportunities and challenges presented as the country transitions from the Biden years to the Trump era. Speaking of Biden, as one of his last acts in office, he and his Administration essentially banned Chinese-built cars from entering the U.S. market and, at the same time, banned vehicles with Chinese technology and hardware. We'll discuss the ramifications of that coming up. In our road test segment, guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo will detail the special virtues of the 2025 Infiniti QX55, and Jack Nerad will provide an in-depth report on the 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric — a vehicle that might be the best value among battery-electric vehicles right now. Listener Question of the Week “It seems like electric cars are more expensive than gasoline vehicles, but some people tell me that you can quickly make up the difference because they cost much less to own and operate. Today we dive into the big discounts making EVs more affordable than ever. We also talk about New Jersey's move to ban gasoline cars by 2035, as well as the options and soon-to-be real future of digital car keys.Amid increasing US production and surplus inventory, EVs are seeing significant discounts. However, this buyer's market might not last long.OEMs from Ford to Tesla have been cutting EV prices in response to a surplus in the US, with some discounts up to 31%, making them competitively priced against gas powered equivalentsFor instance, the BMW iX, with advanced features like a touch-responsive sunroof and gesture-controlled stereo, is available at a 17% discount for $80,195. For more budget-friendly options, Nissan's Ariya is listed at an 18% discount for $36,690, while the Hyundai Kona Electric is offered in Atlanta at a substantial 31% discount, priced at $29,990.Elaine Buckberg, a former economist at General Motors and a senior fellow at Harvard University says,“The stories being written that it's falling apart are just dead wrong. The aggressive pricing is likely reflective of an inventory imbalance that will regulate as EV sales are up 2.5 times in the last 12 months2035 might just be the new 2030. Joining states like California, New York, and Colorado, New Jersey  is doing what it can to speed up its EV Transition and has announced a ban on manufacturer sales of new gasoline vehicles by 2035.New Jersey adopts California's Advanced Clean Cars II regulation, aiming for 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035.The rule mandates that 43% of cars produced by 2027 be zero-emission, increasing to 68% by 2030.This regulatory shift doesn't impose direct obligations on consumers or dealers, but significantly influences manufacturer production. The New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers criticizes the move, citing concerns over consumer choice and affordability arguing the mandate could significantly disrupt the market, impacting both consumers and car dealersImagine a world where losing your car keys doesn't matter? Some of the brightest minds are doing just that as digital keys are steadily making their way to center stage. While adoption is growing, questions around technology choices, security, and compatibility remain.Daniel Knobloch, vice president and a board member at Car Connectivity Consortium who also worked for over seven years as a wireless systems architect at BMW talks about the emerging tech in an interview on The VergeThere are a variety of standards in play that each have pros, cons, and a chance of making it into your next new vehicleNFC: Near-Field Communication, UWB: Ultra-Wideband and Bluetooth.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Show #1460 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Monday 9th May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. GERMANY'S PLUGIN EV SHARE UP TO 24.3% Germany, Europe's largest auto market, saw plugin electric vehicles take 24.3% share in April 2022, up from 22.1% YoY. Overall auto volume was down, by over 21% YoY, and over 40% compared to pre-pandemic seasonal norms. April's combined plugin result comprised 12.3% battery electrics (BEVs), and 12.0% plugin hybrids (PHEVs).  Combustion-only powertrains faired worst in terms of volume drop, with diesel sales down almost 30% YoY, and petrol down almost 28%. With current BEV market leader Tesla not having any large scheduled deliveries in April, other marques and models had a chance to shine, with the Fiat 500e coming out on top. The Mercedes EQB stepped up in registered volume by some 5× over the period, seeing a healthy 1,405 units over the February to April period, from 295 previously. The BMW i4 increased 2.7× to 755 units. April BEVs: Fiat 500e, BMW i3, Hyundai Kona, Enyaq, E-Tron, Smart Fortwo, Opel Corsa, ID.4, Zoe, E-208, Merc EQB, Kia Niro EV, Dacia Spring, VW e-Up!, Polestar 2, ID.3, Renault Twingo, Audi Q4 e-tron, IONIQ5 and Kia EV6 Original Source: https://cleantechnica.com/2022/05/06/germanys-plugin-ev-share-up-to-24-3-economic-pressures-mounting/ TOYOTA SAYS BZ4X WON'T FAST CHARGE WHEN COLD From Kyle Conner @ Out of Spec:  "Charging times are estimated based on ideal charging conditions. As temperatures decrease below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, charging time will increase significantly. Drive battery level and condition, charger specifications and DC charging more than twice per day also can negatively affect charging time. DC charging may not work on AWD bz4x when the temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit." That's 5 degrees celsius. In April, some 6,365 new plug-in cars were registered (up 41% year-over-year), which is 9% of the total. - The average market share of plug-ins in the recent six months stays above 10%, which is a good foundation for the future. With outstanding conditions for solar electricity generation and unleashed production of BEVs (supported by new battery gigafactory investments in the pipeline), Spain has very high potential for electrification. - Stats for the month:  BEVs: 1,991 (up 36%, at 2.8% market share) PHEVs: 4,374 (up 43%, at 6.2% market share) Total: 6,365 (up 41%, at 9.0% market share) Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/584466/spain-plugin-car-sales-april-2022/ 12.5% OF NEW LIGHT-DUTY VEHICLE REGISTRATIONS IN CALIFORNIA WERE PLUG-IN VEHICLES - In California, 12.5% of new light-duty vehicle registrations were plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) in 2021, according to the data released by the Department of Energy (DOE) - Next highest were the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Washington, and Oregon, which each had PEV registrations accounting for more than 7% of new registrations. - Additionally, Californians bought roughly 15,000 more EVs during this quarter than last quarter and Q1 of 2022 EV sales are up by 37%, relative to EV sales at this time last year. The market share of electric vehicles in California jumped to 16.32%. This momentum continued in the first quarter of 2022, when -- despite all the challenges -- the Chinese NEV market posted a 140 percent year-on-year growth. - On Thursday, the company launched the production of BMW i3, tailormade for the Chinese market, at its new plant, dubbed Lydia, in Shenyang, northeast China. Last month, the company also held the world premiere for its all-electric BMW i7 luxury sedan. Ford will be selling the shares through Goldman Sachs, sources said. - Shares of the EV manufacturer have plummeted by more than 50% in the first three months of 2022, reversing course from the fourth quarter, when the company held its stock market debut and saw its value skyrocket. Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2022/05/08/ford-is-selling-8-million-rivian-shares-sources-say.html FORD MIGHT HAVE VERY BAD NEWS FOR RIVIAN - Amazon owned 17.74% of Rivian as of Dec. 31 and Ford owned 11.42%, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. - Ford, for its part, posted a net loss of $3.1 billion from January to March. "A net loss of $3.1 billion was primarily attributable to a mark-to-market loss of $5.4 billion on the company's investment in Rivian. Adjusted earnings before interest and taxes were $2.3 billion," Ford said. - Rivian shares have slumped 72.2% this year. The market capitalization at Rivian has shrunk by $66.1 billion, to $25.43 billion from Dec. 31 to May 6. - The R1T is one of the main rivals of the F-150 Lightning, the electric version of the F-150 pickup. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 17th October. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA'S MUSK DIALS INTO VOLKSWAGEN EXECUTIVE CONFERENCE "Tesla (TSLA.O) boss Elon Musk has addressed 200 Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) executives via a video call after an invitation from the German carmaker's CEO Herbert Diess, who wants to galvanise VW's top brass for a faster pivot to electric vehicles." reports Reuters: "The comments on Thursday by Musk to a VW managers gathering in Alpbach, Austria, confirmed by Diess via Twitter on Saturday after a report in Handelsblatt daily, included praise of VW for being an "icon" and Tesla's greatest challenger, Handelsblatt said. The paper said that when asked by Diess why Tesla was more nimble than its rivals, Musk said it came down to his management style and that he is an engineer, first of all, and has an eye for supply chains, logistics and production." Diess said on Linkedin: ""Happy to hear that even our strongest competitor thinks that we will succeed (in) the transition if we drive the transformation with full power" Read more: https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/teslas-musk-dials-into-volkswagen-executive-conference-2021-10-16/ ELON MUSK GETS ALMOST $13 BILLION RICHER IN ONE WEEK AS TESLA STOCK HITS 8-MONTH HIGH "The boom times made Musk richer than Jeff Bezos in late September and pushed his net worth past $200 billion for the first time. He's having fun with the competition. After telling Forbes he would send Bezos a silver medal upon his ascent to the top spot, he followed through on that promise on Monday by replying to one of Bezos' tweets with a silver medal emoji." writes Forbes: "Although Musk widened the gap this week, Bezos still got $5.6 billion richer on Friday with Amazon stock rising 3.3%. Since stepping down as CEO of Amazon in July, Bezos has spent more time in the public eye promoting his commercial spaceflight company Blue Origin" https://www.forbes.com/sites/hanktucker/2021/10/16/elon-musk-gets-almost-13-billion-richer-in-one-week-as-tesla-stock-hits-8-month-high/ KIA AND HYUNDAI SALES RISE IN SEPTEMBER "Kia reports global car sales of 223,593 (down 14.1% year-over-year) in September, although the all-electric sales are booming. The company reports 2,654 Kia EV6 sales in South Korea, which is 7.4% of the total volume (35,801). We noted that an additional 90 units were delivered in Europe, which means 2,744 total for the month of September." reports InsideEVs: "An interesting thing is that the Kia's older electric models - the Soul EV and Niro EV - also do pretty well. The manufacturer reports 975 Soul EV and 7,451 Niro EV sold outside South Korea (we don't have number for Kia's home market), which is 8,426 total (up 27% year-over-year). 80% of that falls on Europe. It means that the BEV sales already exceeds 11,000 (or 5% of the total volume) in a single month." As as for their sister company: "Hyundai reports a big 24% decrease of its global car sales (wholesale, on the manufacturer level) in September - to 279,307. Fortunately, the plug-in segment expands. The  ompany's sales of plug-in cars amounted to 16,400 (up 27% year-over-year), which is a record 5.9% share of the total volume." according to InsideEVs: "So far this year, Hyundai reports sales of over 110,000 plug-in car sales (up 35% year-over-year), which represents 3.8% of the total volume. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 continues its expansion at a rate of over 7,000 units a month (the 5-month average), followed by still quite good results for the Hyundai Kona Electric (over 4,100 in September)." Zhu, a fellow at the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK, is known for his work in electrical machines and permanent magnets, which won him the 2021 IEEE Nikola Tesla Award." Read more: https://www.scmp.com/tech/tech-trends/article/3152477/china-lags-important-electric-car-technology-despite-rare-earths EUROPE WILL LEAD ELECTRIC VEHICLE REVOLUTION "Tesla may be an American company, but it looks like the USA as a market will not be leading EVs into the mainstream. At least, that is, according to Prabhakar Patil, who was CEO of LG Chem Power, Inc from 2010 to 2015, as well as spending five years working on Ford's hybrid technologies. The former battery company head has estimated that 50% of cars sold in Europe could be EVs by as soon as 2025, when globally the figure will probably be more like 20%." says Forbes: "Many European countries are setting strict deadlines for the phasing out of sales of new fossil fuel cars and hybrids, such as the UK, as well as enforcing stringent emission standards for key cities. This is providing yet another incentive for residents to go electric. In the USA, in contrast, there is a struggle between the governing bodies of states that want similarly tough deadlines and incumbent economic interests. When Californian Governor Gavin Newsom announced there would be a ban on gasoline-powered cars by 2035, even the Environmental Protection Agency weighed in to say it could be illegal. There has been much discussion of how the magic $100 per kWh price boundary for batteries will enable battery-electric vehicles to become cheaper than internal combustion engine ones. Bloomberg NEF predicted 2027 as the likely year for the changeover." That's an article by James Morris from Whichev. Read more: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesmorris/2021/10/16/europe-will-lead-electric-vehicle-revolution-not-usa-says-ex-lg-chem-ceo/ TESLA'S MOST BASIC MODEL 3 VARIANT WON'T BE DELIVERED UNTIL AUGUST '22 "Tesla's most basic variant of the affordable Model 3 sedan is sold out nearly a year in advance. The Model 3 Standard Range+ is as basic as you can get with Tesla's vehicles. It is the most affordable car available from Tesla, starting at $41,990. When ordering the sedan with its standard Aero wheels, orders are now advised that the soonest delivery dates are set for August 2022." reports Joey at Teslarati: "Tesla's online Design Studio, the portion of the automaker's website that allows potential owners to design their vehicles, now shows an estimated delivery for the Model 3 Standard Range+ with Aero wheels for August. Other more expensive car variations are available for delivery as soon as November, but the cheapest combination of the vehicle won't be available until Q3 2022." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-standard-range-plus-august-2022-deliveries/ TESLA ROLLS OUT SAFETY SCORE-BASED INSURANCE PRODUCT IN TEXAS "Tesla is now selling insurance to customers in Texas, two years after first launching the offering in its now-former home state of California. But the version in Texas is different. The company says it will evaluate driving behavior in real-time using the “Safety Score” feature that it recently launched to screen drivers who want to join the beta test of the company's “Full Self-Driving” beta software." according to The Verge: "That means drivers might wind up paying less — or more — per month based on how many forward collision warnings they rack up, how hard they brake, how “aggressively” they turn, how much distance they leave to the car in front, and whether they keep their hands on the wheel when using Autopilot. Tesla used some driving behavior metrics to develop premiums in California, but they were not real-time and relied more on statistical evaluations. The offering in Texas represents a big break from how other insurance companies arrive at their quoted premiums. Even ones that rely on data from telematics dongles plugged into a car still consider other factors like age." https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/15/22728411/tesla-insurance-texas-safety-score-premiums-california NOT EVEN A PANDEMIC CAN STOP SOLAR'S EPIC GROWTH "Despite the pandemic, the United States built more utility-scale solar power plants in 2020 than any other year, with Texas leading the way. All those new solar plants added up to 9.6 gigawatts of renewable energy added to the U.S. power grid, bringing the nation's total solar capacity to 48 gigawatts. That's enough to allow further retirements in the nation's coal fleet, which had 223 gigawatts of capacity in 2020." says Grist.org: "Before 2017, California was putting up the lion's share of solar projects. But in recent years Texas has become the leader. In 2020, the state installed enough solar panels to generate 2.5 gigawatts of electricity under full sun, while Florida and California each built 1.6 gigawatts of utility-scale solar. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 27th  August. RIVIAN TO GO PUBLIC WITH IPO - Rivian Automotive, an electric-vehicle start-up backed by Amazon, announced Friday that it has filed a confidential draft registration form for an IPO. The size and price range for the IPO has not been determined, the company said in a release. - The news comes months after Bloomberg reported that the company had selected Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley as underwriters for its IPO and could seek a $70 billion valuation Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/27/rivian-electric-vehicle-maker-backed-by-amazon-files-for-ipo.html RIVIAN FILES TO GO PUBLIC AT UP TO A REPORTED $80 BILLION VALUATION - Rivian will be doing a traditional initial public offering, bucking the recent trend of electric vehicles going public by merging with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. - The draft will initially remain confidential, though Bloomberg has reported that Rivian is seeking a valuation as high as $80 billion. The IPO date is expected to be sometime before the end of this year. When it happens, Rivian will add to a fundraising war chest that is already over $10 billion. The service subscriptions could pave the way for Tesla to allow owners to repair their own cars. - The first subscription is the Service and Repair Information package, which gives owners access to manuals, tooling catalogs, wiring diagrams, and other pertinent documents. Owners had access to these documents previously, according to Tesla owner-hacker @greentheonly or Green. - The second, newer subscription gives Tesla owners access to the company's diagnostic software.  Green noted that Tesla's diagnostic software was not acc to US owners until now, but it was already available to owners in Europe. In December 2020, Tesla gave European owners access to their vehicles' toolbox feature, granting them access to diagnostics and some software. The electric automaker shipped around 1,300 Model Ys to Norway as it began deliveries to Europe recently. It turns out these Model Ys were shipped directly from Gigafactory Shanghai. In turn, all of these are the Tesla's Made-in-China (MIC) Model Y Long Range variants. - The Tesla Model Y has become the number one electric vehicle (which also means #1 vehicle overall) in Norway. A new public hearing will therefore be necessary. The Brandenburg State Office for the Environment has decided to schedule another hearing to discuss the objections. The date this time will take place online – because of the high number of objections and the current Corona regulations. 13 September has been mentioned as a possible date. However, the discussion could start earlier – but then it could also take a longer period of time, “possibly even several weeks”. Since then, the German automaker replaced the X5 with an all-new model called the X5 xDrive45e. - The addition of a bigger battery may be a more significant update, at least in terms of day-to-day driving. The pack now has a gross capacity of 24 kWh, with a useable 17 kWh. That endows the X5 xDrive45e with an EPA-estimated 31 miles (50 km) of range when just using the battery and electric motor, making it extremely competitive with other plug-in hybrids of a similar size and price. The X5 xDrive45e is also now capable of going a little faster in electric-only mode—84 mph (135 km/h) instead of 75 mph (120 km/h). A government document has revealed that an MG ZS EV with a 40kWh battery pack is to be offered soon. - In India, the three mass-market electric vehicles currently on sale include the Tata Nexon EV, Hyundai Kona Electric and the MG ZS EV. While the Nexon EV is the most affordable model of the three - it is possible that MG could just replace the current version with the more affordable 40 kWh model. Should this be the case, it would help bring the cost of the ZS EV down and may result in a boost in sales for the model. TESLA NOW AIMS FOR FULL SELF-DRIVING BETA PUBLIC RELEASE IN '~4 WEEKS' - Elon Musk is now saying that Tesla is aiming for the wider public release of its Full Self-Driving Beta in about four weeks. - Musk says that the plan has apparently changed and Tesla now aims to push FSD Beta v10 to the early access fleet next week. - “We should be there with Beta 10, which goes out a week from Friday (no point release this week). It will have a completely retrained NN, so will need another few weeks after that for tuning & bug fixes. Best guess is a public beta button in ~4 weeks.” - keep in mind that this is only for the US market. In Asia and Europe, Tesla has used the LFP cells, which are more restrictive due to their sensitivity to temperatures and offer less range. Due to the wide availability of nickel and Tesla's decision to steer away from cobalt in its batteries, it has used LFP cells since the Model 3 was produced in China in early 2020. A 250-megawatt battery would be located near its under-construction Gigafactory outside Austin, where it plans to build Cybertrucks and Model Y SUVs. The battery works with a process the company calls “reversible rusting,” in which the battery charges and discharges by converting iron back and forth into rust. - To charge, an electric current converts rust back to iron and the battery breathes out oxygen. To discharge, the battery takes in oxygen from the air and converts the iron to rust. - Each battery is filled with a non-flammable electrolyte liquid, similar to the electrolyte used in AA batteries, and is about the size of a washing machine, Form Energy says. Thousands of the washing machine-size battery modules are clumped together in power blocks and depending on what is needed, tens to hundreds of power blocks can be connected to the electricity grid. · Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/25/form-energy-raises-240-million-on-iron-air-battery-promise.html US: 2022 HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC GETS LOWER PRICE - The 2022 model year Hyundai Kona Electric in the U.S. has an MSRP price of $34,000, which is $3,390 less (or almost 10%)  than in the case of the 2021 model year. - The new MSRP is close to the MSRP of the Chevrolet Bolt EV/Chevrolet Bolt EUV duo, but the Kona Electric is still eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit. - It makes the car probably the cheapest in terms of price (MSRP + DST) per mile of EPA range, at $136/mile. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VOLKSWAGEN ID 4 GTX IS PERFORMANCE EV FLAGSHIP "The GTX’s powertrain comprises a 201bhp permanent magnet synchro machine (PSM) on the rear axle, and an asychronous motor (ASM) on the front axle. The two motors combine for 295bhp, although Volkswagen has yet to confirm the torque output. The system can power the ID 4 GTX from rest to 62mph in 6.2sec, with top speed limited to 112mph.  When it goes on sale, the range-topping version of the electric SUV will be the first ID model to use the new GTX badge" says Autocar: "While the GTI line is centred around the Golf, Volkswagen has chosen to use the ID 4 for the first GTX model because of both the growing importance of the SUV market and the decision to use a twin-motor powertrain, which the smaller ID 3 hatch is unable to accommodate."   "The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is on sale in Germany now priced from €50,415 (around £43,500), although that includes a €7,500 subsidy from the German government. Under normal driving conditions, the ID.4 GTX is propelled by the rear electric motor alone. However, when the car recognises a loss of traction or a demand for more power through the accelerator, it activates the front motor to keep the SUV planted or accelerating as fast as it can. " reports AutoExpress: "To support the more powerful electric motors, the ID.4 GTX is available with an optional Sports package, which adds lowered sports suspension and progressive steering - the latter altering the steering ratio according to the amount of steering lock applied. Volkswagen’s optional Sports Plus package builds on this further with adaptive dampers. To mark it out as the performance model it gets a new front bumper with LED-backlit intakes, a sporty rear diffuser and 20-inch alloy wheels. Matrix LED headlights also come as standard, along with dynamic indicators and a two-tone paint finish. Larger 21-inch alloys are offered as an option."   "Power is drawn from a 77kWh battery pack that sits underneath the cabin floor, and is capable of up to 125kW charging from rapid chargers. Estimated range on the WLTP cycle is rated at 297 miles – a drop of only around 17 miles compared to a standard 77kWh ID.4. VW hasn’t released kerb weights as yet, but thanks to the extra hardware on board expect a jump on a standard ID.4’s 2124kg figure, likely making this ‘electric GTI’ a 2200kg-plus proposition. " says the performance mag evo: "In reality, a 2.2 ton ID.4 is not the GTX we’re particularly interested in, but when Volkswagen (or likely Cupra) decides to drop this powertrain into something a little smaller and lighter, we’ll start taking notice of the ‘electric GTI’ connection VW is so determined to establish."   "The GTX name will be used on more upcoming all-electric ID models in Europe. The AWD version coming to the US later this year might not carry the GTX designation but will have similar technical specifications. When the driver hits the brake pedal, the rear motor is responsible for decelerating the EV while recovering energy. The front motor can recover energy in some situations. The rear motor can brake up to a deceleration rate of about 0.3g, after that, the hydraulic brakes kick in. In the D drive mode, energy regeneration only happens when the brake pedal is applied. However, when in the B (Brake) drive mode, power regeneration starts when the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal." says InsideEVs. The U.S. EPA range is 250 miles for RWD. "Standard features in the ID.4 GTX include a 30-color ambient lighting system, a heated leather steering wheel, leatherette seating with red stitching, a 5.3-inch driver's display, a 10-inch center touchscreen, the Hello ID voice assistant, a navigation system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking.  Optional features offered in various packages include a 12-inch center touchscreen, an augmented reality head-up display, a surround-view camera system, adaptive cruise control, and the Travel Assist driver-assistance system."   And we couldn't get to the end without a comparison with the cars which still, for many, define the EV segment. According to Car & Driver: "Claimed performance is, frankly, underwhelming by segment standards. Volkswagen's promise of a 6.2-second zero-to-62-mph time translates to GTI-level acceleration but looks leisurely by segment standards, delivering on our prediction that Volkswagen's fastest EV will be slower than the cheapest and least powerful Tesla."     https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-2021-volkswagen-id-4-gtx-performance-ev-flagship   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/354855/new-hot-electric-volkswagen-id4-gtx-launched-295bhp   https://insideevs.com/news/503979/volkswagen-id-4-gtx-electric/   https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36275982/vw-id4-gtx-revealed/   VOLKSWAGEN ID.5 TEASED "Recently, during the presentation of the ID.4 GTX, came the first major showing of the ID.5 and the confirmation of a GTX version of it. This is the latest vehicle to ride on VW's MEB platform for EVs but with a sleeker roof than on the ID.4.The front of the ID.5 is nearly identical to the ID.4, and the flanks are similar. The major change is the roof's distinct arch, whereas the ID.4 is a bit more angular. The design differences between them are not very significant." says Motor1: "The two models likely share the same powertrains."   SKODA STARTS ENYAQ DELIVERIES IN NORWAY "Škoda has started deliveries of its electric model Enyaq iV. The first model was delivered to a family in Norway. After the start of deliveries in the Scandinavian markets, Western and Central Europe are to follow from May and June 2021." says electrive: " the Enyaq iV 60 and 80 variants were available with rear-wheel drive – i.e. with 58 kWh or 77 kWh battery capacity. In the meantime, the basic Enyaq iV 50 model with a 52 kWh battery can also be ordered. The two all-wheel-drive models are not yet available."   UK pricing starts at £31,085 and UK deliveries start in a few weeks.   https://www.electrive.com/2021/04/28/skoda-starts-enyaq-deliveries-in-norway/   GM ULTIUM CHARGE 360 "Much like Ford does with its FordPass network, the Ultium Charge 360 will integrate GM’s own vehicle apps and software with a variety of third-party charging services, such as Blink, ChargePoint, EVgo, Flo, Greenlots, and SemaConnect. The goal is to create a seamless experience in which an owner of a GM electric vehicle can drive up to a station, plug in, and start charging without having to juggle multiple apps or third-party memberships." says The Verge: " lot will depend on the level of service provided by these various charging services, an aspect that GM will have little control over. EV charging in the US is a bit of a mess, with broken chargers, fraying cables, and unreliable maps. While GM can’t solve some of the more intractable problems, it says it’s doing what it can to make charging a little less of a headache. GM wouldn’t say whether its forthcoming EVs would include Plug and Charge capabilities, a new technology standard that allows a much simpler way to charge your car."   https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/28/22407789/gm-ev-charging-general-motors-ultium-charge-360   ELECTRIC FORD MUSTANG MACH-E TO PACE NASCAR TALLADEGA CUP SERIES RACE "The Ford Mustang-Mach E is hitting the track. The all-electric utility vehicle will serve as the pace car for the NASCAR Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, April. 25." says Fox NEws: "Ford's electric cars have come a long way in the past decade. While the Focus had a range of 115 miles per charge, the Mach-E is available in a version that can cover 305 miles between stops."   https://www.foxnews.com/auto/electric-ford-mustang-mach-e-nascar-talladega-cup-series   TESLA’S HEAD OF UI DEPARTS "Tesla’s longtime head of user interface design has left the company, and he has published some images of previously unreleased UI design for the Cybertruck and Full Self-Driving software in the process. These designs were seen partially in the Cybertruck launch but never so clearly…" says Fred at eelectreK: "According to his LInkedin profile, Pietryka left Tesla last month to create his own design firm called Moderne Grafik Anstalt. Pietryka has been replaced as head of UI design at Tesla by Ben Cunningham, who came to Tesla last year from Facebook. As part of Pietryka’s portfolio on his new firm’s website, the designer shared some images of his designs at Tesla."   https://electrek.co/2021/04/28/tesla-head-ui-leaves-leaks-unreleased-cybertruck-fsd-images/   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC DISCONTINUED IN KOREA "There've been whispers about an uncertain future for the Hyundai Kona Electric, and on Wednesday we learned it's going away in the automaker's home country of Korea. The country's Yonhap News Agency first reported Hyundai will discontinue the Kona Electric locally as recalls for battery fires continue. The company will instead focus on the Ioniq 5 as its flagship EV for now." sayas CNET: "Hyundai recently revealed a refreshed model with new looks but an identical powertrain, set to go on sale soon in both Europe and the US. Korea, however, will have to deal with whatever models remain at dealership lots."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/hyundai-kona-electric-discontinued-battery-fire-recalls/   THIRD VW PLANT IN CHINA UNDER CONSTRUCTION Volkswagen Group China has begun construction of an all-new MEB plant at Volkswagen Anhui recently. As the third of the Group’s pure-electric vehicle manufacturing facilities in China, following completion of the Anting (SAIC VW) and Foshan (FAW-VW) plants, the Volkswagen Anhui plant will be powered by green energy from day one. Due for completion mid-2022, the plant is set for start of production in the second half of 2023. The plant is another cornerstone of Volkswagen’s global e-mobility push. By 2025, Volkswagen Group China plans to deliver up to 1.5 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) per year.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   Whats the most effective consumer education regarding EVs?   Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com     It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PREMIUM PARTNER)     DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. NISSAN LEAF PRICE REDUCTIONS A couple of follow-ups from yesterdays podcast. We talked about the Nissan price reductions, but one listener asked how MUCH was the LEAF reduced by? So here goes with a number dump...   Acenta £25,995 (£1,350) N-Connecta £27,995 (£650) LEAF 10 £28,670 (£650) Tekna £29,995 (£665) E+ N-Connecta £30,445 (Downwards arrow £5,250) E+ Tekna £32,445 (Downwards arrow £5,265)   TESLA MODEL 3 SELLS WELL IN UK & GERMANY Second follow up from yesterday we talked about the UK plug-in share being 14% in March, but what about specific cars? "As usual, we have very thin up-to-date numbers from the SMMT on popular plugin models in the UK. Worth noting is that several of the top 10 best selling autos now have plugin variants (table below)." says Max Holland at CleanTechnica: "The Tesla Model 3, thanks to its usual end-of-quarter push, did get in to the top 10 overall autos in March, at #4 spot. Its total volume over the first quarter – of around 7,300 – should have put it at a respectable #11 spot on the overall best sellers list for the year so far, a good result." Remember the UK government removed the car grant on March 18th but Tesla responded by saying they would artificially rude their prices, ie keep them the same for the customer, IF you ordered by March 31st. So Tesla taking the hit might have persuaded people to bring forward purchases.   Tesla's German registrations in Q1 were up 83% year-over-year. Tesla registered 6,074 vehicles in Germany. In March alone it was 3,703. In Germany most EVs were sold by VW though, with over 10,000 in Feb of the ID.3, e-UP and PHEV Golf.   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/04/06/uk-hits-13-9-plugin-share-in-march-up-almost-2x-year-on-year   BMW GROUP SOLD OVER 70,000 PLUG-INS IN Q1 BMW Group sales of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles totaled 70,207 in in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 129.8% percent over the 30,692 sold in the same period a year ago. With the BMW iX3, which was just released in Europe a few weeks ago, the BMW i3 and the MINI Cooper SE, the BMW Group already offers a strong range of fully-electric vehicles that will be joined over the course of the year by two key innovation flagships: the BMW iX and the BMW i4. The BMW Group expects fully-electric vehicles to account for at least 50% of its global sales in 2030. The MINI brand is likely to reach this milestone already in 2027.   MERCEDES SNAGS A EUROPEAN TRADEMARK FOR EQG "Last fall, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius talked about the company's plans to electrify its popular G-Class SUV, and now, a European Union Intellectual Property Office filing found by members of the MBEQClub forum and reported on by The Drive Friday shows that Mercedes has trademarked the name "EQG." " says CNET: "This trademark filing very likely means that Mercedes is planning on offering a fully-battery-electric Geländewagen, rather than one that's merely been "electrified" with a hybrid system."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/mercedes-snags-a-european-trademark-for-eqg/   TESLA ROLLS OUT PREFAB SUPERCHARGER "A recent Supercharger installation in Beaver, Utah, has caught the eye of the electric vehicle community. Based on an image shared of the Supercharger site, it appears that the charging stalls have been pre-installed on a large concrete slab. Speculations initially suggested that the setup was just an updated iteration of the Megapack-powered mobile Superchargers that Tesla deploys during peak seasons, but it soon became evident that the setup in the recently-shared images was quite different. " reports Teslarati: "By setting up the Superchargers and their electronics on large concrete slabs even before they are placed in their respective locations, Tesla would be able to complete Supercharger installations much faster. It could also help the company install large numbers of Superchargers more efficiently.   The pic shows a line of 4 superchargers and 2 cabinets on one flatbed truck.   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-prefab-supercharger-images/   TESLA DELAYS DELIVERIES OF NEW MODEL S AND MODEL X ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Tesla buyers who ordered the new, recently refreshed Model S and Model X models are seeing their deliveries being pushed back as the automaker is experiencing delays in bringing the vehicles to production. When Tesla unveiled the new refreshed Model S and Model X in January, CEO Elon Musk said that the first deliveries would happen within a few weeks." says electrek: " That was six weeks ago, and there has yet to be a single reported new Model S or Model X delivery. Tesla appears to have run into some issues in producing and/or getting the new Model S and Model X ready for deliveries. Now, many Tesla buyers who placed orders early after the new Model S was launched are seeing their estimated delivery dates pushed back by a few months."   Elon Musk said on the earning call that he would hold an event within a couple of weeks to discuss the cars in more detail...that never happened.   https://electrek.co/2021/04/07/tesla-delays-deliveries-new-model-s-x-electric-vehicles/   2021 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR: VW ID.4 AND HONDA E AMONG FINALISTS "The recently announced short list of finalists for The 2021 World Car of the Year (WCOTY) award include several electric cars - two in the main category. Volkswagen ID.4 and Honda e will compete for the World Car of the Year title. We can see two more all-electric models - Polestar 2 and Mazda MX-30 - considered also in specific categories" says InsideEVs: "The last time we saw an electric car on the top was the Jaguar I-PACE in 2019, and previously the Nissan LEAF in 2011."   "A jury of 93 distinguished international automotive journalists selected the finalists by secret ballot based on their evaluation of each eligible vehicle as part of their professional work. KPMG tabulated the vote results."   Honda e also up for World Urban Car, Polestar 2 for World Luxury Car and MX-30 for World Car Design Of The Year.   https://insideevs.com/news/499545/2021-wcoty-finalists-volkswagen-id4/   ANDROID AUTO GETS NAVIGATION AND EV CHARGING APPS "Users of Android Auto should start to see a greater selection of in-car compatible apps on the Play Store. According to an announcement on Google’s Android developer blog, Android Auto devs working on navigation, parking, and EV charging apps can now push them to production." according to TheNextWeb: "Apps from the likes of Chargepoint, PlugShare, A Better Route Planner, and T Map, should start appearing on the Play Store very soon. Drivers can now use the apps as part of Android Auto on their car’s main infotainment screen without needing to be signed up to the beta program."   https://thenextweb.com/shift/2021/04/06/get-ready-heaps-more-android-auto-apps/   HYUNDAI-KIA WON’T USE CANOO EV PLATFORM "Canoo’s deal with Hyundai-Kia announced last year appears to have fallen flat. New Canoo chairman Tony Aquila broke the news last Monday during an “icy investor call,” as The Verge reports. The collapse is set against a backdrop of a strategy change at Canoo." reports electrive: "The Californian start-up seems to want to keep their skateboard platform to themselves and sell vehicles to fleet operators rather than selling the EV technology to third parties. Canoo had announced the deal with Hyundai in February 2020, and it was supposed to result in both the Hyundai and Kia brands building vehicles on Canoo’s electric vehicle platform."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/04/05/hyundai-kia-wont-use-canoo-ev-platform-it-appears/   HYUNDAI UNVEILS 2021 KONA ELECTRIC PRICING FOR AUS "Hyundai has released pricing and specifications details for the 2021 Kona Electric, which gets not only a fresh new face but also an increase in range and new driver-assist and technology features. Doing away with the honeycomb-style “grille” in favour of a sleeker nose and lines, the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric offers 484km (WLTP) driving range up from the 2019 model’s 449km, thanks in part to new low rolling resistance tyres." says thedriven.io: "It will still offer the same 150kW power output from its single-speed motor, as well as the same battery size, but pricing will increase slightly to a base price of $62,000 for the Elite model and $66,000 for the range-topping Highlander."   https://thedriven.io/2021/04/07/hyundai-unveils-2021-kona-electric-pricing-with-longer-range-and-design-tweaks/   BLUE BIRD DELIVERS ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS EQUIPPED WITH NUVVE V2G TECH "Iconic school bus manufacturer Blue Bird has delivered an electric school bus equipped with V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology from Nuvve, one of two Blue Bird Type C electric buses delivered to two school districts in Illinois. The e-buses are powered by the Cummins PowerDrive EV system." says ChargedEVs: "Nuvve’s V2G platform allows the bus batteries to store energy, allowing fleets to sell energy to local utilities at times of peak demand. The system can also be used to supply energy to the school and to intelligently charge the buses during non-peak hours to reduce utility demand charges. Hollis Consolidated School District’s latest e-bus purchase makes the district’s fleet 100% electric. "   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/blue-bird-delivers-electric-school-bus-equipped-with-nuvve-v2g-tech/   NEW CUPRA BORN - WINTER TESTING AT -30 DEGREES "Winter time just a few kilometres from the Arctic Circle. A completely white land, where about 200 words are used to describe snow by the local culture, with temperatures reaching 30 below zero and a circuit on a 6 km2 frozen lake.  The CUPRA engineers have spent two years testing the car on this harsh environment, using cutting-edge technology to take the development of the CUPRA Born to the highest level. Now in the final test stage before its launch, they are pushing the brand’s first 100% electric car to its limits in the most difficult conditions."   Will be made alongside the ID.3 and ID.4 in Germany.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVAfi_cjn3g&ab_channel=RECAnything   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   What EV do you want to see your favourite car maker launch which they haven’t already?     It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PREMIUM PARTNER)     DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CHINESE MILITARY REPORTEDLY RESTRICTS USE OF TESLA CARS AMONG PERSONNEL "Citing national security concerns, China is restricting the use of Tesla’s electric vehicles by some state and military personnel, according to a Wall Street Journal report from Friday. A separate report, from Bloomberg, said the cars were banned in certain areas." writes CNBC: "It comes after the country led a security review of the vehicles, where it reportedly found that Tesla’s sensors could record images of their surrounding locations. The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, added that Tesla could obtain key data, like when and where the cars are being used. It could also track more personal information, like a cellphone’s contact list if it’s connected to the car, according to the report. China is ultimately concerned the information could be sent back to the United States, according to the Journal article."   "Elon Musk has downplayed espionage concerns from China, saying if its vehicles were used for spying, the company would be shut down. The entrepreneur was speaking at the China Development Forum, hours after a screenshot of an order issued at a military accommodation complex banning Tesla vehicles went viral on Chinese social media." according to South China MOrning Post: "A person familiar with the matter said the ban was issued a couple of weeks ago because Chinese leaders were “very concerned”, adding that Musk might visit China next month.   Elon Musk said: "“If Tesla used cars to carry out espionage activities in China or anywhere, we will get shut down … There’s a strong incentive for us to be confidential"   https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/19/tesla-cars-restricted-among-military-personnel-in-china-report.html   https://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy/article/3126273/elon-musk-denies-tesla-cars-are-being-used-spying-china   GEELY TARGETING TESLA WITH NEW PREMIUM EV BRAND CALLED ZEEKR "China's Geely plans to roll out electric vehicles under a new marque with different branding and sales strategies, people familiar with the matter said, as the Volvo owner looks to take on its main EV rival Tesla with higher-end vehicles. The brand, positioned in the premium segment and named "Zeekr", will be housed under Geely's to-be-launched EV entity Lingling Technologies, according to three people, who declined to be named as the plan is not yet public. Reuters reported the plans for Lingling last month." says Autoblog: "Geely, the owner of Volvo Cars and 9.7% of Daimler AG, will roll out models under the new marque based on its open-source EV chassis, announced in September and called Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), the sources said."   "While details of Geely’s Zeekr brand are yet to be made public, speculation suggests it could be operated in partnership with Chinese internet services company Baidu. A strategic partnership between Geely, China’s largest private car maker, and Baidu, China’s leader in internet seach operations, was announced in January." according to Autocar: "Geely is set to sell Zeekr models through dedicated sales centres located in city centres using a marketing strategy that departs from its traditional dealership model. It also plans to support vehicles sales with a line of lifestyle-orientated clothing and accessory lines in a move aimed at reaching new customer groups."   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/03/19/geely-new-ev-brand-zeekr-tesla-competitor/   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/electric-cars/geely-launch-new-zeekr-brand-global-tesla-rival   TESLA GIGA BERLIN PRODUCTION TO START IN LATE JULY OR AUGUST "According to our German friend on the ground there, it was said today at a meeting of the Brandenburg Committee for Infrastructure and Regional Planning that Tesla Giga Berlin (which is in Brandenburg) will commence production in late July, or August at the latest." repotrs Claen Technica: "While this is perhaps earlier than many expected, there have been signs that Tesla’s Berlin gigafactory (or Brandenburg gigafactory) would get up and running in the first half of the year, or at least by the middle of the year."   On Twitter Alex Voight: "While this is perhaps earlier than many expected, there have been signs that Tesla’s Berlin gigafactory (or Brandenburg gigafactory) would get up and running in the first half of the year, or at least by the middle of the year. In order to start production, the final construction permit still needs to be granted Reviewing all known open points and listening carefully to the people in charge in committee meetings I have no doubt that it will come in right in time.   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/03/18/tesla-giga-berlin-production-to-start-in-late-july-or-august/   ELECTRAMECCANICA TO PRODUCE SOLO EV IN ARIZONA Canadian designer and manufacturer of electric vehicles ElectraMeccanica has selected Mesa, AZ, in the greater Phoenix area, for its U.S. based assembly facility and engineering technical center. Phoenix ranks as the fifth largest city in the U.S. according to 2020 census data, with nearly 1.8 million residents. Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix, ranks 35th nationally. The proposed facility in Mesa will support ElectraMeccanica’s strategic plan to meet anticipated demand for their flagship SOLO EV. When fully operational, the facility is expected to create up to 500 new jobs and will be capable of producing up to 20,000 SOLOs per year. The SOLO has a range of 100 miles and a top speed of 80 mph, making it safe for highways.   https://electriccarsreport.com/2021/03/electrameccanica-to-produce-solo-ev-in-arizona/   HYUNDAI OFFERS 250 KWH OF FREE FAST CHARGING TO KONA AND IONIQ WITH ELECTRIFY AMERICA "Hyundai Motor America will provide 250 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging on Electrify America’s ultra-fast charging network for owners of 2021 Kona Electric and Ioniq Electric models. Customers can access their complimentary charging by the Electrify America mobile app that will also help drivers find and navigate to Electrify America stations and to start a charging session. 250 kilowatt-hours equals about 1,000 miles of EPA-estimated driving range in a 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric or Ioniq Electric." says Green Car Congress.   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/03/20210318-hyundai.html   EVGO PARTNERS WITH MEIJER FOR MIDWEST EV FAST-CHARGING AT UP TO 350 KW The charging network EVgo on Thursday announced a partnership that will install publicly accessible EV fast-charging stations at Meijer supercenter locations in the Midwest. Although EVgo didn’t say exactly how many stations the partnership will include, it plans to start installing them in summer 2021." says Green Car Reports: "At present, the charging provider has more than 800 fast-charging locations, and with more than 250 locations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, and Wisconsin, Meijer will give EVgo a consistent retail environment—a bit like Electrify America and its Walmart connections.  EVgo’s new chargers will potentially be as fast-charging as some of those offered by Electrify America. They’ll range from 100 kw—enough to charge a Chevy Bolt EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, or Kia Niro EV at full speed—up to the 350 kw that can accomplish an especially speedy charge for the Porsche Taycan."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1131634_evgo-partners-with-meijer-for-midwest-ev-fast-charging-at-up-to-350-kw   VOLKSWAGEN IS TRYING ON-DEMAND FEATURE SUBSCRIPTIONS TOO NOW "There’s a trend unfolding in the auto industry toward subscription services and pay-as-you-go features. BMW made waves last year when it envisioned a future of “unlocking” heated seats, for example, with a one-time or recurring fee. Now Volkswagen is trying something similar with the new all-electric ID.3." according to Jalopnik: "Volkswagen’s pilot program will be rolled out in six cities in Germany this year, according to Autocar, and it will allow owners to enable certain features on demand, like “travel assist, stop and go, lane assist and ACC,” to give a few examples. At the moment, many brands offer on-demand access to certain features, though their impact has been largely restrained to aspects like navigation or little things, like adaptive headlights. As part of this initiative, Volkswagen will also test pay-by-mile billing, in addition to subscription and one-time billing options."   https://jalopnik.com/oh-good-volkswagen-is-trying-on-demand-feature-subscri-1846511749   You can listen to all 1026 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. KIA UNVEILS THE EV6, ITS FIRST DEDICATED EV "Kia has revealed the first official images of the EV6 – its first dedicated Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) built on the company’s new EV platform: the Electric-Global Modular Platform, or E-GMP. The EV6 is also the first of Kia’s next-generation BEVs to be developed under a new design philosophy that embodies Kia’s shifting focus towards electrification." says Next Green Car: "Kia has not yet provided any technical data on the EV6 with the revealing of the name and the sketch of the design. However, the Ioniq 5 should provide some good clues here, since it is based on the same platform. This basis will give Kia the scope for batteries with 58 or 73 kWh, powertrains between 125 and 225 kW. The technical details of the electric Kia might differ slightly, but the Kia EV6 should also have the fast-charging capability of up to 220 kW and the impressive charging curve of the Ioniq 5."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9106/kia-unveils-the-ev6-its-first-dedicated-ev/   DACIA SPRING EV NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER, PRICED FROM €12,403 Dacia is opening a new chapter in its history with the launch of all-new Spring, the brand’s first 100% electric car. Dacia benefits from the unique know-how and experience acquired by the Renault Group and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, pioneers of electric mobility for over 10 years. Priced at €12,403 after government incentives in France, Dacia Spring is the most affordable electric car in Europe, making electric mobility accessible to the greatest number of people. Beneath its SUV look lies a city car with record-breaking roominess with 4 real seats, a simple and reliable electric engine and a range of 230 km (WLTP) and 305 km in the city (WLTP city). The 33 kW (44 hp equivalent) all-electric power engine is coupled with a 27.4 kWh battery.   https://en.media.groupe.renault.com/news/the-all-new-dacia-spring-taking-the-electrical-revolution-for-a-spin-ace9-989c5.html   TESLA WILL ASK REGULATORS TO ALLOW FSD BETA RELEASE IN EUROPE, SAYS ELON MUSK "After Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the wider release of the newest FSD Beta a few days ago, this topic has attracted even more attention from those who want to become a participant in the early testing program. In addition to requests from North America, Europeans also expressed a strong desire to become beta testers. Musk wrote that Tesla will ask regulators in order to make possible the proliferation of FSD Beta in Europe." reports Tesmanian: "Also, in response to a request from a Tesla owner from Europe, Musk replied that the company would ask the regional regulators to authorize the use of FSD Beta there. If this approval is granted, it will become an additional stage in the development of FSD. The fact is that the layouts of cities in the United States and Europe are significantly different. Europe is characterized by compact cities with many narrow streets saturated with dense traffic."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-will-request-regulators-to-release-fsd-beta-in-europe-says-elon-musk   TESLA’S COST PER KWH FOR CELLS FROM SUPPLIERS REVEALED "Tesla sources many of its battery cells from third-party suppliers, like Panasonic, LG Chem, and CATL. Because of the massive rate at which Tesla buys these cells, it is paying significantly less per kilowatt-hour compared to its competitors, according to a new report from Cairn Energy Research Advisors" says Teslarati: "According to Cairn’s research, Tesla pays an average of $142 per kWh for cells purchased from its three previously mentioned suppliers. Meanwhile, companies like GM are paying $169 per kWh, while the industry average runs around $186, according to the firm’s report. Furthermore, Tesla’s packs cost $187 per kWh on average, with GM’s costing $207 per kWh and the industry average being $246 per kWh."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-battery-cells-cost-per-kwh-revealed-gm-competitors-cairn-report/   BP PULSE INVESTS £2 MILLION TO UPGRADE LEGACY CHARGE POINTS "In the UK, bp pulse is pledging to improve the reliability of the UK’s older public charging infrastructure by working with local authorities to upgrade and replace charge points across the country." reports Electrive: "The BP subsidiary – that was given the new name bp pulse incorporating bp Chargemaster and Polar in 2020 – has already agreed to invest over £400,000 in infrastructure for replacing more than 50 charge points. These are mostly owned by local authorities and originally installed over a decade ago with government grant funding under the Plugged in Places scheme. Beyond the upgrading of initial 50 charge points, discussions are already underway to make an additional £750,000 available for legacy charge point owners, which could see over 300 units upgraded. In total, bp pulse has made £2 million available for the endeavour."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/09/bp-pulse-invests-2-million-to-upgrade-legacy-charge-points/   RIVIAN CEO SHARES HOW ROOMY THE BACK OF THE R1S WILL BE "Rivian’s CEO RJ Scaringe Tweeted a video of himself surrounded by R1S electric SUVs. In the video, he explains how the second and third-row seats fold down and shares perspective of how much room future drivers will actually have." says Electrek: "In a recent Tweet, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe offers fans of the automaker a glimpse at a posse of R1S SUVs. The video features eight different R1S’ lined up in various colors. Scaringe speaks about how he has been driving the R1S the past couple weeks and has been loving it. He talks about loading up his kids and gear, and even posted along with the video, “Ready for camping!” This certainly fits the theme of outdoor, all-terrain situations the high-performance EV is geared specifically toward. Scaringe admits many people have been curious about how the second and third rows fold flat in the R1S, so he decided to share a demonstration. With the tailgate down, the seats lay seamlessly flat from the second-row headrests, out the EV’s rear."   https://electrek.co/2021/03/10/rivian-ceo-shares-how-roomy-the-back-of-the-r1s-will-be/   HYUNDAI ANNOUNCES NEW KONA ELECTRIC PRICES ""The refreshed Hyundai Kona Electric is now on sale, with prices inclusive of the £3,000 government plug-in car grant starting from £30,125. The all-electric SUV has been given a visual refresh, with more technology introduced across the range too" says CarWow: "Opt for a range-topping Ultimate spec, and that rises to £40,375. All cars get a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and equally-sized infotainment system as standard, along with rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Adaptive cruise control and keyless entr.y. Upgrade to the 64kWh and that’s paired to a 150kw, 204hp motor. That boosts range up to 300 miles as well. Both versions are said to be capable of being charged from 10-80% in 47 minutes."   https://www.carwow.co.uk/news/5151/2021-hyundai-kona-electric-prices-revealed     You can listen to all 1016 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. If recalling EVs were an Olympic sport, the Hyundai Kona Electric just went for gold. In the worst possible way. Hyundai is recalling 82,000 EVs globally to replace the LG Chem battery packs inside because there’s a potential fire risk. Oops a daisy. It’s kind of a bad look for the world’s fifth-largest carmaker - especially as the company pivots heavily towards EVs with brand Ioniq. Wiping $3 billion off its market value, Hyundai's stock slid 6.2%. Shares in its affiliate Kia Corp, which had been tipped in local media reports as the likely operational partner for Apple, tumbled 15% — a $5.5 billion hit." according ot Autoblog: "The announcement brings the curtain down on weeks of internal divisions at Hyundai Motor Co Group — parent to both automakers — about the potential partnership with Apple, with some executives raising concerns about becoming a contract manufacturer for the U.S. tech giant in an arrangement reminiscent of electronics firm Foxconn's role in making iPhones."   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/08/apple-car-hyundai-kia-collaboration-now-dead/   2020 SAW 10% PLUG-IN SHARE FOR EUROPE More data on 2020, this time from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Electrically-chargeable vehicles saw a similar surge in demand last year, accounting for 10.5% of all new car registrations in the European Union, compared to a 3.0% market share the year before. During the fourth quarter, registrations of electrically-chargeable vehicles (ECV) in the EU jumped from 130,992 units in 2019 to almost half a million (+262.8%), surpassing hybrid electric cars in sales volume for the first time. This strong increase in demand for battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) – with registrations growing by 216.9% and 331.0% respectively – was largely driven by government stimuli for low and zero-emission vehicles. Indeed, some of the biggest gains were seen in countries with the most generous incentives. In Germany, for example, BEV registrations increased by over 500% in the last quarter of 2020.   https://www.acea.be/press-releases/article/fuel-types-of-new-cars-electric-10.5-hybrid-11.9-petrol-47.5-market-share-f   CALIFORNIA: CUMULATIVE PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES REACH 800,000 "The cumulative number of plug-ins sold in California increased to about 800,000 (of course the number is lower due to sales out of the state or accidents/totaledvehicles). For comparison, the total number in the U.S. is almost 1.8 million. EV drivers can use more than 70,000 charging points in California, which means one charging point per over 11 EVs." according to InsideEVs: "Compared to more than 3.1 million cars sold globally in 2020, it seems that the U.S. plug-in market is seriously lagging behind with just about a 10% share out of the global volume."   https://insideevs.com/news/486280/california-cumulative-plugin-car-sales/   CITROËN AMI NAMED ‘MICROCAR OF THE YEAR’ "Starting the year as it means to go on, Citroën’s highly innovative AMI has successfully scooped the ‘Microcar of the Year’ title in the GQ Car Awards 2021. Having already been recognised with Top Gear magazine’s ‘Disruptor Award’ in the BBC Top Gear magazine Electric Awards 2020, the bold and creative AMI has been turning heads of late among industry experts and the public alike" asys EV Obsession: "Ultra-compact yet agile, Citroën AMI makes city travel and parking easy with a length of just 2.41m and a tight turning circle of just 7.20m. This will be the first in a network of Superhubs opened by Revel across New York City, the company said. Revel didn’t build the EV charging infrastructure in-house. Instead, it is using Tritium’s new RTM75 model for the first 10 chargers at its Brooklyn site, which will go live this spring."   https://techcrunch.com/2021/02/03/electric-moped-startup-revel-launches-an-ev-charging-business/   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC AND IONIQ ELECTRIC ADDED TO ‘ONTO’ Hyundai Motor UK has signed an agreement to supply all-inclusive electric car subscription service ‘Onto’ with electric vehicles for 2021. Hyundai will provide ‘Onto’ the new Hyundai KONA Electric Premium SE (64kWh) and the Hyundai IONIQ Electric Premium (38kWh), which will add a total of 275 new cars to Onto’s fleet by March. The TSB [Technical Service Bulletin] follows up with instructions to inspect the terminals if bolts turn out to be missing, as the lack of contact may cause arcing burns on the joints or terminals. Missing bolts are not just limited to the Model 3, as bulletin SB-20-31-012 for the Model Y states that some cars may have missing or loose suspension bolts, which are meant to hold the steering knuckle to the upper control arm. The consultants identified fleets as having the largest potential for electrification – in particular if incentivised effectively."n says electrive: "EY predicts a 24-fold increase in the total electrified fleet by 2030. As the analysts predict 15% growth anticipated by 2030, the fleet size in Europe would rise to 73 million electric vehicles. Ey also sees four phases, assess, introduce, operate, and scale-up. In practice, this translates to adding a small number of electric vehicles as a trial. Here, feedback and monitoring are essential before deciding to scale up and assess the success of the fleet migration strategy. Obviously, any decision will take into account the TCO that is key to any fleet. Ey suggests that fleet buyers “exercise their bulk purchasing power to secure lower upfront vehicle costs and reduce the total cost of EV ownership or lease.”"   https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/03/ey-data-model-suggests-73mn-fleet-electric-vehicles-by-2030/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK Regardless of tech or specs, who do you think is designing the best looking EV, and why? Tesla fan boys destroyed: Part 3 - about this allegedly superior tech

Tesla fan-boys routinely claim these cars are superior, technically. Vastly so. Unfortunately, the facts don’t concur. These are called facts. We can all agree on them. A Hyundai Kona Electric weighs 1685 kilos, has a 64kWh battery and offers an EPA range of 415 kilometres. Also, facts. So, when you do physics - like, just above basic high school physics - you might ask yourself: ‘What does a technological advantage actually look like?’ Because there really should be some numbers that shine like a beacon, illuminating just how smart and advantageous a Tesla is, because of its alleged incredible technical edge, right? Otherwise it’s all just empty rhetoric. If something exists ontologically, you can measure it, right? So this alleged superior tech should manifest in a measurable way, by virtue of its objective performance. Devices with superior tech typically do more with less. A more efficient refrigerator consumes less electricity and yet still keeps the champagne equally cold. We can measure this kind of thing with epistemological objectivity. (I’m imagining every Tesla fan boy in the universe scratching his head, at this point. Like, what’s that? It’s how science rolls, dudes - with epistemological objectivity. Look it up. Watch the John Searle tech talk at Google HQ, on artificial intelligence.) I’d suggest that a deep, fundamental Tesla technological advantage would be demonstrated if the Tesla flagship, for example, used substantially fewer watt-hours of electrical energy to transport a tonne of mass over a given range measured against a laboratory controlled test standard. If it did, we could prove its superiority, objectively. All we’d need are those three previously quoted data points, about which there is no dispute that I know of. We’d just need to calculate watt-hours stored in the battery, per tonne of vehicle, per kilometre of range. And if you ‘interesting’ fan-boys are right, Tesla should shine like a beacon of technical superiority. And the claim of superiority to which fan-boys adhere would thus be impervious to dispute. Get a calculator and crunch the numbers for yourself: Model S P100D: uses 88 watt-hours to take one tonne, one kilometre. Hyundai Kona Electric: 86 watt-hours per tonne, per kilometre. Conclusion: Pretty similar technology. But the Hyundai Kona is slightly ahead on energy efficiency fundamentals. The numbers do not lie. They’re called ‘facts’ and you Electric Jesus fan boys are not required to like this result. However you feel about the numbers, they remain facts. And they say Tesla lacks a measurable technical edge. So, three parts down - one to go. Internal combustion: not dead, and not dying any time soon. Hate away in the comments, but save your best work for tomorrow, because you Tesla nut-jobs are really going to hate Part Four.

You know how I always say ‘never modify a new car to do what you want it to do’? Like, it’s just over one per cent of the price of the vehicle. Tyres are actually the most cost-effective automotive performance modification of all time - because they bolt straight up, and they enhance acceleration, cornering and braking. Show me the other mod which can do so much, for so little. All you need to bring to the party is skill. So, 400 kays down the track, split between the ‘burbs and the open road... The biggest single difference is lateral grip. Which also means more roll too, which makes the electron-powered Kona feel more confident during assertive cornering. More progressive transition from grip to slip Better on-centre feel and positive return to centre out of a bend. You also get better high-speed stability - and stability transitioning the crown for overtaking. Better - astoundingly better - in the wet. It’s a complete dynamics character change. Tyres all look black and round, but there’s a vast difference between the crap ones and the good ones, and these Michelins are very good. There’s an amazing amount of tech - so here’s just a small insight… Tread specificity - outside for grip, concentric ring for high-speed stability and inside edge for water dispersal No spare for the Kona EV - you get a mini compressor and some goo. So a plug kit like this one can pay a real dividend on the open road. It won’t fix all punctures but it will keep you mobile after a simple puncture. I got mine from Sparesbox. Noisier, and probably won’t last as long. Quite expensive. But you get what you pay for - and you can certainly buy tyres from brands you’ve never heard of for less than half the price. But my strong advice is: don’t penny-pinch on tyres - you never know when that extra grip might save your life, or someone else’s. Overall, a tremendously positive change. I found them selling online for about $230 each (although Hyundai supplied these ones free and pre-scuffed from a previous assignment).

I just designed the perfect real-world EV. Tell me I'm wrong.

I just designed the perfect mainstream EV - it’s perfect - and nobody’s making it. Yet. (It’s more of a feasibility study, really.) This is a massive automotive industry opportunity. Save thousands on any new car (Australia-only): https://autoexpert.com.au/contact AutoExpert discount roadside assistance package: https://247roadservices.com.au/autoexpert/ Did you like this report? You can help support the channel, securely via PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=DSL9A3MWEMNBW&source=url I remain the ultimate EV skeptic. I don’t worship at the church of Electric Jesus. Never will. And yet I’ve been driving a Hyundai Kona Electric for about 6000km now. And I do enjoy driving it. I love not going to the filling station - nostalgia factor there: -273 degrees C, on a warm day. I love the way that Kona EV gets off the mark - silent but deadly. Peak torque at zero rpm. Awesome. And I’ve never needed it to take me more than 450 kilometres in a day. It’s good on the highway, too. When I have occasionally run it down to under 10 per cent remaining, it still charges up overnight on a single-phase 240-volt, 32-amp charger at home. (That’s like maxxed-out at-home charging - 7.7 kilowatts. Set and forget, there - also brilliant.) I like not contributing to air pollution in our cities. (At least in that car - in the other two big diesel tanks in the driveway … call me a hypocrite on that.) And energy security for Shitsville - so important. [MALS] EVs certainly have a niche carved out and well defined there, even though the grid remains properly filthy. But there is an EV elephant in this room: the fundamental impediment to mainstream adoption of EVs is price. The mighty Kona Electric is $25,000 more than its petrol counterpart. Like mid-$40s drive-away for the 1.6 Turbo Highlander. About $70,000 for the EV. That’s a massive monetary hit. The petrol MG ZS is $17,000 cheaper than the EV. Only a proper EV zealot with cash to burn can justify this, or perhaps a business looking to wear its green credentials on its sleeve. And, look, there’s nothing wrong with doing that - economic rationalism is not a prerequisite for owning a vehicle. I’m just saying economic irrationalism limits the number of EV sales that can be made, ultimately. Look at the opportunity cost: What else could you do with the $17-25 grand? Most people would say: Plenty. The only two ways to make this work on the corporate side are to charge a bomb and just trickle EVs through to receptive, wealthy zealots and let market forces work it out, or petition the government to subsidise EVs so they can go mainstream. What if there were a better EV? What if the car industry took its head out of its arse and instead made the EV that people actually need, with a balance sheet that balanced? (As opposed to the zealot-magnet.) I’m talking about a new EV segment: the shitbox EV. A fairly nasty second car. A runaround with minimal features, and not much range. Just right for average driving in built-up areas, a kid-school delivery and recovery device, right at home at the commuter car park or the local shopping centre. A device with roughly the raw sex appeal of a sandwich press. A device for which the primary purpose is simply to take the load off your nice, liquid-fuelled car. I actually think this is economically rational already - even though no carmaker is apparently doing it.

BMW i vehicles were to be sold separately from BMW or Mini. The first two production models are the all-electric BMW i3, formerly called the Mega City Vehicle (MCV), and a plug-in hybrid called BMW i8, "   "The new flagship of the BMW i sub-brand heralds the advent of an all-new hallmark design language. The overall exterior dimensions of the iX are comparable to those of the X5, whereas the height is similar to that of the X6. The large-diameter aerodynamic wheels remind pretty much of the high-end X7 luxury SAV. The iX electric flagship is underpinned by the latest, 5th generation BMW eDrive platform, which is also found under the new iX3 and will also make its underneath the upcoming i4. The architecture comprises the two electric motors, the power electronics, the charging technology and the high-voltage battery." according to BMW blog: "Other key features making their world debut in the iX are the hexagonal steering wheel, the rocker switch for gear selection and the BMW Curved Display. lighweight, torsionally-resistant CFRP components are used in the construction of the vehicle’s passenger cell, for the body’s side, rear roof sections. The CFRP, thermoplastics and aluminum are also extensively employed in the architecture of the bodyshell and chassis, thus helping effectively to lower the overall kerb weight of the iX and stay true to the lightweight concept."   "This wouldn't be a major tech launch if it didn't also feature a 5G aspect and indeed, the iX will feature built-in 5G connectivity, which should make it among the first -- if not the first -- 5G-enabled production car. Ideally, that means higher bandwidth and lower latency when the car needs to connect to the BMW cloud" reports TEchCrunch: "But as we've all learned from recent phone launches, 5G is currently more of a buzzword than game-changing technology. What's maybe more important here is that it may enable new C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle to Everything) solutions that will allow vehicles to communicate with each other and nearby smartphones -- even without a mobile network."   "On improving the computing power of the iX, necessary as cars become more sensor laden and will eventually be mobile computers themselves when autonomous driving eventually arrives, BMW says it has developed the iX to process 20 times the data volume of previous models. As a result, double the amount of data from vehicle sensors can be processed." says Wired: "Even though cooling grilles are not necessary on EVs, BMW's polarising large vertical kidney grille remains, standing prominent at the front of the car, but now is completely blanked off. It now houses cameras, radar and other sensors hidden behind a transparent surface. Other design elements include super-slim headlights, flush-fitted door openers, frameless side windows, a tailgate with no separation joints that extends across the whole of the rear. Inside is a panoramic glass roof stretching over all five seats"   And don't call it a grille, it's an intelligence panel.   "its reduced, uncluttered and clear design language further accentuates the interior’s character of refined luxury. a curved screen – made of a 12.3-inch informational display and 14.9-inch control display – spans across the dashboard. these displays take center stage as the controls are stripped down to its essentials. an innovative rocker switch gear selection and touch controlled surface subdivided by feeler bars, are positioned on the center console. multifunctional buttons feature sparingly on the hexagonal steering wheel – a first for the Group’s series-produced vehicles. its track-inspired contour improves ease of access as well as the driver’s view of the curved screen." writes designboom   And as per Forbes: Digital elements only surface when summoned in what BMW is calling “shy tech” through the intelligent personal assistant and integrated smart fabrics. While, reduced mechanical elements, discreet air vents, hidden speakers and the curved floating flat screen display add to the sense of calm inside. Finally, the iX comes replete with its own electric engine note, composed by the celebrated composer Hans Zimmer."   And I'll give the conclusion to PistonHeads.com: "Apparently the body and flat floor are much slipperier than they look, with a quoted drag coefficient of just 0.25. Wind noise is said to be very low as a result. Certainly, that’ll matter a lot in a car expected to handle motorway use as well as city driving. When it launches next year, the iX will be a significant part of the EV mix; let's just hope for BMW's sake that its rivals haven't taken the prospective range even further down the road by then."   https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/11/11/world-premiere-bmw-ix-with-500-miles-electric-range-and-500-hp/   https://www.yahoo.com/news/bmw-announces-ix-next-gen-130003526.html   https://www.wired.co.uk/article/bmw-ix-revealed   https://www.designboom.com/technology/electric-bmw-inext-future-of-mobility-nextgen-11-11-2020/   https://www.pistonheads.com/news/general-pistonheads/bmw-ix-unveiled-with-500hp-373-mile-range/43359     HYUNDAI WILL HAVE 10 ECO MODELS IN THE US BY END OF 2022 "The Kona Electric, Sonata Hybrid / Plug-In Hybrid, and the Nexo Fuel Cell are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Hyundai’s eco-friendly offerings in the United States. There’s much more to come between now and the end of 2022 as the company aims to extend its green portfolio to 10 models." reports Motor1: "The product roadmap shows hybrid and plug-in hybrid derivatives of the Elantra will join the larger electrified Sonata in the sedan segment. As for crossovers, the all-new Tucson and Santa Fe facelift are both getting HEV and PHEV treatments, and chances are the Kona Electric facelift unveiled today in Europe is heading to North America. Interestingly, the product roadmap doesn’t show the Ioniq Hybrid / Plug-In Hybrid / Electric trio, but it does tease the future Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.The Ioniq is now technically a Hyundai sub-brand and will eventually grow to include an Ioniq 7 SUV earmarked for an early 2024 release. All will ride on a newly developed Electric Global Modular Platform promising “fast charging capability and plentiful driving range.”"   https://www.motor1.com/news/453737/2022-hyundai-10-eco-models/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news   HYUNDAI UNVEILS THE NEW KONA ELECTRIC From the Press Release: "The front with the new-look closed grille features a pure and clean design. This modern look is further enhanced by the new LED Daytime Running Lights, which emphasise the car’s wide stance. The front is complemented by an asymmetric charging port, a feature unique to the Kona Electric which makes a strong statement about driving electric. The new Kona Electric is 25 millimetres longer than the previous version. This ensures it has a dynamic appearance combined with a strong visual stance." "For the first time, the new Kona Electric is equipped with a 10.25-inch digital cluster, while an optional 10.25-inch AVN screen is carried over from the last update. New Kona Electric customers can enjoy the new Bluelink® upgrade, which allows them to control their car with their smartphone or voice to make their drive more convenient and enjoyable. The app displays the vehicle’s range and battery state, as well as charging times, when plugged into different public or private charging points. Users can access an advanced battery management system in order to select charging times that best fit their schedule"     [NEW] Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) [NEW] Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) [NEW] Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA) [NEW] Safe Exit Warning (SEW) [NEW] Rear Seat Alert (RSA) Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection (FCA-Ped) Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go (SCC w/ S&G) Lane Following Assist (LFA) Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) Intelligent Speed Limit Warning (ISLW) Driver Attention Warning (DAW)   "However, under the surface some interesting changes might have happened. It seems that the Hyundai Kona Electric made in Europe not only gets its battery cells from LG Chem, but also from SK Innovation. At least it’s what was reported by some Korean media outlets when this model suffered from some battery fires. Both LG Chem and SK Innovation have supplied batteries for the Kona Electrics. According to industry officials, the 77,000 Kona Electrics under recall were made in Korea from 2018 to March this year." reports PushEVs: "SK Innovation is thought to have supplied batteries for 12,000 Kona Electric vehicles built at Hyundai Motor’s plant in the Czech Republic. These are not subject to the recall. This makes me think that currently the Hyundai Kona Electric no longer uses NCM 622 battery cells, instead it gets NCM 712 cells from LG Chem and NCM 811 cells from SK Innovation."   https://pushevs.com/2020/11/11/hyundai-unveils-the-new-kona-electric/   NEW 82KWH BATTERY PACKS CONFIRMED IN LATEST TESLA MODEL 3 BUILDS "it appears as though Tesla was also able to increase the range in the LR and Performance variants by also increasing the size of the battery packs. According to a user on the tff-forum, a customer in Europe waiting for his LR Model 3 delivery has received his registration information, where it shows a new 82kWh battery." notes DriveTEslaCAnada: "The new battery pack is about a 4% increase from the previous generation 78kWh batteries. That number lines up pretty well with the news we reported on earlier this year that Panasonic had been able to increase the energy density of its existing cells by 5%. The first deliveries of the refresh Model 3 have already begun in both Canada and the US, but so far has been limited to the Standard Range Plus (SR+).  Hopefully we see some Long Range and Performance variants delivered soon to see how the new battery performs, as well as if there is a change in charging speed."   https://driveteslacanada.ca/model-3/new-82kwh-battery-packs-confirmed-in-latest-tesla-model-3-builds/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-82kwh-battery-packs-confirmed-in-latest-tesla-model-3-builds   VOLKSWAGEN BREAKS GROUND ON US LAB FOR DEVELOPING, TESTING OF EV BATTERIES "Volkswagen of America marked the start of construction of its Battery Engineering Lab at its Chattanooga Engineering and Planning Center. The approximately $22-million facility will test and validate electric vehicle cells and battery packs for the North American region." says Green Car Congress: "The new lab will join Volkswagen Chattanooga’s under-construction 564,000 square-foot electric vehicle production expansion and 198,000 square-foot battery pack assembly facility to form Volkswagen’s hub for EV production and engineering in the region. Volkswagen will test and optimize Georgia-manufactured battery cells at the new lab. This testing will include batteries for the Volkswagen ID.4 all-electric SUV, scheduled to begin US production in 2022."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/11/20201111-vwlab.html   VOLVO TRUCKS TO GO BATTERY ELECTRIC, HYDROGEN FUEL CELL BY 2025 "Last week, Volvo Trucks announced that its full range of heavy duty trucks and haulers would be available with battery-electric drive trains as early as next year. The move is seen as a massive step towards eliminating fossil-fuel use throughout Europe, and a realization of Volvo’s commitment to be a fully “climate-neutral” company by 2040." says CleanTechnica: "Volvo Trucks is currently running real-world tests of battery-electric Volvo FH, Volvo FM, and Volvo FMX model heavy duty trucks and semis, as well as the more familiar (to US eyes, anyway) Mack-branded versions of these trucks.  This news comes hot on the heels of Volvo Trucks’ announcement that it is buying 50% of Daimler Trucks’ hydrogen fuel cell business, and seems to indicate that the company is well beyond the exploratory phases of transitioning towards zero-emission vehicles."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/11/10/full-line-of-volvo-trucks-to-go-battery-electric-hydrogen-fuel-cell-by-2025/   RESEARCHERS SHOW CHARGING STATIONS VULNERABLE TO LOW-COST HACKING "Researchers at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) have demonstrated security vulnerabilities in the most common electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment, proving it is possible for hackers to disrupt charging using low-cost hardware and software." reports UtilityDive: "SwRI said it was able to perform three manipulations: limiting charge rates, blocking a vehicle from charging, and overcharging its battery. The vulnerabilities are concerning, but unlikely to slow EV adoption rates in the near term, according to experts. The project was designed to identify potential threats in common charging hardware as widespread EV adoption nears and more charging locations are developed.
