Finding and onboarding a new Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) is hard. During the search, an organization's marketing efforts are often left in limbo. Hiring an interim CMO (or partial CMO) can help organizations bridge the gap and make the transition smoother. FinThrive, a company that offers revenue management solutions to healthcare organizations, brought in Alan Gonsenhauser as an interim CMO, but they did something unexpected. They kept him as an executive coach after they found their permanent CMO. The company and the executives involved could not be happier. One of my favorite HITMC Awards is the HITMC Rising Star award. I love how it recognizes someone who is new to healthcare, but in many cases has marketing and PR experience in other industries. This often means that the winner is bringing in some outside knowledge and perspective that can benefit healthcare. This was definitely the case with 2022 HITMC Rising Star Award Winner, Olivia Schlabach who works as Associate Vice President at FINN Partners. As you probably inferred from the title, Schlabach worked in marketing at Nascar before making the switch to healthcare. When we sat down with her for the video interview below, we asked her what it was like going from marketing in Nascar to healthcare. She highlighted how many core principles are the same and that plenty of things she did in Nascar were transferrable to healthcare. EP230: The Best Way to Improve Patient Outcomes and Satisfaction and Reduce Burnout, With John Lynn, Founder of Healthcare Scene, Expo.Health, and HITMC

Relentless Health Value

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2019 30:42

Today I’m talking with John Lynn, founder of Healthcare Scene as well as two conferences, Expo.Health and HITMC. If I was going to frame out an overarching theme, I would suggest that it is this: Organizational culture eats strategy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Let’s consider the scope of this statement: Ambulatory patients spend about 84 minutes on average in clinic. Of those, 7-12 minutes are with a physician. Inpatient, I imagine, has probably an even greater ratio. So those 7-12 minutes are hypercritical, of course. I would never suggest anything that minimized the doctor-patient relationship. But how many times has a doctor’s patient grade gone down because of someone nasty at the front desk? All of the other individuals that a patient meets in the non-doctor portion of their visit, all of the moments that happen in that time frame, all of the care coordination that does or does not happen ... all these things have a significant and meaningful impact on not only the patient experience but also patient outcomes. So, how do you get the front desk and the back office and the middle office and anyone on the phone to recognize the importance to the mission of attaining the quadruple aim of health care? How do you get the janitorial staff to see their role as crucial in the prevention of health care–associated infections (HAIs)? The IT team to feel proud that they have helped with physician burnout by making the tech help doctors instead of slow them down? Or the finance team to consider the financial toxicity of their actions? Or the medical assistants to enter the correct blood pressure or whatever data so our predictive analytics actually work? The answer to all of these questions points back to strong leadership. It’s building a culture of love, as John Lynn puts it. He means aligning around a mission to do right by patients and give them the best care and outcomes that we can. Consider this, though: A culture of love can be within one organization, but it can also be cross-organizations. Peers come together and share their experiences and their best practices for the purpose of improving patient care. Then they can take their enthusiasm and passion back to their own organizations. Doing this disperses a culture; it promotes a way of thinking that connects day-to-day drudgery with an endpoint that we all can be proud of. I don’t think it’s controversial to say that establishing a real culture of love is the best way to achieve patient health in health care, a better patient experience, fewer burned out doctors and nurses, as well as other business results. If you’re interested in how all this connects to patient experience, by the way, listen to EP228 with Julie Rish. John Lynn is the founder of the HealthcareScene.com network, which currently consists of 10 blogs containing over 11,000 articles, with John having written over half of the articles himself. These electronic medical record– and health care IT–related articles have been viewed over 18 million times. John also manages HealthcareITCentral.com and HealthcareITToday.com, the leading career health IT job board and blog. He also organized the first-of-its-kind conference and community focused on marketing to health care: HealthITMarketingConference.com. Plus, he launched Health IT Expo, a conference focused on practical health care IT innovation. John is an adviser to multiple health care IT companies and a highly sought-after keynote speaker. Fraudulent doctor reviews are a real problem. Ted Chan experienced it first hand while trying to help a loved one find a doctor online. And that's exactly what Ted did when he launched CareDash in 2016. His goal was to create a healthcare provider directory and review site that was committed to transparency for both doctors and patients. Ted's idea has resonated and CareDash has grown from 10,000 unique patients visits per month in March of 2018 to over 1,000,000 today. John Lynn shares a wrap-up from last week’s Healthcare and IT Marketing Conference and describes what makes it so different from other healthcare conferences. Once upon a time, health IT and hospital marketers functioned on opposite sides of the spectrum, but the HITMC community is changing that. All that, plus the debut of a brand new segment where we keep it real. Thanks to Xpressdocs for helping us spread the awesome, yo! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this episode, we discuss the power of online communities like  #HCLDR, a new push for healthcare interoperability in Canada called Access 2022, and much more. Our guest is Colin Hung, CMO and editor at HealthcareScene.com, and founder of #HCLDR.   Online Communities:  #HCLDR is a weekly tweet chat (Tuesday's at 8:30 PM EST) that has been going strong for 7 years. It attracts an international audience of 150-200 people who generate 1,500-3,000 tweets and up to 12 million impressions. This community, plus others like #HITsm were a huge influence on my path in healthcare and Health IT. In fact, The #HCBiz Show! started as the #HCBiz tweet chat. These communities provide a surprisingly effective way to network and learn new ideas, and they lead long term relationships. Ultimately, they took me to Toronto for this interview.   Canada has national healthcare… and still struggles with interoperability!?!?  That's right! Interoperability is not magically “fixed” in a single payer system. Canada, just like pretty much everyone else in the world, struggles to get healthcare data where it needs to be. I won't get into that here, but you can hear all about why interop is challenging on last week's episode – The Path to Healthcare Interoperability – or read about it here. This is why Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) launched the ACCESS 2022 movement. Infoway helps to improve the health of Canadians by working with partners to accelerate the development, adoption and effective use of digital health solutions across Canada. And Access 2022 provided the backdrop for this #HCBiz interview. I drove up to Toronto on the day Colin was being filmed to help raise awareness for the Access 2022 movement. You can see the product of that in the video below – and you can even see this podcast being recorded around 1:33. I know… meta. https://youtu.be/BxIlHrhPwvQ   HITMC and Health IT Expo:  Colin and I also discuss the Healthcare and IT Marketing Conference or HITMC (happening right now in Boston!) and the Health IT Expo (July 31-Aug 2 also in Boston). I'll be headed to Boston for my first HITMC shortly after hitting publish on this post. Hit me up if you're there! And I highly recommend you check out the HealthIT Expo coming up on July 31-August 2. It's a practical conference that aims to send you home with actionable information – much like I always say on this show, things you can take home and put to work on Monday. Check out all of our coverage from last year's Health IT Expo here.   About Colin Hung:  Colin Hung is an award-winning marketing executive with more than a decade of healthcare and Health IT experience.
