Humanity, empathy, and respecting patient wishes are paramount when navigating the complexities of end-of-life care. In this episode of Straight Outta Health IT, Gil Bashe, Chair of Global Health and Purpose for FINN Partners, delves into these sensitive topics. Drawing from his unique background as a combat medic, ordained clergy member, and health innovation advocate, Gil discusses the crucial, yet often misunderstood, differences between palliative care, hospice care, and end-of-life planning. He clarifies that palliative care focuses on improving comfort and quality of life at any point during a serious illness, potentially alongside curative treatments. Hospice care, conversely, is typically reserved for the final stages, Gil explains, when the focus shifts entirely to comfort and dignity, often requiring additional medical support but tailored to the individual's needs and choices. Host Christopher Kunney shares poignant family experiences, grounding the conversation in real-life challenges. Together, they explore the emotional difficulties faced by patients, families, and even clinicians in initiating these necessary conversations and making decisions, highlighting the discomfort many doctors feel. Gil also strongly emphasizes the enduring importance of human connection, intuition, and empathy over purely technological solutions, urging listeners to prepare emotionally and spiritually, perhaps even through letters, alongside legal documents like living wills. Tune in and learn why understanding these distinctions and respecting a patient's final wishes are essential aspects of compassionate care!

Together in Travel Pre-registration form: https://form.typeform.com/to/eVF3u89X KEY TAKEAWAYS Resilience is crucial in both government and corporate sectors, as leaders often face numerous challenges and setbacks. Embracing failures and learning from them can lead to stronger leadership. Understanding the dynamics between government and the private sector is essential for effective advocacy in travel and tourism. Leaders must navigate the differing timeframes and priorities of both sectors to create meaningful partnerships. The travel and tourism industry must leverage data and AI to enhance operations and customer experiences. Leaders should take ownership of AI initiatives to drive innovation and efficiency within their organisations. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to the travel and tourism sector, representing 80% of the industry. Initiatives like "Together in Travel" aim to amplify their voices and provide resources for growth and resilience. As the travel and tourism sector grows, it is essential to prioritise sustainability and responsible growth. Leaders should advocate for practices that protect the environment and support local communities, ensuring a positive impact on society. Thomas Bagge of DCSA & Thomas Morris of FINN Partners talk about digitalization in container shipping; drivers & barriers to change; and progress & priorities. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [06.45] Introductions to today's guests and what they do. “DCSA aims to help digitalize and make container shipping more effective. We're open source and vendor neutral… and our members represent about 75% of the world's containerized capacity.” [10.13] An overview of DCSA's new state of the industry report: what it's about, why they commissioned it, and what they're aiming to achieve. “Decision makers are strongly advocating for more digital tools, more interoperability – they want to improve efficiency… So how do we convert these demands into firm commitments that will help drive digitalization forward?” [13.41] A closer look at the methodology and analytics that were used in the creation of the report. “We're excited. Given the amount of ground we've covered, and the amount of research we've done – we think it's one of the most comprehensive reports looking at digitalization within container shipping.” [17.35] The landscape of digitalization in container shipping, and the historic issues with data, visibility and interoperability. “There have been a lot of great initiatives and strides made in our industry… but we need to take the next steps. A lot of those previous digital initiatives were invented in siloes. So, the biggest issues we have today are a lack of data and interoperability.” [21.32] The current sentiment in the industry towards digital, and whether or not that sentiment was a surprise; and the impact being made by increasing standardization. “I was surprised by the level of manual interventions that we still see in the industry!” “86% of cargo owners said that digitalization is a tool that would help improve efficiency and process, and they see the opportunity – we saw cargo owners talk about customer satisfaction, operational costs, and competitive advantage.” [26.18] The key drivers and barriers to digitalization in the container shipping industry. “Cargo owners are ready to go, but two thirds said they need help and support. Some are fearful of legacy systems… and there's also some internal company resistance. We need to get the tech right, but businesses are made of people, and we need to bring them along on the journey as well.” [30.55] Industry progress, and supply chain stakeholders' priorities for further change. “We have a complex industry, there are many stakeholders – this is a problem of a whole ecosystem…. Removing the barriers to trade is in everybody's interest.” [36.51] Why sustainability has to be one of the industry's biggest priorities; how organizations are approaching increasingly stringent regulations and impending ESG deadlines; and how digitalization is going to make a difference. “The fuel transition is not something that's around the corner, we're going to have emissions for many years to come… but the industry can save up to 14% on fuel through collaboration and implementation of just-in-time standards – and that's work we can do today, we don't have to wait for 2040.” [39.23] What DCSA are currently working on to help address key industry priorities, and an example of how they helped a retailer save costs, standardize, and integrate quickly through effective digitalization. [41.05] How enhanced collaboration can help to accelerate the adoption of digital tools. “Almost a third of cargo owners talked about hesitancy to adopt new technology solutions before their peers or partners. It's a classic case of ‘who jumps first?'!” [43.40] DCSA's vision for the future of container shipping, and how the industry is going to continue to evolve. On this episode we hear from Debbie. She has been in the travel industry since she was 16 years old and that was with British Airways. In 1995 she started her own PR agency in hospitality and travel, which she then sold to FINN Partners six years ago. She now heads up the travel team for FINN Partners globally. Reflecting on her first business she started as a promotion's agency, she recalls that she really had no fear, one of the benefits of being young. She talks about how when she started her PR agency, it was all about the relationships you had with the media and now with great content and the right channels there is so much more you can do. What I also particularly admired from her story is her transition from entrepreneur back to employee, when she sold her business and her reasoning behind it as she went into this next phase of her life. One of her biggest learnings she shared was protecting your network and being kind to people.

Mary Fastenau, senior partner at Anthology Marketing Group, fondly recalls the Internet's early digital marketing potential and the growth of what is now the state's largest integrated marketing and communications agency. “It's the beauty of what's going on in digital, even today, is that … you can test, you can look and you can make sure that your hypothesis, even if they're very well researched, that they are actually relating to real people,” she says. Starr Siegle became Anthology Marketing Group in 2007. Today, the agency is part of Finn Partners, a global marketing and communications firm, and represents clients like Hawai‘i Pacific Health, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, Hawaiian Telcom and ‘Iolani School.

Amy Terpeluk leads the CSR & Social Impact Practice at FINN Partners, a values-based marketing and communications agency. FINN Partners helps brands share their stories in ways that drive business value and make a positive impact in the world. Amy has created initiatives in education, DEI, public health, economic inequality, sustainability, climate change, and veterans' well-being. Amy also helped launch the NO MORE Foundation, a global campaign galvanizing greater awareness to end domestic and sexual violence and continues to serve on its board of directors. In this episode we discuss: ● The process FINN Partners uses to help clients assess the potential risks and rewards of publicly taking a stance on an issue ● The importance of authenticity and transparency in corporate communications ● The impact of company and employee value alignment Key Takeaways: ● Authenticity is an inside job—for a person and for a company. It means being clear on your values and acting in alignment with them. It means standing up for what you believe in, as well as standing up for yourself. It means staying true to your values, regardless of the pressures you are under to act otherwise. ● One litmus test for authenticity is to ensure that what your company says externally is in alignment with how your company shows up internally (i.e. how your company treats its employees). For example, if your company says they stand behind equality externally, make sure they stand behind equality internally. Ask questions. Here are two examples: has your company ensured that pay and benefits are equal across gender and race within each salary level; has your company instituted hiring practices to remove cognitive bias? ● When a company has strong values, it's easier to navigate an unexpected PR crisis. When values are referred back to habitually, and used in daily decision making, the shared knowledge of what decisions are right for your company grows across the organization. That means, when hard decisions come your way (as they inevitably will) deciding what to do becomes a little less hard. Values make it easier to land on a clear direction even in the middle of a storm. One classic example of values in action is the Tylonal recall of 1982, after capsules laced with cyanide killed 7 people in Chicago. The Johnson & Johnson CEO at the time, James Burke, credited the Johnson & Johnson Credo—their company value statement—to helping navigate the crisis, and giving him “the ammunition to persuade shareholders and others to spend the $100 million on the recall. A move that would name him as one of history's most outstanding CEO's. (Read more on that crisis here. Let's be honest - if you don't know who or what Jack Daniel's is, you probably aren't old enough to listen to this podcast. ANYWAY - I'm thrilled to be joined by Lexie Phillips, Assistant Distiller. Lexie is not only the first woman in this position, she's also an accomplished distiller and taster in her own right with a background in agriculture. Oh, and she led the barrel pick that resulted in TWO barrels for podcast listeners! Lexie and I talk the parts of Jack that you don't always hear about, including the rye, the single malt, how Jack became Jack, and how one of the world's largest distilleries is managing to put out innovative (and good!) releases multiple times per year. I can't tell you how excited I was to get this podcast in the books. Thank you to Lexie and the entire Jack Daniel's and FINN Partners group for making this happen. Special shout out to Hillary, without whom none of this was possible. ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! The $25 tier - for people who really want to propel the pod and website forward - will have the same benefits as the $5 tier plus right of first refusal to join me on future barrel picks, access to bottles I'm sent to taste and review, and more.
