Creating a More Inclusive Space for Hardcore Athletes with Laurie Porsch In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with Laurie Porsch, fitness instructor, Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner at BETA Academy, and owner of Liberation Barbell Club.Laurie was inspired to start Liberation Barbell out of a desire to be part of a community that is serious about strength and fitness while being down-to-earth and inclusive at the same time. She wanted to create an environment that was particularly welcoming to women and members of the LGBTQ community, who may not usually feel completely at home at many traditional hardcore gyms. The Liberation Barbell community lives by a simple code of conduct: Create a safe space, don’t make anybody feel unwelcome, assume good intent, and if you make a mistake, apologize and amend your behavior. The basis for this code of conduct, as well as the foundation of the gym and community, is dignity, best expressed by Donna Hick’s work and her “Ten Elements of Dignity”.Listen in and hear why Laurie is motivated to provide a safe space for anyone who wants to get involved in strength training, how Liberation Barbell is coping amid the pandemic, and how to thrive as a woman in the powerlifting or BJJ world. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: ● [01:34] Laurie’s vision for Liberation Barbell● [05:05] The elements of dignity ● [09:50] Reopening the gym, and new classes to expect● [13:50] Laurie’s goals post-COVID-19● [20:06] Laurie’s powerlifting career● [25:00] How Laurie fell in love with Brazilian jiu-jitsu● [29:04] Being a women in the BJJ world● [33:52] Laurie’s advice for women thinking about taking up barbell training or BJJMemorable Quotes:“Dignity and respect are different. Dignity is inherent—everybody has the same amount. It is not earned, whereas respect has to be earned.”“Come as you are, be who you want to be, and lift heavy shit. That is literally all we advocate.”“Whatever you enjoy doing for fitness, that’s what you should do, because if you don’t like it, you’re not going to do it.”“Don’t be afraid to try barbell training or BJJ. Find a place where you feel comfortable, find a trainer that you feel comfortable with, and explore it.”“There’s nothing in this world, to an extent, that being stronger doesn’t make easier.”Connect with Laurie on Instagram @lauriebjjConnect with Stacy Burr on Instagram @bamaburrLearn more about Liberation Barbell Club at LiberationBarbellClub.com and follow them on Instagram @liberationbarbellclub

I’m honored to share this Episode #38 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast with someone who even my children were excited I was interviewing… best-selling, award-winning, children’s recording artist Laurie Berkner. Widely recognized as the uncrowned queen of children’s music, Laurie’s albums, released on her own label Two Tomatoes, have been best sellers beloved by children and adults alike. Her debut DVD, which went quadruple platinum, was the first-ever indie children’s music DVD to enter Billboard’s Top Music Video chart at #1. Laurie’s twelfth album, Laurie Berkner: the Dance Remixes, was released in September 2017. A longtime fixture on TV’s Nick Jr. and Sprout channels, Laurie’s music videos now appear regularly on NBCUniversal’s Universal Kids channel. And she’s ventured into new creative endeavors, writing the music and lyrics for three Off-Broadway children’s musicals produced by New York City Children’s Theater and publishing a series of Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, including Pillowland, which has become my son Jacob’s story and song of choice at bedtime. Laurie’s music bridges a divide between parents and their children and invites connection, joy and meaning. In our conversation, I was compelled by the stories Laurie shared about families whose children have cancer and listen to her music for comfort in the hospital or whose children have autism and their first words were the names of Laurie’s songs. For her, bringing opportunities for connection and making space for creative expression is her true mission and has begun to take many forms. I was fascinated to learn about the unplanned path that brought her from preschool teacher to children’s musician, and how the tenets that inform her music training program, to stop talking and “put it in the music,” to let children express themselves in their own voice, and to follow children’s rhythm and leadership are powerful metaphors for parenthood and life. I loved every moment of this conversation, but especially the end, where Laurie recounted a recent E.P.I.C. snapshot moment with her own daughter and then closed us out with her guitar in hand singing my favorite song of hers, “Moon, Moon, Moon.” I felt so enriched by this conversation, and following Laurie’s guidance, I’m committed to creating more space for emotion, connection, play and music with my children. But, there’s also something else. The day after I recorded this episode and had the honor of hearing Laurie sing about the moon, I took in the power of the Lunar Eclipse and the rare Blue Moon, sending an email to Laurie to note the synchronicity of it all. I was struck again to learn that as I release this episode, Dr. Roz, the woman beautifully honored in the dedication for this episode, would have celebrated her birthday this week, if she were still alive today. So, I also leave this experience with renewed faith in ripple effects beyond what we first imagine and a reverence for following the rhythm in our lives, if we make the space to listen. This episode dedicated by: Denise W. Barreto, Relationships Matter Now, LLC www.relationshipsmatternow.com Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Topics Discussed in this Episode: What I was doing when I stopped everything to find Laurie’s contact information and invite her to come onto the podcast The influence Laurie’s driven working mother had on instilling the belief that Laurie could create a meaningful career Laurie’s true life mission which has nothing specifically to do with music or children The unplanned path that led Laurie to become a children’s musician and the new forms that Laurie’s creativity has taken her in recent years Laurie’s music mentor, Ruth Alperson and how her advice shaped how Laurie engages children with music What happened in the preschool classroom that led to the creation of her first song, “We are the Dinosaurs” Laurie’s key tenets for children’s music like “Sing it Don’t Say It,” and “Singing in a Child’s Voice,” and how that informed a music training program she created to help children feel ownership and leadership How what we “create” are gifts to the world and the unexpected ripple effects that Laurie’s music has had on families, especially families with children who are ill or have special needs The importance of following rhythm in many forms How the E.P.I.C. Guideposts show up in Laurie’s life and how she is on a quest to bring more of the “I,” investment in herself, through meditation, exercise and more. The importance of making space for connection with our children, managing our use of screens, and the very special family time Laurie has established with her family every night How Laurie’s E.P.I.C. Snapshot moment with her own daughter reflected back everything Laurie has sought to create through her music for others This Week’s Challenge: Make space for connection and music with your own children. Use music in your daily routine by turning an ordinary task with your child into a song. Remember to: Sing it, don’t say it Incorporate your children’s own sense of internal rhythm into the music Bring in playfulness Resources Mentioned in this Episode: Dalcroze Eurhythmics – A music curriculum that involves movement Two Tomatoes Records – Laurie’s record label The Music In Me – Laurie’s teacher training program and signature music classes for children 12 months to 4 years We Are The Dinosaurs – One of the first songs made by Laurie Moon Moon Moon – Our favorite song, sung live in this episode Pillowland – My son Jacob’s story and song of choice at bedtime The Blue Moon Lunar Eclipse – Images of the Blue Moon Lunar Eclipse, which synchronistically took place shortly after I recorded my episode with Laurie Announcements: Spring into Your E.P.I.C. Ever heard of sex magick? It doesn't involve cutting up body parts and making it whole again, disappearing sex partners after being bondaged, or sex toys being pulled out of a hat. It's a lot more meaningful than that. I've invited someone who can educate us better about what sex magick is all about. I personally am very interested in sex magick for some time now and I'm stoked to have someone to geek out with. Laurie Handlers is a sex and happiness coach, radio host, movie producer, actor, and the best-selling author of the book Sex and Happiness. She joins us to provide an introduction to sex magick - with more than 2 decades worth of experience in this field and I think she's one of the best source out there. Laurie and I talked about everything from her workshops, personal beliefs, a phenomenon called the little death, immortality, to George W. Bush. There's a lot that we deep-dived into including: The one thing that the Bush administration did right and how it impacted her life (03:43). What sex magic is, and how it can help you manifest your intentions one orgasm at a time (06:52). The reason why sexual energy is so powerful (10:19). How Laurie fuses atheism, immortalism, sex magick, and science to create the life she wants (14:01; 19:23) Our theory on the concept of deity as religions' attempt to control people and mankind's refusal to take responsibility for their lives (15:47) Dissecting our personal beliefs and how a Simon and Garfunkel song describes the human journey (25:11). What solo sex magick is and how to do it (31:17). Insights on partner sex magick practice, energetic orgasms and ejaculating (36:16). How to use bodily fluids as elixirs and objects of manifestation (40:41). The types of success people were able to attract and manifest through her sex magick workshops (42:46) Practicing sex magick and how it impacts our lives (46:02). There's so much more to uncover, and really, we were just edging on our conversation. Unfortunately, time is limited but we'll try to connect again to get down and dirty on even more sex magick. If you want more information about sex magick, reach out to Laurie via her website, Butterfly Workshops. You can also follow her on YouTube and Facebook for resources and updates. “Resilience is the one thing that golf beats into you, and if you’re not careful it will beat it out of you.” – Laurie Canter Laurie Canter didn’t pick up a golf club until he was 14 years old. Prior to that, he was a talented junior tennis player, competing at a high enough level for Avon County that his team came across Andy Murray in under-14s. He quickly developed a passion for golf which usurped his interest in tennis, though, a decision which proved wise. As an amateur, Laurie boasted a handicap of +5, and won both the South African Amateur Championships and the Spanish Amateur Championships. These successes helped him to become the fifth ranked amateur golfer in the world, and the best amateur golfer in the United Kingdom. In 2010 he played in the Open Championship at the home of golf, St. Andrews. He struggled, failing to make the cut, but overcame the disappointment to turn pro the following year. This year, he returned to the Open Championship for the first time since 2010, putting in an impressive showing at Royal Birkdale to finish in a tie for 37th place, just a shot behind Jason Day and Bubba Watson, and ahead of names including world number 1 Dustin Johnson, and Ernie Els. In this episode, Laurie talks to Chris about his development into a professional golfer in recent years. He discusses life on tour in detail, many of his practice techniques and on-course routines, and what separates the best players on tour from the rest of the pack. Laurie Meacham, Manager of Customer Commitment and Social Media at JetBlue Airways, has to live up to a tough standard which is immortalized in JetBlue’s mission statement: To Inspire Humanity. But she and her social care team – called crewmembers – are doing just that, working 24/7 to respond to passengers with a goal of just a 10-minute response time. Their work goes beyond customer service, answering all sorts of questions about planes, airports, and other aeronautical trivia. “It’s all part of delivering an amazing customer experience,” she says. Laurie took time out of her busy schedule to speak with me and Dan Moriarty for Episode 2 of the Focus on Customer Service Podcast. Some of the most quotable moments of this episode include: • “If we’re doing it right, any interaction you have with a JetBlue crewmember will be very similar… our goal is to deliver a consistent experience.” • “Our goal is to always know the answer or be able to find the answer.” • “We’ve really infused our brand’s personality through social and that’s what differentiates us.” • “We want you to be able to see who JetBlue is from looking through the @JetBlue Twitter feed.” • “Listen to your customers… and be true to YOUR brand.” Here are the highlights of Episode 2 and where to find them: (2:05) JetBlue’s approach to customer service, and the role it plays within the company (3:13) How JetBlue’s culture of service translates to social media (4:16) Laurie’s role and the team structure, plus what makes a good social care “crewmember” (7:10) How Laurie trains the team and educates them about JetBlue (8:33) Why the airline industry just might be social media’s “sweet spot” and what JetBlue does to differentiate itself in a crowded space (12:28) Response time expectations (14:28) Connecting social media to a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system (16:22) Laurie’s advice for those starting out in social care (17:26) A memorable social media encounter with a passenger, which you won’t want to miss!
