I've got science on my side. 85 years of science... and data collection from one of the longest-running studies of human life ever conducted. Begun in 1938, The Harvard Study of Adult Development has been studying and detailing the lives of over 2000 people to determine the key components of happiness. When was the last time that you took pride is something that was brand new to you? Perhaps it was a new vehicle, house, watch or piece of furniture.    Chances are, over time, the pride that you once took in that new object probably began to fade away.   The reason for this is because of something called hedonic adaptation.   It turns out that when good things happen in our lives, we have a spike in our appreciation for those good things. The mind works in mysterious ways, and sometimes it gets things wrong. In this mini-series, we explore how our biases and misinformation can hinder our happiness. In today's episode, we discuss perceptual adaptation.       Transcript:   Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day,  through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.    I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I was listening to the Yale happiness course by Dr. Laurie Santos and she mentioned how our minds are built to get used to stuff, she used the example of being in a dark room and when you walk out into the light, it's like, oh my gosh, the brightest day of your life. Your eyes can't take it.  We got used to the dark and we adjusted.  This phenomenon is called Perceptual Adaptation.    And this is the same in the context of Hedonic Adaptation.  We've talked about this before, you can check out episodes 31, 34, 36, or 128.  This is the concept that we get used to what makes us happy.  When we get the pay raise, we are happy and then we get used to that level of income and soon, we want more.  It's also called the Hedonic treadmill.     Dr. Santos also enlightens us with a study on marriage.  Which I found fascinating.  It's this idea that when you get married, everything is awesome and you are full of all of the happiness and then, two years into the marriage, you are, well, just … married.  It's this idea that you've gotten pretty used to your partner over the past two years and the excitement has worn off.  Fascinating, right?    The scientist Dan Gilbert wrote a book called Stumbling on Happiness and he says “Wonderful things are especially wonderful the first time they happen, but their wonderfulness wanes with repetition.”    But this is sad, right?  We want to maintain the wonderfulness, but our brains are just not wired this way. We tend to reflect on certain things in the past as being better, aka “the old good days”. That reflection typically revolves around experiencing things a certain way that we no longer can now. An example is one I've been thinking about lately: how much has changed since the pandemic. Things I had once taken for granted, such as going out to eat or making vacation plans aren't as easy or certain anymore. As I reminisced a little, I was reminded of a technique involving reflecting on current times as being the good old days. This technique involves imagining your future self thinking back on today. And it is a powerful method for focusing on what you might miss in the future if it were (or when it is) gone. This exercise harkens to both Hedonic Adaptation and the Stoic Philosophy of viewing events and processing emotion.  —L. Frank BaumThe topic of this episode is happiness and hedonic adaptation, otherwise known as the hedonic treadmill. Hedonic adaptation is a phenomenon of our psychology and physiology that keeps us at a stable level of happiness over time. This adaptation is like an immune system that desensitizes us in relation to negative and positive experiences, making us continually find our happiness baseline. The Hedonic Treadmill The concept of hedonic adaptation dates back to a 1971 paper by Philip Brickman and Donald T. Campbell called "Hedonic Relativism and Planning the Good Society", and it was made even more famous in a 1978 study called "Lottery Winners and Accident Victims: Is Happiness Relative?" The study compared lottery winners and paraplegics with a control group to show that both groups eventually adjusted and returned to a baseline of happiness. The hedonic treadmill, or happiness treadmill, is named as such because no matter how much you chase happiness and increase it in the short term, you end up in the same place continually chasing. The hedonic pathways in our brains become desensitized to pleasurable things that we encounter regularly. So after big life events like winning the lottery, getting a job promotion, getting married, etc, we will tend to settle back to our happiness set point. The Meaning of Happiness Aside from the science of hedonic adaptation, we also talked about the philosophy of happiness and whether it is a good goal in life. How is happiness different from words like joy, pleasure, tranquility, peacefulness, excitement, satisfaction, content, cheerful, or well-being? Is happiness something we get from the external world or does it come from within? Do we seek happiness or are we really running away from suffering? And what is the difference between a meaningful life and a happy life? Today we are talking about the Hedonic Adaptation Prevention (HAP) method, this is the tool to combat your happiness returning to baseline.      Transcript:   Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day,  through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.    I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and today we are talking about the Hedonic Adaptation Prevention (HAP) method. I was recently reading about this concept in Sonya Lyubomirsky's update article about her Happiness Pie Chart; I have attached the link in the show notes if you are interested.    Before diving into HAP, let's take a quick moment to review what hedonic adaptation is. Hedonic adaptation is the natural process where heightened happiness due to some new circumstance inevitably loses its shine, and your happiness levels return to where they were before the change occurred.    For example, the change could be getting married, buying a new car, moving to a new place, etc. When these positive changes occur, you get a boost in happiness. Then, over time, you get used to this new circumstance, it becomes the new status quo, and it no longer initiates that happiness boost.    That seems unfair! Why shouldn't we continue to get happiness from a positive change in our lives? Well, that's where HAP comes in. The HAP theory assumes that hedonic adaptation is not inevitable as long as you continue to interact with the new circumstance in a positive way that continues to boost your happiness.    It is kind of like feeding a fire. If you don't add anything to it, it will burn out. You have to keep adding in resources for it to be a big, bright, pretty flame.    In the update, two routes are given to keep that fire of happiness going. The first route is a button-up technique. This requires you to pursue positive emotions, both varied and sometimes surprising. For example, this would be like taking regular walks in your new neighborhood if you switched homes and even holding the occasional dinner party.    The second route is a top-down method that involves avoiding the tempting thoughts of bigger and better. Going back to that new house example, the happy new homeowner should continue appreciating their new home and all its features rather than dreaming ahead to the next house with even bigger and better features. Why? Well, doing so diminishes the happy thoughts about your current home…thus, making the happiness fade faster.    Now, will the HAP method work forever? Probably not. BUT, you can get your biggest happiness bang for your buck by using this theory.
