Have you ever wondered why some people can be haunted by a sink full of dirty dishes - and others walk right past it without even noticing it? Is it simply a matter of habits? Or does personal play a bigger part than we give it credit for? In this episode Laurie Palau from SimplyBOrganized.com shares how she uses the Enneagram personality test to help her clients find ways to get organized based on their unique personalities. With greater awareness of unconscious motivators and tendencies, we can know ahead of time how to set ourselves up for success - and give ourselves grace for the ways that organization might not exactly come naturally. And because I know you'll want this recap, I'm going to share the 9 Enneagram personality types here: Type 1: The Reformer (perfectionistic and self-controlled) Type 2: The Helper (Caring, people-pleasing) Type 3: The Achiever (Success-oriented, driven) Type 4: The Individualist (Creative, sensitive) Type 5: The Investigator (Intense, cerebral) Type 6: The Loyalist (Committed, responsible) Type 7: The Enthusiast (Fun-loving, spontaneous) Type 8: The Challenger (Decisive, confrontational) Type 9: The Peacemaker (Easygoing, agreeable) If you're anything like me, you're immediately starting to identify not only your own type, but the types you see in your family and other close relationships. But hold up - before you start trying to crack the code on everyone else, Laurie recommends we first learn more about how the enneagram personality test can help us understand ourselves. Consistent with our Life Organized membership strategy, we are in a much better position to help others when we have first organized our own clutter - including the unfair ways we might be judging ourselves. So what do we DO about all of this? Get to know your personality type. Read through the different Enneagram types and see what feels like a fit. (Laurie finds that this can be more effective than taking a test.) Get even more clarity by asking yourself if you make decisions based on thought, feeling, or action. Are you a neat freak or are you clutter-blind? Does a sink full of dishes ever bother you or do you just pass by it as if you didn't even see it? You see, there's a connection between people's motivation based on their Enneagram type and how they respond to clutter, whether they are super controlling and averse to clutter, or clutter blind. In this episode, I'm joined by Laurie Palau, the founder of Simply B Organized, and she can help you clear the clutter for good. Laurie is also the host of the top-rated podcast This Organized Life and the author of the book “Hot Mess.” Laurie has been studying the psychology of clutter for several years and has recently been diving into how she can use the knowledge from the Enneagram to help people clear their clutter. Today, we're going to do an overview of all nine Enneagram types, the common pitfalls, and the things that people can do when it comes to clutter and organizing their homes and their lives. Knowing your Enneagram type can be extremely useful when it comes to organizing stuff around your house and your life – whether we're talking about the material/physical clutter, emotional clutter, or calendar clutter. Laurie points out that it's not about labeling people or labeling things, but it's important to be able to provide language where you can articulate and communicate what you do. Because a lot of times, we get frustrated with things since we don't have the language to articulate them. In this episode, you will hear: What is an Enneagram? Looking at the psychology of clutter The Enneagram image and its Christian roots Developing grace and empathy for other people How the Enneagram impacts your life How it allows you to understand other people better An overview of the nine types Subscribe and Review Have you subscribed to our podcast? There is one game that I am sure that all moms have played. That game is the comparison game. You know when you look at another mom and think that she is better than you because she is skinner than you and makes perfect Pinterest-worthy lunches every day for her kids. Or maybe it is subtle, like when you're at work and think that Becky's house must be so much cleaner than yours because her desk is always organized. Those comparison thoughts mess with us all.So what do you do when you are comparing and feel like you don't measure up?First, listen to this episode with my guest Laurie from This ORGANIZED Life. She shares:Her experience with why moms compare themselves and begin to feel like they don't measure upPractical tips to help get unstuck when you feel like you don't measure upUnderlying issues that we may have when we feel like we don't measure up.Are you ready to change the narrative and start feeling empowered? Getting organized can be especially challenging for neurodiverse people. Sometimes it seems as if our environments fall in either one of two extremes—everything neatly in place or everything in total chaos. It's like a battle of the OCD versus the ADD. But one woman's clutter might be another woman's “I'm okay with this!” We all have a unique pain point when it comes to organization and time management. Can't we slide along the spectrum instead of living in the extremes? How do we create a functional environment for ourselves within all of our stuff—one that reduces stress and overwhelm, and fosters productivity? And can we teach our kids to do the same? This week on the podcast, my guest is a fellow podcaster, author, and clutter expert Laurie Palau. With neurodiversity in her own family, Laurie has figured out a way to meet adults and kids where they are, by giving them strategies to tackle their unique issues with all types of clutter—both tangible and intangible. Clutter is really a symptom of something bigger, Laurie says. If we determine “the why of clutter,” we can take actionable steps to make our lives simpler and easier. Warning: You may have to dive deep into some emotions, like guilt and fear. But I know you can do it. If just the idea of getting organized freaks you out, listen in to our conversation for practical, tactical advice on where to get started. And for ways to communicate with your kids to help them manage their clutter too. (You'll never tell your kid to “go clean your room” the same way again!) If you listened to my prior episode with Courtney Carver of Be More with Less, you know that I'm an aspiring minimalist. A minimalist is a person that thinks about what they bring into work and life. Instead of having or doing all the things, they purposely remove things that no longer serve them. You might be wondering, how does this impact my work? She also hosts This ORGANIZED Life, a weekly podcast where Laurie chats with awesome guests about life, work, parenting, and the role that organization has in their lives. Hi Friends! I hope you’re enjoying our Behind the Scenes series of Simply B Organized. Today I’m pulling back the curtain of what you’re listening to right here, This ORGANIZED Life Podcast! Joining me today as my co-host is my incredible podcast producer, Don Jackson of the Raven Media Group. When I decided to launch a podcast in January of 2017, I had no clue of what I was doing! I knew that there was a lot on the technical side with editing and production, so I immediately outsourced that part to an expert. What I didn’t know was all of the work required to make a successful show happen-and get listeners week after week.(It’s probably a good thing that I was clueless, because if I had known how much of my time would be spent working on this show, I more than likely would not have jumped in! ) During our conversation we talked about all of the moving parts including: Research, Scheduling Logistics, Content Creation and Marketing. We specifically dive into: How we find and book guests How we come up with topics Putting together a content calendar Our recording schedule (ie: how often and when we record) The prep that goes into each interview What happens during the actual recording What happens after the recording is done The process of going from pre to post production Show notes: What are they? Why do we need them? Promoting each episode once it gets released The Value of Ratings & Reviews How we connect with our listeners and why that is important I am here to tell you with 100% transparency that I fell in love with podcasting, almost from the start. It’s a lot of work, but I love connecting with incredible folks, while sharing my life and knowledge with you week after week. I encourage anyone who is interested in the podcasting world to listen to this episode, so feel free to share with a friend! Hi friends! We are kicking off a new series this month called “Behind the Scenes” where each week we are going to peel back the curtain and talk about what goes into the different aspects of Simply B Organized. Today I am joined by one of my longtime friends and SBO team members Courtney Greisman. Courtney joined the SBO team back in 2013 and has held the title of social media manager to partner promoter (my personal favorite!) She helps me run our SBO community -which is our network of Professional Organizers from different cities around the world. Our partner program has 2 distinct purposes: It allows me to offer trusted, SBO endorsed referrals to you or your loved ones-regardless of where you live. It gives me the opportunity to support other professional organizers grow their businesses. From group and individual mentorship, to brand exposure, and a complete resource library dedicated to helping remove the guesswork on running a business. Since its inception in 2017, the SBO Partner Program has taken a primary focus within the umbrella of our service offerings. I am equally passionate about helping professional organizers with the business side of the business, as I am about organizing a pantry! Running different divisions within a company requires a lot of time and attention, and I cannot do it alone. Courtney has been an integral part of the SBO Partner Program from the start, which is why I invited her to share the inside scoop with all of you. During our conversation we talk about: The detailed process that goes into how we source potential partners How the program has grown and evolved over the past few years What she’s learned from watching and working with each one of our partners If you are a Professional Organizer (or thinking about becoming one) and looking to learn more about the SBO Partner Program, we’d love to hear from you. Laurie Palau knows a few things about clutter. The Owner of Simply B Organized, podcast host of This Organized Life and Author of Hot Mess: A Practical Guide for Getting Organized shares her theory on clutter - "Clutter isn't limited to what you see on the outside it's about how it makes you feel on the inside." Laurie shares her theory on types of clutter and what they mean: physical clutter, emotional clutter, and calendar clutter. She explains that once you can identify the type of clutter you can start to eliminate it from your life.Kids have issues with clutter, too, and their handling (or lack of handing it) can cause family rift and stress. We talk about what can cause kid clutter and tips on how to solve it. Laurie shares her experience with her own children and we discuss a special episode from her podcast, This Organized Life, where her daughter is the guest (episode 138). Raise your hand if you've ever felt like a hot mess. Okay, we're not going to out you like that. But just know, we've all been there. It can be hard to get organized - and stay organized! Luckily, there's help available to you... starting with this here podcast! We spoke with organization expert Laurie Palau of Simply B Organized about how to overcome those roadblocks to keeping tidy. Laurie has always been an organized woman, and it naturally led to a career where she can help others. But not all clients are the same: We all have different types of clutter and reasons for the never-ending messes. To get to the root cause, Laurie looks at clients through an Enneagram perspective. Similar to the personality-revealing powers of the Meyers-Briggs test or even astrology, the Enneagram can be helpful in understanding what's motivating us or holding us back. Growing from this, we can see people as having three main types of clutter: physical, emotional, or calendar. You may even have some combination thereof. Take the clutter quiz here to find out what type of mess stress you're facing! Laurie uses this information to come up with an organization plan that will work best for you and address your particular hang-ups. She also works with people who face clutter issues due to an event - anything from throwing a party to overcoming the loss of a loved one. Our interview ends with a few more special tips Laurie has about keeping things clean. Time limits and turning cleaning into a fun experience are just some of her tricks. Be sure to listen to the full podcast above. It's full of insight and a few laughs, and you'll be inspired to finally tackle those messes and get organized! Learn more about Laurie Palau at her website, Simply B Organized. She's also the host of the terrific podcast, This Organized Life, and has a book called Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized. This week on BeREAL, Diana and Ednesha are joined by Laurie Palau from the podcast This ORGANIZED Life to discuss emotional clutter and the importance of being organized. Laurie Palau is the author of the book HOT MESS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO GETTING ORGANIZED, host of the popular weekly podcast, This ORGANIZED Life, and founder of Simply B Organized-a lifestyle company helping people live simply and work smarter. Her advice has been featured in national publications including Real Simple & The New York Times. Laurie speaks on the topics of clutter, parenting, and entrepreneurship. Her CLUTTER CLINIC™ is a nationwide workshop providing strategies to help your team, group, or organization reduce clutter at home or in the workplace. The episode begins with Laurie explaining the multiple forms of clutter that create stress in our lives. She goes into detail about physical clutter, emotional clutter, and calendar clutter. Palau explains how all three can contribute to a feel of unfulfillment and make life seem static. She then explains her five clutter pitfalls: procrastination, indecision, guilt, overwhelm, and time. All five pose a risk to an organized life, and she goes over how to combat each potential obstacle. After a quick break, the episode resumes with Ednesha asking Laurie about the “Pintrest Syndrome.” Laurie discusses how, sure, Pintrest photos look nice and are good sources of inspiration for room design, but they often aren't practical or easy to maintain. Laurie highlights how aesthetic is important in organization, but also, preservation is key. Don't strive for a design that will just add more stress into your life because of its need for constant maintenance. The episode concludes with Ednesha taking a few tips from Laurie and brainstorming how she will use them to design the backyard of her new place for the summer! Thank you so much for your continued support for The BeREAL Podcast. We look forward to each new week, and we hope you do as well. Keep a look out for a new episode next Tuesday! Challenges with planning and organization are common among kids with ADHD. It shows up with messy bedrooms, lost items, missing or never turned in homework, not putting things away, etc. The consequences of disorganization aren't just frustrating for kids, they're frustrating for their parents, too. In this episode of the Parenting ADHD Podcast, I'm talking with organizing expert, Laurie Palau of Simply B Organized. Join us as we discuss how everyone learns and processes differently, how to communicate with your child so they are clear on expectations and processes and open to hearing your suggestions, implementing routines to improve organization, and Laurie's top five tools and strategies for anyone to get and stay organized.
I think of organizational skills in a similar way to parenting skills. We are expected to “just know” how to do it! AND do it well! But how? How many of you were taught exactly how to organize your home? I just winged it and I’m sure you did too! It’s the same with parenting. We try our best to prepare but nothing can really prepare us for all that comes with raising another human being. My guest Laurie Palau is a master at organizing and at teaching PARENTS so we can teach our kids. She also teaches kids on how to be more organized (and there is no better time than right now!). You know when we say to our kids, “go clean your room!” Laurie explains that we need to be more specific so we can set our kids up for success. Does “clean your room” mean everything from vacuuming and dusting or does it just mean put your dirty clothes in the hamper? As you go about your day organizing and sorting, invite your kids to be a part of it and teach them how to do it. You can teach them that cleaning up is a part of playing! Let’s face it, most of us have so much stuff, and we can often get stuck because we don’t have a good process for organizing things. Laurie has so many simple and practical ways to get us organized. Listen in for some great tips to help you (and your kids) get more organized even during a global pandemic! Laurie Palau is an organization expert. She’s the author of the book Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized, the founder and CEO of Simply B Organized, and the host of the podcast This Organized Life. But she didn’t always know she’d become a clutter-cleansing guru. When Laurie was doing her undergrad at Rider college in Communication and Political Science, she thought she wanted to be a political speech writer in Washington. But late in her senior year, she took an internship with Rolling Stone Magazine in the Advertising department and fell in love with New York City. She decided to move to New York without much of a career plan, and worked odd jobs to make ends meet as she searched for her mystery dream job. Before finding it, Laurie began working as an Executive Recruiter, and stayed in the industry for about 15 years. Since then, she’s become a Board Member at Girls on the Run and discovered her passion for simplicity and organization. Today she works with clients and gives talks on overcoming the different types of clutter that hold people back. She also mentors and partners with other professional organizers to grow the Simply B Organized community.
