Liu Liangmo's story is as remarkable as it is unknown. An anti-imperialist, pro-Communist Christian, with a significant relationship to the Black Liberation Movement and the Indian Freedom Struggle, Liu lived in the U.S. as a diplomat after participating in the ongoing Chinese revolution. He wrote a column for the prominent Black newspaper. The Pittsburgh Courier, before returning to his home country and attaining a fairly high-ranking position there. His story offers notable insight into the history of pre- and post-revolutionary China and its approach to the Black freedom movement in the U.S. It also reveals much about the turbulent “Second Popular Front” era in China, during which time Communist forces obtained broader legitimacy. This has largely been erased from U.S. political and historical consciousness, which helps explain Liu's relative marginality. Most radical movements since the late 1960s have rightly critiqued the legacy of the Popular Front for blurring the lines between reform and revolution and, by extension, capitalism and communism. They see the Popular Front as an opportunist approach to building unity where radical ideas and the independent working-class program were subordinated to maintain legitimacy among left-liberal reform currents. What is lost in such sweeping generalizations are the unusual concrete circumstances and strategic conundrums that Communist forces faced worldwide in this moment, especially among the struggles of oppressed peoples against colonialism and fascism. Liu Liangmo's story provides an opportunity to critically examine this period anew. His Courier columns covered a wide breadth of “popular front” political activities and the relationships expressed in those writings speak to both the strengths and the weakness of Communist political activity during World War II. On the one hand, there was unprecedented vitality and significance to Communist-led interventions while, on the other hand, there was a lack of strategic clarity that forestalled a larger political breakthrough. Using Liu's columns as a foundation, we can address this moment and draw important international parallels. Read the full story here: https://www.liberationschool.org/liu-liangmo-pt-2/

Episode Notes Title: The Revolution - Untold Story of Indian Freedom Struggle: Season 2, Episode 1 Introduction: A hundred years have passed since the Battle of Plassey and the colonization of India began. This episode of The Revolution focuses on the Indian Mutiny. Body: The British East India Company applied policies to gain power over India. The fight against the British East India Company became a rebellion by the people. The Doctrine of Subsidiary Alliance was introduced to make Indian states and kings puppets of the British rulers. The Indian sepoys were relied upon by the British East India Company to quell any revolts that arose. Chhabeli, a little girl from Bithur, married Maharaja Gangadhar Rao of Jhansi, and later became known as Lakshmibai. The Doctrine of Lapse was implemented to de-legitimize the rights of the adopted heirs of the princely states in India. Lord Dalhousie's misapplication of the state-grab policy fueled humiliation in the hearts of the Indian people. Nana Saheb made progress in the rebellion for three years, as advised by Azimulla Khan, while the British company was occupied with repressing peasant and tribal revolts in different parts of the nation. The disgruntled conspirators used the pretext of new rifle cartridges very skillfully to inflame the sepoys. Conclusion: Nanasaheb visited Delhi, Ambala, Lucknow, and Jhansi, and took final preparations. Rumors of the upcoming rebellion were spread across the country in strange ways. Rebels Against the Raj tells the little-known story of seven people who chose to struggle for a country other than their own: foreigners to India who, from the late nineteenth century, arrived to join the freedom movement fighting for independence. Of the seven, four were British, two American and one Irish: four men, three women. Before and after being jailed or deported, they did remarkable and pioneering work in a variety of fields, from journalism and social reform to education, organic agriculture and environmentalism. In this episode of BIC Talks Ramachanchandra Guha and Alex Ellis discuss the stories of these remarkable people - each rebel motivated by idealism and genuine sacrifice; each connected to Gandhi, though some as acolytes while others were endlessly infuriated by his views; each understanding they would likely face prison sentences for their resistance, and likely live and die in India; each one leaving a profound impact on the region in which they worked, their legacies continuing through the institutions they founded and the generations and individuals they inspired. Through these entwined lives, we receive deep insights into the relationship between India and the West, and India's story as a country searching for its identity and liberty beyond British colonial rule. History plays an important part in shaping up the future and it is really important to know the history of your nation. We are more likely to read our history from the national point of view and those are usually favoring the national idea. In such time it becomes important to read different opinions or alternate narratives of the same incidents to make sure you have your own opinion about the history. "Keeping the Jewel in the Crown: The British Betrayal of India" by Walter Reid is the history of Indian struggle from 1917-1947, from the British perspective. He talked about the factors that helped India gain freedom from Britain and what British felt about it. He talked about Indian freedom fighter and tried to justify the British actions to keep ruling India. But, is this book really worth your time or you can skip it for something better? The legacy of Mahatma Gandhi goes well beyond the Indian Freedom Struggle. He has influenced countless movements and struggles for freedom and democracy around the world, decolonization struggles, including the civil rights movement within the United States. We speak with P. Anand Rao who is a professor of Communications and Digital Studies at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. I reached out to Rao to see if he could talk to us a little bit about what research he’s done into this connection between Gandhi and the civil rights movement. And also, how it ties into the legacy of James Farmer. I also happen to be an alum of Mary Washington. So, I was very excited to find on a listserv that I’m a part of, M.K.Gandi.org, that a professor from Mary Washington wrote a piece for his local newspaper about the influence of Gandhi on the civil rights movement. As I started to reflect back, I remembered there was a statue right across from the building where I studied philosophy (the Classics, Philosophy and Religion department) of a great Civil Rights leader, James Farmer. And I thought, “Well, maybe it isn’t unlikely that a professor from Mary Washington would be speaking about the civil rights movement and Gandhi, given that there’s actually a deep legacy between the University of Mary Washington and the civil rights leader, James Farmer. Read the transcript at Waging Nonviolence. The post Gandhi’s Influence on Dr. James Farmer appeared first on Metta Center.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was a great freedom fighter and due to his significant role in Indian freedom struggle, he is also known as the 'Liberator of India'. As a young leader of the Bengal Congress (part of the Indian National Congress, which was fighting for the Indian independence), Bose formed the "Bengal Volunteers Corps" during the Calcutta Session of the Congress Party in 1928. Importantly, Netaji Bose was strongly in favour of 'Complete independence' of India from the colonial British rule. Though colonized by the Great Britain Empire for almost 200 years, the Indians never gave up their hope for liberty. During 1857 and 1858, the Indians rose against the rule of British East India Company. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was ultimately unsuccessful, but it still proved to be an important watershed in the history of Indian-British relations and marked the beginning of the Indian Independence Movement. Then did the Non-Cooperation Movement come in 1920 and Mahatma Gandhi rose as one of the most important contributors to India's decolonization. In 1942, Gandhi led the Quit India Campaign, a mass protest demanding "An Orderly British Withdrawal" from India. References 1.
