In November of 1979, militants in Iran seized 66 American citizens at the US embassy in Tehran and held 52 of them hostage for more than a year. Negotiations to get the citizens returned safely to America were hard, as the US administration struggled to find anyone to negotiate within a meaningful fashion. On January 27, 1981, just six days after the inauguration, President Reagan welcomed all of the freed American hostages at the White House and greeted each of them individually. Let’s listen to his remarks from that day.

Oh say, can you see, that Inaugurations…are kinda boring? This week, we travel back 20 years to revisit Bush’s Inauguration in glorious standard definition. While we observed that not a ton has changed with these events, enough differences were present during Biden’s inauguration to give one some hope for the future. We also discuss why there were no celebrites present at the 2001 Inauguration, cause what would an American celebration be without CELEBRITIES?! In just the 72 short years between the Presidential inaugurations of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, the landscape of America had shifted dramatically. In 1789, citizens lined the streets to catch a celebratory glimpse of the esteemed General as he made his journey to take the oath of office. Lincoln, on the other hand, had to be disguised and smuggled to the capitol due to riots and the potential for violence. The first inauguration served to commemorate a nation coming together as one, in pursuit of the dream for a more perfect Union. By 1861, the fabric of that Union was tearing at the seams as the nation spiraled toward civil war. By the time Lincoln stood to deliver his inaugural address, seven states had already seceded the Union, and cries of “not my president” were in the wind. The nation was divided and the fate of the American project hung in the balance. What would Lincoln say as he stepped to the podium? How would he lead this nation in crisis and what could we learn in a day that seems all too familiar to his? Let's dive in!The national and political climate around the Presidential election of 1860 (4:30)The emergence and election of the Illinois lawyer, Abraham Lincoln (9:15)“Not my President” - The contentious context ahead of Lincoln's Inauguration (22:42)Lincoln channels Washington as he bids farewell to Springfield and makes an eventful journey to the nation's capital (29:56)Breaking down Lincoln's speech (33:15)Confronting the Southern secession (34:58)The Bible's presence and influence in the oath (36:16)An Exposition of the Constitution in refutation of the Confederate secession (37:42)Acknowledging the active presence of God and the nation's need of His mercy (49:01)Collective faith will lead a nation toward true justice (55:26)Lincoln concludes his speech with a powerful and tender woo toward Union (1:02:19) In light of Lincoln's speech, what advice would you give President Biden ahead of his inauguration address this week? Stirred by duty and endowed with humility, our nation's first President stepped to the podium on April 30th, 1789 to deliver the first inaugural address. The timeless speech that followed reveals the nobility of George Washington's character and motivations that stand in sharp contrast with much of what passes in the political realm today. The precedence he set was one of patriotism, not partisanship; constitutionality, not re-electability; dependence not arrogance. There is so much to learn from our nation's 1st President and his 1st Inauguration on this, the inaugural episode of Faith and Liberty Rediscovered! Can you imagine a Presidential inauguration devoid of any reference to a political party? Can you conceive of a day where an entire nation celebrated a first-term President who had no interest in a second? What about a Presidential cabinet that was intentionally inclusive of competing coalitions of thought? Can you fathom an inauguration day that ended with the entire executive branch together, in church? What may seem like dreams were realities in April of 1789. The incredibly divisive climate surrounding the 46th Presidential inauguration compels us to look back at our nation's 1st and see what we might learn.Stirred by duty and endowed with humility, our nation's first President stepped to the podium on April 30th, 1789 to deliver the first inauguration address. First episode about pearl necklaces and life
My guest this week worked both Obama campaigns, starting in January 2007 as Director of Special Events, a position that would take him through 30 states with Barack Obama. Along the way he helped revolutionise how data is gathered and used, how old tools like TV and radio are harmonised for maximum effect with social media, and went on to serve in both Inaugurations, both Administrations, and the President’s re-election. He says “The Obama campaigns are like 10 years of a corporation distilled into 18 months. In those few months the campaign is born, learns how to walk then gallop, then blossoms into a billion-dollar corporation that must reach out to 130 million people all in less than 2 years. It is marketing, social media, communications and branding all happening at once and all happening at light speed.” He is the Principal at New Day Strategy, bringing these skills to clients in the business world. Please welcome Roger Fisk. Bio Roger Fisk is the political campaign, marketing and media strategist widely credited with playing a key behind-the-scenes role in the back-to-back electoral victories of US President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. He was heavily involved in these game-changing campaigns which are regarded as the best run presidential campaigns in the history of US politics. Roger has a deep understanding of 21st-century presidential politics, political campaigning and the unprecedented power of information, relationships and marketing. He successfully engaged millions of people in long, sustained marketing and promotional strategies, using the internet and social media networks to great effect. Roger Fisk was hired by the Obama Team as the National Director of Special Events in what would become a history-making Finance Department. Here he managed a nationwide grass-roots fundraising team that revolutionised modern political fundraising, totalling US$100 million in 11 months while building the largest donor base in American history. During the campaign, Roger served as principal liaison with US Secret Service and local law enforcement and was directly responsible for coordinating and managing the media’s coverage of over 150 events across the country. He was in charge of some key Obama media appearances including 60 Minutes, The Daily Show, Good Morning America, Saturday Night Live, and the historic Race Speech in Philadelphia in March 2008. Roger supervised teams in 27 states with direct managerial responsibility for event and advertising budgets, site selection, appropriation of staff resources, cultivation of targeted free media, coordination of web outreach, and collaboration with local, state and national elected officials. Following President Obama’s first campaign he served as Cabinet Liaison for the 2009 Inauguration, then became a political appointee in the Obama Administration. In the Spring of 2012 Fisk joined President Obama’s re-election team, leading teams as a White House Lead Advance in critical states like Virginia, Iowa and Ohio, all of which the President won. Roger Fisk lectures on these revolutionary campaigning techniques while also offering high-impact seminars designed to enhance Executive Communications and Leadership Skills. Prior to his work for President Obama, Roger worked for Deval Patrick’s successful campaign for Governor of Massachusetts. All of this experience came from his work for Senator John Kerry, where he served as his Senior Aide in the US Senate for Communication and Policy. He advised Senator Kerry on a wide range of politically sensitive issues, including Medicare, AIDS, community health, and child nutrition. He worked for the Kerry Presidential campaign from its very first day to its last. His Presidential appointment in the Commerce Department requires him to coordinate diplomatic and trade missions for the Cabinet and President. He has served as Lead USG Coordinator on trade missions to India and China and co-ordinated the Cabinet’s role in both the 2009 COP-15 Global Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen and the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. He served as President Obama’s point person at the 2011 G8 Summit in Deauville, France. These experiences provide Roger with a deep understanding of 21st-century Presidential politics, how America’s political system impacts the rest of the world and the rapidly shifting cultural landscape they play out on. Today is Inauguration Day in the United States. Here are some things you may not have known about The swearing in of presidents. Usually we end of this segment with a trivia question, but today let's start with one. Besides George Washington, who is the only president to have been sworn in in different months following his election? The answer is Franklin Roosevelt, who was sworn in for his first term on March 4, 1933 and was sworn in for his second term on January 20, 1937. The reason for the different inauguration date was the 20th amendment to the US Constitution. It changed the Inauguration date from March 4, or March 5 on years when the fourth fell on a Sunday, to January 20 or 21. In addition, the 20th Amendment moved the start date for congressional terms to January 3, and provides a method for selecting a president if the electoral college fails to do so. In total, there were 36 inaugurations held on March 4 or March 5. The first inauguration, that of George Washington in 1789, was held in April. Presidents who ascend to the office following the death or resignation of their predecessor are sworn in immediately to avoid a power vacuum. Three of these extraordinary inaugurations have taken place in April, 2 each in August and September, and one each in November and July. The Chief Justice of United States usually administers the oath of office. However, during extraordinary inaugurations the chief justice is not always available. Two notable cases were the first inaugurations of Calvin Coolidge and Lyndon Johnson. Coolidge, who became president following the death of Warren G. Harding, was sworn in by his father who was a state notary public. Following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Johnson was sworn in by US District Judge Sarah T. Hughes, the only woman to have administered the oath of office. Coolidge's second inauguration was the first to feature a former president administering the oath. William Howard Taft became Chief Justice following his term as president. Our question: Which president had both the warmest and coldest inaugurations in history? Today is Martyr's Day in Azerbaijan, Heroes’ day in Cape Verde, and Armed Forces Day in Mali. It’s unofficially National Cheese Lovers Day and National Sweatpants Day. It’s the birthday of actor and comedian George Burns, who was born in 1896; Director David Lynch who is 71; and musician Questlove, who is 46. Because our topic doesn’t have a specific year associated with it, we’ll pick a year at random. This week in 1980, the top song in the U.S. was “Rock With You” by Michael Jackson. The No. 1 movie was “Kramer vs. Kramer,” while the novel “Smiley's People” by John le Carré topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. Links Follow us on Twitter, Facebook or our website. David Cannadine reflects on the history of American presidential inaugurations since Abraham Lincoln's, and compares presidents' speeches at the start of their first and second terms in office. "Second inaugurals...are often less up-beat and up-lifting, since it's no longer possible for a president, having already been four years in office, to offer a new deal or to proclaim, as President Obama did in 2009 that 'change is coming to America'".Producer: Sheila Cook.
As President Obama's second inauguration approaches, Stephen looks back at our country's most famous Second Inaugural Address.
