The Indian Mutiny of 1857. Known in India these days as the First War of Independence. A bitter hard-fought conflict in the sweltering heat of northern India. It's a war we've covered here on Redcoat History before but it's a fascinating conflict that saw a small number of redcoats massively outnumbered and surrounded, far from support and short on supplies. It was a war that showed Victorian British society at its best and its worst. I think its a war we should study and remember… Well, today I am joined by the wonderful Eva Chatterji to discuss her new book - The Lucknow Residency: A Story of 1857 Eva's book is available here - https://amzn.to/3Atvmdf If you are interested in the Zulu War, then please sign up for my mailing list to receive my free book on the subject: https://redcoathistory.com/newsletter/ If you are very generous, you can also buy me a coffee and help support the channel via https://ko-fi.com/redcoathistory or you can sign up for my Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/RedcoatHistory

https://www.patreon.com/isyanderandkoda You already know how to please the Machine Gods at this point so thank you so much. And make your voices heard for which faction you would like to see next! -Isyander Everything below is for the omnissiah. But like, you can read it if you want. Just a synopsis of the video you're watching. The story begins with the Ullanor Campaign, a massive military operation during the Great Crusade. The Emperor of Mankind and his Primarchs, including Horus, led the Imperial forces against the Ork empire of Overlord Urlakk Urg. This campaign was pivotal, as it marked one of the largest and most crucial victories for the Imperium. The defeat of the Orks on Ullanor was celebrated with the Ullanor Triumph, during which the Emperor declared Horus as Warmaster, setting the stage for future events in the galaxy. The War of the Beast was a devastating conflict, during this period, an Ork Warlord, known as The Beast, rose to power, leading a Waaagh! of unprecedented scale and ferocity. With Ullanor as the heart of this massive Ork empire. The rediscovery of Ullanor, now transformed into a world of industry and war under Ork dominion, was a symbolic and strategic blow to the Imperium. The First War for Armageddon was sparked by the return of the daemon Primarch Angron and his World Eaters. Seeking to conquer Armageddon, Angron led a daemonic invasion that brought chaos and destruction. The Space Wolves, led by Logan Grimnar, alongside elements of the Grey Knights, confronted the chaos forces in a brutal and bloody conflict. The war ended with the banishment of Angron, but not without immense loss and devastation. The Second War for Armageddon saw the return of the Orks, led by the infamous warlord Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka. In 941.M41, Ghazghkull launched a massive Waaagh! against Armageddon, overwhelming the planet's defenses. The war was characterized by brutal city fights, large-scale tank battles, and the resilience of Armageddon's defenders. Commissar Yarrick emerged as a hero, his legendary determination and leadership inspiring the Imperial forces. Despite heavy losses, the combined efforts of the Imperial Guard, Space Marines, and local militias eventually repelled the Ork invasion, but the threat was far from over. The Third War for Armageddon began in 998.M41, with Ghazghkull returning to Armageddon, this time with an even larger Ork horde. The conflict quickly escalated into one of the largest wars in Imperial history. The warzones were marked by intense battles, including the defense of Hive Acheron and the struggle for Hive Helsreach. Notable participants included the Black Templars, led by High Marshal Helbrecht, and the Salamanders, under Captain Tu'Shan. The war also saw the return of Commissar Yarrick, now a living legend. Lakshmibai is India's Joan of Arc. When the English claimed her country, she fought back. Her story is the most famous part of what the English called the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and the Indians call the First War of Independence. Though she lost in the end, Lakshmibai's story (and glory) lives on in Indian popular culture. Visit the website (herhalfofhistory.com) for sources, transcripts, and pictures. William J. Flynn, nicknamed "The Bulldog Detective", had a fascinating and accomplished career in law enforcement. While in the Secret Service he not only battled the Mafia in New York City, but also uncovered a sophisticated German spy ring on the cusp of America's entry into World War I. As Director of the Bureau of Investigation, he devised the first counterterrorist strategy in United States history. He was a writer as well, contributing articles both to journals and to a true crime detective magazine which bore his name. My guest is author and terrorism expert Jeffrey D. Simon, and his recently published book is called "The Bulldog Detective: William J. Flynn and America's First War against the Mafia, Spies, and Terrorists." He shares highlights from Flynn's riveting life and career. Jeffrey Simon's website: https://www.futureterrorism.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The decision by Moody's credit rating agency to downgrade Israel's rating and outlook last week was a shock to the country after decades of growth and a rosy outlook for the future as its technology-driven industries flourished. Haaretz economics editor and commentator David Rosenberg explains to Haaretz Podcast host Allison Kaplan Sommer why Israel received this "black mark," what it means, Israel's finance minister's "abnormal reaction" to the news and how it reflects the world's distrust of a far-right Orthodox-dominated government with an "agenda that, whatever else you might think about it, is not positive for the start-up nation phenomenon." The Gaza war, he suggests, marks the end of "a view that was shared by many people in the Middle East – not just by Israelis – that there was an alternative to war and terrorism and constant political upheaval. That alternative, which we've seen happening in the Gulf, especially in the United Arab Emirates, and to a degree in Saudi Arabia, was 'let's focus on economic development and creating normal middle class societies' while pushing the Palestinian problem and try to put our political troubles behind us." Also on the podcast, Haaretz's Washington correspondent Ben Samuels outlines the growing tensions between the Biden White House and the Israeli government over a full-on ground invasion in Rafah, where Hamas military presence remains, among 1.3 million Palestinian refugees crammed into the southern Strip. Will Netanyahu defy the Biden administration's concerns and forge ahead? Samuels says that as long as the White House offers carrots without sticks, he believes it will. "The warnings are falling on deaf ears because Israel understands that there aren't going to be significant consequences other than rhetorical reprimands. Until there's really some sort of conditionality on U.S. support, the warnings of the administration will be relatively ineffective."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Beginning as a purge by the Ordo Malleus against survivors of the conflict for fear of the lingering taint of Chaos, it escalated into skirmishes and eventual full battle with the Space Wolves. The term itself is not an official one, and indeed few in the Imperium are aware of the incident's existence. Rather, the name was coined by some within the Grey Knights, who saw the deaths of their Grand Master and Battle Brothers as a mark of shame and regret.Support the show
The Bulldog Detective, Law and Crime author series, Dr. Jeffrey D. Simon The Bulldog Detective: William J. Flynn and America's First War against the Mafia, Spies, and Terrorists Hardcover – January 16, 2024 by Jeffrey D. Simon (Author) America in the early twentieth century was rife with threats. Organized crime groups like the Mafia, German spies embedded behind enemy lines ahead of World War I, package bombs sent throughout the country, and the 1920 Wall Street bombing dominated headlines. Yet the story of the one man tasked with combating these threats has yet to be told. The Bulldog Detective: William J. Flynn and America's First War Against the Mafia, Spies, and Terrorists is the first book to tell the story of Flynn, the first government official to bring down the powerful Mafia, uncover a sophisticated German spy ring in the United States, and launch a formal war on terrorism on his way to becoming one of the most respected and effective law enforcement officials in American history. Long before Eliot Ness and the Untouchables went after Al Capone and the Italian mob in Chicago, Flynn dismantled the first Mafia family to exist in America. Next stop for the indefatigable crime fighter would be Chief of the Secret Service where he would set his crosshairs on the country's most notorious currency counterfeiters. Coined “the Bulldog” for his tenacity, Flynn's fame soared as he exposed Kaiser Germany's sophisticated spy and sabotage ring on the cusp of America's entry into World War I. As the Director of the Bureau of Investigation (the forerunner of the FBI), the Bulldog would devise the first counterterrorist strategy in U.S. history. In this riveting biography, author Jeffrey D. Simon brings to life the forgotten saga of one of America's greatest crime and terrorist fighters. Exquisitely researched, The Bulldog Detective finally uncovers the important legacy of this fascinating man who will now no longer be lost in history. William J. Between 1865 and 1872, the first iteration of the Ku Klux Klan conducted a reign of terror across the former Confederate States, harassing, intimidating, and murdering freedpeople and their white allies. As violence spread with impunity across the South, Congress, at President Ulysses S. Grant's urging, passed three Enforcement Acts, which radically expanded the federal government's ability to protect individuals from violence when their state governments could or would not. Lawfare Associate Editor for Communications Anna Hickey sat down with Fergus Bordewich, author of “Klan War: Ulysses S. Grant and the Battle to Save Reconstruction,” to discuss how the Grant administration fought the first domestic terrorist organization the federal government had ever faced. They also talked about the political terrorism conducted by the Klan in that era and what we can learn from that violent period of American history.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. At the end of the nineteenth century, the world came to know and fear terrorism. Much like today, this was a time of progress and dread, in which breakthroughs in communications and weapons were made, political reforms were implemented, and immigration waves bolstered the populations of ever-expanding cities. This era also simmered with political rage and social inequalities, which drove nationalists, nihilists, anarchists and republicans to dynamite cities and discharge pistols into the bodies of presidents, police chiefs and emperors. The most notorious incidents were Tsar Alexander II's murder by the People's Will in 1881, and the dynamiting of the Café Terminus in Paris in 1894, specifically targeting innocents. This wave of terrorism was seized upon by an outrage-hungry press that peddled hysteria, conspiracy theories and, sometimes, fake news in response, convincing many a reader that they were living through the end of days. Against the backdrop of this world of fear and disorder, today's guest, James Crossland, author of “The Rise of Devils,” discusses the journeys of the men and women who evoked this panic and created modern terrorism “revolutionary” philosophers, cult leaders, criminals and charlatans, as well the paranoid police chiefs and unscrupulous spies who tried to thwart them. We examine how radicals once thought just in their causes became, as Pope Pius IX denounced them, little more than “devils risen up from Hell”.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3101278/advertisement
Long before Governor Ron DeSantis declared a new war on wokeness, Florida lawmakers in the 1950s and 60s tried going after the NAACP, suspected communists and gay people in Florida schools and universities. The lawmakers upended life for countless numbers of their fellow Floridians before being upended themselves by their own zeal for the cause. Now that DeSantis is bringing this playbook to a presidential campaign, Rachel Maddow and Isaac-Davy Aronson ask what we can learn from the last time Florida went down this path. Featuring guests:Stacy Braukman, author of Communists and Perverts Under the Palms: The Johns Committee in Florida, 1956-1965Shevrin Jones, Florida State SenatorRobert Buccellatto, historian and co-host of the Florida History Podcast
The first war of independence of Chechnya with the Russian Federation starts in 1994 and runs for two years. In 1999, while the country and its people are still struggling to recover, the Russian authorities start bombing Chechnya again. Through these tough years in the North Caucasus and when access is repeatedly blocked by the Russian forces, MSF staff continues to try to provide food and medical aid to people inside Chechnya and to Chechen refugees in the surrounding republics. From the start of the first war, MSF feeds the press with information on the rapidly deteriorating conditions and the Russian's refusal to let them into many areas of the country.

Welcome to Episode 57, in which KT and Laurel finish Women's History Month STRONG with two stories about amazing warrior women! First up, KT takes us to the Soviet Union during World War II and introduces us to Colonel Marina Raskova and the 588th Night Bomber Regiment also known as the Night Witches. Next, Laurel takes us back to British India during the mid-1800s to meet Lakshmi Bai, the Rani (or Queen) of Jhansi. Lakshmi Bai's biography takes place within the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 also known as the First War of Independence which made Lakshmi a folk hero for her country. **Correction!** Laurel also corrects this before starting her half of the episode but she messed up BAD on some pronunciation and is furious with herself about it. Throughout the story, you'll hear her pronounce Jhansi as "YAN-see" when it is actually "JHAN-see." She also mispronounces "Sepoy," saying it as "se-POY" instead of the correct "SEE-poy." *~*~*~*~ The Socials! The Vietnamese victory over the French forces at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, which ended almost a century of French colonial rule in Indochina, is one of the most famous events in the history of anticolonialism. How were the Vietnamese communists able to achieve this remarkable victory over a much more powerful colonial force? This is the question Chris Goscha seeks to answer in his new book, The Road to Dien Bien Phu: A History of the First War for Vietnam (Princeton UP, 2022). In doing so, Goscha re-enters the vexed debate about the relative importance of nationalism and communism in Vietnam's struggle against foreign powers. And he puts forward a compelling argument about the importance of “war communism” to the Vietnamese victory over the French. Chris Goscha is Professor of History and International Relations at the University of Quebec at Montreal, Canada, and a prize-winning author of works on the modern history of Vietnam. In 1857 tensions in Company-controlled India came to a head in what the British called 'The Indian Mutiny', now referred to in India as the First War of Independence. The uprising and bloody reprisals sent shockwaves through the Empire, ended the rule of the East India Company, and led to the creation of the Raj. You may have heard about the first Gulf War - basically the entire world vs. Saddam Hussein. But though 34 countries - 34! - entered the alliance against Iraq, Israel didn't. So why on earth did missiles begin to rain down on Israel? In this episode, Noam breaks down how the 1991 Gulf War affected ordinary Israelis, tested the US-Israel relationship, and even challenged the long-held Zionist ethos. ~~~~ This season of Unpacking Israeli History is generously sponsored by Marci & Andrew Spitzer and Barbara Sommer & Alan Fisher, and this episode is generously sponsored by the Center For Advancement of Jewish Education, and The Jewish Federation of Northern NJ. ~~~~ Bibliography: Alston, Adam Eley and Katie. “The Ex-CIA Agent Who Interrogated Saddam Hussein.” BBC News, BBC, 4 Jan. 2017, https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38497767. “Saddam Hussein -- Iraq's 'President for Life'.” The Christian Science Monitor, The Christian Science Monitor, 26 Aug. 1981, https://www.csmonitor.com/1981/0826/082659.html. “Before The Revolution | Trailer.” YouTube, uploaded by Journeyman Pictures, 9 March 2016, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMrmK2VGmmg&ab_channel=JourneymanPictures. “Persian Gulf.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., https://www.britannica.com/place/Persian-Gulf. “Saddam Hussein.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., https://www.britannica.com/biography/Saddam-Hussein. On Friday, a Russian soldier appeared in court for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine. Vadim Shishimarin, 21, stands accused of committing war crimes in a district court in Kyiv. And mourners were attacked by Israeli police during the funeral procession of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in Jerusalem on Friday. The police claimed that rocks and projectiles were thrown at them. Plus, Princeton University researchers have discovered which chemical compounds in human odor cause mosquitoes to zero in on people and spread mosquito-borne diseases.
