If Joker's an example of a villain-led movie done right, then certainly Brightburn from the same year is its antithesis. An interesting starting point that's weighed down by its dumb characters, boring plot, and lack of imagination. But hey, at least the deaths are cool. We'll breakdown what exactly went wrong, as well as the James Gunn/Disney controversy, Mallie's plan to completely derail Dustin's career, punchable faces, and a hell of a lot more.Brightburn stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. When the Evil Boy of Steel Throws a Tantrum This week on the podcast Brian is joined by friend of the show Darryl Jasper, and they are talking about the newest James Gunn produced superhero horror movie Brightburn! Brightburn (2019) Brightburn is a 2019 American superhero horror film directed by David Yarovesky and produced by James Gunn and Kenneth Huang. It stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. We went and saw Brightburn, and it was as advertised, but even more gory than I expected. It's not a perfect film, there isn't a lot of character development past the perfunctory set up, and there are some plot threads are fully dropped without explanation, but overall it delivers a very good horror film riffing on the superhero genre. Brandon does what every good middle american farm boy would do with these new found super powers… He kills and maims anyone that gets in his way towards world domination, including those closest to him. He's just a good ol' mid-western boy Brightburn Critique David is going to complain that this story has been done dozens of times with Superman in the comics. But if you like me aren’t a FUCKING NERD, then this is probably the first depiction of a truly evil superman origin story, at least on film. I think this film accomplished exactly what it set out to do, and was very enjoyable to me. While it is exactly what I expected in terms of plot, it exceeded my expectations with how dark, and especially how gory they went with it. Brightburn is directed by a relative newcomer David Yarovesky, but produced by James Gunn, who is the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies as well as Super, another anti-superhero movie. It is well cast with Elizabeth Banks as Tori, the mother in denial, and David Denman as Kyle, the father that immediately is suspicious. Brandon Breyers, the anti-superman, is played by Jackson A. Dunn which does a great job of maintaining a steely enigmatic gaze. The script doesn’t delve too deeply into character development, but the characters are three dimensional, and react to the events of the film in natural ways. SuperBuy or Rent James Gunn's first Anti-Superhero film.Buy/Rent on Amazon They keep the intentions and internal motivations of Brandon intentionally mysterious up until the time that he starts wreaking havok. Although it didn’t explore as many facets of the anti-superman story as they could have, it delivered on the promise of a really dark story in an effective and efficient manner. I really enjoyed it. Another week has come and gone and you know what that means a new Reel Film Nerds podcast! On this week’s hump day Mean Mike Talent and Amazing Matt review another superhero movie but there is a catch, this is a horror/thriller superhero movie. Brightburn brought to you by the Gunn brothers puts a dark spin on the Superman origin story to say the least. Extra topics include growlers, nerds are now cool, and of course the rise of superhero films in mainstream media today. Brightburn is an intense superhero thriller that starts out slowly and quickly ramps up the fear and violence. It is a gritty, dark, and gory film even cringeworthy at times. The acting is excellent especially from Elizabeth Banks and Jackson A. Dunn. Mike and Matt both recommend you go out and see this movie especially if you like horror or superhero films. Matt really loved the take on the classic origin of Superman. It reminded him of the DC comic publications known as the Elseworlds and the Marvel comic book series What If? He gives Brightburn 4 out of 5 Reels. Mean Mike Talent also enjoyed this thriller just not as much as Matt. He can be very harsh especially in his old age. Mike gives Brightburn 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Next week we are going to be talking about the Elton John biopic Rocketman starring that kid from the Kingman’s movies Taron Egerton who actually sings John’s songs in the film unlike some other recent biopic that was nominated for a bunch of awards, sorry rant over. MOVIE REVIEW: What if Superman was evil? That's been the marketing focus of Brightburn since day one. It's been the question everyone's wondered about, and at the very least, it makes for a very interesting high concept advertisement. But a film is more than a concept, and what we watch in the theater lays testament to what we hype up during the seasons leading up to release. So, now that it's out, what's the strange amalgamation of Superhero and Horror genre like on the big screen? Brightburn is Rated R for horror violence/bloody images, and language. It features David Denman, Elizabeth Banks, and Jackson A. Dunn. Directed by David Yarovesky. Tune in Wednesday nights for new episodes of Cinematic Doctrine! The Breyers are a happy family. 10 years ago, the husband (David Denman) and wife (Elizabeth Banks) find a mysterious baby in an alien spacecraft in their woods. That baby has now become their child Brandon (Jackson A. Dunn). But instead of being the heroic Superman, Brandon Breyer has become something... different. In this episode, Gerrit and Mike watch "Brightburn," a completely different take on the martian from Krypton story. Produced by James Gunn (of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and Slither" fame), it's one of the hosts' most anticipated movies. But is this film any good? Take a listen to find out! I just finished watching Brightburn less than 15 minutes ago and boy am I shook. It's a pretty scary and gory film and very unexpected. It is produced by James Gunn from the Guardians of the Galaxy. Directed by David Yarovesky which has done another film called the Hive which I may check out after watching this. I don't know how this film will do box office wise because a lot of movie going public want their superheroes flawed but not this flawed. The movie goers are still in the 'superheroes should be good' phase. This film definitely breaks from that. I mean, Jackson A. Dunn, who plays Bradon Breyer who plays the evil version of Clark Kent, is definitely super but not a hero. He is equally parts sweet, innocent then creepy. He is a very good actor and his transition from regular sweet boy to amoral and homicidal is very good. He can play both parts equally well. I love the whole concept, the writing, the pace and the acting. The concept is original, basically along the premise of," What if Clark Kent/Superman was not a good person? What would he do with all of those superpowers?" The movie just adeptly applies the concept and although it is quite a scary movie, with a few jump scenes, great suspense and buildup. Elizabeth Banks plays the doting mother really well. In fact, you can say that this is her story. David Denman plays the Dad and also does justice to his role. The film spends a lot of time building up their family history and their relationship. That is why it can be heartbreaking to see how their son's new-found powers affect their family. I definitely love the film. It's scary, it's original. The supporting actors are really great. The movie keeps you at the edge of your seat and you don't know what is going to happen next. The ending is unexpected and well just jaw-dropping. In fact, there are really a couple of 'jaw-dropping' scenes here and that is sort of a hint. If you get my drift. I would recommend this movie. It's a horror film that is heart-breaking and a film about family as well. Also, it asks a question of: can you really avoid your own destiny? I would give this movie a 4 over 5 popcorns because I just love horror films. And this one, really kept me at the edge of my seat. Made me jump a few times. The storytellers just really pushed the envelope of what is acceptable in 'superhero' films. This is not your ordinary Superman or Avenger hero. This is along the lines of Damien. If you love horror films. If you love gory films. If you love superhero films. If you love good story-telling and twist endings. This movie is for you.
In 2006, Tori and Kyle Breyer (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) are a farm couple living in Brightburn, Kansas. They are trying to have a child, but have failed to conceive. One night, a meteor falls from the sky near their farm with a baby inside. They decide to adopt him, naming him Brandon (Jackson A. Dunn). The film takes a turn towards horror as Brandon begins to develop powers similar to classic comic book hero, Superman. With these newly discovered powers, Brandon begins to torture the residents of Brightburn.
