For this week's Episode of the Adam Analyzes Podcast, I took a look at one of my favorite James Gunn directed films, Super. A story about an average guy that goes through emotional tragedy and decides to become a superhero to fight crime...with a wrench! It also appears to be James Gunn's most personal movie with the themes of love and loss. I also decided to take a quick look back at the David Yarovesky directed, Brightburn, which is a James Gunn produced dark take on the Superman origin story & mythos. It also has a surprising link to the first featured film in this episode, Super. Brightburn also features a few recurring actors from James Gunn's previous and current works. Finally I decided to weigh in on my thoughts with the current state of DC under the co-leadership of James Gunn, why we may need to wait and see his plans & also why the trend in bullying studios into bending to on-line outcries should probably stop. Have a listen to find out my thoughts on all of the above and hopefully everyone is having a great start to the new year!! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adamanalyzes/support

I interview Tim Williams, composer of the soundtrack for the movie Pearl. (Oct 11, 2022) Here's the press release from his publicist: (September 15, 2022 – Los Angeles, CA) – Today, A24 Music released the single “Pearl Main Titles” from the Pearl Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with music by Tyler Bates & Timothy Williams, listen here. The full 19-track album will be available September 23 on major digital platforms. With only six weeks to assemble a 68-person orchestra, Bates brought in frequent collaborator Timothy Williams, who worked with the composer on Guardians of the Galaxy, to help him audition musicians, build the orchestra, rehearse over four days in Nashville, and record the score. “In the style of mid-century melodramas,” says West, “Tyler Bates fashioned a sweeping, shrieking, strings-based score that lets the viewer know from the opening credits that Pearl will not be a subdued or quiet film. I said to him, ‘let's do a romantic, melodramatic, old-school score for this movie.'” He continues, “This wasn't the first time I've used live instruments on a movie—but it was the first time I had a full orchestra. It was awesome. Tyler and Tim really hit it out of the park. The score is very much one of the film's central characters, and that was important." “Ti expressed the musical approach to this film with us before filming,” says Bates & Williams. “We knew that the music would be based in an "Old Hollywood" approach, which stylistically is something we both love to do. This was a rare opportunity to write a lyrical score where the main theme permeates the music throughout the myriad emotional and psychological dynamics from beginning to end.” ABOUT TIM Timothy Williams is a multi-award-winning composer best known for his work on Pearl, Finding You, Brightburn, and Get Out! Williams' films includes A24's Pearl, co-scored with Tyler Bates, Gravitas' The Swearing Jar, Roadside Attractions' Finding You, Screen Gems' Brightburn, directed by David Yarovesky, We Summon The Darkness, directed by Marc Meyers, which won best score award at ScreamfestLA; Wild Horses, directed by Robert Duvall; I.T., directed by John Moore, and Red Sky, for which Tim Williams was nominated Best Composer by Motion Picture Sound Editors and best score at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. Williams has written additional music for the Academy Award® and Golden Globe® winner Get Out!, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Hobbs and Shaw, Deadpool 2, 300, Watchmen, Super, Sucker Punch, and The Spy Who Dumped Me. Television work includes co-scoring AMC/Shudder Creepshow with Tyler Bates, Disney Junior's Piney, the Fox pilot Richard Lovely, and additional music on Fox's The Exorcist (S2), ABC's Missing and Comedy Network's Sym-Bionic Titan. A graduate of the National Film and Television School, Williams has received two Motion Picture SE Golden Reel Award nominations (Red Sky), four Thea Award wins, 10 ASCAP Plus Awards and won best score at the 24FPS Festival (Butterfly Circus), best score at ScreamfestLA 2019 (We Summon The Darkness) and best soundtrack nomination at the HMMA Awards (Red Sky). Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. COLIN STETSON Colin Stetson was born and raised in Ann Arbor, spent a decade in San Francisco and Brooklyn honing his formidable talents as a horn player, eventually settling in Montreal in 2007. Over the years he has worked extensively, live and in studio, with a wide range of bands and musicians including Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, TV On The Radio, Feist, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, The Chemical Brothers, Animal Collective, Hamid Drake, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Angelique Kidjo, Fink, and David Gilmore. Meanwhile he has developed an utterly unique voice as a soloist, principally on saxophones and clarinets, his intense technical prowess matched by his exhilarating and emotionally gripping skills as a songwriter. Stetson's astounding physical engagement with his instruments (chiefly bass and alto saxophones) produces emotionally rich and polyphonic compositions that transcend expectations of what solo horn playing can sound like. Stemming from that approach and aesthetic, he has been contributing regularly to the world of film, TV, and game scoring over the past decade with such titles as Hereditary (2018), The First (2018), Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), Color Out of Space (2019), Barkskins (2020), Mayday (2021), Among The Stars (2021), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), The Menu (2022), and Uzumaki (2023). There's nothing like getting lost in a good scary story, so it's apt that we're closing out Halloween with White's book about a witch who lures children into a magical apartment and makes them tell her horrifying tales. It'll be evident very quickly that we're quite taken with the character development, the scope and the speedy pace of the book! The more action-oriented film is also effective, though we *do* have a few quibbles (the plant nursery scene doesn't hold a candle to its book counterpart and we prefer the book's "shared custody" ending). The casting of Krysten Ritter, her Clueless-style costuming is inspired and the witch's candy-facial prosthetics are all spot-on perfection, though. Overall this is a really solid combo!Wanna connect with the show? Join Molly, Monagle, and Donato as they explore maybe the most fun horror movie to grace the Certified Forgotten podcast to-date.

If Joker's an example of a villain-led movie done right, then certainly Brightburn from the same year is its antithesis. An interesting starting point that's weighed down by its dumb characters, boring plot, and lack of imagination. But hey, at least the deaths are cool. We'll breakdown what exactly went wrong, as well as the James Gunn/Disney controversy, Mallie's plan to completely derail Dustin's career, punchable faces, and a hell of a lot more.Brightburn stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Christian Finlayson and Emmie Hunter. David Yarovesky is a director known for Brightburn (2019) and The Hive (2014). Brightburn is an immense innovative horror film best described as If the Kent family found General Zod, instead of Clark Kent. We lovingly describe The Hive as America's best film about vomit. Yes, really. We found Dave to be a shockingly fun, silly, and creative horror connoisseur. We hope you enjoy this episode of Gaming and Gabbing as much as we did making it! Games discussed: Bioshock Infinite, Dragonslayer, Overwatch This episode contains adult language. Produced by Dayeanne Hutton and Amber Plaster.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Last year, at San Diego ComicCon, James Gunn was all set to announce his latest upcoming project. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, he had to pull out of the convention and the announcement never came. The latest film, though, was getting prepared for a 2019 release. That film turned out to be BRIGHTBURN, a film directed by David Yarovesky and written by screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn. After failing to conceive, the Breyers are blessed with an alien child that crashed landed on their Kansas farm. Not sure where he was from, they adopted the boy and brought him up as their own. Now twelve years old, Brandon suddenly discovers that he may have abilities not like other folks. Hidden away in the family barn, the spacecraft begins to transmit messages to him which may cause him to lose self-will. The film is being compared to such movies as CHRONICLE (2012) as well as SUPERMAN (1978). With its plot of a young boy that actually may have super powers, the question is asked what would happen if he was bad? In excellent performances, the Breyers are played by Elizabeth Banks (SLITHER) and DAVID DENMAM (THE OFFICE). Dark Discussions takes a look at this new sci-fi horror film and gives their thoughts. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Join Chris as he analyzes & reviews Brightburn, the 2019 Superhero Horror movie, directed by David Yarovesky & starring Elizabeth Banks. What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? What if a child aspired to something darker? This movie has a premise that practically writes itself (for several reasons...), but does this satisfy BOTH as a comic book film and an R-rated horror flick? How are the scares? How evil is this kid? How gory are the kills? How epic is the story? Is there a fatality that would put Cyclops to shame? Most importantly, how long do you keep ignoring how creepy your child is? Episode 160: The Crew's discussing the evil Superman/Horror film, Brightburn. The opening weekend gross was low for a horror film (and even lower when compared to the average Superhero film), but it's low budget may help it turn a profit. Let's hope it makes money, cause the Crew really wants a sequel. If you like our music intro, click here and listen to more awesome music from aquariusweapon. We went and saw Brightburn, and it was as advertised, but even more gory than I expected. It's not a perfect film, there isn't a lot of character development past the perfunctory set up, and there are some plot threads are fully dropped without explanation, but overall it delivers a very good horror film riffing on the superhero genre. It’s the superman origin story, but instead of him being good, he’s bad. The Breyers are a young couple in Sma... Brightburn, Kansas, that desperately want a baby, but can’t have one of their own. Brandon soon discovers he is completely impervious to harm, has super strength, and can, get this… fly. Brandon does what every good middle american farm boy would do with these new found super powers… He kills and maims anyone that gets in his way towards world domination, including those closest to him. He's just a good ol' mid-western boy Brightburn Critique David is going to complain that this story has been done dozens of times with Superman in the comics. But if you like me aren’t a FUCKING NERD, then this is probably the first depiction of a truly evil superman origin story, at least on film. I think this film accomplished exactly what it set out to do, and was very enjoyable to me. While it is exactly what I expected in terms of plot, it exceeded my expectations with how dark, and especially how gory they went with it. Brightburn is directed by a relative newcomer David Yarovesky, but produced by James Gunn, who is the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies as well as Super, another anti-superhero movie. It is well cast with Elizabeth Banks as Tori, the mother in denial, and David Denman as Kyle, the father that immediately is suspicious. Brandon Breyers, the anti-superman, is played by Jackson A. Dunn which does a great job of maintaining a steely enigmatic gaze. The script doesn’t delve too deeply into character development, but the characters are three dimensional, and react to the events of the film in natural ways. SuperBuy or Rent James Gunn's first Anti-Superhero film.Buy/Rent on Amazon They keep the intentions and internal motivations of Brandon intentionally mysterious up until the time that he starts wreaking havok. Although it didn’t explore as many facets of the anti-superman story as they could have, it delivered on the promise of a really dark story in an effective and efficient manner. I really enjoyed it. Score for Brightburn 7/10 Brightburn Spoilers Expand for spoilers The most important thing to get out of the way is that Roy from The Office is in this movie. David reminded me about 50 times throughout. The first shot we see in the movie is the camera panning over a bookshelf full of books about infertility. The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, wonder if there's anything good left in the world after viewing Brightburn (2019). The highly anticipated film, produced by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, mashes up the superhero and horror movie genres by posing the simple question: what if Superman wasn't a good guy, even as a child?Directed by David Yarovesky, the film stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, and Meredith Hagner. It debuted to mixed reviews and a modest box office haul, but we think you'll be very interested to hear where we stand...
MOVIE REVIEW: What if Superman was evil? That's been the marketing focus of Brightburn since day one. It's been the question everyone's wondered about, and at the very least, it makes for a very interesting high concept advertisement. But a film is more than a concept, and what we watch in the theater lays testament to what we hype up during the seasons leading up to release. So, now that it's out, what's the strange amalgamation of Superhero and Horror genre like on the big screen? Brightburn is Rated R for horror violence/bloody images, and language. It features David Denman, Elizabeth Banks, and Jackson A. Dunn. Directed by David Yarovesky. Tune in Wednesday nights for new episodes of Cinematic Doctrine! James Gunn brings us the latest superhero flick, but this time it’s violent, it’s scary, and takes a different spin the whole “Superman” concept. You know how it goes – a young alien boy lands on Earth, realises he has superpowers, then uses them to terrorise the surrounding town. This is Brightburn. Directed by David Yarovesky, Brightburn introduces Tori and Kyle Breyer (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman), who live a quiet life on their farm in Brightburn, Kansan, trying to have a child – struggling due to infertility issues. One night a spaceship falls from the sky near their farm with a baby boy inside. Deciding to adopt the child as their own, the Breyers name him Brandon. Twelve years later, Brandon (Jackson A Dunn) discovers that he has superhuman strength, super speed, heat vision, and he can fly. Brandon grows more disobedient and disrespectful towards his parents, and strange and violent occurrences begin happening to people connected to Brandon, leading the Breyers to view their adopted son as something to be feared.

I just finished watching Brightburn less than 15 minutes ago and boy am I shook. It's a pretty scary and gory film and very unexpected. It is produced by James Gunn from the Guardians of the Galaxy. Directed by David Yarovesky which has done another film called the Hive which I may check out after watching this. I don't know how this film will do box office wise because a lot of movie going public want their superheroes flawed but not this flawed. The movie goers are still in the 'superheroes should be good' phase. This film definitely breaks from that. I mean, Jackson A. Dunn, who plays Bradon Breyer who plays the evil version of Clark Kent, is definitely super but not a hero. He is equally parts sweet, innocent then creepy. He is a very good actor and his transition from regular sweet boy to amoral and homicidal is very good. He can play both parts equally well. I love the whole concept, the writing, the pace and the acting. The concept is original, basically along the premise of," What if Clark Kent/Superman was not a good person? What would he do with all of those superpowers?" The movie just adeptly applies the concept and although it is quite a scary movie, with a few jump scenes, great suspense and buildup. Elizabeth Banks plays the doting mother really well. In fact, you can say that this is her story. David Denman plays the Dad and also does justice to his role. The film spends a lot of time building up their family history and their relationship. That is why it can be heartbreaking to see how their son's new-found powers affect their family. I definitely love the film. It's scary, it's original. The supporting actors are really great. The movie keeps you at the edge of your seat and you don't know what is going to happen next. The ending is unexpected and well just jaw-dropping. In fact, there are really a couple of 'jaw-dropping' scenes here and that is sort of a hint. If you get my drift. I would recommend this movie. It's a horror film that is heart-breaking and a film about family as well. Also, it asks a question of: can you really avoid your own destiny? I would give this movie a 4 over 5 popcorns because I just love horror films. And this one, really kept me at the edge of my seat. Made me jump a few times. The storytellers just really pushed the envelope of what is acceptable in 'superhero' films. This is not your ordinary Superman or Avenger hero. This is along the lines of Damien. If you love horror films. If you love gory films. If you love superhero films. If you love good story-telling and twist endings. This movie is for you.
