What does it look like to wait with intentionality rather than apathy or impatience? For the final episode of season 5, co-hosts Heather and Keane are joined by TeachBeyond Executive Vice Presidents Howard Dueck and Brian Delamont as they reflect on Acts 1 and waiting with urgency. Acts 1:4-26 “Waiting for something definitive is so much different than waiting for something that's undefined.” -Brian Delamont “The fact that they are together in the waiting brings growth to one another in that time.” -Brian Delamont Romans 8:22-25 Pursuing God's Will Together by Ruth Haley Barton “It's our transformation in the waiting that actually enables us to act with love and wisdom in the world. There's no quick and easy way to get there.” -Brian Delamont “He has given me accountability and responsibility to be involved in some level of decision making, but the Kingdom does not hinge on the decision I'm about to make in that moment, and that helps right-size the decision for me.” -Brian Delamont “Our hope isn't on ourselves or our plans, but it's on the Lord.” -Howard Dueck The Critical Journey: Stages in the Life of Faith by Janet Hagberg and Robert Guelich “Take this period of waiting as a period of eager anticipation of what God [is] going to do next, as opposed to slipping into apathy or impatience or precipitated action. That's where our whole soul is being shaped in that time.” -Howard Dueck “God is combusting something new within us.” -Howard Dueck “Rather than being stuck in this empty void of life, we have the opportunity to do what we can do because in God's sovereignty, in His love and care for you, in His shepherding, you are right where you are and He's right there with you.” -Brian Delamont “There's this inner compulsion that builds with the waiting [...] and this growing our longing and capacity for the fullness of the Spirit so that then He can speak through us.” -Howard Dueck “Who you are wherever you are in that waiting stage is exactly what you're going to be able to bring to wherever that other place may be.” -Brian Delamont “This is your time. Seep yourself in Scripture, in your craft that you're learning, become all that you can be within your time of waiting. This is your apprenticeship.” -Howard Dueck Matthew 25:14-30 Complete our Season 5 survey here. Thanks for your feedback! MONTH Reflection: What am I waiting for? In Part 6 of "The Path Is Made By Walking, Ronnie quotes Janet Hagberg, words that serve as proper commentary to the Emmaus Road experience of Luke 24: “Now we surrender to God's will, but with our eyes wide open…for we have been changed. We sense a looser grip on ourselves and all we have believed, because our confidence is in God - not what we think about God. Our primary motivation in life becomes the desire to love and to live honestly. We acquire an inner peace and calmness because we grow into the full awareness that God truly loves us. We learn how to go about our lives with patience and freshness, a vitality that can only come from God. There is no striving, just evolving. The healing experience is so personal and so profound, we may find it difficult to express.” How do we get this? Persistence. Muddling through. Surrender. Being melted down and re-formed. Anger. Tears. Shaking your fist or the middle finger at heaven. Kicking and screaming on the floor. Trying out atheism for a while. Shunning anything religious, spiritual, prayerful, or anything like you knew in the past. But if you are a person with a bent toward faith - if you are a person who discovers that the eternity planted in your heart cannot be ignored - you will begin to poke around in the ashes for the bones. You will begin to put the pieces back together, and maybe - just maybe - you will have an Emmaus experience: “Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him…They said to each other, 'Didn't our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road.”
As this journey down the Emmaus Road continues, Ronnie speaks about the times when faith seems lost: "Before you change, you will be confused. It's natural. It's to be expected. Once you are on the road, you will encounter roadblocks - intense seasons of questioning; dark nights of the soul; arrows shot toward heaven that never seem to hit their target. Janet Hagberg rightfully calls it, 'The Wall.' You crash up against it and things go to pieces. "It feels like you are losing your faith and possibly losing your mind...like everything you were ever told about God or believed about God is wrong... all your old prayers and Bible verses and routines that used to do the trick have lost their power. Your unassailable, bullet-proof solutions fail, and no amount of praying harder, believing more, reading your Bible, or rededication will remedy you. In the words of William Butler Yates: 'Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; anarchy is loosed upon the world.'"

In today's episode, we're making our way to Fargo, North Dakota to talk to Annie Wood.I first met Annie through Startup Champions Network and was fortunate enough to visit her community during our Fall Summit in 2018.Shortly thereafter, Annie left the host organization and started a new chapter of her life.Today, she shares what was going on behind the scenes at the time, how she regrouped after leaving the profession as an entrepreneurial ecosystem builder, and what this next chapter looks like.We talked about the grief of letting go of what could have been, and how to find your way back to yourself when you're letting go of a part of your professional identity.Annie Wood thinks of herself as a combination of life experiences - she's a learning facilitator, an experiential educator, and a community builder. Her day-to-day work in student life on a college campus is really the perfect mash-up to use the skills she's developed. In her role, she helps folks explore who they are and where they want to go - through formal programs, mentorship, and encouraging them to follow their curiosities.Annie is a believer in lifelong learning and aims to live with a growth mindset. She is passionate about providing opportunities for folks at any stage of life to explore who they are and how to live a life that matches their values. She believes that each day, we make choices about how we'll contribute to our communities - and that is a reflection of our values. So Annie chooses to have a positive outlook and to validate people for who they are. Outside of her daily work and facilitating trainings, Annie especially loves creating or attending community events with a hint of whimsy and being part of groups that are just a little bit quirky, because the people with the wildest ideas are usually the most fun to be around. Listen to the full episode to hear: How Annie used counseling to help her come to terms with needing to quit and how to let go and process grief Why she took a month for Annie-tober, and why she still does it to this day Why Annie believes in having a personal manifesto of her values How Annie used her network to remind her of what kind of work brings her joy as she looked for the next thing How Annie's current role allows her to empower students to create community Learn more about Annie Wood: Instagram: @annie_likethemusical Connect with Annie on LinkedIn Learn More About Anika Horn: Website: www.socialventurers.com Instagram: SocialVenturers Newsletter: Sign up for Impact Curator Resources: The Inventurers: Excursions in Life and Career Renewal, Janet Hagberg, Richard J. This season Paul Joslin, Larry Renoe, and Alyssa Frisbie are pulling apart Christian beliefs and talking about the process of deconstruction. They're covering the most questioned topics within Christianity (atonement, purity culture, patriarchy, suffering, etc.) and dissecting Scripture, in hopes that it will help all of us better understand what we believe. So many of us struggle with our inability to quantify or measure God. While we appreciate His infinite nature and His lavish love and do not want to worship a God we can fully understand, we are far more accustomed to swimming in the sea of: Transactional relationships If this then that statements Of linear and logical progression; for example, When I work hard, I get the promotion. Chuck DeGroat has written a fantastic book titled, When Narcissism Comes to Church, which he unpacks for us in this episode. Most of us who are in positions of spiritual leadership have some tendencies toward narcissism. Many of us want to be loved and respected--and sometimes we think of ourselves as pretty awesome. But then there are those who are truly narcissistic, who are so unhealthy that they leave a wake of misery and destruction in their ministries.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Chuck DeGroat is Professor of Pastoral Care at Western Theological Seminary and author of When Narcissism Comes to Church. As a young pastor, Chuck started to notice the way narcissistic pastors were preferred.Chuck DeGroat discusses why the church is a breeding ground for narcissism. The church has a strange love affair with power, despite the fact that our faith is based on the crucified One.Chuck DeGroat explains what he means by “healthy narcissism.” Children, for instance, need to believe they are the center of their parents’ world. A certain narcissism is developmentally appropriate for children at that age.Richard Rohr uses the language of “first half of life” and “second half of life” to refer to healthy narcissism.Chuck DeGroat describes how narcissism manifests itself in the church.Serving in a church led by a narcissist can be a traumatic experience.Pastors need to be “wounded healers,” as Henri Nouwen said.Markus shares how he has grown to care for people more than he used to.If you are serving under a narcissistic leader, it’s helpful to get therapy for yourself to unpack what is going on.Chuck DeGroat shares his own experience of spiritual growth as he has studied narcissism. You can find out more about Chuck DeGroat at chuckdegroat.net.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Chuck DeGroatWebsite – www.chuckdegroat.netBooks mentioned:Narcissism in the Church, by Chuck DeGroatBeyond Thingification, by Markus WatsonFalling Upward, by Richard RohrThe Critical Journey, by Janet Hagberg and Robert GuelichThe Wounded Healer, by Henri NouwenInstructions to leave a review of Spiritual Life and Leadership:Click HERE.Click on the link that says, "Listen on Apple Podcasts."In the window that opens, click the button that says, "Open Link." Talking back on how to survive during this prolonged Covid crisis. No physical touch? Meetings all look the same, meeting fatigue? Days running together? Our pastors talk about the struggles and share some of our community's ways that they're enduring these tough times. Jonny interviews Drew Hart who just released a new book "Who Will Be a Witness." Jonny delves deep with Drew on his new book, including Jesus' participation in political action, what Christian Supremacy is and how it affects the church, on white supremacy, economic injustice, and more. A deep conversation filled with fresh ways of thinking about the Bible and strategies for what social justice we can participate in now. I. Hart is an author, activist, and professor in theology in the Bible and Religion department at Messiah University with ten years of pastoral experience. Hart majored in Biblical Studies at Messiah College as an undergrad, he attained his MDiv with an urban concentration from Biblical Theological Seminary, and he received his PhD in theology and ethics from Lutheran Theological Seminary-Philadelphia. Dr. Hart’s dissertation considered how Christian discipleship, as framed by Black theologies and contemporary Anabaptism, gesture the western Church towards untangling the forces of white supremacy and the inertia of western Christendom which have plagued its witness in society for too long. As two traditions that emerged from the underside of violent and oppressive western Christian societies, he found Black theologies and Anabaptism each repeatedly turning to the particularity of Jesus in the gospel narratives, ultimately calling for an ethic of liberation in the Black Church and an ethic of peacemaking in the Anabaptist tradition. Hart finds the practice of reading Jesus not only for the Church, but also against it, to be a vital dimension in salvaging western Christianity from itself [...] Drew Hart’s Twitter handle: https://twitter.com/DruHart Inverse Podcast with Jarrod McKenna and Drew Hart: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/inverse-podcast/id1358332600?i=1000427565197 Who Will Be A Witness by Drew Hart: https://heraldpress.com/books/who-will-be-a-witness/ //Spiritual Show and Tell// The Critical Journey by Janet Hagberg and Robert Guelich: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/311089.The_Critical_Journey //Transition Music// Some transition music was sourced from Free Music Archive (freemusicarchive.org): Band: Uncan Song: Interpolation https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Uncanny/Third/Interpolation Used under Creative Commons License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/ //About this Podcast// Resist and Restore is a podcast by Circle of Hope. Michelle delves into Real Power: Stages of Personal Power in Organizations by Janet O. Hagberg. She explores the power continuum, the dark side of each stage, and more. From the back cover: "Janet O. Hagberg has written a dynamic book about power—real, personal power for forward-looking people in organizations who want to harness their own power for the common good. "I wrote this book," says Hagberg, "to transform the way we think about power and leadership. It takes people on a journey beyond achievement and success to a stance in which power comes from their inner core and they lead from their souls." There is no doubt that the world is ready for a new model of leadership. In this third edition, Janet Hagberg addresses much that she has learned from her readers. The result is a deepening of the descriptions of each stage, a new way to think about the dark side of each stage, new stories of each stage derived from her readers, a connection to the spirituality expressed at each stage, as well a description of "The Wall" between Stages Four and Five. Throughout the book, the author adds more of her personal story to illustrate her experiences and observations of each of the stages of power."
One of the most profound books I read in 2019 was titled "Stages of Faith" by Janet Hagberg and Robert Guelich. They walk through the 6 stages of faith in the life of a follower of Jesus. In this sermon, we examine all the stages of faith and what they look like in our lives. Teacher: Eric Williams
Janet Hagberg and Kelly Chatman, her friend and pastor. interview each other as an example of a way to better understand and empathize with each other's stories about race, discrimination and faith. They both describe an example of what racial reconciliation looks like in real life. And they end the podcast with a moving example of deep racial healing. Interview questions include: What was your first experience of a white/black person? Could you give an example or two of how you have personally been discriminated against as a black person/woman? What was one of your hardest experiences with a white/black person? What was your most memorable healing experiences with a white/black person? How has your faith informed race relations for you? What would you like to say to white/black people? Would you like to share a current story of a racial conversation that has healing or reconciliation potential?

Jason Feffer is an evangelist for the spiritual disciplines. For over twenty years he has been helping people follow Jesus in their everyday lives with his teaching and writing. Currently, he pastors The Practice, a practice-based contemplative ministry at Willowcreek Church. Today, Jason shares how he discovered spiritual disciplines, the way disciplines have shaped him, and why it's okay to use different disciplines than those around you. Books play an important role in Jason's journey and he shares how insight from virtual mentors shaped him. Listen to Jason's story now! Stories Jason shared: Growing up in a Roman Catholic church then accepting Christ as a child Realizing Christ is the center of his life Discovering the meaning of discipleship Reading the Bible out of guilt How reading transforms his journey Wrestling with imposter's syndrome Feeling like he didn't belong and how community that brought him out How The Jesus Prayer shaped his journey Why it's okay to use the disciplines that work for you How to pastor a church around practices Great quotes from Jason: My whole life is centered on my relationship with Jesus; everything flows from being a disciple of Jesus. Sometimes the most loving thing is to allow people to be where they are. A spiritual discipline is any practice that helps to cultivate communion with the real presence of Christ in our everyday lives. Because we are all uniquely wired, we will all connect with spiritual disciplines in a different way. This week we spend time talking with Aaron Niequist, worship leader and author of the new book The Eternal Current: How a Practice-based Faith can Save us from Drowning.Aaron is a liturgist, writer, and pastor in the Chicago area. After leading worship at Mars Hill Church (Grand Rapids, MI) and Willow Creek Church (Barrington, IL), he created A New Liturgy - a collection of modern liturgical worship recordings. He then curated a discipleship-focused, formational, ecumenical, practice-based community at Willow Creek called “The Practice”. Aaron recently released a book called The Eternal Current: How a Practice-based Faith can Save us from Drowning, and continues to create resources to help others flesh it out. But that's just job stuff. The best part of his life is his wife Shauna, and their sons Henry and Mac. Find more on Aaron here. We’ve said before that at the heart of all we do is people. Where are the people? What do they need? How can we help them take their next step? One model we’ve used over the course of our lives is The Critical Journey by Janet Hagberg and Robert Guelich. Listen in as Alan and Gem describe the six stages in a life of faith. It is so helpful to see where you are in your journey. It can help you feel validated and understood. It can also help you to see where others are in their journey and give you eyes to see how to encourage them in their process. These stages are not prescriptive or limiting. They simply give vocabulary to our common developmental journey. And for leaders, it can be a helpful way to pray for those in our care.
Troy Watson talks about Stages 5 and 6 of the spiritual development process based on the works of Janet Hagberg, M. Scott Peck, James Fowler, Evelyn Underhill, St. John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila and others.
Troy Watson explores the 2nd stage of spiritual development - Learning and Belonging. Much of this material is based on the spiritual roadmaps provided in the work of Janet Hagberg, James Fowler, Theresa of Avila and others.
Today I read from my favorite “Faith Stage Theory” books and end by talking about what to look for in a “safe” person. These books are so helpful that I would recommend them to anyone going through a faith transition..
