Tony Bates is a professional boxer from Dublin. Unbeaten since his debut in 2011, he last fought in 2018. Nicknamed ‘Irish Psycho', he could just as easily have borrowed the moniker ‘Mi Vida Loca' from the legendary hellraiser Johnny Tapia, because life's been crazy up to this point. Growing up in Clondalkin, he gained a fondness for gambling, alcohol and drugs at an early age – ‘the party life' – and somehow found a way to work his excesses around his burgeoning football and boxing careers. In 2008, with the recession starting to bite back home, he headed Down Under where he was called to the ring. Bates sparred every big name in Australia boxing – from Michael Katsidis to Tim Tszyu, Anthony Mundine to Jeff Horn – and started making waves as one of several Irish up-and-comers on the pro scene. But outside the gym, his addictions were always in his ear, coaxing him towards trouble. Gambling was the big one as his life started to spiral out of control. Eventually, Bates was locked up, deemed a violent offender and stuck in a maximum security facility. After serving his sentence, he was due to be deported back to Ireland but then Covid hit and the Aussies decided to dump him on Christmas Island, an external territory mainly used as a refugee and immigration detention centre. Hundreds of miles from the mainland, with no set date for release, no wifi and no visitors, the detainees rioted - with Bates witnessing it all unfold. He contacted The Rocky Road to tell of his plight, trying to find a way out, and believes that going to the media – and informing the authorities – helped him find his way home. And now he's back in Ireland, back in boxing and looking to get back in a professional ring at the age of 35. He's survived shootings (of the tasering variety), stabbings (giving as good as he got) and hundreds of street fights, but is now living a peaceful life of prayer (he is a devout Muslim) and preparation (under the watchful eye of new coach Phil Sutcliffe). It's an unbelievable story and this is the first time he's told it. In Part 2, Tony discusses more about his sparring stories - including movearounds with the likes of Jorge Linares - descending into a life of petty crime, his time behind bars, being knifed and getting his revenge, the code he lives by, Christmas Island riots and plans for the future. Coming to you from Brisbane the boys are back for another Dos & D Uncut. Just to set the scene...we were coming off two interviews. One with Boxing legend Jeff Horn and the other with the very loose Julian Woods. If you've heard the episode, you'll know what we mean. Just before we started recording, we got the official warning from the venue! So keep that in mind. We accidentally invented one of the greatest games ever which involves one of our favourite topics...music. We play the game live on the show, play along and see if you can beat us. We took a look at the worst DIY gone wrong stories the internet could offer and gee whiz some of these are horrendous. Poor apprentices. Plus, we give you a sample of our latest YouTube video "Try not to Laugh" which is absolutely hysterical and D shares the way he accidentally freaked out a poor unsuspecting member of society. Enjoy the episode guys, we hope you like it! Jeff Horn is the Former WBO Welterweight Champion & Professional Boxer. He finished his professional career with a record of 20 (13 by KO) - 3 - 1. We were lucky enough to sit down with Jeff while in Brisbane and reminisce on his incredible career, life & achievements thus far. From being bullied as a kid and learning self-defence, to becoming World Champion and everything in between, Jeff shared it all. Jeff took us behind the scenes of the historic day he defeated legendary Manny Pacquiao to become World Champion. From the preparation, the build up, the crazy crowd and the final decision, it was amazing to hear it from his perspective. But outside of his accolades, we heard what it takes to become an elite boxer. Jeff shared the grueling times of cutting weight before a fight, boxing phycology, having to sell your own tickets in the early days and even sparring with cocky up and comers that are trying to make a name for themselves. We touched on the concussion debate, the dream fight he wish he had and the one opponent in the ring Jeff really felt had a problem with him! You will love this episode whether you follow the sport or not as Jeff is so lovable and humble! Sit back and enjoy the icon, the legend and the hornet, Jeff Horn! Jeff Horn. The school teacher from Brisbane who became a boxing world champion. With his unassuming personality and friendly disposition, it’s still hard for me to believe that Jeff can step into a ring and literally try and punch someone in the face. Many times. But after our chat I could his passion and determination to be the best. This was an interesting chat because it’s the first person I’ve spoken to, who hasn’t quite retired. He’s not competing, he has no fights lined up, but hasn’t yet hung up the gloves for good. It was a fascinating insight into his thoughts around retirement and whether we still might see him in the ring! A man that truly needs very little introduction. Former World Champion boxer, Jeff Horn is fighting a different kind of fight in recent times. Anti-Bullying. His work as an ambassador for AMAYDA is nothing short of extraordinary. Chatting to Jeff, we get a real understanding of the work he's doing as well as the joy of raising two awesome kids with a third on the way. He handles it all with a smile and a humble, yet positive attitude. Enjoy! https://www.amayda.com.au/
Meg and Jeff Horn, Toms River family law attorney and host of The Bold Sidebar, continue their discussion of 2021 New Jersey Supreme Court decisions. In State v. Steven Bookman, the New Jersey Supreme Court granted cert to address the issue of whether it is permissible for police officers to enter a third party home under the hot pursuit doctrine when they are chasing someone in an attempt to execute an Automated Traffic System warrant and the person flees. Meg and Jeff wrap up their 5-part series on 2021 New Jersey Supreme Court decisions by reviewing State v. Gabriel Garcia in which the New Jersey Supreme Court admonished a prosecutor for exploiting an evidentiary ruling favorable to the State, thereby presenting a false narrative during his closing argument. Justice Albin sternly reminded all prosecutors that they are “required to turn square corners - because their overriding duty is to DO JUSTICE.”
Meg and Jeff Horn, Toms River family law attorney and host of The Bold Sidebar, continue their discussion of 2021 New Jersey Supreme Court decisions. In Episode 3 of this NJ law podcast, Meg and Jeff discuss several cases dealing with New Jersey motor vehicle statutes prohibiting license tag frames that conceal a portion of the license tag and New Jersey motor vehicle statutes prohibiting tinted windows, in terms of when the police can lawfully stop a driver who is violating these laws. In the consolidated appeals of State v. Darius J. Carter and State v. Miguel A. Roman-Rosado, the New Jersey Supreme Court decided to narrowly interpret NJSA 39:3-33, which makes it illegal to have a license plate frame that conceals any part of the tag. Earlier this year the New Jersey Supreme Court granted cert in State v. David L. Smith, a case dealing with NJSA 39:3-74 and -75, the law prohibiting tinted windows. We are anxiously awaiting the Court's decision next year on this issue Although these motor vehicle statutes may seem minor, a stop due to a violation of them may have grave consequences due to the domino effect of a subsequent search and seizure of alleged contraband on the person or on the vehicle of the driver.
Meg and Jeff Horn, Toms River, NJ family law attorney and host of The Bold Sidebar, continue their discussion of 2021 New Jersey Supreme Court decisions. In Episode 2 in this series, Meg and Jeff discuss State v. Kanem Williamson, a unanimous May 10, 2021 decision in which the NJSC upheld the admissibility of the victim's video-taped non-verbal identification of Williamson as the person that shot her 11 months before she died from “complications of multiple gunshot wounds”.
Meg and Jeff Horn, Toms River family law attorney and host of The Bold Sidebar, continue their discussion of 2021 New Jersey Supreme Court decisions. In October and November 2021, the New Jersey Supreme Court granted cert in two cases dealing with Miranda and the admissibility of a defendant's statement to police. In State v. Jamal Wade, the Court agreed to address the question of whether the defendant, who contends that he was not informed of the nature of the charges against him or that he was under arrest, knowingly and voluntarily waived his Miranda rights. In State v. Abayuba-Rivas, the Court agreed to address the question of whether the suppression of the defendant's statement to police due to a violation of his right to counsel requires the suppression of defendant's later statement to the police made the following day. Meg and Jeff discuss these relevant Miranda decisions and the Court's willingness to grant cert to protect an individual from implicating himself when the police have violated his rights. In this series, Meg and Jeff Horn, Toms River, NJ family law attorney and host of The Bold Sidebar, discuss highlights of several 2021 New Jersey Supreme Court decisions and cases it has agreed to hear in 2022. First up in Episode 1 is State v. Lodzinski. On October 6, 2021, in a stunning and highly unusual decision, the New Jersey Supreme Court agreed to reconsider its May 2021 decision affirming the conviction of Michelle Lodzinski for the murder of her 5 1/2 year old son in 1991 after his disappearance from a carnival in Sayreville - a crime that she wasn't charged for until 2014.

But this is a big weekend of boxing so I put together a raw ass episode of myself talking for 45 minutes, nonstop, about this weekend's DAZN, PBC, and ESPN+ cards. I miss audio editing already. Thank you for your patience. Hopefully properly edited episodes return soon.
I'm back, I've been slacking and I'm here to spend the next thirty minutes telling you about Canelo suing DAZN and how boxing is definitely totally back in the Fall.

Staple guest of the (un)Professional Boxing Podcast, Marquis Johns (@weaksauceradio) joins to talk about the upcoming PBC and Top Rank cards on Saturday as well as his thoughts on the future of DAZN, Oscar De La Hoya's comeback, and Jeff Horn vs. Tim Tszyu. Plus, my cat meows a lot and demands dinner. Follow me on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/boxrecgrey And login to Boxrec, it's free: www.boxrec.com
It's a quick one this week, and my heart is ready to talk about boxing running in the COVID era, Top Rank cards falling apart, and Jeff Horn vs. Tim Tszyu. Not my best work, but certainly my drunkest.
I need to get my mind off the bad shit going on, so I drank a bunch of hard seltzer and reviewed the upcoming Top Rank boxing schedule in June! We're drunk! We're back!
This week, Marquis Johns (@weaksauceradio) stops by to talk about the boxing that is rumored to be returning to the United States in June. We also talk about the Boxing Twitter drama from last week including MTK and Ammo Williams sparring footage being uploaded. Part 2 of the Mark Gastineau deep dive coming out next week!
It's the 50th episode of the (un)Professional Boxing podcast, and what better way to celebrate to catch up with Corey Erdman (@corey_erdman) and talk about all the weird boxing merchandise we found on Ebay. Also, some Jeff Horn victory talk. Oh hell yeah.
In what might be the biggest downer episode of the (un)Professional Boxing Podcast, your host tries to cope with the lackluster performances of Jeff Horn and the 6'7" Jr Middleweight and the boring weekend of boxing on the schedule. Short, powerful, dramatic episode. This is boxing chatter at the highest level. End Song: "Resignation of a Groomsmen's Speech" - Harrison Hartley
Corey Erdman (@corey_erdman) stops by with another visit to the (un)Professional Boxing Podcast to tell us tales of calling the Kovalev-Yarde fight for the ESPN+ international audience. We also chat Jeff Horn vs. The Part Time Male Stripper, the 6'8" Jr Middleweight, The Definitely 27 Year Old Cuban Heavyweight and I guess Lomachenko-Campbell as well. A wholesome conversation that features Corey cursing out The Undertaker! Tune in now.
Who's Calling Christian went beserk today with Shaun Micallef, Jim Beaver, Jeff Horn, James Sherry and a VERY special caller whose name rhymes with Shmames Shmorden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Unprofessional Boxing Podcast is solo this week with new corporate sponsorship! This week, we talk Williams-Hurd, Jack Swagger, Jeff Horn's future, WBSS, Deontay Wilder and so much more!
A longer episode this week, but I promise it's worth it! This week we're doing by Canadian boxing staple and boxing poster design master Jason Toufexis (@JasonToufexis). We recap the boxing weekend by venting our frustration over the Golden Boy stream and the Easter-Barthelemy fight, yet sending our respects to DAZN. In addition, we preview the many Canadians in action this weekend (Artur Beterbiev, Steven Butler, and Erik Bazinyan) and Canelo-Jacobs, of course. We also have an excellent Jeff Horn update and Jason tells us a tale of a riot that took place in the ring two years ago that featured a cooler full of drinks getting thrown.
