176. From Cancer to Comeback: Joey Raats' Fight for Life and Hockey

Warriors Unmasked

In this deeply inspiring episode of Warriors Unmasked, Chuck Thuss sits down with professional hockey player Joey Raats, who shares his remarkable journey of battling cancer, reclaiming his health, and stepping back onto the ice with a renewed purpose. Joey's story is one of unwavering faith, perseverance, and the power of surrendering to God's plan. A promising hockey career took Joey across the world, from the U.S. to Canada, and even overseas to France and England. But in May of 2022, life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had metastasized throughout his body. What followed was an unimaginable battle—one filled with pain, uncertainty, and moments where Joey came dangerously close to losing his life. Yet, through it all, Joey never lost hope. With the steadfast support of his wife, his unshakable faith in God, and an unbreakable warrior's spirit, he fought back—mind, body, and soul. Key Takeaways from Joey's Journey: The Power of Faith in Overcoming Fear: Joey shares how his diagnosis tested his faith, but ultimately, surrendering to God's plan became his source of strength and healing. The Importance of Perspective: Rather than seeing cancer as his identity, Joey made a conscious decision to view it as just a part of his journey, not who he was. The Role of Support Systems: Joey credits his wife's unwavering strength as a key factor in his survival, reminding us all how crucial it is to have a strong support network during life's darkest moments. Healing Through Mind, Body, and Spirit: Joey dives into the holistic approach that helped him recover, from mindset training to proper nutrition, sleep, exercise, and alternative healing methods like infrared saunas and breathwork. A New Purpose: Today, Joey is not only back on the ice, but he's also using his platform to inspire and educate others about health, resilience, and faith-based healing. Finding Strength in Surrender One of the most powerful moments in this episode is when Joey recalls the exact moment he surrendered his fight to God. Lying in an infrared sauna, after months of battling excruciating pain and undergoing intense chemotherapy, he had a divine moment of peace—a realization that God had him in His hands, no matter what happened. That surrender, rather than being a sign of giving up, became the turning point in his healing journey. What's Next for Joey? Now fully focused on his recovery and professional hockey career, Joey is training harder than ever, putting on 20 pounds of muscle, and preparing for his next big opportunity in the sport he loves. But more than that, he's sharing his story to inspire others—helping people understand that they are stronger than their circumstances and that healing is possible. Through his faith, discipline, and commitment to holistic health, Joey is proving that even the toughest battles can be won with the right mindset and unwavering belief. Listen to the Full Episode Joey's journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and this episode will leave you feeling empowered and encouraged to face your own challenges with faith and determination. If you or someone you know is battling a difficult season, share this episode—you never know who might need to hear Joey's message of hope. Can safeguarding women's health and holding the FDA accountable hinge on a controversial Supreme Court decision? Today, we dive into the profound implications of the Supreme Court's recent ruling on the abortion pill, joined by Dr. Ingrid Skop. We'll address the critical lawsuit where pro-life doctors challenged the FDA, arguing that the removal of essential safeguards around abortion drugs like Mifepristone and Misoprostol posed severe risks to women. Dr. Skop brings her medical expertise to the table, outlining the dangers these drugs present when used without medical supervision. We'll also explore how states like Missouri, Kansas, and Idaho are stepping up to represent affected women, pushing for greater FDA accountability.Moving beyond the courtroom, our conversation takes a deep look at the ethical and cultural landscape of abortion in the United States. Dr. Skopp provides a compelling narrative on the need for a national discourse about the inherent value of human life. We scrutinize the cultural ramifications since Roe v. Wade, the demographic crisis tied to low fertility rates, and the ethical pitfalls in treating pregnancy as a medical condition. Engaging with the historical context of euthanasia in Europe, we draw parallels to the current U.S. scenario, emphasizing the broader societal consequences of failing to protect the unborn. Join us for a thought-provoking episode that challenges conventional healthcare narratives and underscores the importance of supporting both unborn children and their mothers.

URGENT NEED FOR KIDNEY DONOR!  Please join us as we sit down with Kendra Tann, a mother of four who bravely opens up about their family's need of a kidney donor to save their daughter's life, however this isn't the first time they have walked this path.  When Kendra noticed her oldest daughter Sydney's high blood pressure and liver abnormalities, little did she know that it was the onset of a condition that would transform their life. The diagnosis of cranioectodermal dysplasia came as a shock and propelled them into a world where rare genetic disorders are not just medical terms but everyday realities. As Kendra shares her heartfelt story, you'll be moved by her strength and the journey towards Sydney's life-saving kidney transplant at the tender age of four. Her story is one of courage and resilience, bringing much-needed awareness to the realities families face when dealing with similar health battles. The path from diagnosis to transplant is never walked alone. This episode is a tribute to the support systems and the profound connections that grow within the transplant community. Kendra opens up about the physical and emotional toll of becoming a living donor for her daughter, Sydney, a role that comes with its own set of post-surgery obstacles. Yet, amidst the talks of unexpected pregnancy and the balancing act of family life, there's an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the community that stands with them.  Just a few years after Sydney's transplant, Kendra and her family are faced with the same diagnosis as they race to find another living donor for their youngest daughter, Olina. The journey Kendra and her family have been on and will continue to be, illuminates the process and support network for those considering the selfless act of organ donation. In this conversation, we aim to empower our listeners with information and avenues for support. Every act of engagement, from sharing our podcast to reaching out, strengthens the fabric of our community. When Roe vs. Wade was overturned, Benjamin Watson was happy. But he also felt acutely aware of a complicated truth: millions of people felt devastated by the decision. And so the question became: what's next? On today's episode of The Russell Moore Show, Watson—writer, speaker, and former NFL tight end—shares insights into the state of abortion in America. He and Moore talk about the ways that racial injustice relates to abortion. And they discuss how Christians can engage in the pursuit of public justice for women and the unborn alike.  Watson, who serves as the VP of Strategic Relationships for the Human Coalition and co-founded the One More Foundation with his wife, talks about his recent book The New Fight for Life: Roe, Race, and a Pro-Life Commitment to Justice. He and Moore consider the gaps in how the church has addressed abortion historically, and what it may look like to do better in the future. And they consider how God might ask Christians to engage in impacting just one person. In a post Roe Vs. Wade society the question remains, “Now what?” How will christians in America continue fighting for every life made in the image of God? How can churches and christians have a womb to tomb pro-life ethic? Is it possible to break through political barriers and culture wars to love and serve those in need?I am thrilled to have this conversation with former NFL player Benjamin Watson. Along with being a former tight end, Benjamin is a writer, a speaker, and an activist. He is a college football studio analyst with the SEC Network, and he serves as VP of strategic relationships with the Human Coalition, one of the largest pro-life and pro-women organizations in the country. Along with his wife, Kirsten, he is the founder of The Watson 7 Foundation, a nonprofit focused on strengthening families. They currently reside in Georgia with their seven children. On today's episode Benjamin and I discuss his new book, The New Fight For Life. Abortions in America disproportionately affect African-American women with 76% of abortion-determined women saying they would prefer to parent if their circumstances were different. You'll hear practical ways churches and christians can serve women facing unplanned pregnancies, and the importance of churches providing post-abortion counseling and care. Friends, as we look through scriptures it's easy to see that God has called us to have a pro-life commitment to justice for His image bearers. I pray you lean in and listen and respond to how God moves your heart.
