Dreaming of starting a private practice with a specialization? You're going to love this episode of Private Practice Success Stories! I sat down with Kaitlin Malcahey, a pediatric speech-language pathologist with a private practice called Competent Communicators. She first started thinking about private practice while feeling burned out during COVID, and by 2022 she took the leap and did it. I got to know Kaitlin during her time in The Grow Your Private Practice program, and it has been so amazing to watch her business shift to become AAC focused and watch her create the work-life balance she craved. She shares how she loves working with kids and how she's becoming known for specializing in AAC. Kaitlin also shares the fulfillment she gets from being able to work with clients in a more personalized, meaningful way.Kaitlin is an SLP with over 8 years of experience who opened her own practice in January of 2023. She specializes in AAC, gestalt language processing and sensory-informed play-based therapy. She particularly enjoys working with clients 6 and under and incorporating their families into therapy sessions. She has taken the Meaningful Speech course for natural language acquisition, countless AAC courses and Jessie Ginsburg sensory trainings. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:When Kaitlin decided to start her own private practiceHow she saved money on getting her own clinic spaceWhy she decided to specialize in AAC clientsHow she got her first referrals in her private practiceWhy there really are enough clients to go around for everyoneHow utilizing Google Reviews can help grow your private practiceHow private practice helps you make more of an impact on the clients you work withThe work-life balance you get when you have a private practiceI hope you enjoyed hearing from Kaitlin! I love how she created her own private practice so she could work with more AAC clients. She is a perfect example of someone who wanted more work-life balance, and found that and so much more through private practice. If you would like to know more about our Private Practice School and the Programs that we offer to support SLPs and OTs who want our help to start and grow their practices, please visit PrivatePracticeSchool.com/resources.Whether you want to start a private practice or grow your existing private practice, I can help you get the freedom, flexibility, fulfillment, and financial abundance that you deserve. Do you consider yourself a sensitive person when it comes to sounds, smells, physical sensations, or taste?Do you judge this kind of sensitivity in yourself or others? Many people feel caught in the vice grip of having a nervous system that responds strongly to various kinds of sensory stimulation while also feeling judged and deeply misunderstood for being sensitive to things that others appear not to be bothered by in their day-to-day lives. If you feel like you are too much or know someone who feels and responds to various stimuli deeply, then today's show is for you.My guests are speech and language pathologists who, like many, many support specialists, join me in my commitment to create spaces that welcome all and move away from ableist standards we have on what it means to be ‘normal' and healthy. And they are committed to helping kids and the adults in their lives show up authentically without masking and hiding to appease the way things have always been done. Jessie Ginsburg is a Sensory Integration trained speech-language pathologist and CEO of Pediatric Therapy Playhouse, a top-rated clinic in Los Angeles. It's neurodiversity celebration week! I did not plan this but what a better guest to talk about sensory differences in neurodiverse folks that Jessie Ginsburg.I cannot quite remember when was the first time I encountered Jessie Ginsburg's work. It was probably as my son worked with a speech and language pathologist, an SLP, to unleash his bilingual super powers. I first found out about her instagram account, sensory.slp. Jessie Ginsburg is an SLP based in Los Angeles, a mom of 4 and has her own SLP play-based and sensory friendly private practice, the Pediatric Therapy Playhouse. Her Instagram account is filled with so much knowledge about how to integrate sensory practices to help kids better regulate while learning. I was hooked. But back then, her content and trainings were geared towards her peers, other SLPs. Basically, when Jessie first started working with autistic kids, she learned about sensory processing but could not find any training that would teach her and her peers how to integrate that in their work.So Jessie registered to everything she could find for OTs, PTs and others. Eventually, she felt comfortable enough to create the training she wanted to register for herself. Huge hit.Jessie Ginsburg is interested in creating a ripple effect: rather than loading her schedule to run from patient to patient, she prefers to focus on making a difference among her peers and parents to truly impact patients' lives. You probably think well she was born to do this. Maybe. But did you know that initially she was planning on becoming a wine maker? Find out the whole story in this episode! An episode by Anne-Fleur Andrle, mixing and sound design by Alice Krief.Find me on Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/annefleurandrle Hosted on Acast. When she returned to southern California, she opened her own practice and now trains other therapists in how to better support their autistic students.    Show Highlights:   Jessie explains the basics of sensory integration and how it affects our behaviors and reactions Why therapists and teachers need to have more training in sensory integration to help kids learn to regulate themselves How kids are classified in IEP meetings as lazy, defiant, etc. when no one understands what they are trying to communicate Why working with kids on regulation and engagement helps solve a lot of speech and language problems in natural ways How the system is overlooking integral, foundational pieces, like why kids feel loved, safe, and connected when they establish relationships with those around them How Jessie's sensory certificate programs are training therapists all over the world  Why we need to teach kids the WHY of regulation strategies so they can incorporate them and learn to initiate them on their own How self-advocacy comes when kids learn sensory strategies for themselves Why sensory strategies shouldn't be labeled as a “break” but should be built into learning How acceptance, understanding, and normalization come when kids learn early that everyone is different in how they learn and cope How social media is helping promote a newfound acceptance of disabilities and limitations  Links/Resources: Thank you for listening!  Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to the show to receive every new episode delivered straight to your podcast player every Tuesday. Continuing our recent conversations on Autism Spectrum Disorder and Sensory Processing Disorder, today's guest and I discuss the ways communication is impacted. Jessie Ginsburg joined the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast and shares her approach of helping the whole child.    Jessie is a Speech-Language Pathologist in Los Angeles, the creator of ASD from the Inside Out and founder of the Pediatric Therapy Playhouse. She has found that when a child is not regulated, communication is not their focus and with this knowledge she inspires new ways of thinking about her approach as an SLP. She not only provides support for children and families, but she strives to help others truly understand and accept a child's differences.   Show Notes: [2:49] - Jessie shares how and why she got interested and involved in sensory processing. [3:44] - In order to communicate, we need to be regulated. [5:05] - Jessie gives an analogy using a visualization of three baskets: Language, Emotions, and Body. [6:49] - When there's a lot going on in our body due to sensory processing, it is hard to regulate emotions and communicate. [8:16] - Up to 95% of autistic adults report that they have sensory processing differences. [9:51] - Jessie dug deeper into learning more from the autistic community and has many friends who are autistic adults. [11:10] - What is the difference between Person-First language and Identity-First language? [12:39] - Many parents will try to change their children rather than embracing who they are and giving them the skills to succeed. [14:58] - There is a difference between trying to “fix” a child and supporting them with their sensory processing. [16:03] - A common hypersensitivity in Autism is to sound. These children may struggle communicating and behaving in a busy environment, like a classroom. [17:28] - There are ways to modify environments and provide support for children and families, but how can we make more institutional changes to accept their needs? [19:30] - The education system and how we view neurodiversity as a culture needs to be examined. [20:47] - Try to figure out if it is fair for a child to regulate themselves or if an adult should step in to co-regulate. [22:01] - Self-regulation requires being able to logically think through a problem, the solutions, and then implement.  [23:04] - As parents and caregivers, the best thing we can do for a child is to validate them. [24:24] - When co-regulating, you are also building a connection with the child. [25:21] - It is really easy to become frustrated, but Jessie reminds us that we have to be a calming resource for children struggling with regulation. [27:39] - Jessie offers a course and she has different kinds of therapists joining.   About Our Guest: Jessie is a Sensory Integration trained speech-language pathologist, creator of ASD from the Inside Out, and founder of Pediatric Therapy Playhouse, a top-rated speech & language clinic in Los Angeles. Have you ever worked with students who have trouble engaging in a session? If you have, then you'll love this conversation with Jessie Ginsburg. As a speech pathologist and the CEO of Pediatric Therapy Playhouse in Los Angeles, Jessie helps young kids on the autism spectrum build foundational skills. For SLPs, one of the biggest misconceptions is that we're supposed to immediately start working on speech when a child walks in the door. But without foundational skills in place, we won't be able to have an improvement in speech. That's why Jessie focuses on three areas first before diving into speech therapy. You'll hear how she uses regulation, engagement, and motivation to build that foundation for her clients.Therapy can't occur in a child until they're in the optimal level of arousal. Think of the challenge of teaching an “Eeyore” energy level child, or a “Tigger” energy level child. Using alerting or calming activities, Jessie talks about how she gets a student's energy centered just right so that work can begin.Motivation is so specific to each student that it will take some sleuthing to uncover what makes a student want to learn. Jessie loves involving parents to help her get the low-down on what students like, and she often collaborates with parents to see a child's sensory preferences.Collaborating with other speech-language pathologists can help you strategize when you're stuck on how to help a child with autism. Connect with Jessie's Facebook group, or visit ABA Speech for more tips and advice. What's Inside:Hear how Jessie aims to go as long as possible without bringing out a toy in a therapy session.Because every child brings daily challenges with them, Jessie practices flexibility in her practice to meet those challenges. How can you increase a student's attention to a task once they're in the perfect optimal space?
