About our Lead Minister: Rev. Marta Flanagan began her ministry as our twentieth called minister at First Parish in the fall of 2009. She is a genuine and forthright preacher. In conversation she is direct and engaging. She speaks of prayer with as much ease as she laughs at human foibles. We call her “Marta.” Marta is a religious liberal, a theist, a feminist, and a lover of the woods. As a student of American history at Smith College she was captivated by the stories of social reformers who were motivated and sustained by their faith. That led her to consider the ministry and to study at Harvard Divinity School from where she was graduated in 1986. She was the first woman minister in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, serving at the First Universalist Church there (1987-1997). She served in a co-ministry at South Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, (1997-2005) from where she is minister emerita. Marta served as interim minister in Montpelier, Vermont (2008-2009). She is trained as a spiritual director. For three years she lived in the Vermont woods practicing voluntary simplicity and the spiritual life. Marta enjoys the vitality of First Parish and our strong sense of community. She celebrates the yearning for depth and the desire to make a difference in the world that she finds here.

"Jesus kalder også ikke bare til at ligne ham, men følges med ham" var overskriften over Jóannis Fonsdals prædiken i Emdrup Kirke 22. sept. 2024. Jesu kaldelse er langt mere end en opfordring til at efterligne ham; det er en invitation til at følges med ham. I prædiken dykkede han ned i Jesu møde med Levi, hvor Jesus ikke bare tilgiver, men kalder ham til et nyt liv – et liv i fællesskab med ham. Ligesom ny vin kræver nye sække, kalder Jesus os til at lade os forvandle indefra og følges med ham i livet, døden og evigheden. Spørgsmålet er: Hvor er Jesus i vores liv i dag? Og er vi klar til at svare på hans kald?

Prædiken over Joh 5,1-15 ved Jóannis Fonsdal 1. sept. 2024 i Emdrup Kirke Ved Bethesdas Dam ligger mange syge mennesker og håber på helbredelse. En dag kommer Jesus forbi og helbreder én af de mange. Mon ikke der var flere af de andre syge ved Betesda dam, som lå tilbage med spørgsmålet: Hvorfor ikke mig? Hvorfor hjælper Jesus ham, og ikke mig? Måske føler du, at Jesus også har forbigået dig. Du beder og tror på bønnens kraft, men oplever, at der ikke sker noget. Virker det at bede til Gud? Vi skal høre en personlig fortælling om en oplevelse med sygdom og Guds hjælp. Hvordan tro kan give mening og håb, selv når helbredelsen udebliver. Og at vi kan finde trøst i, at Gud altid er med os, også når vi ikke forstår hans handlinger.

Prædiken ved Jóannis Fonsdal, Midfaste søndag, 10-03-2024. Tekst: Joh 6,24-37. Budskabet til os på denne velsignelsens søndag er, at Guds sørger for os og velsigner os. Guds søn har øje både for kroppens brød og det, der alene kan mætte sjælen og varer for evigt: Livets brød, som er Jesus selv, og som han giver os i sit ord og i nadveren. Bibelen siger, at troen kommer af det, der høres. Og vi kan tilføje, at troen påvirker det, der ses – eller det, vi får øje på. Derfor kan vi bede om troens syn med ordene inspireret af Lina Sandell: O Jesus, åbn du vore øjne, at vi må se, hvor velsignede vi er! Alt får en ny dimension gennem taknemmelighedens linse. Livet ændrer sig fuldstændigt, når vi praktiserer taknemmelighed. Det daglige brød kan få en vidunderlig karakter - med en TAK foran. Når Jesus åbner vore øjne, får vi en slags dobbeltsyn på verden, men det er sådan set ikke et dobbeltsyn, men et helhedssyn, fordi med dette troens syn har vi øje for både det skabte og skaberen. Prædiken lægger vægt på, at vores øjne skal åbnes for Guds mange velsignelser i vores liv. At med troens dobbeltsyn har vi et helhedssyn på virkeligheden, hvor vi har øje for både det skabte og skaberen. Men det helt afgørende at få øje på, og styrkes i troen på, er den herlighed og frelse, der venter os, når vor Faders stemme kalder os til en evig fryd derhjemme. Den fryd og frelse får vi del i ved at tro og leve på livets brød, Jesus Kristus. Kommer vi til ham, vil han aldrig vise os bort.

Og en vigtig del af det billede er, at Jesus er helt og fuldt guddommelig og menneskelig, og at han er den, der udfordrer vores samvittighed og den, der trøster os, når vi er anfægtede, og den, der slukker vores evige tørst. Kong Jesus ønsker ikke at abdicere, men for evigt at være konge i dit og mit liv. Men spørgsmålet er, hvem der egentlig sidder på tronen i dit liv?

Opstandelsestroens tre søjler Prædiken v. Jóannis Fonsdal Påskedag 2023 Tekst: Mark 16,1-8 De tre fakta, de tre søjler under vores opstandelsestro er den tomme grav, englenes budskab og møderne med den opstandne. Men der er også en anden faktor, som er med til at bekræfte realiteten i Jesu opstandelse. Det er den stor forandring i disciplenes liv.

Prædiken v. Jóannis Fonsdal Langfredag 2023 Matt 27,31-56 Mattæus beretter, hvad der skete, efter det var sket, men Esajas prædiker over det samme flere hundrede år, før det sker. På underfuld vis har Guds ånd mange århundreder forud malet for profetens øje, hvad det skete på Golgata og givet ham ord, så hele Langfredags evangelium møder os i hans prædiken. Forgæves havde de gamle lærde spekuleret over Esajas' mærkelige syn, der slet ikke syntes at passe sammen med alt, hvad der ellers var forudsagt om Messias. Men så, Langfredag, gik Esajas' ord i opfyldelse, sætning for sætning. Det er som om Esajas selv havde stået og set på.

Engang var Jesus ved at uddrive en dæmon Intro og prædiken v. Jóannis Fonsdal 29. januar 2023 i Emdrup Kirke Tekst: Matt 17,1-9 Peter, Jakob og Johannes så Jesu herlighed på bjerget, kunne du ikke også tænke dig at se Jesu herlighed? Hvad skal vi gøre? Det centrale svar på, hvordan vi kan få et glimt af Jesu herlighed, finder vi i evangelieteksten. “Hør ham!” siger Guds røst fra Himlen. ”Hør ham!” Det kan vi konkret gøre ved at tag vores Bibel og læse om Jesu vej fra krybbe til kors.

Prædiken v. Jóannis Fonsdal over Matt 18,1-14 den 13. nov. 2022 i Emdrup Kirke Der foregår mange magtkampe, også blandt Jesu disciple. De spørger Jesus om, hvem der er den største i Himmeriget. Jesus svarer ved at stille et lille barn imellem dem og fremhæver barnets afhængighed af sine forældre som et forbillede for vores afhængighed af Gud. Vi skal ikke vokse fra at være barn, men vokse i at være Guds barn. Den sande og nødvendige kristne ydmyghed handler derimod om at kende sin stilling overfor Gud og leve derefter. Og så kommer Jesus med noget af en advarsel om ikke at bringe os selv eller andre til fald, dvs. være medvirkende til at vi selv eller andre mister troen på Jesus. Vi må bryde med alt, hvad der er uforeneligt med livet som Jesu discipel. Det er bedre at give afkald og få del i det evige liv, end det er ikke at give afkald og gå fortabt, siger Jesus. Bag disse stærke advarsler om at falde fra eller få andre til at falde fra står Guds uendeligt store og stærke kærlighed til hvert enkelt menneske. Lignelsen om hyrden, der går ud efter det ene bortkomne får, illustrerer, hvad der er Guds vilje: at ingen af hans børn skal gå fortabt, og at de skal have omsorg for hinanden.

Barmhjertighedens hus Prædiken v. Jóannis Fonsdal i Emdrup Kirke 18. sept. 2022 over Joh 5,1-15 Betesda betyder barmhjertighedens hus og er et meget passende navn til et Guds hus. Jesus er barmhjertig og tager initiativet til mødet med den syge og søger også i dag. Gud kan helbrede - også i dag, men han giver ikke løfter om et liv uden sygdom og lidelse. Nogle gange kan Guds kærlighed skjule sig, men han har ikke glemt os. Jesus vil gerne møde os - igen, ligesom han mødte den helbredte igen og pegede på, at evigheden i fællesskab med Jesus er vigtigere end helbredelse her i livet. Uanset hvad der sker, så kan vi hvile i at vi er omsluttet af hans kærlighed og barmhjertighed og at hans ultimative mål er et evigt samvær med os.

Prædiken i Emdrup Kirke over Matthæus 12,31-42 og Jakobsbrevet 3,1-12 om tungens magt og at den er et organ for sindet. Jakobs billeder om, hvordan hesten kan styres med det lille bidsel i munden og at et stort skib kan styres med et lille ror forklares med udgangspunkt i at en kristen har en dobbelt identitet, både et nyt og et gammelt menneske. Det gælder om at have Jesus som kaptajn og det skal gerne også høres på tungen. Når hjertet er fuldt af Jesus, vil det afspejle sig i det, munden løber over med.
