The EDPB has finally adopted its much feared Guidelines on the scope of article 5.3 of the ePrivacy Directive, but consent may still be avoided in some cases not specifically covered by an exemption (e.g., analytics). Absent such an exception, and in light of dismal consent rates, publishers and platforms have embraced highly controversial “Consent or Pay” models. Plan C? Server-side processing (Conversion APIs, Enhanced Conversions, Data Clean Rooms…), not without its own challenges. We have gone through all of it with Peter Craddock in his second appearance on Masters of Privacy. Peter Craddock is a lawyer as well as a software developer, and he uses this dual background to help clients find legal solutions to technical problems and technical solutions to legal problems. He is based in Brussels and helps international companies with their global data strategy and with EU data litigation. He notably has strong expertise in the legal aspects of digital advertising and adtech, and has been one of the most prominent commentators of recent legal developments in that area. **Cold Open (Our Advice to a Redditor // Google Local Service Ads are Changing)****Skip the Cold Open at 16:15**Our agency has been working on two very big things that are fundamentally changing how digital marketing agencies operate. We talked about one of those things in episode 123.This time, we're tackling server-side tracking -- specifically with Google's "Enhanced Conversions".The days of accurate paid media reporting are coming to an end with privacy regulations and tech companies blocking the ability to track user actions after engaging with an ad.This era breathes life into what's known as server-side tracking and attribution. However, no one seems to be talking about it right now.But we are.And that's what we're focusing on. We believe server-side tracking is what's going to set the agencies of tomorrow up for success and leave agencies and freelancers behind who are still relying on lead ads, webhooks, and pixels to report conversions to clients.----------------------------------Our recommended agency tools:everbrospodcast.com/recommended-tools/----------------------------------⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐As always, if you enjoyed this episode or this podcast in general and want to leave us a review or rating, head over to Apple and let us know what you like!

We're currently taking a break for a new addition to the family. We'll be back with new episodes starting on December 6, 2023. This episode originally aired on April 13, 2022. Server-side tracking is being pitched as the next great leap forward in analytics and marketing data collection. It is positioned as the cure for all current ills facing digital analytics and marketing data collection as well as those to come. What is it? Is it overhyped? What can it really do and what real problems does it solve? What are the pitfalls? Are you risking getting stuck in a particular ecosystem? On this week's episode of the 33 Tangents podcast, Jason, Jenn, and Jim discuss what they're seeing with server-side tracking and if they think it will solve the problems it is pitched to solve. THANK YOU We know your time is limited, so it means a lot to us that you would spend some of your time with us. This week we talk about whether to leave eloquent support in Livewire and have some crazy fun brain blasts about PHP attributes and how we can use and abuse them.
