You Might Know Her From

Oh what a beautiful morning because we are here with actor, singer, and three-time Tony-nominee, Mary Testa. You Might Know Her From Whoopi, Sex and the City, The Bounty Hunter, and the New York stage productions of Queen of the Mist,  Xanadu, 42nd Street, Barnum, On the Town, The Rink, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Oklahoma. Mary gave us all the goods on developing Xanadu, and how it found its way to Broadway, accepting the role of Aunt Eller while Sally Struthers was watching the Golden Globes in her living room, and iconically covering for Liza Minnelli in The Rink opposite Chita Rivera. We also got into the collaborative relationship she has with Michael John La Chuisa and the significance of headlining Queen of the Mist. All that plus Mary took all (and we mean all) our hot gossip questions about 42nd Street, taking over for Terri White, and whether or not Jennifer Aniston did coverage! This week Julie and Zane chat with Josh Thia about which of life's truths can be gleaned from Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party! "[it] has a jittery, wandering quality, conscientiously shifting styles and tempos as if in search of a lost chord . . . The ballads . . . are of the high-decibel, swooning pop variety made popular by Frank Wildhorn. Mr. Lippa fares better with pastiches of jazz, vaudeville and gospel vintage, although these, too, suffer by comparison to the Kander-Ebb songs for Chicago." The CurtainUp reviewer wrote: "The Wild Party may not be the perfect musical we've all been looking for but it's great fun to watch and puts enough talent on display to have warranted a longer run than it will have." - Ben Brantley of the New York Times- FURTHER READING -Wiki - Musical, PoemSpotifyiTunes- CELEBRITY SHOUTOUTS - Andrew Lippa, Joseph Moncure March, Kristin Chenoweth, Julia Murney, Brian d'Arcy James, Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Leigh Silverman, Sonya Tayeh, Sutton Foster, Steven Pasquale, Brandon Victor Dixon, Miriam ShorLike us on Facebook! Composer John Kander (Tony Award winner for Best Original Score in 1967 for “Cabaret”, 1981 for “Woman of the Year”, and 1993 for “Kiss of the Spider-Woman”) talks about his decades-long collaboration with Fred Ebb, with particular focus on the four projects that were not fully completed before Ebb's death in 2004: “The Scottsboro Boys”, “The Visit”, “All About Us” (aka “Over and Over”) and “Curtains”, speaking directly to the issues of utilizing the minstrel show construct for “Scottsboro”. He recalls his first meeting Ebb and their earliest, never produced collaboration, “Golden Gate”; beginning work on “Cabaret”, at the behest of Hal Prince, the morning after “Flora the Red Menace” opened; what factors resulted in “Chicago” being only a moderate success in the 70s but a smash in the 90s; why he thinks musicals are best written at a certain "remove" from their subjects; whether he believes there is a "signature" Kander & Ebb writing style; how he, Ebb and their collaborators spent a great deal of time talking, asking "what if," long before any writing began; whether any of the more than 60 songs written for “Cabaret”, most unused, will ever escape his "trunk"; what it was like to write for the particular voices of Liza Minnelli and Chita Rivera; whether he thinks writing teams benefit from working in the same room, as he and Ebb did throughout their career together; and what he's working on now. Kander also demonstrates how the same melody can be used to change tone over the course of a show, using examples from “Cabaret” and “The Visit”.
