Many Latter-day Saints long for a more inclusive church, including less of an emphasis on doctrines in favor of learning to listen better to each other and open our hearts to more diverse points of view. They are bored by and are unmoved by certainty. They want a deeper connection with the Divine (however they picture that). They want to be heard and understood for who they are and not feel they have to perform the role of "perfect" Mormon. This episode looks closely at the concept of "Big Tent" Mormonism. Healthcare isn't a red or blue issue, says Pete Barlow, an Augusta County Democrat running for Congress in the 2026 midterms cycle. Farmers having markets closed to them because of the Trump tariffs – not a red or blue issue. FEMA not being there to respond to natural disasters – not red or blue. But for Democrats in Western Virginia to be able to be a part of the solutions, we need to open up the tent. “We always talk about being a big tent party. I don't try to insist the world works the way I want it to work. Luis reveals how the appropriation of these words into trends feels in his body and why.They discuss intent and impact before conversation flows to decolonizing versus re-indigenizing. A question forms, are we dominating or relating to our body, the land, and others? True healing, whether in the DEI or decolonizing realms, takes time and space to go deeper and root. The speedy passing of trends does not allow for this rooted healing to occur. Discussion includes exploring inclusion as holding space for each person to have their own opinions, knowing we will not all agree. Consensus and rules, or mandates, do not equate to inclusion. At last week's Democratic National Convention, organizers tried to put unity on display by featuring speakers with a range of ideological viewpoints who support Vice President Kamala Harris' bid for president. But one major voice was missing. DNC leaders denied the request of the Uncommitted Movement, the Pro-Palestinian anti-war in Gaza coalition, to have a Palestinian American speak on stage at the convention. One of the people who the group suggested was Georgia State Rep. Ruwa Romman, the state's first Palestinian American elected to public office. She joins us on the show to talk about the message the DNC's decision sends to voters opposed to U.S. support for Israel's war in Gaza.And in headlines: The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah traded fire with Israel on Sunday in the biggest flare-up of violence between the two in recent months, Republican Vice Presidential Nominee J.D.
