RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next of his regular audio described theatre reviews for 2025 This week we have the multi-award winning musical ‘Chicago' as the current UK tour visited the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham with description by Professional Audio Describer Anne Hornsby. About ‘Chicago' ‘CHICAGO', the "sexiest musical ever" (Metro) is currently on it's UK tour starring Strictly Come Dancing Professional Dancer and TV Star Janette Manrara (It Takes Two, Burn The Floor, Glee) as Roxie Hart, West End and TV star Brenda Edwards (Loose Women, Chicago, The X Factor) as Matron ‘Mama' Morton and West End leading man Dan Burton (Gypsy, The Mousetrap, White Christmas) as Billy Flynn. With 6 Tony Awards, 2 Olivier Awards, a Grammy® and thousands of standing ovations, ‘CHICAGO' truly is “SUPERB” (Daily Telegraph). Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids. Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, ‘it's sexy, sassy score with one show-stopping song after another includes “Razzle Dazzle”, “Cell Block Tango”, and “All That Jazz”. With 6 Tony Awards, 2 Olivier Awards, a Grammy® and thousands of standing ovations, ‘CHICAGO' truly is “SUPERB” (Daily Telegraph). Legendary composer John Kander (Chicago, Cabaret, Steel Pier, Zorba) shares rarified insider stories with Michael Riedel about the making of Chicago. Kander reminisces about creating epic musical hits with songwriting partner Fred Ebb and collaborating with Director/Choregrapher Bob Fosse. Kander also reveals the secret advice he received from dear friend Liza Minnelli. Chicago opened on Broadway in 1975, and in the shadow of the Tony-winning musical smash A Chorus Line, Chicago was overlooked for years. When Chicago returned to New York's City Center and transferred to Broadway in 1996, no one would have dreamed that the show would still be running in 2025, making it the longest running musical revival in Broadway history! This episode features never-before-heard excerpts from the interviews Michael Riedel recorded while writing his 2020 best-selling book Singular Sensation: The Triumph of Broadway. I chat with Karen Mason about her career and latest recording, Karen Mason and All That Jazz!, which celebrates the songs of John Kander and Fred Ebb. I also play a few selections from the recording. Ms. Mason has starred on Broadway, Off-Broadway, television, in concert, and in the recording studio. She's been praised for her “fierce emotion” by The New York Times, her “innate comic ability” by Playbill and her “delightful instrument” by the Daily News. She is a 14-time Manhattan Association of Cabarets (MAC) Award winner; most recently she was the recipient of the 2019 MAC Lifetime Achievement Award.
Composer Jerry Herman (Composer and lyricist; born July 10, 1931, in New York City) It only takes a moment to realize that Broadway's Golden Age is alive and well and thriving as long as Jerry Herman's around. "When they passed out talent," the legendary Carol Channing has said, "Jerry stood in line twice." Almost single-handedly, the creator of Milk and Honey, Hello, Dolly!, Mame, La Cage aux Folles and so much more has revitalized and nourished the all-American tradition of great and unstoppable show tunes. His music and lyrics have kept audiences tapping their feet, humming along, and wiping their eyes with tears of joy for generations. Even as often he's been underrated as being too easy to like in a world of dark and foreboding musicals, too entertaining, too tuneful and much too upbeat, the genius of Herman's deceptively simple songs cuts through any shortsighted criticism. "Jerry has succeeded so well in his mission that people don't give him credit," said Michael Feinstein, "because to be simple without being cliche is nearly impossible." Herman's genius, in truth, is not so much simple as it is subtle. For all his cock-eyed optimism-and very much in the tradition of his forefathers Rodgers and Hammerstein-a Herman musical always carries a message of timeless values, of humanity's triumph over hatred and ignorance, of happiness over despair. 1983's La Cage aux Folles, a smash hit on Broadway and a Tony Award winner in all three of its Broadway productions-and counting-is not only a bona fide crowd-pleaser but also the most sweetly radical musical of its age. Here on the Broadway stage, decades before the fight for marriage equality hit the headlines, was a pair of gay dads raising a family, and here was "...a man singing a love song to another man-I don't think that's ever been done in a Broadway musical before." Herman told The Washington Post that during previews in Boston "I didn't know whether or not they'd throw stones. The audience gave it an ovation." "By the time Georges and Albin-having weathered a son's passing ingratitude and a zealot's intolerance-walked hand in hand into the St. Tropez sunset, the audience was on its feet," The Washington Post reported. "What La Cage aux Folles celebrates, after all, is loyalty and love, respect for others and respect for self and, yes, even family. The good old values." Gerald Herman was born in New York in 1931 and raised in Jersey City. His parents Harry and Ruth ran a children's summer camp in the Catskills, where young Jerry surprised everyone by teaching himself the piano. Once, he recalled years later, "my parents took me at a tender age to see Annie Get Your Gun, and I was absolutely dazzled. I have one of those retentive ears, and when I came home I sat down at the piano and played about five of the songs. My mother was amazed." Many more would be amazed. At 17, he was introduced to Frank Loesser, who encouraged him to continue composing once he heard some of Herman's songs. He went to the University of Miami, joining its adventurous theater program and himself appearing in undergraduate shows including the musical Finian's Rainbow. His alma mater since then has honored this distinguished alumnus and today boasts the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre at the heart of its drama program. After graduation from Miami, Herman headed back to New York and put together a review of his songs so far: I Feel Wonderful opened at the Theatre de Lys in Greenwich Village October 18, 1954 and ran for 48 performances. He was just getting going. While playing piano in a New York jazz club called the Showplace, Herman brought together his friends Phyllis Newman and Charles Nelson Reilly for another review called Nightcap, which opened in 1958. This one ran for two years. In 1960 came Herman's Broadway debut, alongside material by Fred Ebb and Woody Allen, in the review From A to Z. That same year came Parade, also at the Showplace, starring Reilly and Dody Goodman. A hit, Parade moved to the Players' Theatre and it was during this run that a producer asked Herman if he would be interested in writing a musical about the founding of the state of Israel. Milk and Honey, starring Molly Picon as the ultimate Hadassah lady, opened in 1961. It earned Herman his first Tony nomination for Best Musical of 1962. He had arrived. It was David Merrick who brought together Herman and the first of his vulnerable but ultimately invincible heroines, Dolly Levi. Hello, Dolly! starring Carol Channing opened in 1964, ran for 2,844 performances, became Broadway's longest-running musical and has been revived often since. It swept the Tony Awards, taking home a then unmatched 10 including Best Musical and becoming one of the happiest episodes in the history of the Broadway musical. Mame followed in 1966, starring Angela Lansbury and teaching the world that in the toughest times "We Need a Little Christmas." What has followed amounts to a life-affirming body of work rivaled by few: Dear World, the underappreciated Mack Mabel, The Grand Tour, Mrs. Santa Claus, Jerry's Girls, and of course La Cage aux Folles. The theater world knew a good thing when it heard and saw it: Tonys, Drama Desk Awards, Theatre World Awards all followed, as did a 2009 Special Tony Award for Lifetime achievement, and a 2010 Drama Desk Special Award for "enchanting and dazzling audiences with his exuberant music and heartfelt lyrics for more than half a century." Right now in the 21st Century, we can be sure that someone, somewhere is singing a Jerry Herman song. That's one happy way we know the man's been right all along: the best of times is now.

Haldane Drama to perform saucy musical New York has done well by Chicago. The musical, which has been performed more than 10,000 times over the past 28 years on Broadway, will have its Haldane Drama debut from March 22 to 24 on the gritty stage of the school auditorium. It has long been on director Martha Mechalakos' punch list. Based on a satirical mid-1920s play written by a Chicago Tribune reporter, it focuses on the trials and tribulations of a gaggle of newly emboldened women accused of murdering their husbands. They work the legal system to draw attention to themselves - stories you might hear today on a true-crime podcast. The source material proved fruitful to John Kander, who wrote the music, and Fred Ebb, who wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the book with choreographer Bob Fosse. Presented in a vaudevillian courtroom setting, with many direct addresses to the audience, the show serves up two killers and assorted raucous denizens who plead their case through dance and songs such as "All That Jazz" and "Razzle Dazzle." The Haldane production has benefited, Mechalakos says, from the guidance of Christine Bokhour, a veteran Broadway actor who choreographed. "The story, music and lyrics are all so dang good," says Bokhour, who performed in the musical on Broadway and national tours. "It has revenge and redemption and is chock full of catchy tunes and phrases, then the vaudeville timing - Fosse was born to a Chicago vaudevillian and was a child prodigy tapper - and pace keep you riveted. The dancing sends it to another level. "The precision Fosse demanded is the most challenging aspect for untrained dancers," she says. "Aside from the athleticism in much of his work, there is a seeming simplicity when you watch Fosse dancers. But the amount of control it takes to execute those moves and isolations is underestimated - maybe not so much now by the Haldane kids in this production; I haven't been easy on them. "Fosse can be hard even for trained dancers. It's a style all its own created from his particular set of physical idiosyncrasies. I haven't replicated the Broadway show here - I can't even do that choreography now - but there are some places I've used original or close to original choreography where possible." Christine's husband, Ray, who spent the better part of 22 years playing Amos Hart in Chicago, mostly on Broadway, has also provided guidance to the actors. (The couple met in 1999 on a national tour.) Mechalakos says the Bokhours "bring the insider knowledge of all the bits that aren't written in the script, which is so much fun for the Haldane actors. And Christine donated several pairs of her Broadway performance shoes. Everyone wanted to wear the shoes that touched a Broadway stage." "I love watching light bulbs go on for kids when they grasp a move or a joke or a moment," Bokhour says. Amelia Alayon as Roxie Hart Elaine Llewellyn as Velma Kelly Merrick Williams as Billy Flynn Oliver Petkus as Amos Hart Lucia Petty as Mama Morton Molly Bernstein as Little Mary Sunshine With all the razzle-dazzle, Mechalakos feels that many productions of Chicago don't focus on what the show is actually about, which is "our national obsession with celebrity and scandal and the media obsession with such. It's about inequity and corruption in our criminal justice system, and the cynical idea that crime pays and it's a circus act, all show business." The students will perform the "teen edition" of the musical, which does not include the songs "Little Bit of Good" and "Class" and has other trims and substitutions. Chicago opened on Broadway in 1975 and ran for two years with Chita Rivera (who died Jan. 30) as Velma Kelly and Gwen Verdon as Roxie Hart. Jerry Orbach represented law and disorder as attorney Billy Flynn. The show was revived in 1996. Haldane Drama will perform Chicago at 7 p.m. on March 22 and 23 and at 2 p.m. on March 24 in the school auditorium at 15 Craigside Drive in Cold Spring. Tickets are $15, or $8 for seniors an...

Musical month continues with Indy's favourite, the 1972 film Cabaret! It's a long one, but a good one as we discuss; the performance of Liza Minnelli, thoughts of political apathy, the amazing songs, the insidious spread of fascism, disturbing visuals, and how it is the perfect version of a 1970s musical. Cabaret is a 1972 American musical period drama film directed by Bob Fosse from a screenplay by Jay Presson Allen, based on the stage musical of the same name by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff, which in turn was based on the 1951 play I Am a Camera by John Van Druten and the 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. It stars Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem, Marisa Berenson, Fritz Wepper, and Joel Grey. Multiple numbers from the stage score were used for the film, which also featured three other songs by Kander and Ebb, including two written for the adaptation. Composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb's creative partnership lasted forty years and produced hit shows like Cabaret, Chicago and Kiss of the Spider Woman. Since Ebb's death in 2004, John Kander — now 96 years old — has continued making new work. With Chicago back on stage in Australia, John Kander joins us from New York. Also, we travel to Moscow to encounter the devil and his gang of misfits wreaking havoc among the literati of Stalinist Russia. Mikhail Bulgakov wrote the novel The Master and Margarita in the 1930s when he was fed up with seeing his books and plays banned by Russian authorities. Now, Belvoir St Theatre are adapting this unwieldy novel for the stage.

Welcome to Musical May, wherein we discuss movies adapted from the stage — the kind where everybody sings and dances (much to Krueger's confusion, we'll learn). This week, we start the month off with a true banger — and unsurprisingly, Aaron's pick: 2002's Chicago, with music by John Kander and Fred Ebb!
Coming live from the Big Apple, hosts Joshua and Dan.... you know how some days are hard and you don't always think you can come up with terrific pithy descriptions? today is one of those days. we discuss the new Broadway musical New York, New York. John Kander wrote it. the man is a level above National Treasure and attention must be paid, if one has to quote Arthur Miller. Fred Ebb, as ever, is present. Lin Manuel Miranda contributed too. production by Susan Stroman. i think the episode is funny. it's also elegiac and celebratory and somber and excited. it's a series of contradictions, which in a way is exactly what musical theatre is. it's worth giving a listen, i think it might be one of our better eps. Tune in to next week's episode when we discuss Hello, Dolly!; specifically, the Broadway revival performance from June 28th, 2017! Welcome to Berlín…… 00h 00’00” Tiller girls 00h 01’40” Presentación 00h 02’24” Cabecera 00h 03’35” Introducción 00h 04’08” Wilkommen – Jonathan Pryce 00h 09’59” So what? – Judi Dench 00h 13’34” Don’t tell mama – Maria Friedman 00h 18’36” Telephone dance – Gregg Edelman 00h 23’27” La más fabulosa mujer – Natalia Millán & Manuel Bandera 00h 26’53” Two ladies – Joel Grey, Mary Ehara & Rita O’Connor 00h 29’40” It couldn’t please me more – Jack Gilford & Lotte Lenya 00h 33’13” Tomorrow belongs to me – John Mark Ainsley 00h 35’32” Why should I wake up? – Gregg Edelman 00h 39’08” Don’t go, Sally – Gregg Edelman & Maria Friedman 00h 43’24” Sitting pretty – Money – Jonathan Pryce 00h 50’24” Married – Fred Ebb & Judi Dench 00h 53’25” Meeskite – Fred Ebb & Maria Friedman 00h 58’49” Tomorrow belongs to me (Reprise) – Caroline O’Connor 01h 01’00” Entr’acte 01h 06’02” Kick line 01h 09’25” Married (Reprise) – Ron Rifkin & Marie Louise Wilson 01h 10’54” If you could see her with my eyes – Alan Cumming 01h 14’49” What would you do? – Lotte Lenya 01h 18’44” ¿Y a mi qué? – Asier Etxeandía 01h 22’06” Cabaret – Jill Haworth 01h 27’55” Finale ultimo – Atsier Etxeandía & Manuel Bandera 01h 31’53” Anécdotas y curiosidades 01h 34’31” Good time Charlie – Fred Ebb 01h 37’48” It’all blow over – Fred Ebb 01h 41’50” Roommates – Fred Ebb & John Kander 01h 51’50” Money – Liza Minnelli & Joel Grey 01h 55’26” Mein herr – Liza Minnelli 01h 59’58” Maybe this time – Liza Minnelli 02h 04’15” Fruit shop dance
CABARET COMPOSER: John Kander LYRICIST: Fred Ebb BOOK: Joe Masteroff SOURCE: Christopher Isherwood's The Berlin Stories (1945) DIRECTOR: Hal Prince CHOREOGRAPHER: Ron Field PRINCIPLE CAST: Bert Convy (Cliff), Joel Grey (Emcee), Jill Hayworth (Sally). Lotte Lenya (Schneider) OPENING DATE: Nov 20, 1966 CLOSING DATE: Sep 06, 1969 PERFORMANCES: 1,165 SYNOPSIS: American Clifford Bradshaw takes up residence in pre-war Berlin. While there he becomes enamored with cabaret singer Sally Bowles, and her divine decadence. As the Nazi's rise to power, Cliff wonders if he must flee Germany or take a stand against the Third Reich. Harold Prince's staging of Cabaret took audiences by surprise as it tossed aside all manner of theatrical conventions, reflecting the audience back at itself through a large mirror and challenging them with diegetic and nondiegetic song and dance routines. Taboo subject matter including queerness, sex, antisemitism, abortion, and the Holocaust came to the forefront of a Broadway musical for the first time. Bruce Kimmel explores the impact of the various elements that made Cabaret a seismic event. From the authentic performances of Lotte Lenya and Jill Haworth to the Weimar infused score of John Kander and Fred Ebb, as well as the star-making turn of Joel Grey, each element of this groundbreaking musical is explored to underline its collective power. Bruce Kimmel is a legendary Grammy-nominated producer of theatre music on CD, having produced over 180 albums, including Broadway and off-Broadway cast albums, singers, and concept recordings. He is also an award-winning songwriter and the author of twenty-one books. He wrote, directed, and starred in the cult movie hit, The First Nudie Musical, and co-created the story for the hit film, The Faculty, directed by Robert Rodriguez. As an actor, Mr. Kimmel guest-starred on most of the long-running television shows of the 1970s. It's 50 years since the appearance on screen of John Kander and Fred Ebb's musical Cabaret, and an iconic point in the film career of Liza Minnelli. Matthew looks at that and at other portraits of Berlin's "Weimar Years". The programme includes music from Cabaret, The Blue Angel, Berlin Babylon, Metropolis, Nosferatu, Berlin Alexanderplatz, The Threepenny Opera, and the extraordinary cinematic and musical portrait of the city across a day - 'Berlin - A Symphony of a Great City'.
This week on The Sound Kitchen you'll hear the answer to the question about Mikhail Baryshnikov from the True Russia Collective. There's information about Planète Radio's ePOP video competition which you should all enter, great music, and of course, the new quiz question, too. Just click on the “Audio” arrow above and enjoy! Hello everyone! Welcome to The Sound Kitchen weekly podcast, published every Saturday – here on our website, or wherever you get your podcasts. You'll hear the winner's names announced and the week's quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you've grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and listen every week. RFI Planète Radio is sponsoring a video contest, and we want you to enter. The deadline is tomorrow, 1 May – so get your video in today! Planète Radio is an RFI department that reaches out to remote populations around the world. For the fourth consecutive year, Planète Radio is holding a video competition on environmental issues. The theme of this year's competition is “Show how they feel”: You are to create a 3-minute video about climate change, the environment, pollution - told by the people it affects. Here's what Planète Radio says about the competition: “Environmental deterioration, climate change, pollution, everybody's talking about it. But amid articles, figures, and expert reports, what do we really know about the feelings of the people already impacted? The video clips produced by the ePOP community in more than 50 countries allow us to hear from those who never ask for anything yet have seen it all - those who are already living with these changes that deteriorate their quality of life.” Your project can be intergenerational: Get together with your grandfather, your aunt, someone older in your community and ask them how they feel about what is happening to their surroundings or to the place where they grew up. RFI's ePOP video awards shine a light on Africa's environmental crises Your project can also be about how you, or people your age, feel about climate change, given that your future will be affected by this phenomenon. Gather the words of those around you who are confronting the environmental crisis in their daily lives, investing, researching, and questioning the urgency of deploying solutions to face it. Prizes for this year's competition include equipment grants from 1,000 to 4,500 euros, as well as ePOP promotion kits and other goodies. For competition guidelines and more information about the four different categories you can enter, click here. You can also write to us at english.service@rfi.fr if you need more help. We're very proud that the winner in the ePOP 2020 RFI Club category went to an English language club – Adita Prithika's RFI Agnichiragu Phoenix Club in Tamil Nadu, India. Here's Adita's award-winning video. Please note that you do not have to be a member of an RFI English Club to enter. Everyone is welcome! The deadline for entries is 1 May. Independent RFI English Clubs: Be sure to always include Audrey Iattoni (audrey.iattoni@rfi.fr) from our Listener Relations department in all your RFI Club correspondence. Remember to copy me (thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr) when you write to her so that I know what is going on, too. N.B.: You do not need to send her your quiz answers! Email overload! And don't forget, there is a Facebook page just for you, the independent RFI English Clubs. Only members of RFI English Clubs can belong to this group page, so when you apply to join, be sure you include the name of your RFI Club and your membership number. Everyone can look at it, but only members of the group can post on it. If you haven't yet asked to join the group, and you are a member of an independent, officially recognized RFI English club, go to the Facebook link above, and fill out the questionnaire !!!!! (if you do not answer the questions, I click “decline”). There's a Facebook page for members of the general RFI Listeners Club, too. Just click on the link above and fill out the questionnaire, and you can connect with your fellow Club members around the world. Be sure you include your RFI Listeners Club membership number (most of them begin with an A, followed by a number) in the questionnaire, or I will have to click “Decline”, which I don't like to do! This week's quiz: On 19 March, I asked you a question about Ukraine – specifically, about the Russians against the war. Earlier that week you listened to and read Jan van der Made's excellent article “Who are the Russians campaigning to stop Putin and help Ukraine?” Jan's interview was with Sergei Guriev, the founder of the True Russia Collective. I asked you about Mikhail Baryshnikov, a member of the collective. You were to do a bit of research on him, and tell me who he is, a bit of his story, his history. The answer is: Mikhail Baryshnikov was the preeminent ballet dancer in the '70s & '80s. Born in 1948 in Soviet-controlled Latvia, he was a member of the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, and made international headlines in 1974 while on tour with the Kirov in Canada, when he escaped his minders. All traveling Soviet artists were limited in their movements for exactly that reason: fear they would defect to the west. He was granted political asylum by the Canadian government. Baryshnikov then moved to the US and joined the American Ballet Theatre, then the New York City Ballet so that he could learn modern classical dance, which was not known in the Soviet Union. Baryshnikov then returned to the American Ballet Theatre, where he was Principal Dancer and later, Artistic Director. He has done some films, too. You know, sometimes it's good to be old – I got to see him dance. It was perfection. The winners are: Jobayada Aktar Jai, who's a member of the Nilshagor RFI Fan Club in Nilphamari, Bangladesh. There are two RFI Listeners Club members who won this week: Radhakrishna Pillai from Kerala State in India, and Kanwar Sandhu from British Columbia in Canada. Rounding out the list are two RFI English listeners from Bangladesh: Tasmaul Housna Akhi from Naogaon, and Lutfor Rahaman from Bogura, who noted he is ill and asks for your healing thoughts. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “New York New York” by John Kander and Fred Ebb, performed by the Instrumental Big Band Orchestra; an excerpt from Sergei Rachmaninov's “Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini”; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “I'm Gonna' Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” by Fats Waller, played by Stephanie Trick, and “Cantaloupe Island” by Herbie Hancock, performed by Hancock on the piano, Freddie Hubbard on the cornet, bassist Ron Carter, and Tony Williams on the drums. Comenzaremos con el clásico “There’s no business like show business” de Irving Berlin para seguir con grandes compositores, bien conocidos por los seguidores de nuestros podcasts como Jule Styne, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, Marvin Hamlisch, Claude Michel Schonberg, George Gershwin, o Richard Rodgers, para terminar con el popular “New York, New York” de John Kander & Fred Ebb. 00h 00’00” Presentación 00h 01’29” Cabecera 00h 02’07” BERLIN - There’s no business like show business 00h 05’26” LLOYD WEBBER - Don’t cry for me, Argentina 00h 08’06” LLOYD WEBBER - Memory 00h 11’24” LLOYD WEBBER - Jellicle songs for Jellicle cats 00h 13’41” LLOYD WEBBER - Love changes everything 00h 18’10” LLOYD WEBBER - The music of the night 00h 21’43” PORTER - I get a kick out of you 00h 26’07” PORTER - Night and day 00h 29’30” BOCK - Fiddler on the roof suite 00h 36’48” LOESSER - Luck, be a lady tonight 00h 39’57” GERSHWIN - Girl crazy selections 00h 45’40” STYNE - Everything’s coming up roses 00h 50’24” STYNE - Together wherever we go 00h 52’12” STYNE - Just in time 00h 53’41” STYNE - Make someone happy 00h 55’29” STYNE - The party’s over 00h 57’37” STYNE - Let me entertain you 00h 59’27” STYNE - People 01h 02’02” BERNSTEIN - Candide Overture 01h 06’13” BERNSTEIN - West Side Story selection 01h 15’15” BERNSTEIN - Wonderful town selection 01h 21’29” LOEWE - Gigi selections 01h 30’20” HAMLISCH - A chorus line suite 01h 39’28” RODGERS - The lady is a tramp 01h 42’50” RODGERS - Waltzes 01h 48’44” RODGERS - I have dreamed 01h 52’22” SCHÖNBERG - I dreamed a dream 01h 56’38” SCHÖNBERG - Miss Saigon suite 02h 03’18” SONDHEIM - A little night music selections 02h 12’07” SONDHEIM - No one is alone 02h 16’08” WILSON - Seventy-six trombones 02h 19’11” SHERMAN BROTHERS – Tom Sawyer overture 02h 22’25” BRICUSSE – Goodbye, Mr. Chips overture 02h 26’20” KANDER – New York, New York

My guest this month has been called a poet of the vocal cords and "the Queen of Cabarets." Karen Mason originated the role of Tanya in the Broadway production of Mamma Mia and has had starring roles in Wonderland, Hairspray, Sunset Boulevard, and the first U.S. tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies. She's shared concert stages with Michael Feinstein, Jerry Herman, Chita Rivera, Luciano Pavarotti, Rosemary Clooney, Liza Minnelli, and John Kander & Fred Ebb, among others. Karen's performed with major symphony orchestras and headlined Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and London's Royal Albert Hall. A 14-time Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs Award-winner, she received the MAC Award for Major Female Vocalist of the Year for six consecutive years and was honored with the MAC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.Her television appearances include the hit dramas “Ed,” “Law & Order: SVU,” and, most recently, an appearance in the Netflix series Halston starring Ewan McGregor. In our conversation, Karen talks about what the differences are between cabaret and Broadway and pushes back against those who claim that Broadway is the superior of the two. She also shares how she prepares for both types of performances and finds the story in a song. We discuss how to handle hecklers and how she works on patter - the talking that goes before and after songs. We talk about our crush on Ewan McGregor and what it was like to work with him on the series Halston, her new album of songs, Let The Music Play, and much more.Karen is an accomplished vocalist and actor and a delightful person. She's smart, thoughtful, kind, and laughs easily — the kind of person you'd love to have for a friend. I'm grateful for the time she shared with me and now, you.For full show notes, transcriptions of this episode, and more offerings for singers, you can visit my website HERE.Please join me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. You can find Karen on her website, Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube. The songs from today's episode are Don't Rain On My Parade, Steppin' Out, and Let The Music Play, and are from Karen's CD, Let The Music Play (used with permission.) Book Vs. Movie “Musicals in March” The 1926 Play Chicago Vs the 2000 Filmed AdaptationOur second pick this month for “Musicals in March” is Chicago which has a rich history in two important cities--Chicago and New York City. The original play was based on the true-crime work of Maurine Dallas Watkins--a journalist and playwright who had a flair for juicy dialogue. Born in Louisville, Kentucky sometime around 1896 (the state has no record of her birth) Watkins was ambitious enough to try her hand at playwriting when most women were not taken seriously as writers. On the advice of one of her instructors, Watkins moved to Chicago to work as a newspaper reporter. Her time at the Chicago Tribune only lasted eight months, but her coverage of accused murderers Belva Gaertner and Beulah Sheriff Annan caused a sensation with the “jazz babies” entering the imaginations of millions of readers. (She later felt guilty about making them sound more charming than they deserved.) After joining the Yale School of Drama, she wrote the play “The Brave Little Woman” with characters “Roxie Hart” and “Velma” which later became Chicago. After a respectable run on Broadway (the touring company included a then-unknown Clark Gable), she went on to write 20 more plays and became a Hollywood screenwriter. By saving and investing her money, she made a fortune and retired to Florida when not traveling the world. She was never married or had children and died quietly in 1969. After her death, stars Gwen Verdon and Bob Fosse bought the rights to Chicago and partnered with John Kander and Fred Ebb to work on the music & score after their combined success with Cabaret. The 1975 production was a slow burn due to the illness of Verdon until Liza Minelli subbed for her. The musical would lose most major TONY Awards to A Chorus Line but it went on to become a $2 billion franchise and the second longest-running show on Broadway since the revival in 1996. The basic story of Roxie Hart, Velma Kelly, Billy Flynn, and “Mama Morton” is one of the old adages “if it bleeds, it leads” with the media portraying the boozy dames as 1920s nouveau heroes. The songs are some of the catchiest you will ever hear in one show including “All That Jazz,” When You're Good to Mama,” Roxie,” “I Can't Do it Alone,” and “Nowadays.” Rob Marshall directed the 2002 film that stars Renee Zellweger (Roxie,) Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma,) Richard Gere (Billy Flynn,) Queen Latifah (“Mama” Morton,) John C. Reilly (Amos Hart,) Christine Baranski (Mary Sunshine,) and Taye Diggs as the Bandleader. So, between the original play and the musical adaptation--which did we prefer? This week on the podcast I'm talking with Broadway Musical Director and Conductor, David Loud. David tells me about his 34 years on Broadway, the magic of theatre and music "in the room" with someone. He talks to me about working with some of the best, including Stephen Sondheim. And how rewarding the teaching he's doing now is.David tells me about the energy of being in the middle of everything while conducting on Broadway, and how the best collaborating happens when everyone makes the same show. We talk a lot about being grateful during the hardest things in life and David tells me about being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and the peace he has found since. David is releasing his memoir Facing the Music in February 2022 be sure to check that out. The 38th Annual Tony Awards was hosted by Julie Andrews and Robert Preston on June 3, 1984. Presented at the Gershwin Theatre, current home of the long-running Wicked, the show featured three medleys dedicated to composers: John Kander and Fred Ebb, Jerry Herman and Stephen Sondheim. Heading into the ceremony, two musicals were virtually tied for the most nominations: Sunday in the Park with George with 10 nominations and La Cage aux Folles with nine. Baby and The Tap Dance Kid followed behind with seven nominations each. This season there were no musicals nominated for Best Revival. The 1983-84 Broadway season spanned a time with many notable events. Marking the final year of President Ronald Reagan's first term, 1984 found itself a leap year, an election year, and a Summer Olympics year, which the US hosted in Los Angeles, CA; in an internationally petty move, our long-time Cold War rivals, The Soviet Union, boycotted those games. This season also saw the creation of the federal holiday to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with Reagan having signed its originating bill the previous November. This year also would see the founding of Canada's famed entertainment company, Cirque du Soleil. In New York, one of the largest events to take place, and it is mentioned in the telecast, is that A Chorus Line makes history as the longest running musical on Broadway; after eight years, and 3,389 performances, A Chorus Line broke the record on September 29th, 1983. It would continue to hold that record until 1997, when it was overtaken by Cats. Today it holds the Number 7 spot on the list of longest running Broadway musicals, surpassed only by Phantom, the Chicago revival, The Lion King, the original production of Cats, Wicked, and the original production of Les Miserables.
