Join us today for an open and honest discussion about suicide prevention. Special guest Glen Bloomstrom introduces us to Living Works ASIST–a suicide prevention training he was first introduced to during his service as US Army Chaplain for 30 years. It's time to tackle the stigma surrounding suicide. What is the church's role in providing care to those suffering from suicidal thoughts? Glen's advice is simple: Stop talking, and learn what to listen for. Don't miss his wisdom and insight as we grow in our ability to provide effective care in the church. QUOTES The church wants to help, but they don't know how. Sadly, it takes an attempt or a death before it gets people's attention. The church and the faith community has so much to offer in a society that's increasingly isolated, lonely, and disconnected. Natural helpers need to be trained. Suicide is part of the human condition. When we're isolated, when we keep it a secret, it gathers power. But if we can talk about it, it removes the power and connects us. Helena Bonham Carter is one of our best known actors – she's played everyone from Princess Margaret in The Crown and Elizabeth the Queen Mother in The King's Speech, to Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter films, and more recently Enola Holmes' formidable mother in the Netflix films with Milly Bobby Brown. Helena is now taking on a very different role, that of the Queen of the Midlands Noele Gordon, or Nolly as she was known to her friends; the actress who starred in the hugely popular TV soap Crossroads for 18 years until she was sacked very suddenly in 1981. Russell T Davies has written the three part drama which is released on ITV X on Thursday 2 February. Helena joins Nuala in the studio. Researchers in Canada estimate that approximately one in eight women are likely to be suffering from an unrecognised brain injury related to domestic violence. Millions of dollars are spent each year in Canada studying the impacts of traumatic brain injuries on professional male athlete's brains, such as hockey players, whilst very little is known about the injuries suffered by female victims of intimate partner violence. Nuala speaks to Karen Mason, co-founder of the Supporting Survivors of Abuse and Brain Injury Through Research project, and a former executive director of the Kelona Women's Shelter in Canada, and Dr Paul van Donkelaar, a clinical neuroscientist at the University of British Columbia who specialises in concussion research. There's just one more week to get your submissions in for the Woman's Hour Power List, this year focussing on women in sport. It's not just football where the women's game has seen big success - Great Britain's women's curling team won a gold medal in Beijing, the 2022 Tour de France Femmes broke records, England and Wales have been confirmed as hosts of Women's T20 World Cup in 2026 and the list goes on. Nuala is joined by two of our Power List judges Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, one of Britain's most celebrated British Paralympians of all time, winning 16 medals across five Games, now a cross bench peer in the House of Lords, and Ebony Rainford-Brent, the World Cup winning cricketer and broadcaster. 1500 people who received treatment from jailed breast surgeon Ian Paterson are being recalled by Spire Healthcare, a private hospital company, after their details were recovered from an old computer database. Described as 'one of the biggest medical scandals ever to have hit this country' the man at the centre of it became known as 'the butchering breast surgeon'. Joining Nuala is Jane Kirby, PA Media Health Editor.

They escape the confines of their homes and struggle to form a relationship based on trust and understanding.   David Arthur examines the socio-political climate which allowed the intimate, off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks to become the longest-running show in American history. Abandoning a desire to adapt Les Romanesques as a cowboy-infused musical hoedown, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt delivered producer Lore Noto a lyrical folktale that took Greenwich Village by storm and was lauded by notable celebrities, if greeted stoically by major critics. The small cast musical with experimental subject matter paved the way for more commercially successful musicals to incubate in off-Broadway theatres, such as Little Shop of Horrors, Nunsense, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. As a long-standing member of the Lehman Engel BMI workshop, he is the recipient of the Jerry Harrington Award. In addition to writing the book and lyrics for the NYMF award winning, ABOUT FACE with music by Jeffrey Lodin, David along with Brian Lasser, contributed material to the MAC award winning revue, HERE'S TO OUR FRIENDS. For the concert stage he has written for Randy Graff, Judy Kuhn, Karen Mason, Marin Mazzie, Donna Murphy, and Barbara Walsh. Along with the music, lyrics and book for SARATOGA TRUNK SONGS, current projects include the book and lyrics for NOBODY SLEEPS WELL IN CASABLANCA with music by Douglas J. Earlier this week I read this short and gut-wrenching Facebook post from a friend: Today she would have turned 20. All that we wonder and all the ache that we feel melding into one vast teardrop. It’s saltiness stinging the souls and staining the pages of the lives of those she left behind. My friends teenage daughter took her own life a few years ago. I’ve been reminded as well that life in our tumultuous and uncertain times is contributing to a rise in the suicide rate. I want to invite you to listen in on a timely conversation with Dr. Karen Mason, author of the book Preventing Suicide: A Handbook For Pastors, Chaplain, and Pastoral Counselors, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.

A lot of time is spent on this podcast defending the multitude of roles that pornography plays in people’s lives. We say, it’s not a moral scourge, it’s not an enemy of feminism, it’s not corrupting young minds any more than any other media form. The academic study of pornography was established in a defensive mode, against second-wave anti-porn feminists, against the lies perpetuated by the church, against the forces fighting sex-worker rights. And because of this defensive posture, it’s jarring whenever we see the mainstream media portray pornography in a sensible, non-hysterical, perspective. This is what makes the Netflix documentary Circus of Books such a revelation! Circus of Books tells the story of a gay pornography video and book store in West Hollywood that endured as a staple in this gayborhood through the AIDS crisis and the mainstreaming of gay culture that has willfully abandoned its porn past in favor of getting married and joining the military. In this documentary, pornography, and the community build around this store, is presented as a positive, unifying force where the gay community can indulge their sexual desires without shame But while the store served as a beacon of hope during dark times, the owners weren’t as invested in the erotic potentiality of pornography as their customers. And that’s because the owners of this store are a heterosexual, highly religious, married couple! And while they have no problem with the gay community, their worldview is shaken when their own son struggles to come out as gay to his religious mother. This creates a unique dynamic and tension that brings this documentary to the next level. In this episode, I’m joined by one of the film’s producers, Adam Baran. Adam is an interesting character because most of his work deals with pornography and gay sexuality in a very straightforward and blunt fashion. Within an environment where being a buttoned-up sexless chairman of a Fortune 500 company is considered to be a quote-unquote “victory” for the gay rights movement, Baran insistently positions gay sexuality and pornography as an essential part of what it means to be gay in the contemporary age. Baran has produced music videos, short films, web series, and documentaries emphatically positioning pornography and sexuality at the center of the gay experience. In this episode, we talk about how pornography helped him feel comfortable in his own skin and how writing about his own sex-life online led to bigger opportunities. A very interesting story of how she got there with a background in journalism, radio and television, and later public relations work. The difference between journalism and public relations: with the former you don't have a lot of choice about what will be covered, and some of the stories are not pleasant or interesting to you as a journalist. With the latter you get to tell stories about things you believe in.During her time as a volunteer for the Shelter, Karen decided she wanted to be the director of a non-profit organization that she believed in. As it turned out, the Shelter was just about to post an opening for exactly that.Although Karen was never certified as a social worker and had never worked as an executive director for any organization, she believed she was qualified and made her pitch. The board of directors agreed and hired her.As part of her duties she manages over 30 staff and volunteers and many processes. A lot of boring but extremely important work to keep in compliance with the BC Societies Act.Directly impacting the lives of women and children who live in our community and need help starting a new life free of abuse. They call it "the cycle of abuse" for a reason. Quite often after an abusive episode, couples will go through a honeymoon period until it quite often happens again. Statistics show it takes a woman leaving an average of 7 times before she leaves an abusive relationship for good. The Shelter looks at rental listings every day and works closely with several subsidized housing facilities throughout the city, meet with landlords, and help with government assistance. The Shelter is government funded for about half of the work that they do, so they must raise about $600k every year just to meet their budget needs. There is also a voucher system with several non-profit organizations including the Shelter's Thrift Store at 6-368 Industrial Avenue.Violence against women isn't a women's issue, it's a human issue. I really learned some powerful things about my friend Jason Neumann in this interview. He was vulnerable, charming, funny and even inspirational to me. If you are a realtor, or know a realtor, I believe you will really enjoy this interview. You can listen to it here. Jason Neumann of RE/MAX Kelowna was born in New Westminster, then lived in Abbotsford for 30 years. Moved to the Okanagan 15 years ago where he got into new construction sales and marketing up at Big White. Two years later he moved to Kelowna. His parents were builders, then he ran a lumber yard, then built roof trusses, then moved into engineering and shipping / receiving. The moment he decided to become a REALTOR®. Building the skill of networking and relating to people. Yes, that is an actual skill you can cultivate! Jason loves the fact that people put their trust in him for the most important transactions of their lives. Dealing with children when showing houses. What it’s like dealing with divorce and children, self esteem issues, and finally deciding to take care of yourself first. Some very powerful stories and life lessons! Dealing with insomnia, fatigue and other serious health issues. Awareness about the problem is the first step! For many of us, mental and spiritual challenges are even harder than physical ones. What is your reason WHY? The second step is learning how to direct your time and energy. Do the things that bring positive mental, physical and spiritual energy into your life, and avoid the things that drain that energy. How to deal with guilt from past mistakes. Real Estate is one of the best possible jobs you can ever do, but believe it or not, sometimes it can be extremely challenging. Top agents know how to manage their emotions – their own, as well as their clients. Jason and I believe that our clients want transparency above all else, even before advice. The delicate balance between being a single parent and having a more-than full time job, sometimes 7 days a week. What it’s like being on a reality TV show. You actually learn a lot… about yourself! Jason’s personal opinion about dating in Kelowna and online dating. Starting at the 27:28 mark, Jason and I have a frank discussion about the new rules that everyone dealing with real estate now face, both realtors and the public. Why it makes sense to use a real estate agent every time you’re buying or selling. Shoutout to Karen Mason from the Kelowna Women’s Shelter! Support the show (https://paypal.me/lukemenkes)

Gary and Roscoe are pleased and excited to welcome cabaret artist Beckie Menzie to Booth One this week. Beckie is an award-winning performer, teacher, song writer, musical director and vocal coach, a staple of the Windy City music scene, and nationally recognized as one of the country's finest cabaret entertainers. Along with her musical partner Tom Michael, they have been called, "Sizzling...immensely appealing...one of the most compelling duos in cabaret today!" Beckie is from Pierceton, IN, but a Chicago girl through and through. She learned piano at an early age and fell in love with music and the performing arts while hanging around the Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw, IN. She has performed at some of the nation's top clubs, theaters, concert halls, outdoor venues, and cabaret rooms. She most recently appeared at Carnegie Hall and the Auditorium Theatre. We play a few song excerpts throughout the podcast to give you a taste of her talent, style and singular musical gifts. Beckie and the boys chat about cabaret performers Michael Feinstein, Barbara Cook, Karen Mason, Sally Mayes, Julie Wilson, Bette Midler, Bernadette Peters, Marilyn Maye and Barbra Streisand. (Just to drop a few names!) We discuss Laura Benanti's latest show at the Cafe Carlyle in New York and the stellar reviews she received. Gary gives a shout out to the Therapy Players, Chicago's premier all-psychotherapist comedy improvisation troupe! Seems they're holding auditions looking for a few new recruits. If you or someone you love is mental health professional, check them out at www.therapyplayers.com. In addition to performing steadily with Tom, Beckie is also a vocal coach and teacher, has recently become engaged, and sings with Laura Freeman & Marianne Murphy Orland in a group called Girls Like Us. They'll be performing their new show Barbra, Bette and Bernadette at Chicago's famed Davenport's nightclub on November 19 & 20. Go here for more info and tickets. Beckie's various musical ventures are part of her BeMe Music empire. If you like The Golden Girls like we do, you'll LOVE the new action figures from Funko. Retirees Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia are posable vinyl figures 3.75 inches tall and ready for action! The four-figure set costs $25 and is only available from participating Target stores and New York Comic Con. Run, don't walk, to your nearest Target for holiday shopping magic. There's nothing like a country and western song title to bring a smile - and an occasional grimace - to your face. Gary cycles through the Best of the Worst Country-Western Song Titles of all time. Here's one - She Got the Gold Mine and I Got the Shaft. Beckie tells us about the country song she once wrote and one that she intends to. Roscoe inquires whether anyone can be taught how to sing, in an apparent attempt to jump start a cabaret career of his own. Beckie responds as only a true vocal/performance coach can. Don't worry, folks. Roscoe and I are probably not leaving the Booth One podcast for vocalist fame and fortune anytime soon! Chat Pack, anyone? We play a few rounds of our favorite conversational party game with Beckie. Kiss of Death: Jean Shepard, Female Country Voice with Muscle and Ambition. A mainstay of the Grand Ole Opry for more than 60 years, Ms. Shepard blazed the Country Music trail for other female singers like Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette. She brought a freewheeling, cheeky style to the eternal themes of heartache, cheating and marital discord, planting the flag for independent women. In the early 1950's, Ms. Shepard had hits with "The Root of All Evil (Is a Man)", "Many Happy Hangovers to You" and "Twice the Lovin' (in Half the Time)". She was small but her voice was powerful, pure and penetrating. She was also an expert yodeler. Ms. Shepard was an ardent champion of traditional country music throughout her lifetime. She was 82. Happy Anniversary to us as we celebrate our 25th Episode of Booth One! Sing along with the Flintstones as we toast a milestone in our podcast history. Sing Along Here As a token of this momentous occasion, Gary presents Roscoe with a "silver" quarter from the state commemorative collection, worth at most .25 cents.  Don't spend it all in one place, Roscoe. It's a Gallimaufry show today (gal·li·mau·fry ɡaləˈmôfrē/noun: plural noun: gallimaufries 1. a jumble or medley of things. 2. a dish made of diced from minced meat, especially a hash or ragout), as Gary and Roscoe explore a variety of topical subjects and current trends. Next up in my series of conversations with cabaret and pop musicians is Gretchen Reinhagen. Gretchen is a multi-award winning artist, receiving the coveted TRIPLE CROWN of cabaret awards in 2010: the Nightlife Award, Bistro Award and MAC Award - for her show “Special Kaye: A Tribute to the Incomparable Kaye Ballard” directed by Barry Kleinbort, with Musical Director David Gaines. Gretchen has worked with some of the biggest names in cabaret including Steve Ross and Karen Mason. Her shows cover a broad range of material from Musical Comedy to Blues and Rock. Former Back Stage and Citysearch critic Roy Sander said, “Gretchen Reinhagen's shows are marked by intelligence, warmth, a lovely spirit of benevolence, and fine vocals. It is always a pleasure to spend an hour in her company.” As both a singer and an actress, she's performed in a broad range of theaters and concert halls from the House of Blues in New Orleans to the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her professional theater credits include Janis Joplin in Beehive, Louise Segar in Always Patsy Cline, Domina in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the lead role of the therapist in the premiere of Mother Me Therapy at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York, and the Queen Mother in the European premiere of Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. At her recent show at the Metropolitan Room in Manhattan, I was struck by her ability to take on songs that are so strongly identified with other performers -- singing a "Streisand song" or a "Fanny Bryce" song, for example -- and show them from an altogether different perspective.  We'll talk about her inspirations for her art, how she approaches a lyric, and get some insight into the world of cabaret.  Learn more about Gretchen at www.gretchenreinhagen.com.
