Legendary composer John Kander (Chicago, Cabaret, Steel Pier, Zorba) shares rarified insider stories with Michael Riedel about the making of Chicago. Kander reminisces about creating epic musical hits with songwriting partner Fred Ebb and collaborating with Director/Choregrapher Bob Fosse. Kander also reveals the secret advice he received from dear friend Liza Minnelli. Chicago opened on Broadway in 1975, and in the shadow of the Tony-winning musical smash A Chorus Line, Chicago was overlooked for years. When Chicago returned to New York's City Center and transferred to Broadway in 1996, no one would have dreamed that the show would still be running in 2025, making it the longest running musical revival in Broadway history! This episode features never-before-heard excerpts from the interviews Michael Riedel recorded while writing his 2020 best-selling book Singular Sensation: The Triumph of Broadway.

We found out what happened to Bobby Long. Mostly. And on this episode we're joined by Mark Cantor, America's leading jazz film archivist. Mark is an expert in "Soundies", the early music videos/short films that played on Panoram video jukeboxes in bars, cafes and other public places across America throughout the 1940s. Yes, they had video jukeboxes, and music videos, as far back as the 1940s. We've crossed paths with Mark because he's uncovered an obscure Soundie titled Club Lollypop that stars Bobby Long, the legendary child star and tap dancer who dropped out of public life after his appearance with Sinatra in 1947's It Happened in Brooklyn. (See Episode 13 for more on this.) This week, we have a fascinating chat with Mark about his friendships with Mel Torme and Bill Miller, his incredible collection of rare jazz footage and his lifelong appreciation for Sinatra. We learn all about Soundies - and then, finally, you all get to find out what happened to Bobby Long. Mostly. Soundies featured in this episode: * Count Basie Orchestra with Jimmy Rushing - "Take Me Back, Baby" * Nat King Cole - "Errand Boy for Rhythm" * Gene Krupa and his Orchestra with Roy Eldrige and Anita O'Day - "Let Me Off Uptown" * Toni Lane - "The Day of Hitler's Funeral (aka When Hitler Kicks the Bucket)" * The Four Ginger Snaps - "Keep Smilin'" * Barry Wood - "Any Bonds Today?" * Arica Wilde - "You Never Know" * The Three Heat Waves - "Heat's On Again" * Robert 'Tex' Allen - "The Fella with the Fiddle" * Bobby Long, Marlene Cameron, Baby Barbara & others - "Club Lollypop" Other clips: * Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong - "Lonesome Man Blues" (from The Frank Sinatra Show, December 31st, 1952) * Duke Ellington - "Take the A Train" (from Reveille with Beverly) Mark Cantor's book, The Soundies: A History and Catalog of Jukebox Film Shorts of the 1940s, is out now. To learn more about Soundies and watch a huge collection of them, check out Mark's website, Celluloid Improvisations, and join his The World of Soundies Facebook group. He began tapdancing at the age of six, and by age ten was performing professionally on the vaudeville circuit. He toured the country throughout his teenage years, including gigs at the Majestic Theatre in Paterson, NJ and Steel Pier in Atlantic City, NJ, working alongside some of the biggest names in the country. In 1942, he was featured in a Soundie named Club Lollypop, dancing alongside a young girl named Marlene Cameron who he had also worked with during his stage performances. He may have also appeared in other short films of this period. By 1946, he had moved to Santa Monica, CA. His big break came in the form of a starring role singing and tapdancing to "I Believe" alongside Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Durante in the 1947 MGM musical, It Happened in Brooklyn. He continued touring for several more months. Then, for unknown reasons, he seems to have quit showbiz and public life entirely. At some stage, he may have moved to New York and then back to California again. In 1951, at the age of 19, he enlisted in the United States Navy, most likely after being drafted. He served in the Korean War aboard the USS Philippine Sea as an aerographer's mate third class until 1955. He then led a quiet and private life for the remainder of the 20th century. He married once in 1960 and divorced in 1971. When That's Entertainment, Part 2 was released in 1976, he was miscredited in the "I Believe" segment as "Billy Roy." (This is the name of a different child star from It Happened in Brooklyn.) Decades went by and despite ever-increasing interest in Sinatra, Old Hollywood and the MGM story, the story of Bobby Long was apparently never investigated. Logsdon seems to have done no interviews and did not speak publicly about his tapdancing career. He lived around the Orange County area and worked in technical fields, including computer-assisted design, during at least the 1980s. He married again in the early 1980s and stayed in that relationship until his death on October 31st, 2005. In the late 2010s, interest grew in Bobby Long through comment sections on YouTube and other websites. Numerous people expressed awe at his prodigious ability, an interest in what might have happened to him, and surprise at his seeming to disappear from public life. In 2022-23, this was investigated by this podcast. It was determined where he ended up and that he seems to have led a quiet life by design, and so the case is now closed.
From the conversation that I had with Julio Agustin, who is a Theatrical consultant and entrepreneur, I have some key takeaways I wanted to share. First, resisting change and things shifting often makes your experience during the change or shift worse. Do your best to release control and let the change happen. On the flip side we all reserve the right to change our mind. If you want to change or shift, do it. You have a right too, it's your choice. Finally, let all your creativity out. Live the biggest fullest life you can, and let your creativity lead the way! Julio Agustin is an associate professor and director of Music Theatre at Elon University. He has performed in six Broadway shows (Chicago, Fosse, Steel Pier, others). As a director-choreographer, he has been nominated for such awards as the Audelco Award, Best Director (Sweet Charity @ New Haarlem Arts Theatre, NYC); Syracuse Area Live Theatre, Best Choreographer (In the Heights @ Hangar Theatre); and Houston Press, Best Choreographer (Guys and Dolls @ Theatre Under the Stars). He has written the book and lyrics to two musicals and is the author of The Professional Actor's Handbook: From Casting Call to Curtain Call and also “Navigating the Musical Theatre Industry for Latinx Actors” in the upcoming Latinx Actor Training published by Routledge. By Davy Crockett Thomas Joseph Osler (1940-2023) of Camden, New Jersey, was a mathematician, former national champion distance runner, and author. His published running training theories have made a deep impact on distance running for multiple generations. His book, Serious Runner's Handbook became a classic book on running. He was the first to verbalize in a way that was really understandable to most athletes. Runner's World wrote, "Tom Osler was among those who helped push and pull America toward the running mania of the 1970s." His pioneer 1976 24-hour run in New Jersey brought renewed focus on the 24-hour run in America. He won multiple national championships and was inducted into the Road Runners Club of America Hall of Fame. During his running career, he ran in more than 2,100 races of various distances. Of his youth, Osler said, “I was a sickly little kid at 12 or 13 and didn't have many friends. This annoyed me, so I decided to leap head-first into every sport there was. I was terrible. I came home night after night looking like an ad for the Blue Cross." He was an excellent student, but purposely lowered his grades for a while in order to fit in as a “regular guy.” He said, "One day a bunch of us decided to see who could run the most around a field and to my shock I could out jog everybody. So that's when I realized I was born to be a runner!" His gang in his neighborhood picked distance running as "that day's form of athletic torture." When he was still 13 in 1954. He jumped in head-first and started to run. He learned about track from his brother-in-law and discovered that there were races of a mile and further. He also learned about the current local running hero and Olympian, Browning Ross (1924-1998). Browning Ross wins the 1954 AAU 30K Championship. Young Tom Osler on left. "I read in the newspaper that there was going to be this big race in Atlantic City, the National 30-kilometer championship and it was going to start and finish on the Boardwalk at Steel Pier. I got myself a bus ticket and went down there and stood in front of Steel Pier and waited for this race. I remember thinking that runners must be very powerful people—big muscles, well developed like Mr. Atlas! And what shows up but all these skinny people. It was a national championship, but I doubt it had more than 20 or 25 people in it. That's how it was in those days. Browning Ross showed up and I couldn't believe what a small rather insignificant looking human being this hero of mine that I'd read so much about was. The race was several laps, so you saw them come by several times." Someone asked Osler to hold the string at the finish line as Ross won the race and he got in the finishing picture. Osler said, "I lived in a row house in Camden, New Jersey and there was a Mack truck factory at the end of the block that we estimated occupied a quarter of a mile. So, I ran around the block four times. My brother-in-law looked at the kitchen clock to time it and it came out to something like six and a half or seven minutes. We figured with a year's training we could probably get it down to a good racing speed. Which I did." He had dreams he would be the first person to break the four-minute mile. He said, “When you are young, you have dreams that seem very attainable. Every day, I went out and ran four times around the block as fast as I could. So, in a year I went out for the track team as a sophomore at Camden High and was their best miler-- I ran a 5:10. I was the only person running year-round that I knew of. In 1954, England's Roger Bannister was the first to break the four-minute mile barrier, which crushed Osler's dream. His best mile was 4:54, which was disappointing to him, but he was one of the best high school milers in Camden. He finished his first marathon when he was 16 years old with a time of 3:27. In high school, he excelled in his classes, especially in the sciences.
History forgot to record that Sinatra's first acting role was inherited from a sea lion. Both stage & film versions of HIGHER AND HIGHER (1944) were poorly reviewed as a whole but succeeded anyway on the back of raves about a single performer, who, despite being tacked on to the haphazard plot at the last minute, stole the show with his unique talent. In the film version, Sinatra. In the original stage production, a sea lion named Sharkey. And their overlap did not end there. In many ways, Sinatra and Sharkey lived parallel lives. They played many of the same venues, from Steel Pier and Madison Square Garden to Radio City Music Hall. They came of age in the same era and ran in the same circles. They were both considered the best in their fields and both covered songs popularised by Bing Crosby. Both of them worked with Ella Fitzgerald. This week, we're joined by Gary Bohan Jr, author of a new book on Sharkey's surreal career. Gary is the great-grandson of Mark Huling, Sharkey's original trainer from Seal College in Kingston, New York. Six years of dedicated archival research went into Gary's book, published just months ago - a true labor of love, and a delightful, unpredictable read. Far from a dark story of animal exploitation, Sharkey emerges from history as a true performer who was dedicated to his craft and deeply loved performing. (He is not actually smoking in the episode photo.) Gary Bohan Jr's SHARKEY: WHEN SEA LIONS WERE STARS OF SHOW BUSINESS (1907-1958), is out now and comes highly recommended by this podcast. Order it from your local bookstore or buy it from the publisher, SUNY Press, here. Follow Gary Bohan Jr: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook. Broadcast originally aired on Monday, September 19, at 9:30 am on WRCR RadioWe turned our attention to the life and legacy of the actor Burgess Meredith, who lived in Pomona, NY for thirty years. Meredith's son, Jonathan Meredith, joined Clare Sheridan to share his memories of his father, growing up in Rockland County, and his father's eclectic group of creative friends and neighbors, including Maxwell Anderson, Alan Jay Lerner, and more.Jonathan is a professional musician living in Grass Valley, California. As a teen, he collaborated with Tony and Hunt Sales (sons of the comedian Soupy Sales) and fellow Rocklander Jon Pousette-Dart to form the group Tony and the Tigers, which opened for the Animals at Steel Pier in Atlantic City and performed twice on the popular television program Hullabaloo.Burgess Meredith, the raspy-voiced character actor with unruly hair and a grimacing yet humorous nature, displayed versatile acting skills that kept him before cameras and on-stage for more than seventy years. He began life as George Burgess, the son of a Cleveland doctor. The family dissolved early on, and Meredith said he took solace in acting in school plays. He was accepted at Amherst College on a scholarship in 1926, but finances forced him to leave school. He worked as a merchant seaman, tie salesman, and peddler of vacuum cleaners before drifting to New York City and Eva Le Gallienne's Student Repertory Group. “I had no money,” Meredith said in a 1976 interview, “but Eva took me in.”He left the group in the early 1930s for roles in The Threepenny Opera, Little Ol' Boy, The Barretts of Wimpole Street, and many other Broadway and off-Broadway productions. The playwright Maxwell Anderson, who was living in Rockland County at the time, became aware of Meredith's talents and wrote the play Winterset with him in mind. A melodrama of a son out to avenge his father's death, Winterset became not only a Broadway hit in 1935 but also a motion picture a year later, with Meredith re-creating his role as the son, Mio. It was the first of three stage portrayals that established Burgess Meredith as a significant actor. The other two were Van Van Dorn, who escapes civilization for a single evening in Anderson's play High Tor (1937), and Stephen Minch, who is permitted to return to the years of his youth in The Star-Wagon (also 1937). The critic Wolcott Gibbs praised him in the New Yorker as “brilliant, impressive, heartbreaking, vibrant and eloquent.”If the phrase “actor's actor” has any validity, Meredith was its prototype: His early credits also include Shakespeare's Hamlet and Macbeth. He found an entire new career late in life as a scheming villain on television and as Rocky Balboa's crusty manager in films. The image on this page is his portrayal of Van Van Dorn in High Tor.***The Historical Society of Rockland County is a nonprofit educational institution and principal repository for original documents and artifacts relating to Rockland County. Its headquarters are a four-acre site featuring a history museum and the 1832 Jacob Blauvelt House in New City, New York.www.RocklandHistory.org

As I was thinking about my upcoming conversation with David Loud, author of "Facing the Music", a quote from piano man, Billy Joel, struck a chord with me. Joel said “I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music. It seemed to me that the healing power of David Loud's lifelong passion for music helped him to triumph over the ravages of Parkinson's disease that could have destroyed his career as a Broadway music director, arranger and actor. I seldom have time to read memoirs or biographies. Reading is one of the two main ways I have to temporarily disconnect from the chaos around me, and I preferentially read fiction with powerfully drawn characters, and fast moving storylines. But I was captivated by David Loud's memoir which I read straight through, on a rainy Vancouver weekend. As a long-time devotee of the performing arts and an on-line theatre reviewer, I loved the chance to vicariously experience the backstage activity that audience members rarely see. And as I reflected ironically, my book, Growing Older Living Younger, the account of my recovery from spinal stenosis and back surgery, is as much memoir as it is science. “To see your heroes fail,” continues Loud, “is to learn something really important at the beginning of someone's career. Anybody can have a bomb. Anybody can flop. And to start out your career with a monumental flop, the way I did, boy do I appreciate a show that goes well and hits now!” We're speaking with a multi-hyphenate legend, here. “That need to be in the theatre, that yearning to be in a musical or to work on a musical and have that be your life is so powerful,” says Loud. “And it bites us at different times in our lives. I knew for six years old what I wanted to do with my life and I never waivered.” While Mr. Loud knew what he wanted, he still had to figure out how and where he belonged in the industry – which took him a few tried to make sure he was going down the right road. After his first Broadway musical, the legendary Merrily We Roll Along, flopped – he had to pivot. And now, in 2022, Mr. Loud continues to work with Parkinson's disease, still figuring out ways to pivot and continue to tell his stories. David Loud, famed Broadway music director, arranger, performer, and teacher continues the multi-hyphenate theatre artist legacy by adding author to his hyphens. His new book, Facing the Music, is now available for purchase. “I have always been a multi-hyphenate, I think,” says Loud. “I always found this niche for myself of the pianist who can say a few lines on stage. I've never quite fit into only one category. I love doing lots of different things in the theatre. I've always wanted to do everything in the theatre.” And now, theatre lovers everywhere can read about Mr. Loud's fantastic journey in show business. One can begin to understand what a multi-hyphenate's life was life before the word multi-hyphenate grew in popularity. “When we moved to New York to go into showbusiness – we were not graduates of musical theatre academies,” continues Loud. “We learned by doing and we learned from our friends and we learned by imitating and we went to auditions and we figured out what worked and what didn't work. We had to be self-starters in that way.” In this episode, we speak about our love for musical theatre, what it was really like to work with Stephen Sondheim, how multi-hyphenating stems out of need to be a part of any aspect of the theatre, his experience working on Merrily We Roll Along, casting choices that have excited us throughout the years, and the importance of failure. David Loud occupies a unique place in Broadway history. In addition to his distinguished career as one of Broadway's most respected music directors and arrangers, he originated three Broadway roles as an actor, including his appearance in the original cast of Stephen Sondheim's legendary failure (and cult classic) Merrily We Roll Along, directed by Harold Prince. He also appeared alongside Zoe Caldwell and Audra McDonald in Terrence McNally's Tony-winning play, Master Class. About Facing the Music – Musical Director and arranger David Loud, a legendary Broadway talent, recounts his wildly entertaining and deeply poignant trek through the wilderness of his childhood and the edge-of-your-seat drama of a career on, in, under, and around Broadway for decades. He reveals his struggle against the ravages of Parkinson's and triumphs repeatedly. This memoir is also a remarkable love letter to music. Loud is the 'Ted Lasso' of the theater business, ever the optimist. An inspiration to all! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We talk a lot about being grateful during the hardest things in life and David tells me about being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and the peace he has found since. David is releasing his memoir Facing the Music in February 2022 be sure to check that out. The 1944 Great Atlantic hurricane was destructive and powerful and swept across a large portion of the US east coast in September 1944. An area of tropical thunderstorms was first identified well east of the Lesser Antilles on September 4, the disturbance only became well organized to be considered a tropical storm on September 9 northeast of the Virgin Islands. Moving west-northwest, the storm gradually intensified and reached peak intensity as a Category 4-equivalent hurricane on September 13 north of the Bahamas after curving northward. A day later, the storm passed by the Outer Banks and later made landfall on Long Island as a weaker hurricane on September 15. Passing close to the Outer Banks, strong winds were reported across eastern North Carolina, and knocked out telecommunications networks on the Outer Banks. Small homes were leveled by the winds. The hurricane was infamous for the amount of damage it caused along the New Jersey coastline. The shore towns on Long Beach Island, Atlantic City and Cape May all suffered major damage. Long Beach Island, Barnegat Island and Brigantine all lost their causeways to the mainland in the storm effectively cutting them off from the rest of New Jersey. Additionally, both islands lost hundreds of homes. In Atlantic City the hurricane's storm surge forced water into the lobbies of many of the resorts famous hotels. The Atlantic City boardwalk suffered major damage and in some places was deposited several blocks inland from the beaches. My mother-in-law and her family rode out the storm in a rooming house 2 blocks from the beach, protected by pieces of the boardwalk that logged against the structure. Both the famed Steel Pier and Heinz Pier were partially destroyed by the hurricane with only the Steel Pier subsequently rebuilt. Rain totals of 7 inches occurred in Hartford Connecticut and the city of Bridgeport saw the greatest official total at 10.7 inches. Tobacco and fruit damage in Connecticut totaled to about $2 million, with similar overall damage costs occurring in Rhode Island. A total of 28 people died throughout New England as a result of the storm. On September 9, 1944, the storm that was officially upgraded to a tropical system would, in the next week result in one of the greatest destructive hurricanes on record for the resort beach towns of New Jersey. One is from 1945 at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City New Jersey and the other is from 1940 recorded at the Famous Door on Fifty Second Street in New Your City. The 1945 remote has a few vocals by Frances Wayne and Woody has a few vocals as well. The Puzzler is back this week so I hope you enjoy part three of our May big band clarinetists salute. Sensational storytelling from actor, activist, veteran, sober, surfer, husband, father, grandpa, success story on celluloid and in life, Gregory Harrison. And, the whole gorgeousness thing. We talked his Catalina upbringing, playing baseball and the guitar. A medic during the Vietnam War, stationed in Germany, he set a precedent as the first non-religious conscientious objector. A medic, he set the stage for Trapper John MD, which launched him to stardom. We touched on Logan's Run, Sisters, Henry Jaglom's The M Word, where we met, his Broadway debut in Steel Pier, his just before the pandemic stage turn starring in The Lion in Winter, his current first soap spin in General Hospital, and why it took him so long. Returning to work on 9-1-1, after 8 months of stay-at-home like a good COVID crazy, new hope, and good sleep with the new president. As fabulous as all of that was to hear, it's Gregory's telling of meeting his wife of 40 years on Battle of The Network Stars, the sexy start, to his cocaine-fueled bottom, and what brought him there, to getting sober at Betty Ford and finding his worst nightmare unfold before his eyes. And ours. 34 years sober, his humility, honesty, and self-awareness lead to one of the best "shares" I've yet to hear. Grace, gratitude, inspiration, and fun were served up in heaping portions. Like a great meal, I leave happy, sated, and wanting more. Easy on the eyes, heart, and soul, I adore this man. In this episode, David describes the life of a teen idol, one that involves being stuffed in the trunk of a Toyota to escape a crowd at Madison Square Garden, only to be left alone in a dressing room in Queens for three hours. As Gunnar Nelson says, "now that's Rock & Roll." Cassidy is as revealing as he his reflective in talking about sneaking by 30,000 fans disguised in a wig and women's clothes before a record crowd at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City. ACprimetime Radio talks with Steel Pier's Anthony Catanoso. Listen to the interview with Mel Taylor from March 15, 2017. Preparation is now underway to place cranes & other equipment on the iconic Steel Pier on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Special cranes will be used to erect the long awaited, 225 ft observation wheel that will overlook the Atlantic City Boardwalk by late Summer 2017. A side access road was built, along with a beefing up of the Boardwalk...in order to safely move heavy equipment back and forth across the boards in front of the former TAJ MAHAL.....soon to be Hard Rock Hotel Casino.
AC Primetime w/ Mel Taylor. Atlantic City News, Info, Events.
As we reported two weeks ago, Hard Rock entertainment will soon be the new owner of the former Taj Mahal Casino on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. That is very good news for this section of our wooden way that was sitting empty and quiet for much of the summer of 2016 all thanks to daily picketing by using 54 members many of whom did not want to strike against Taj Mahal owner Mr. Carl Icahn . But that's another story for another day. It looks like by the summer of 2018 hard rock will be up and running on that massive property the Taj Mahal. This is certainly good news for Anthony Catanoso…the man who runs Steel Pier, right across the Boardwalk from the former Taj Mahal. This should also speed up development of the $14 million observation wheel the 227 foot high, new age Ferris Wheel that's been sitting offshore in containers ready to be erected on the historic Pier. The Taj Mahal Casino has been closed since October 10. It will soon be controlled and owned by a group of investors one of them being Hard Rock. They’re teaming up with two well-known developers in the area Jingoli and Morris. Jingoli is best known for the current redevelopment of the Albany Avenue area site of the former Atlantic City high school. Moving very fast at building the brand-new Stockton University Boardwalk campus here in Atlantic City. They call it the Island campus. I like to call with the Boardwalk Campus, a much cooler, more intuitive name. I’ll have to ask Dr Harvey Kesselman if he agrees with me, when ACprimetime visits with the Stockton President in a few days. Getting back to HARD ROCK & TAJ, it looks like $300 million is what it will take to allow Hard Rock & Jingoli and Morris to transform this massive property. One of the biggest, if not the biggest footprints in Atlantic City. Maybe the best part of the story is that it's probably gonna provide up to 3000 new temporary and permanent jobs. We always had a sneaking suspicion that Hard Rock was going to eventually take over the former Taj. One clue: Hard Rock Cafe was staying put. Even though it was quite dead down on that side of the Boardwalk in front of the shuttered TAJ. Hard Rock Cafe knew that eventually the mother ship would come in and save that property. Operating through thick and thin even with the casino hotel shutting down back in October 2016. Another success story or another smiling adjacent property would be Bart Blatstein's Showboat Hotel. That certainly bodes well for his investment in the former Showboat Casino now focused on being primarily a Showboat Hotel that's good news. This should also boost evaluations of Blatstein's recently purchased volleyball court / parcel of land, a spot in between Showboat and the former Revel Casino Hotel. And Garden Pier, right in front of the former Revel, now owned by Bart and his Tower Investments, that value most likely has increased from its $1.5 million price tag. So does Glenn Straub and his former Revel casino benefit from the Taj Mahal purchase by hard rock? In the long-term probably yes. But we think in the short term, the value or the interest in getting the Revel up and running is muted at best. Think about it, what investor now wants to come in and try to deal with Mr. Strabo and get the former Revel up and running while knowing that arguably one of the most successful aggressive and smart brand names hard rock is getting to ready to launch just down the Boardwalk? What's our guess? We like to speculate just a little bit. We think that Mr. Straub will eventually find it more advantageous to sell. Still no gaming license for Straub, or his partner/tenant in the property Robert Landino. Both have NO Gaming Licenses. REVEL property will most likely see half-decent profit since Straub purchased it for just $82 million. The building price was closer to $2 billion. We believe now this is pure speculation, that investors that might gain access to that incredible property formerly known as the Revel and the surro...

Co-director and choreographer of Broadway's "The Book of Mormon", Casey Nicholaw, talks about his initial reaction on reading the irreverent new musical and how it was to work with Matt Parker and Trey Stone, heretofore most experienced with work in animation for "South Park". Nicholaw also talks about his early work at the San Diego Junior Theatre, his decision to leave California at age 19 and embark on a career in New York without even a completed college degree under his belt; his early acting gigs regionally and his later New York appearances in the original companies of "Crazy for You", "The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public", "Victor/Victoria", "Steel Pier" and "Seussical"; how he gathered his friends to start building piece to showcase his choreographic skills; how a gig as a replacement choreographer for Encores! 2004 "Bye Bye Birdie" led directly to his Broadway choreographic debut with "Spamalot" and how that immediately led to his directing debut with "The Drowsy Chaperone"; his work on the still developing "Minsky's" and "Robin and the Seven Hoods" back in California; and what he might have up his sleeve for the stage adaptation of Disney's "Aladdin", debuting this summer in Seattle. With Theresa Rebeck's "The Understudy" soon to close at the Roundabout and Douglas Carter Beane's "Mr. and Mrs. Fitch" beginning rehearsals at Second Stage, director Scott Ellis discusses his attraction to both projects and the delays and opportunities that caused each of them to land in New York a bit later than originally expected. He also discusses his early and absolute conviction that he was destined for a career as an actor, and how quickly that changed; how his friendship with John Kander and Fred Ebb from his acting in "The Rink" helped him to land his very first directing job, a revival of "Flora the Red Menace" at the Vineyard Theatre; the enormous opportunities afforded to him by artistic director Todd Haimes at the Roundabout, where Ellis is Associate Artistic Director; how and why he and Susan Stroman came to devise "And The World Goes Round"; his early work on the plays "Picnic" and "A Month in the Country" after his successes with "A Little Night Music" at the New York City Opera and "She Loves Me" -- Roundabout's first musical; the opportunity to collaborate on the creation of "Steel Pier" and the challenges of opening an original book musical in New York without benefit of an out-of-town tryout; why he feels "The Look of Love", his Bacharach and David revue didn't succeed -- and why he thinks it was always meant to be done "drinks in hand"; and how he tackled "Twelve Angry Men", a seemingly familiar work which had never been produced professionally in New York. Original air date - January 11, 2010.
