The actor, singer, and podcaster, Patrick Oliver Jones has been in the performing arts, both onstage and onscreen, for more than 30 years. Originally from Birmingham Alabama, he brought his Southern charm to New York City in 2008 with dreams of Broadway. And he's gotten close with roles in off-Broadway world premieres, touring nationally with The Addams Family and Evita, and the pre-Broadway cast of First Wives Club that never quite made it. Having collaborated with Tony-winning directors such as Jerry Zaks, Randy Skinner, and a favorite StoryBeat guest, Richard Maltby Jr., he's gotten to perform alongside Broadway talents like Joey Fatone, Alfonso Ribeiro, Faith Prince, and Andrea McArdle. And he has found regional theater acclaim with Henry and SALT Award nominations for standout performances in Fun Home and Crazy for You. On camera, there have been numerous national commercials, award-winning short films, and co-starring roles on TV shows like Blue Bloods, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Imposters. In 2022 he received the Communicator Award of Distinction from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts for his work in podcasting. He currently produces and hosts three performing arts podcasts: Why I'll Never Make It, which is in its eighth season, Closing Night, which focuses on Broadway history, and The Spotlight Series in which he talks with those making a difference in the arts and beyond. For the record, I've been a guest on Why I'll Never Make It discussing my career in show business and how I created Jekyll & Hyde, the Musical with Frank Wildhorn. I've got to tell you, it was a lot of fun for me to do the show with Patrick, and I highly urge you to give it a listen.
Dylan and Connor are joined by 2024 Tony Award nominee Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer (Spamalot, Beetlejuice). This beloved musical theatre comedienne sat down for a hilarious, insightful, and genuine look into her career so far. Connor and Dylan don't shy away from asking all about their favorite of Leslie's credits, including Legally Blonde, Hairspray, Beetlejuice, and Something Rotten. Of course they get into the recent revival of Monty Python's Spamalot, where Leslie's improv, belting, and musical theatre chops came together in her portrayal of Lady of the Lake. Leslie shares heartwarming memories of her late mother, as well as the story of nearly starring in the Funny Girl Broadway revival that never was. The dolls rave about Nicole Scherzinger's upcoming Broadway turn, Leslie's friendship with Michelle Visage, and a full circle story about Faith Prince. They get all the deets about Lady of the Lake: The Farewell Tour on June 5 at Joe's Pub, and the companion video series (viewable on Leslie's Instagram) in the wake of being nominated for a Tony Award. Gagged! They tease recent show-goings to Illinoise, Water for Elephants, and Stereophonic in this fabulous chat. This weeks special guest Big Court The Last Dragon (sometimes listed as Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon) is a 1985 American martial arts comedy film produced by Rupert Hitzig for Berry Gordy and directed by Michael Schultz.[4] The film stars Taimak, Vanity, Julius Carry, Christopher Murney, Keshia Knight Pulliam, and Faith Prince. Choreography was created by Lester Wilson and Lawrence Leritz. The Last Dragon was released in theaters by TriStar Pictures on March 22, 1985. The film was a financial success despite a mixed reception by critics, and is considered a cult classic. In New York City, Leroy Green (also known as "Bruce Leeroy") has dreams of becoming a great martial artist like his idol Bruce Lee. His master explains that he has reached the final level of martial arts accomplishment known as "The Last Dragon." Martial artists who reach this final level are said to be able to concentrate such mystical energy into their hands that they begin to glow. Only a true martial arts master would be able to exhibit "The Glow" over his entire body. Leroy doesn't fully understand and, in possession of a medal supposedly belonging to Bruce Lee, Leroy embarks upon a spiritual journey to find Master Sum Dum Goy, whom his master claims can help Leroy unlock the power of "The Glow."BlackBusters is a podcast focused on reviewing, celebrating, re-living and critiquing Black film. From the movies we all know and love to those hidden gems, there is no movie too big or small to be praised or roasted. Join our hosts Director/Comedian/Actor @biggjah and movie/podcast connoisseur Tony Price as they explore the legacy, impact and influence of Black cinema.

Happy Holidays everyone! I can't think of a better way to celebrate than listening to an in-depth interview with Broadway legend and 4-time Tony nominee Faith Prince. Tune in to hear her tell many of the fascinating stories of her career, including the failed Terrence McNally play that she worked on with Nathan Lane, the major Broadway revival she turned down, why a rehearsal with Arthur Laurents caused her to call her therapist, a short-lived feud with Jerome Robbins, how Terrence McNally got her into doing straight plays, why Bells Are Ringing couldn't run as long as it should've, why she worked personally with Christopher Renshaw on The King and I, what she learned while touring with Billy Elliot, and more. You won't want to miss this fascinating conversation.

When was the last time you tried something new? Was it hard? Was it scary? Was it fun? Trying new things can take us outside of our comfort zones and into places of uncertainty, which can be a bit scary ... for kids AND grown-ups. This episode is special. I mean… really special. Ari Axelrod is an artist and I've seen him in action, growing throughout the years. The episode is sort of broken down into three parts. What crafts a great cabaret? Our views on the multi-hyphenate. And Jewish identities in showbusiness, which is a huge topic of conversation right now. When it comes to cabaret, according to Axelrod, cabaret should be perfectly imperfect. It is the art of being yourself on purpose. So what are the pitfalls an artist creating a concert or cabaret can run into? What is the purpose for which you're doing one? How can you best prepare? And what does it really mean when you choose not to memorize your lyrics… “I want to hear the lyrics as you. I don't want to hear it as the song because I'll tune out. It's the difference between being a tour guide and a travel agent. A tour guide says, “Let me show you all of the things. Let me facilitate your journey. The travel agent says, ‘Where do you want to go? I will help you go to wherever you need to go.'” When it comes to the multi-hyphenate, it's simple to Ari. “It reminds me of what you said before. Straight, cis, white men – they have the keys to the door,” says Axelrod. “People who come from marginalized communities, and whatever marginalization that is, they have to find other ways into the building. And sometimes it means having multiple ways in because the front door is locked for them. So we have to climb through the window, or go through the chimney, or building another building. It's exactly what you're saying, that's what being a multi-hyphenate is. It's telling our stories in all of the ways, flexing all of our artistic muscles and integrity, to be able to reflect the full capacity of our world.” And the most important topic of this episode – what it means and feels like to be Jewish today. And how does that relate to our work in the industry? Anti-semitism, unfortunately, is rearing its ugly head once again. So, how do respond to it? And more importantly – how do we stop it? “Anti-semitism looks different on the left than on the right. It looks different here. Everywhere. I think the thing that people don't understand – the main problem, specifically, within our industry is that there is a lack of education in terms of what a Jew looks like. What a Jew is.” Ari is an actor, director, singer, and Jewish activist. He recently received the 2022 Bistro Award for Theatrical Performance in Song for his show, "Ari's Arias." His award-winning show, "A Place For Us: A Celebration of Jewish Broadway," began with a sold-out run at the historic Birdland Jazz Club, featuring six-time Emmy & Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh, and has since grown to international acclaim performing to sold-out audiences around the world. In 2020, he received a MAC Award nomination for Best Male Vocalist and won the BroadwayWorld Award for Best Live Zoom Performance. Ari Axelrod's first solo show, "Taking the Wheel," directed by Tony Award winner Faith Prince, and music directed by multiple MAC Award winner Alex Rybeck, has been performed in numerous cities around the country. Ari's work as a director has been seen at the Tony Award-winning Paper Mill Playhouse, Birdland Jazz Club, 54 Below, and The Green Room 42. Ari is a recipient of The Jewish Week's prestigious 36 Under 36 Award, which "honors 36 noteworthy Jewish leaders, all 36 years old or younger, who make New York — and its many Jewish communities — better. These entrepreneurs, young leaders, and changemakers bring remarkable energy and new ideas to religion, philanthropy, the arts, Jewish learning, campus life, social action, inclusion, and justice. This special Halloween edition of Broadway Nation! This is the first part of my conversation with Adam Abraham, author of Attack of the Monster Musical – A Cultural History of Little Shop Of Horrors. In this terrific new book Adam relates the unlikely story of how Roger Corman's schlocky, low budget, 1960's monster movie was transformed 20 years later into a smash hit, long-running, Off-Broadway musical that became an international sensation and spawned a hit film musical adaptation as well. And of course, today Little Shop Of Horrors is a hit all over again and can currently be seen in another long running off-Broadway production. Adam Abraham is a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Auburn University, and he also has taught at Virginia Commonwealth University, NYU, and Harvard. His previous books include When Magoo Flew: The Rise And Fall of Animation Studio UPA, and Plagiarizing The Victorian Novel: Imitation, Parody, Aftertext. He has also written for film, television, and theater. Attack of the Monster Musical provides us with a fascinating, in depth, look into the dynamic partnership of Howard Ashman & Alan Mencken and their creation of what I believe is one of the best and most perfectly crafted musicals of all time. Topics discussed in this episode include: How Howard Ashman was influenced by the cast album of GYPSY; how he discovered Roger Corman's film in the first place; his first musical The Candy Shop; the truth behind the legend that Corman shot the original movie in just two days; NYC's Off Broadway scene during the late 1970s and early 80s; the WPA Theater; how an early version of Little Shop bombed at the BMI Workshop; the casting of Ellen Greene & Lee Wilcoff (and how Nathan Lane & Faith Prince were almost in the original cast); why the show never moved to Broadway; what Cameron Mackintosh, David Geffin & the Shubert Organization have to do with the show; how the dream team of Ashman & Menken worked together; and the tragic loss of Howard Ashman. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Donna McKechnie, Legendary Broadway Star & Author of “Time Steps: My Musical Comedy Life” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Donna McKechnie, is a legendary star who exemplifies the meaning of the phrase “triple threat”, because she dances, acts and sings with equal perfection. She is regarded internationally as one of Broadway's foremost singing and dancing leading ladies, who will forever be remembered and adored for creating the iconic role of “Cassie” in “A Chorus Line”, earning her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, as well as a Drama Desk Award and a Theatre World Special Award. She's also starred on Broadway in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”, “The Education of Hyman Kaplan”, “On the Town”, “Promises, Promises”, “Company”, “The Visit”, “State Fair”, for which she won the Fred Astaire Award for Best Female Dancer, and a Drama Desk Award nomination, and “Sondheim: A Musical Tribute”, which she also choreographed. She's starred in numerous musical productions throughout the country and in London's West End, including “Follies”, “Annie Get Your Gun”, Mack and Mabel”, “Gypsy”, “Can-Can”, “Pajama Game” and many more. She's appeared in many TV shows including HBO Specials, the Tonight Show, “Fame”, “Cheers”, “Family Ties”, and who can ever forget her as “Amanda Harris” in “Dark Shadows”. She was one of the stars in “FOUR GIRLS FOUR”, a wonderful concert series with Andrea McArdle, Faith Prince and Maureen McGovern And if that weren't enough, she wrote a poignant, intensely personal and compelling memoir, entitled, “Time Steps: My Musical Comedy Life”For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ https://www.donnamckechnie.com/https://www.facebook.com/donna.mckechniehttps://www.instagram.com/stepkickstepturn/https://mobile.twitter.com/donnamckechniehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/donna-mckechnie-a6ba259 #DonnaMcKechnie #harveybrownstoneinterviews

One of the main themes and messages of this podcast has always been that success can mean different things to different people, and how someone gets there, if they get there, seems to take a different path each time. Today's episode is with someone that I had the privilege of working with in the musical adaptation of First Wives Club back in 2015 in Chicago (with Faith Prince and Christine Sherrill). We were gearing up for a hopeful Broadway transfer that unfortunately never happened. But Carmen Cusack gave a memorable performance in that show and a few years later went on to star in her Broadway debut of Bright Star and most recently Flying Over Sunset. Her journey to Broadway has been a very unique one – from Denver and Texas to London and Shanghai. But as you'll hear in her stories, the bumpy road to success is as much a personal journey as it is a professional one... Jazz lounges not Broadway theaters are her true musical home Her tumultuous relationship with Sunday in the Park with George James Lapine and Flying Over Sunset Through the loss of theater during Covid, she finds her musical voice Find this and more episodes at whyillnevermakeit.com. GUYS AND DOLLS COMPOSER: Frank Loesser LYRICIST: Frank Loesser BOOK: Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling DIRECTOR: George S. Kauffman CHOREOGRAPHER: Michael Kidd PRINCIPLE CAST: Robert Alda (Sky), Isabel Bigley (Sarah), Vivian Blaine (Adelaide), Sam Levene (Nathan) OPENING DATE: Nov 24, 1950 CLOSING DATE: Nov 28, 1953 PERFORMANCES: 1,200 SYNOPSIS: Gambler Nathan Detroit needs $1000 to secure a place for his illegal games. When he runs into fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, he bets him $1000 that Sky cannot take the pious Sister Sarah Brown out on a date. Producers enchanted by Damon Runyon's short story The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown sought to have it adapted into a musical. Book writer Abe Burrows suggested the benefits of introducing a secondary couple whose storyline could comedically compliment the romantic leads, but as he developed the new characters, their plot quickly became intertwined with the original love story. Guys and Dolls became a show with equally significant, dual narratives. When character actor Sam Levene was cast as Nathan Detroit, his lack of musical talent dictated major artistic decisions in the development of the libretto. Thomas S Hischak seeks to outline the development of Guys and Dolls as a timeless “musical fable” and comment on the reasons for its lasting success, focusing on how each song revealed new information the audience and how the plot of the show was so tightly constructed it made every element interdependent on one another to succeed. Thomas Hischak is the author of over thirty books on theatre, film, and popular music. Among his works on the musical theatre are The Oxford Companion to the American Musical; The Rodgers and Hammerstein Encyclopedia; Word Crazy: Broadway Lyricists; The Jerome Kern Encyclopedia; The Mikado to Matilda: The British Musical on the New York Stage; and Musical Misfires: Three Decades of Broadway Musical Heartbreak (with Mark A. Robinson). He is Emeritus Professor of Theatre at the State University of New York at Cortland and a Fulbright scholar who has taught and directed in Greece, Lithuania, and Turkey. “I just love the warmth of being in a cabaret. It's my favorite place to be next to a Broadway theatre. Maybe more so because you get food.” Multi-hyphenates don't always start as actors. Theatre multi-hyphenates find their way through multiple avenues and for Christine Pedi, The Lady of 1000 Voices, it started when she stumbled upon the radio station when she attended Fordham University studying communications. After focusing on a radio career, she started in community theatre, eventually landing her turn at Forbidden Broadway. Then through a connection from Fordham, she was asked to interview at SiriusXM Radio. And now – Pedi is one of the pillars of our community connecting listeners of the radio to the insight of Broadway. Post pandemic, Pedi is also continuing her in person cabaret acts, with a massively funny new show at The Green Room 42, called The Pedi Party, which had a wonderfully successful first show on January. She will be appearing at TGR42 on February 20th and March 31st both at 9:30pm. In this amazing episode, Pedi lets us in to great stories regarding Howard Stern, Joan Rivers, while dissecting the changes and fads of cabaret and sketch comedy, such as how it's moved from live performance to YouTube, and what forms a successful cabaret – or the “Drop Your Pants and Go” mentality. Pedi is also open about losing her eyesight over the years and shares what that means regarding performance and work opportunities. We also discuss the importance of taking care of yourself, a sense of belonging, and hustle. “A lot of people your age don't think about taking care of themselves until they are my age and then you got a lot of catching up to do. But to be forced to really address things now will probably serve you better and probably save you aggravation on other fronts.” Christine the “Lady of 1000 Voices" first discovered her talent for multiple personalities (Merman, Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters etc) through her long association with the legendary off Broadway revue FORBIDDEN BROADWAY. She received a Drama Desk nomination for her work in FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD (Liza, Rosie Perez, Judi Dench, Sharon Stone etc) as well as an LA Ovation & NAACP Award. She also brought her collection of Divas to off B'ways long running NEWSICAL the Musical and recently starred in and co-produced SPAMILTON: An American Parody written by Forbidden Broadway's creator Gerard Allessandrini. Broadway: Mama Morton (yes just one character...all night) in the 2nd longest running musical of all time CHICAGO, LITTLE ME with Martin Short & Faith Prince, directed by Rob Marshall, and opposite Liev Schreiber in Eric Bogosians TALK RADIO directed by Robert Falls. SIRIUS XM RADIO On Broadway host. On Saturday she and the "aMAHzing" Seth Rudetsky co-host the DUELING DIVAS. Her cabaret show GREAT DAMES has won the New York Bistro & Nitelife Awards and has played NYC, Los Angeles, London, South Africa & beyond. THERE'S NO BIZNESS LIKE SNOW BIZNESS her holiday show has been a seasonal staple in NYC since 2008. She's performed in that “cutie patootie” John McD's Cabaret Corner on the Rosie O'Donnell Show and sung in many major NYC venues & cruiseships including Birdland, Feinsteins/54 Below, The Iridium, The Metropolitan Room, The Algonquin, The Laurie Beechman, Avery Fisher Hall, Don't Tell Mamas...and the QE2...AND she's performed for President & Mrs Clinton (playing a singing HIllary!). Fans of THE SOPRANOS may recognize her as Mrs Bobby Baccala. Other TV: DR DEATH on NBC PEACOCK. It's another awe-inspiring episode from the Someone Gets Me podcast as I share the screen with China Forbes, the lead singer, and songwriter of the band Pink Martini. A gifted multi-potentialite, China's exceptional talents, coupled with her rich life experience, is truly a story worth telling (and made into a movie!) Tune in as she shares her journey of what it's like pursuing many passions, enrolling at Harvard University, where she juggled visual arts, acting and singing, and even finishing as cum laude. China's life shows us how music is a source of hope, how it takes courage to focus on giving your gifts to the world, and the importance of accepting that the good and the bad things in life don't last forever. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ A musical genius making beauty from sadness. China's unusual childhood, her mother and father, divorcing when she was five, and the many struggles after that are depicted in a movie her sister made called Infinitely Polar Bear, starring Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana. Such was the backdrop as China grew up and made it through with the help of art, music, and her eternal optimism for life. ✔️ She is releasing the song "Rise," which she wrote for her Pink Martini bandmate, Derek Rieth. "I just felt like my words did not succeed in helping him, but I felt that they could help someone else who was struggling with suicidal thoughts. I've been sitting on it for six years, but it's now coming out; I do believe that this song will help many people." ✔️ There is still more to be done by the singing sensation, and she has this to say to fellow creatives: "You need not care what anyone thinks. It would be best if you dedicated time every day to do your craft. Trust that no one else is you and don't compare yourself to others, and you need to get the focus off of yourself because self-consciousness is paralyzing. Ask yourself, how do I give my gifts to the world?" ✔️ China recently co-written Pink Martini's two latest hits, including "The Lemonade Song," approaching 2 million streams on Spotify alone. This soaring anthem of orchestral pop, written on either side of a breakup, celebrates the strength we all have to persevere and survive and learn to love our lives. It describes each individual's Full Circle: the power each of us has to steer our lives in the direction we want to go, a direction that will end up back where we started, but as a different person each time we come around. China Forbes was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she graduated cum laude from Harvard and was awarded the Jonathan Levy Prize for acting. She appeared in New York regional theatre and Off-Broadway productions, earning her Equity card alongside future stars of stage and screen such as Norm Lewis, Peter Jacobson, and Rainn Wilson. Soon after college China formed and sang with her first band. They regularly performed at NYC clubs CBGB's Gallery, Mercury Lounge, and Brownies. Her first solo album Love Handle was released in 1995, and she was chosen to sing "Ordinary Girl," the theme song to the TV show Clueless. In 1995, she was plucked from New York City by Harvard classmate Thomas Lauderdale to sing with Pink Martini. She has written many of Pink Martini's most beloved songs with Lauderdale, including "Sympathique," "Lilly," "Clementine," "Let's Never Stop Falling in Love," "Over the Valley," and "A Snowglobe Christmas," which can be heard on Pink Martini's holiday album Joy to the World. Her original song "Hey Eugene" is the title track of Pink Martini's third album, and many of her songs can also be heard on television and in film. She sang "Qué Será Será" over the opening and closing credits of Jane Campion's film In the Cut. Her original song "The Northern Line" appears at the end of sister Maya Forbes' directorial debut Infinitely Polar Bear, released in 2015 by Sony Pictures Classics. With Pink Martini, Forbes has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Later with Jools Holland. She has performed songs in over twenty languages. China has sung duets with Michael Feinstein, Jimmy Scott, Georges Moustaki, Henri Salvador, Saori Yuki, Faith Prince, Carol Channing, and Rufus Wainwright, among others. She has performed in venues from Carnegie Hall to Red Rocks, the Sydney Opera House to the Grand Rex in Paris. She released her second solo album '78 on Heinz Records in 2008, a collection of autobiographical folk-rock songs. She has recently co-written Pink Martini's two latest hits, including "The Lemonade Song," approaching 2 million streams on Spotify. Reviews of Dear Christmas and Merry Liddle Christmas Wedding, both from Lifetime. Some special guests join me for the Merry Liddle Christmas Wedding review! Synopses: Dear Christmas (Lifetime): Natalie Morgan (Melissa Joan Hart) is the host of a popular podcast, Holiday Love, which shares true stories of holiday romance with its listeners. While the outside world and her listeners everywhere see Natalie is an expert on romance, she’s never truly experienced a romance of her own. As Natalie prepares to embark on a promotional tour for her new book, she stops back home to spend Christmas with her family where she unexpectedly begins to experience her own holiday romance as sparks ignite with local firefighter, Chris (Jason Priestley). Dear Christmas also stars Robin Givens, Ed Begley Jr. & Faith Prince and includes cameos by Jamie and Doug Hehner (Married at First Sight: Couples Cam) and Hilarie Burton and Antwon Tanner (One Tree Hill). Merry Liddle Christmas Wedding (Lifetime): Lifetime’s first-ever Christmas sequel to last year’s hit movie, Merry Liddle Christmas, Merry Liddle Christmas Wedding once again follows Jacquie Liddle (Kelly Rowland), as she and Tyler (Thomas Cadrot) try to plan their perfect destination Christmas wedding. Naturally, Jacquie’s plans go awry when her boisterous family intervenes in her planning and her snooty wedding planner quits in protest. While nothing goes as initially planned, Jacquie and Tyler get a Christmas wedding more memorable than they could have ever dreamed.

That’s not worthy of you.’ Suddenly I went from being a character actress to being a leading lady. And it took me about five years to shake all that and go back to my old self and start picking things that I liked and wanted to do.” FAITH PRINCE starred as Miss Adelaide opposite Nathan Lane in the 1992 Broadway revival of “Guys and Dolls.” FAITH PRINCE won the 1992 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her performance in "Guys and Dolls." With its suggestive exclamation point, the title of the new Broadway musical Disaster! hints at the campy, over-the-top qualities it brings to the Nederlander Theatre. Set on a cruise ship precariously moored along the Hudson River, the show spoofs disaster movies such as The Poseidon Adventure and Earthquake that were popular in the 1970s. It also features a number of disco hits and pop songs of the era. Written by Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick, the production has assembled a cast of well-known Broadway names: Faith Prince, Roger Bart, Adam Pascal and Kerry Butler, among them. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood has experienced this Disaster! first-hand and weighs in on its less-than calamitous results.
Michael Schultz's The Last Dragon is the story of Leroy Green (Taimak), a young man on a quest to find wisdom who's beset by gangsters and the Shogun of Harlem.
