Donald Trump strongly feels that U.S. security alliances in Europe no longer serve Washington's long-term interest. In his view, the U.S. is being "ripped off" by wealthy countries that can afford to pay for their protection but choose to rely on the United States instead. He also says much the same thing about the U.S. military presence in Japan and South Korea. Curiously, though, the Philippines is different. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recently visited Manila and reaffirmed Washigton's "ironclad" commitment to protect the Southeast Asian country against "China's aggression." Ray Powell, director of the Sealight initiative at Stanford University's Gordian Knott Center for National Security Innovation and host of the "Why Should We Care About the Indo-Pacific Podcast," joins Eric and CGSP Southeast Asia Editor Edwin Shri Bimo to discuss why the national security team in Washington remains appears to be more committed to the Philippines than other alliance partners. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Billy Stritch, Renowned Music Director, Vocalist & Pianist About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Billy Stritch, is a renowned composer, arranger, vocalist, and pianist extraordinaire who is both a highly sought-after music director and a star performer in his own right.   For 25 years he worked closely with Liza Minnelli as her music director, collaborator and accompanist.  He's also been the music director and arranger for many other great stars including Tony Bennett, Marilyn Maye, Linda Lavin, Linda Eder, Ann Hampton Callaway, and Christine Ebersole.    In addition, he's a wonderful songwriter.  He co-wrote the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning, number 1 hit song “Does He Love You” recorded in 1993 by Reba McEntire and Linda Davis.    As a solo entertainer, he performs sell-out shows in concert halls and nightclubs across the country, including his highly acclaimed tribute shows to Mel Tormé and Cy Coleman, as well as his spectacular show with Jim Caruso called “The Sinatra Century”.  During the pandemic, he was one of the first artists to start performing online, creating his own weekly live-stream show called “Billy's Place”, celebrating the Great American Songbook with songs and stories from his amazing career.    He's recorded numerous albums, and some of my favourites are “Jazz Live”, “Waters of March”, “Billy Stritch Sings Mel Tormé”, “The Sunday Set: Recorded Live at Birdland”, “Christmas at Birdland”, and “Billy's Place”, which is a collection of his favorite songs from those online shows I just mentioned.  He's also been prominently featured on at least a dozen other albums by music artists like Christine Ebersole, Jim Caruso, Benny Carter, Klea Blackhurst, and many more.   And if all that weren't enough, our guest is also a Broadway star.   He played the role of “Oscar” in the Tony Award winning 2001 Broadway revival of “42nd Street”.  And when he's not on tour, he can often be found dazzling New York audiences on Sunday nights at Bemelman's Bar at the Carlyle, and of course, every Monday night at Birdland, for Jim Caruso's Cast Party. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Billy Stritch, go to:http://billystritch.com/https://www.facebook.com/billystritchpro/https://www.instagram.com/billystritch/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPKEPvjXbWy_RQALL8KiLPghttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5BFCEjtWiORUGo96eKDbXi?autoplay=true #BillyStritch   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Jim Caruso and Billy Stritch's friendship began almost 40 years ago, way before they ever set foot in New York City. Jim was living and performing in Dallas, Texas, when his manager asked if a young vocal trio from Houston could sing a few songs before one of his shows. That trio was Sharon Montgomery, Rebecca Plant, and Billy Stritch. Jim thought “Oh sure, give these kids a break.” Their performance blew everyone away, including Jim, who said “They were one of the best vocal groups I'd ever heard, I wanted to kill myself. In lieu of that, we became best friends.” Now, Jim and Billy spend every Monday night together at the Birdland Theater in New York hosting “Jim Caruso's Cast Party” — one of the best open mics in the city. Every week for 18 years they've brought people on stage to share their talents with the audience. The best part? You never know who might walk in the door But you can't make it to New York to hang out with Jim and Billy, you can bring them into your home every day with their album The Sunday Set. It opens up with a sunny medley of “Whistle While You Work” and “Give a Little Whistle,” and is followed by a 60s swingin' arrangement of “You Are My Sunshine.” You'll be laughing while they sing “What Did You Do To Your Face?” and grabbing for a beer during their “Sinatra Saloon Medley” Listen to the full interview with Jim Caruso and Billy Stritch to hear all the details of their newest album, The Sunday Set. They laugh about the crazy adventures of hosting an open mic night, explain how their album came together, and describe the process of arranging tunes for The Sunday Set. Happy Birthday Billy!! Billy Stritch is one of the premier singer-pianists on the New York and national jazz and cabaret scenes. He began his career in Houston, Texas, where he formed the vocal trio Montgomery, Plant and Stritch. The trio performed all over New York and Europe from 1983 until they disbanded in 1990. A chance meeting with Liza Minnelli in March of 1991 resulted in her asking him to create vocal arrangements for the record-breaking extravaganza Liza Stepping Out at Radio City Music Hall. In addition to his 25-year collaboration with Liza, Billy recently toured with the legendary Tony Bennett as Tony’s pianist and musical director. A solo entertainer in his own right, he has performed his own shows (including tributes to Mel Tormé and Cy Coleman) in concert halls and nightclubs across the country. Billy also serves as music director for such leading vocalists as Linda Lavin, Christine Ebersole, Paulo Szot and Marilyn Maye. He is the co-writer of the Grammy-winning song “Does He Love You” recorded by Reba McEntire and Linda Davis. When he’s not on the road, he is the pianist for Jim Caruso’s Cast Party open mic night every Monday at New York’s legendary Birdland Jazz Club and he and Jim hold forth on Sunday nights at Bemelmans’ Bar in Manhattan’s fabled Carlyle Hotel. Currently during Covid-19, he is hosting his own weekly Facebook live-stream show “Billy’s Place”, celebrating the Great American Songbook with songs and stories from his varied career. The show airs every Thursday evening at 8:00 pm EDT on his BILLY STRITCH Facebook page. Faced with the possibility of having to close permanently due to the pandemic, voices were raised, and money flowed in, helping to raise Birdland - like the mythical Phoenix - from the ashes to fly again. We catch up with club owner, Gianni Valenti, and booking agent, Jim Caruso, about how the event came to be, and what it means for the future.

From Wall Street to Wicked. Broadway star Jessica Vosk has one of the craziest stories out there, showing the world that it's never too late to follow your dream. Wicked, Fiddler on the Roof, The Bridges of Madison County, and Finding Neverland to name a few. Jessica Vosk is hilarious and insightful and we are thrilled that she took the time to chat with us. We recorded this on inauguration day so we recap all the good of January 20th. Gaga's choice of key, Garth Brooks phrasing, J-Lo being SO warmed up. We recap one of the best days EVER. This week we talk with Jessica about starting off a career in finance with a padded 401k and jumping ship to be Elphaba. Do you know the story about Greta Garbo at sitting at the soda fountain?? That was Jessica Vosk singing at Bridland on Monday night's with Jim Caruso. She then met Alex Gemignani and the rest was history. Well.. not really... it took a long time and a lot of work, but Jessica made it to Broadway and she's been rocking ever since. Dan and her are now real estate agents as well, so if you're looking for homes in Jersey or Westchester... be sure to give these belters a call. Learn more about your ad choices. Would that be a good idea? Most rich people became prosperous by creating wealth. Jim Caruso took over a bankrupt brewery and turned it around by inventing creative craft beers. He now employs more than 100 people. The company he runs, Flying Dog Brewery, is worth millions. Caruso had a good answer when John Stossel asked him about the "unfairness" of some Americans having so much more money than others. The top fraction of earners does now own almost half America's assets. Caruso pointed out that Steve Jobs was worth $10 billion when he died, but since Apple sold more than 2 billion devices, Jobs collected just $5 per device. "I think Steve might have been underpaid here," he says. Most on the left don't see it that way. "The feeling tends to be that somebody like Steve Jobs took something away from everybody else," Caruso says. "But... what did Steve Jobs take? He had this idea, wouldn't it be great to have a thousand songs in your pocket... one of the most massively important tools for productivity and communication in life." Stossel says Jobs, and all entrepreneurs (if they don't partner with, or freeload off government) create more wealth than they take.  Free Speech for Allhttps://youtu.be/1BU3New0goc John StosselPeople complain that social media companies like Facebook and Twitter often ban good content. ---- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 - --- What’s the solution? Create a platform that doesn’t ban anything! One such platform is called LBRY. I first covered LBRY two years ago after they rescued 20,000 college lectures that Berkeley had hidden from the public. Berkeley once made those videos freely available to everyone, but then the government declared that it's illegal to post videos without close-captions for the hearing impaired. Berkeley didn’t want to spend millions of dollars to pay people to add the captions, so it simply pulled them off their website. Now deaf people weren’t disadvantaged because NOBODY could watch them. Except, entrepreneur Jeremy Kauffman had fortunately already copied them all to his platform, LBRY. Now anyone can watch them—for free. I’m glad that LBRY exists. It gives everyone a chance to watch everything. A Taste of Homeschooling.https://youtu.be/kez87jw_2QMJohn StosselThe coronavirus pandemic is giving millions of parents a taste of homeschooling. ---- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 ---- While kids are home now, what most are doing is not entirely “homeschooling.” Most parents just “assist” their kids’ former teachers, who now hold "Zoom” classes. But teachers struggle to keep students engaged remotely. Some teachers don't even use online videoconferencing. In Los Angeles, the teachers union even negotiated a contract that says teachers are not required to use it. So, as media outlets put it, there are now "parents and guardians forced into full-time homeschooling." Being out of school, they say, will “will set back a generation of children.” Bunk. Media outlets make it sound awful, but the reality is that homeschooled kids -- despite being from poorer families, on average, do better on tests. They also do better in college, and they are less likely to drink or do drugs. Here are the studies on it: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/... Homeschooling is also easier than ever, with new technology offering amazing new options for learning at home. Just a tune today, another instrumental sketch. It's been a slow week for me out in public. (Hell, it's been a slow year or a slow several years!)[photo by kk]I don't perform much lately, but last Wednesday I joined my friend Jim Caruso and played a song at his open mic event, Cast Party. It's mostly Broadway show tunes but I can blend in everywhere, oddball that I am. I did my cover song (50 Ways To Leave Your Lover), accompanied on piano by the guy who also plays piano and directs for Tony Bennett and Liza Minelli.I got to touch the sound in public, briefly once again and as usual it was all over too quickly.(Same is true if I play for 90 minutes or 4 hours, btw.)Why so little performing these days, Trev?I've been re-calibrating my life after experiencing severe burnout on the road. I've invested in my mental health, re-evaluated some of my relationships and done what I could to become a better steward of my own sound.Never did I ever imagine I'd go so long without performing, but here we are.The world has been changing so much, but I am a witness to the power of music every day and I can see how people need it.Music helps us make sense of our lives. It helps us inhabit our own bodies and connect with those around us. We all have to do it in our own way, but when we do it right a connection opens to a power much greater than ourselves. It's given to us so that we can give it out further. So I give this to you.(Press play)Love to your ears,Trevor...If you like my stuff, help it spread by sharing it!Listen to songs: Hear the “Trevor Exter Playlist” on SpotifyHang with players! An award-winning composer, arranger, vocalist, and jazz pianist of extraordinary range and sophistication, BILLY STRITCH breathes new life into the Great American Songbook, all the while bringing an easy sense of humor and showmanship to his performances.Born and raised in Sugar Land, Texas, Billy Stritch got his start at age 12, playing piano at his neighborhood First Presbyterian Church. Word spread about the child prodigy, and the local country club hired him for a four-year weekly gig in the piano bar. The dreaded requests came in droves, prompting Billy to rush home and learn all the requisite standards, which would subsequently fill his tip bowl! Inspiration came from jazz greats like Oscar Peterson and George Shearing, but his older sister’s love for Elton John and Billy Joel opened up a new world of pop music which informs his playing to this day. After being turned on to singers like Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, Mark Murphy and Carmen McRae, Stritch started to find his own voice to use in conjunction with the piano mastery.Billy Stritch has collaborated with a diverse group of artists including Liza Minnelli, Jim Caruso, Marvin Hamlisch, Michael Feinstein, Mel Torme, Carol Channing, Natalie Cole and currently Tony Bennett.

Jonathan Slavin was born on a marine base in North Carolina, and grew up in rural Pennsylvania. A bit of a shy weirdo to his peers, he found his voice when he was cast in his first play. After high school, he landed in New York and performed in some truly abysmal theater, before being cast to play the sexually confused protagonist in “The Best of Schools” at Ubu Rep. From there, he moved to Lincoln Center and then Broadway in Wendy Wasserstein’s “The Sisters Rosensweig”, to Dallas to do “Six Degrees of Separation”(a production that was visited and subsequently cited by the Dalllas Vice Squad), and finally to Los Angeles, to appear in the West Coast premiere of Larry Kramer’s “The Destiny of Me.” After a few months playing a string of “insert occupation here” Guy television guest stars(Flower Delivery Guy, Fish and Chips Guy, Computer Tech Guy) Slavin graduated to more memorable roles. He has appeared as a series regular on Better Off Ted, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Mission Control, Union Square, and voiced Ogo, a neurotic and slightly deranged robot on the cartoon Robot and Monster. He has recurred on Better With You, Family Tools, and My Name is Earl, to name a few. Recent and notable guest stars include Legit, Suburgatory, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Weeds, The Glades, and Perception. His feature film credits include Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, Dirty Girl, Hard Pill, and My Mother’s Hairdo. As a gay man, he is equally committed to LGBT rights, and has twice participated in the California Aids Ride, a nearly 600 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, raising funds for HIV services provided by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. ______________________________________ The Boyz talk with the new Associate Director for American Diabetes Association in Central Washington, Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho Julie Lockhart. Jim Caruso from NYC's "Cast Party" joins Candi and Randy to talk about bringing the best party in town to Las Vegas at the Smith Center's Cabaret Jazz. Jim Caruso’s "Cast Party" is a wildly popular weekly soiree that brings a sprinkling of Broadway glitz and urbane wit to the legendary Birdland in New York City every Monday night since 2003.  It’s been the ultimate spot to mix and mingle with Manhattan show folk and their fans.  It’s a cool cabaret night-out enlivened by a hilariously impromptu variety show. Showbiz superstars hit the stage alongside up-and-comers, serving up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle. Caruso guides the entire affair like a bubbly cruise director, musical director Billy Stritch holds court at the ivories and the audience is invited to participate in the festivities!  Cast Party has been honored with two BroadwayWorld Awards, a MAC Award, Bistro Award and a Nightlife Award. It’s the party that would happen if somehow David Letterman and Ed Sullivan threw a hip house party around a nine-foot concert grand piano! Don't miss Jim and Billy in Las Vegas on October 9th at Caberet Jazz at the Smith Center at 9:30pm
