In the recognition and celebration of the end of the pandemic which is now 100% over, we have decided to dedicate this episode to the brave men, women, and others, who have selflessly given their time to vanquish this vicious virus under the leadership and guidance of our undaunted, unflappable president—Kate Shindle. This week we bring to you: Episode 27: You guys. We did it. The coronavirus is over. No really, it’s over. Nothing more to see or even talk about, thank goodness. Just another paragraph in the annals of history and at least 47 pages of line items in the Actor’s Equity handbook. We speak to a real physician, Dr. Linda Dahl, who knows about real science to empirically confirm our real statement that the coronavirus is now nothing more than a distant memory. What the critics are saying: “The scariest thing about this episode is that I know he’s going to make another one” -Ben Brantley “The worst abomination in front of G-d and country I have heard of in my lifetime” -DC Episcopal Bishop, St. John’s Church “I’d fuck Nate harder than the electorate” -Kayleigh McEnany Written by: Nate Patten and Cam Collins Produced by: Justin Brown Logo by: www.performingpixel.com @bookeditpodcast https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcvh4H7ff3rQ0MI-OO04OEQ www.bookedit.net

There is a 6th dimension beyond that which is known to man and that which is only known to Kate Shindle. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as Shetler Studios. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between costume and dance belt, between Schnippers and Ripley Grier. It lies between the pit of man's fears and the paragon of his Broadway Bares donation page. This is the dimension of the fright of theatre. It is an area which we call... #BOOkedIt. We apologize for our month long absence, we mistakenly signed on with the producers of ‘Bat of Out Hell’, but like a Broadway revival of ‘The Glass Menagerie’, we’re back. We’ve been living in a tent on Kate Shindle’s lawn protesting ‘Gypsy of the Year’ and starting a MoveOn.org campaign to raise money for ‘Head Over Heels’. We are pleased to announce our return episode... ‘Broadway is Broken and I Alone Can Fix It’ Featuring Native American Guest Elizabeth Warren, for approximately 1/64th of the episode Produced by Cam Collins Logo by performingpixel.com Recorded by Tom Jorgensen
The new musical "The Sting," now entering its last weekend at Paper Mill Playhouse, was pretty much totally sold out before it even opened. A musical adaptation of the classic, Oscar-winning film of the same name starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, this new version stars Harry Connick, Jr., J. Harrison Ghee and Kate Shindle – to name a few. Theater-goers know Ghee from his inimitable performance as the drag queen hero Lola of the Tony Award-winning "Kinky Boots," and they know Shindle from Broadway productions of "Jekyll & Hyde," "Cabaret," "Wonderland" and the national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical "Fun Home." We spoke with both of them earlier this week as they were preparing for their final performances of this smash-hit run at Paper Mill.

Gary and Roscoe romp through a medley of miscellany, joined unexpectedly by friend-of-the-show Paul Stroili of Episode 43 fame. Paul was loitering outside an Edible Arrangements franchise near our studio, shamelessly advertising for his new hit Chicago show Tony n' Tina's Wedding. So Gary invited him in for a visit and a chat on the air. More about Edible Arrangements than you ever wanted to know... Roscoe reviews The Scivvies for our listeners - singer/actor/musicians Nick Cearly and Lauren Molina from New York, who perform in their underwear stripped down arrangements of eclectic covers and eccentric originals. Roscoe "charms" other patrons seated near him at the event, which featured guest appearances by musical artists from Hamilton and Wonderful Town. Roscoe's informed notice? Two big thumbs up! Gary finally sees Wonderful Town at the Goodman Theatre before closing and his take concurs with Roscoe's - a brilliant re-imagining that simply shows what a theatrical genius like Mary Zimmerman and a stellar cast can do with somewhat mediocre musical material. Marvelous performances all, especially by leads Bri Sudia and the aforementioned Lauren Molina. Bri Sudia gives a performance that Gary imagines is reminiscent of a young Fanny Brice or Ethel Merman in her heyday. We can't avoid discussing the unanimous stellar reviews that Paul and his production of Tony n' Tina's Wedding have received in all the Chicago media. The acting, the direction, the venue, the music and the original 1980's theme make this one of the must-see events in the city this season. Despite the Chicago Cubs' World Series run diverting audiences to their TV sets this October, T n' T is playing to large and repeat crowds, offering an actual church wedding ceremony, an interactive reception, loads of great 80's music, full Italian dinner, champagne toast and real wedding cake. Paul discusses the extraordinary work by the cast and their dedication to naturalism and honest improvisation. Go to www.tonylovestina.com for information and to order tickets. Hurry, though, as it only runs through January 14, 2017. Another shout out from Roscoe and Gary about their experience at the famous iO Theatre improvisation space, where they saw the Improvised Shakespeare Company. Smart, funny, sophisticated, inspiring and downright thrilling, this troupe of actors and improvisers create a full 2-hour Shakespearean-style play with just a single suggested title from the audience. Ours was called "Without Handlebars" and was hilarious from start to finish. From mistaken identities to rhyming couplets, from iambic pentameter to mismatched lovers, you'll swear you're watching a fully written and prepared script. But NO! It's being made up on the spot for the first - and last - time ever! This is the perfect date night event, and it's only $16. Worth at least twice that. Enough gushing....GO! Gary, Roscoe and Paul bandy about Broadway's The Cherry Orchard reviews, George Bernard Shaw, War Paint and actress Kate Shindle, appearing in the national tour of Fun Home. Then we revisit Roscoe's grandfather's scrapbooks in our new recurring segment, Remembering Roscoe. And have you heard about the Ruby Slippers at the Smithsonian Institution? Their home for nearly 40 years, the slippers are in dire need of repair and refurbishment. The Smithsonian is trying to raise $300,000 through a Kickstarter campaign for the year-long task. Seems to us like a lot of money...They're a mismatched pair but evidence proves that they were indeed worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz. As of this recording, the Smithsonian was over half way to their monetary goal with nearly a month left to go, so it's safe to say they will achieve the necessary amount and we can look forward to seeing a pristine pair of Ruby Slippers on display in the not too distant future. Paul relates a story of finding a pair of shoes, with the heel designed like the Ferris Wheel at the 1893 World Columbian Exhibiti...

(My favorite people in this industry are complacency crushers like Kate.) You’ll also hear . . . How being Miss America was an asset and a liability for her acting career. The hardest part about being a working actor in New York City. What’s going on with the minimum wage situation in LA . . . and why she can’t say too much about it. Kate Shindle weaves an engrossing memoir of her year as Miss America 1998 with a fascinating, insightful history of the pageant to reveal why confident, ambitious young women still compete in a beauty contest that struggles to remain culturally relevant.
Special Episode #6: Kate Shindle may have come to our attention first as Miss America 1998, but she has clearly staked out a place of her own in the musical theatre world. She's appeared on Broadway in Jekyll and Hide, headlined as Sally Bowles in the Sam Mendes/Rob Marshall revival of Cabaret, and originated the role of Vivienne in Legally Blonde, the musical.Kate was always on my radar because a) she's a fellow Northwestern University alum, and b) she was a super cool Miss A., in that she was really talented and she had a great platform (AIDS awareness and education). So when I was asked to write a song for a benefit and I heard Kate was one of the singers I could write for, I snapped her up PDQ! It's great to finally work with her after years of rubbing elbows at Northwestern events and Julia Murney's annual Pancakes and Bacon Party. The benefit, called Broadway in South Africa, will take place on October 6th at Symphony Space. Ten songwriters (including Henry Krieger, Michael John LaChiusa and Bill Russell) were asked to write songs inspired by the essays and drawings of South African children. I took my inspiration from Khensoni Mabaso's sketch of Johannesburg, which features a very tall building with the word "Voda" on top. This piqued my curiousity, so off I went to research what turned out to be the Ponte City Tower, a 54-story cylindrically-shaped apartment building with a hollow core. ("Voda" is short for Vodacom, a cellular phone company that owns a huge LED wraparound sign on the top three stories of the building.)When Ponte was built in 1975, the surrounding neighborhoods were "whites only," but with the end of Apartheid, the area quickly filled with blacks and immigrants, and the white people fled to the suburbs. The building became notorious for criminal activity, suicide jumpers, and the garbage that built up inside the core. The building is currently being renovated and resold as high-style condos. Last October, before the sales office opened, the building co-sponsored an event with the city to offer people the opportunity to "Abseil off Ponte," i.e. rappel down the building on ropes like mountain climbers use.(Sorry to those who downloaded the original version of this episode with the audio issues. This new version is issue-free.)"The Core of Ponte" was recorded on 9/27/08.
