And it has proved to be a wonderful place to live and we're very grateful that we can be here. And just in the recent days our town has been selected as one of the best places to live in the country and one of the reasons is the wonderful Town Park. And when our grandson comes to visit from New York City one of the first things he wants to do is .. "When are we going to the park grandpa?" So today I've asked Joy Ennis, the leader and manager of the park to come in and tell us the story, and I think it will be an inspiration to all of us. On the morning of November 14th, 1943, Leonard Bernstein, the talented 25-year-old assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic, got a phone call saying he would at last be leading the respected orchestral group — in six hours, that afternoon, with no time to rehearse. The sudden thrust into the spotlight transformed Bernstein into a national celebrity. For almost five decades, the wunderkind would be at the forefront of American music, as a conductor, composer, virtuoso performer, writer, television personality and teacher. He would also help create the most important Broadway musicals of the mid-20th century — On The Town, Wonderful Town and West Side Story. These shows would not only spotlight the talents of its young creator. They would also spotlight the romance and rhythm of New York City.Bernstein is one of New York's most influential cultural figures. Bernstein was also a critical figure in the modern revival of the music of Gustav Mahler, in whose music he was most passionately interested. A skilled pianist, Bernstein often conducted piano concertos from the keyboard. He was the first conductor to share and explore classical music on television with a mass audience through dozens of national and international broadcasts, including Young People's Concerts with the New York Philharmonic. A lifelong humanitarian, Bernstein worked in support of civil rights, protested against the Vietnam War, advocated nuclear disarmament, raised money for HIV/AIDS research and awareness, and engaged in multiple international initiatives for human rights and world peace. He conducted Mahler's Resurrection Symphony to mark the death of president John F. Kennedy, and in Israel at a world famous concert, Hatikvah on Mt. Scopus, after the Six-Day War. The sequence of events was preserved for posterity in a documentary entitled Journey to Jerusalem. At the end of his life, Bernstein conducted a historic performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in Berlin to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:04 UTC on Thursday, 21 December 2023.For the full current version of the article, see Leonard Bernstein on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Kendra Standard.

San Miguelito (Antigonon leptopus) is quite the Mexican native plant. I read that it's found in habitat not only in Sonora and Chihuahua and southward, but also Baja California. Unfortunately, where this tough Mexican vine has been introduced as an ornamental in more mesic areas like the southeastern US, it has become an invasive varmint. Sad, but true, so don't go sending seed back to friends in Florida. They already have some. And finally; this episode of Growing Native is a tribute to Tucson and the surrounding wild landscape. It's where I first cut my teeth on native plants and animals and I've been on a marvelous journey ever since. The photo of the flowering San Miguelito is not mine, but stolen from Spadefoot Nursery's website, so a thank you to them.

On the Town, Pete Malinverni Plays Leonard Bernstein. Hey kids, I know it seems like we've been gone for the Last Five Years, but we're back! And the hills are alive with the sound of a brand new QueerAnon.  We've got the Wicked talented Randy Harrison!! We kick things off with this week's Bottom Five. We're talking DaBaby, Matt Damon and all the other Guys and Dolls who are having a hard knock life this week cause they can't say no when it comes to being stupid Damn Yankees all the time. Then we drive down Avenue Q for another stupid quiz called SchmigaDO. This one's a doozy for Randy, but he had it coming. Then, for this week's Pop Culture Moment, we have a Wild Party and chat about the new AppleTV Plus series, Schmigadoon! That's right, we're easing on down the road to that titular Wonderful Town to dish on what it looks like when SNL folk take on old school musical theater. (Hint: S'Wonderful). And with that as our guide we Journey to the Past for our Deep Dive and look at the good-old fashioned classic American musical. What are its Follies? Is life a Cabaret? And how do we feel about straight forms of masculinity being reenforced in a stereotypically gay genre?  As always, we end with our ConsQUEERacies: Randy realizes a certain Actor's Union might be full of Nunsense, while Jordan has an epiphany about the Company of Netflix therapy while he's in Australia. The truth is here (pop), the truth is queer (six), and she wants to know how many bullets are left in this gun, Chino!!!!

Tyler Perry's hit drama The Haves and the Have Nots which chronicles the scandalous lives of the Cryer, Harrington and Young families living in Savannah, Georgia, will conclude after eight seasons and 196 episodes. Final episodes of the series (which has been 2021's most-watched cable series among African American women) begin airing June 1 on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. In the final season, Judge Jim Cryer (John Schneider) and his wealthy friends find out what happens when personal flaws go unchecked. Just like a true-to-life Greek tragedy, Karma has not been kind to the elite one-percenters. Dubbed the Ice Queen of primetime television, Angela Robinson has been praised by critics and fans for her portrayal of the cruel and cold-hearted Veronica Harrington. Known for her precise, controlled performances and award-winning performances in television and theatre, Robinson is the recipient of various accolades, including the Gracie Awards for Outstanding Female Actor. She made a name for herself on and off Broadway and on stages throughout the US and abroad including starring roles in The Color Purple, Wonderful Town and Bells Are Ringing.
