Ali Stroker is a trailblazing actor and advocate who joined the Little Kids, Big Hearts podcast as a guest Qook-a-lacka on our episode focused on inclusion. Today, Ali is back — out of character, as her amazing self — to talk with LKBH Host Todd Loyd about her own experiences with disability and inclusion. ❤️ She reflects on what Scarlett and Zach said on the episode: "When I hear Scarlett talking about horseback riding: It felt like she was explaining something that was so normal. And that, to me, is progress."❤️ She shares her own personal motto — Turning Limitations into Opportunities: "It can apply to somebody with a disability or not because as human beings, we have limitations. It's part of existing in the world." ❤️ She talks about being a mom with a disability — and how being a mom in a wheelchair affects her parenting and her son's independence. ❤️ She talks about the power of "inclusive playgrounds." "I never had one inclusive playground growing up, and to this day, I still go to the playground and I have this like funny feeling in my stomach because it was a place of confusion and shame and frustration for me as a child ... Every kid deserves that freedom and that ability to play in an outdoor space with their friends."❤️ She talks about a moment when she was in 1st grade and her PE teachers included her in a lesson on "how to skip," which changed her life. "Thirty-one years later, I still remember it because it felt like I was included and someone had taken a little bit of time to get creative and make me feel like I was learning a new school too, and that I could be a part of the group in moving...And that meant everything to me, everything!" ❤️ She talked about her children's book "Ali and the Sea Stars," which was based on her own experience as a six year old being introduced to musical theater by her neighbor on the Jersey Shore. "It basically set my entire life journey of becoming a musical theater and actress and everything that I do now." ❤️ She shares advice for kids with disabilities who want to try something new that hasn't been done before. Ali Stroker is a Tony Award winner for her role as ‘Ado Annie' in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! She made history as the first actor in a wheelchair to appear on Broadway in Deaf West's acclaimed revival of Spring Awakening and the first actor in a wheelchair to win a Tony. She was a series regular on the Netflix series, Echoes, and starred in the Lifetime holiday film, Christmas Ever After. Ali recurred in the final season of Netflix's Ozark and in Hulu's Only Murders in the Building. She co-wrote the novel, The Chance to Fly and its sequel, Cut Loose!; and she wrote the children's book, Ali and the Sea Stars. She was recently seen opposite Matthew Broderick in Babbitt at Shakespeare Theatre Company in DC and played 'Lady Anne' in the Shakespeare in the Park production of Richard III. She's performed her one woman show all over the country. Her mission to improve the lives of others through the arts is captured in her motto: “Turning Your Limitations Into Your Opportunities.”Learn more on our episode webpage: https://playsparkler.org/inclusion/Watch on our Youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@LittleKidsBigHearts

On this kidventure episode, two kids — Scarlett and Zach — talk about their disabilities and share their experiences with inclusion (on inclusive playgrounds and in other contexts). As Scarlett explains, inclusion "means that everybody can play, no matter your disability or how you walk or how you roll or anything like that."After a chat on Earth, the kids and Todd travel on the colors of the rainbow to the Land of Qook-a-lackas, where they meet a Qook-a-lacka friend, Quinnly, who is trying to figure out how the Qook-a-lackas and their new neighbors, the Link-a-doos, can play TOGETHER. The Qook-a-lacka's favorite sport, Quibble, is played on the ground with a big ball — while the Link-a-doos' favorite sport, Loop-a-launch, is played in the sky with a little bouncy ball. The kids and Todd help Quinnly to brainstorm a whole new game (Quibble Launch!), which has special rules and a two tier playing field that is perfect for the new neighbors to play together!Little Kids, Big Hearts was THRILLED to be joined on this episode by guest star Ali Stroker, who plays the role of Quinnly. Today, we are bringing you a conversation celebrating Disability Pride Month, which is July. This conversation with actress and singer Ali Stroker was recorded last year, but we think it has the same resonance today. We talk to Ali about disability identity and representation in the media. We hope you enjoy the conversation. Roll the tape! Across the top 100 movies of 2019 only 2.3% of all speaking characters had a disability. What's more, the rare times we do see a character with a disability, they aren't played by someone with a disability. In fact, one study found that in the top 10 TV shows for 2018 only 12% of disabled characters were played by disabled actors. In contrast, around 133 million Americans live with visible or invisible disabilities — that's 40% of the public. To put it plainly, there's A LOT of room for improvement. Enter Ali Stroker, a singer and actress phenom who became both the first person using a wheelchair to perform on Broadway and the first person using a wheelchair to win a Tony award. Ali, in many ways, has put disability on the media map, landing roles in film, television, theater and even writing a children's book. She joins us on At Liberty to discuss the importance of the representation and celebration of disability in the entertainment industry and beyond.

When Natalie sees an audition flyer for a middle school production of Wicked, she knows she HAS to audition. But can a girl in a wheelchair ever get cast in a musical? Read this book to find out! In this episode of On Record PR, Caitlan McCafferty goes on record with lifelong disability rights advocate Judith (Judy) Heumann to discuss how business leaders can best approach creating truly inclusive work environments, including for people with disabilities. Learn More Judith (Judy) Heumann is a lifelong advocate for the rights of disabled people. She contracted polio in 1949 in Brooklyn, New York and began to use a wheelchair for her mobility. She was denied the right to attend school because she was considered a "fire hazard" at the age of five. Her parents played a strong role in fighting for her rights as a child, but Judy soon determined that she, working in collaboration with other disabled people, had to play an advocacy role due to continuous discrimination. She is now an internationally recognized leader in the disability rights community. Her memoir, authored with Kristen Joiner, of Being Heumann “Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist,” published by Beacon Press and audio recorded by Ali Stroker, who is the first wheelchair actor to perform on Broadway. Judy was featured on the Trevor Noah show. Judy is featured in Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution is a 2020 American award-winning documentary film, directed by James LeBrecht and Nicole Newnham, produced by the Obama Higher Ground Production and is available on Netflix. She also produces a podcast called The Heumann Perspective, which features a variety of members from the disability community. She has been featured in numerous documentaries including on the history of the disability rights movement, including Lives Worth Living and the Power of 504 and delivered a TED talk in the fall of 2016, “Our Fight for Disability Rights- and Why We're Not Done Yet”. Her story was also told on Comedy Central's Drunk History in early 2018, in which she was portrayed by Ali Stroker,. As Senior Fellow at the Ford Foundation (2017-2019), she wrote “Road Map for Inclusion: Changing the Face of Disability in Media”. She also currently serves on a number of non-profit boards, including the American Association of People with Disabilities, the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund, Humanity and Inclusion, as well as the Human Rights Watch board. Judy was a founding member of the Berkeley Center for Independent Living which was the first grassroots center in the United States and helped to launch the Independent Living Movement both nationally and globally. In 1983, Judy co-founded the World Institute on Disability (WID) with Ed Roberts and Joan Leon, as one of the first global disability rights organizations founded and continually led by people with disabilities that works to fully integrate people with disabilities into the communities around them via research, policy, and consulting efforts. From 1993 to 2001, Judy served in the Clinton Administration as the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services in the Department of Education. Judy then served as the World Bank's first Adviser on Disability and Development from 2002 to 2006. In this position, she led the World Bank's disability work to expand its knowledge and capability to work with governments and civil society on including disability in the global conversation. During his presidency, President Obama appointed Judy as the first Special Advisor for International Disability Rights at the U.S. Department of State, where she served from 2010-2017. Mayor Fenty of D.C. appointed her as the first Director for the Department on Disability Services, where she was responsible for the Developmental Disability Administration and the Rehabilitation Services Administration. She has been instrumental in the development and implementation of legislation, such as Section 504, the Individuals with Education Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which have been advancing the inclusion of disabled people in the US and around the world and fighting to end discrimination against all those with disabilities. In this episode, we continue our celebration of Disability Pride Month with a conversation about representation.

Reviews of Time for Us to Come Home for Christmas, Let's Meet Again on Christmas Eve, Christmas Ever After. Time for Us to Come Home for Christmas (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries): Five guests are mysteriously invited to an inn to celebrate Christmas. With the help of the owner Ben, Sarah discovers that an event from the past may connect them and change their lives forever. Starring Lacey Chabert, Stephen Huszar. Let's Meet Again on Christmas Eve (Lifetime): When college sweethearts, Corinne (Kyla Pratt) and Rob (Brooks Darnell), get opportunities on opposite sides of the world, they decide to part ways and meet again in two years on Christmas Eve to see if they are really meant to be. However, when one shows up and the other doesn’t, the fate of their romance seems to have reached the end. Many years later the two end up bumping into one another when they are both hired to help bring together a Christmas Eve wedding. With many questions left unanswered, they are about to embark on a journey filled with romance and magic, just in time for Christmas Eve. Christmas Ever After (Lifetime): Popular romance novelist Izzi Simmons (Tony® winner Ali Stroker) spends every Christmas at her favorite snowy bed & breakfast, but this year, she’s faced with an impending deadline and a severe case of writer’s block. Luckily, inspiration strikes in the unlikely form of the B&B’s new owner Matt (Daniel di Tomasso), who bears an uncanny resemblance to the handsome hero from Izzi’s novels. As both partake in the lodge’s annual itinerary of Christmas activities, Izzi’s writer’s block is cured and the first pages of her and Matt’s own love story may just be beginning.
It’s holiday time! Christmastime! And you know what that means – movies, movies, movies! With the pandemic and more stay-at-home orders in place, many of us will be at home roasting chestnuts, with popcorn and hot chocolate, watching these feel-good films. In this episode, holiday movies featuring people of color are highlighted. Gone are the days of the mostly white casts on Lifetime and Hallmark networks. After a public outcry two years or so ago, these two networks expanded their productions by featuring holiday movies with black women as lead characters - Holly Robinson Peete, the Mowry sisters, Kyla Pratt, Keisha Knight Pulliam, Kelly Rowland and the list goes on. The all-inclusive holiday movies on Lifetime also include the first film starring an Asian American Family - "Sugar and Spice" airs on Sunday, December 13. In addition to race, other first-time issues on Lifetime and Hallmark include gay themes and other abled folks. "The Christmas Setup," about a mom finding her son a man, premieres Saturday, December 12 on Lifetime. Fran Drescher stars as the mother. Hallmark’s first holiday gay movie, "The Christmas House,” debuted at the end of November. Yes, there’s progress. Lifetime broke even more ground earlier this month with "Christmas Ever After." The romantic lead was Tony award-winner Ali Stroker, who uses a wheelchair. MOVIE REVIEW Additionally in this podcast, Netflix's "A New York Christmas Wedding" is reviewed. While it doesn’t have stars (except for Chris Noth), or a well-known director (Otoja Abit) behind it, and the production could look better, WATCH THIS MOVIE! It has a lot to say about LGBTQ issues and the Catholic Church. HEAR FULL REVIEW ON PODCAST. OLDER HOLIDAY MOVIES TO WATCH Hear about them all on the podcast. There's a special mention of the film "What’s Cooking. " Released in 2000, the film's directed by Gurinder Chadha, the Indian director who gave us the hit "Bend It Like Beckham" two years later in 2002.Christmas music featured:Christmas Is Coming by MaxKoMusic | https://maxkomusic.com/Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_USPresent by Ikson | https://soundcloud.com/iksonMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comWinter Joy by Keys of Moon | https://soundcloud.com/keysofmoonMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Santa’s Tricks by Myuu | https://soundcloud.com/myuuMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported Licensehttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_USContact Underground Magnolia Podcast:Underground Magnolia website: (https://www.undergroundmagnolia.com/)Instagram: @UMPodcastDV (https://www.instagram.com/umpodcastdv/)Twitter: @UMPodcastDV (https://twitter.com/UMPodcastDV)Send questions/comments and requests to contact@undergroundmagnolia.com. Ali Stroker is a groundbreaking performer! The spinal cord injury she suffered in an automobile accident at just two years of age has not held her back for one hot second. Ali made history in 2015 as the first actress in a wheelchair to appear on Broadway, in Deaf West's revival of Spring Awakening. Then in 2019 this trailblazer notched a few more firsts, to be nominated for AND win a Tony Award (Best Featured Actress In A Musical, for Oklahoma!). Ali and I discuss, among many things: how her family (including a New Jersey Coaches Hall-Of-Fame inductee father), as well as her community of Ridgewood, NJ, rallied in support following the accident, what it means to her to be an inspiration for actors/actresses who may be "differently abled", how excited she is for "Christmas Ever After", a movie she shot in August for Lifetime, to air in December, and much more. Please join Ali and me on this week's QuadCast, thank you!

In this episode we talk about paralysis, how people with disabilities are portrayed in movies and discuss the journey of Dr. Cohen's close friend that is an advocate and champion for disability rights. **GROSS ANATOMY PODCAST IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A SUBSTITUTE FOR PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL ADVICE, DIAGNOSIS, OR TREATMENT. (00:00-09:12): Ali Stroker became the first person confined to a wheelchair to win a Tony. She expressed her gratitude for those who supported her throughout her life. Brian and Ian talk about this amazing story and think that her statements and achievements will change the way people with disabilities are viewed forever. (09:12-18:43): Ed Stetzer, who is featured frequently on this show, writes “Why young adults need mentors”. Brian and Ian touch on why they agree and explain what good mentoring is to them. What does it look like? (18:43-28:14): Matt Chandler of Village Church in Texas responded to an incident involving sexual abuse during a church retreat. Brian and Ian react as pastors and discuss how one would and should deal with these situations. Why does scandal continue to infect the church? (28:48-37:11): There is a malnutrition issue that often gets overlooked by our prosperous society. An opinion piece in the NY Times puts this issue into perspective by comparing it side-by-side with exuberantly priced food. Brian and Ian reflect on this article. Do we take our access to food for granted? (37:11-47:23): There has been an ongoing story with the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, specifically the St. Louis Blues. Superfan Laila Anderson was surprised by the Blues to fly out to Boston for game 7. Brian and Ian talk about this amazing story and the overwhelming gratitude Anderson expresses for the hospitality and inclusion of the team. (47:23-57:26): Leadership isn’t about winning, it is about bringing people with you to the finish line. Brian and Ian mull over this quote from John Maxwell and how they, as leaders, view the successes of leadership. How do you lead without winning in America? (57:26-1:07:00): In a divided world, we need to choose empathy. Brian and Ian discuss this article and the importance of understanding each other. They implore others to try and understand those who think and believe differently than you, or are going through things you otherwise cannot relate to. How do we become more empathetic? (1:07:00-1:13:19): Spoiler alert! A man can tell you how many hairs are on Thanos’ head, and your Bachelor’s in Grilling will come in handy for this job. The Tonys have all been handed out and another Broadway Season comes to a close. While the trophies themselves are the main attraction, it was really the speeches and heart of the awards ceremony this year that captivated my attention and truly moved me. I talk about some inspiring acceptance speeches from winners like Andre DeShields, Rachel Chavkin, and Ali Stroker as well as the acceptance speech Sam Mendes never gave. Then, I give some background to one of the names In Memoriam that was a first for the Tonys. Read all the speeches here and the full list of winners here. ----------- Please consider buying me a coffee to support this work that goes into each episode. This week, lawmakers in Congress are nose-deep in a page-turner: the Mueller Report. Mueller’s not talking … but Dems are hearing from some old school political junkies - like President Nixon’s former White House counsel John Dean - and trying to force other people to show up. We'll explain why. Meanwhile, California lawmakers say it’s time for a check-up. Their new budget plan would give some undocumented immigrants state health care coverage - the first state to do so. Also on today’s episode: Broadway actress Ali Stroker made history at the Tony Awards, and Starbucks is trying green on for size.
Ali Stroker (Oklahoma!) and The Prom's Beth Leavel, Brooks Ashmanskas and Caitlin Kinnunen are all nominated for 2019 Tony Awards for their performances on Broadway!
ALI STROKER has garnered a Tony nomination for her turn as Ado Annie in Daniel Fish's revival of Oklahoma! She made a historic debut in the Deaf West revival of Spring Awakening in 2015 as the first Broadway performer who uses a wheelchair. The Tony nominee is drumming up a lot of buzz for her performance at the Circle in the Square Theatre as the girl who "cain't say no." Having been paralyzed from the chest down since the age of two, "no" is a word Stroker also rises up to combat in her own life. She recently stopped by Show People with Paul Wontorek to discuss her positivity, adding her own flair to a classic character, which celebs she'd love to see the show and more.
On this week's show, we sit down with Mary Testa and Ali Stroker, two of the stars of the upcoming Broadway revival of Oklahoma! We discuss what makes this production of Oklahoma! so unique and the enduring legacy of this magnificent show. This week's music: Damon Daunno singing “The Surrey With The Fringe On Top,” Nancy Walker singing “I Can Cook Too,” the Annie “Overture,” music from the “Ballet” and the “Final Outro” from the 1999 Royal National Theatre recording of Oklahoma! "On the roof of the school, Kyle – smart kid, almost valedictorian – exchanges messages with one, two, three girls on his phone. What a jerk! Or does he have an addiction? Trouble deepens when his girlfriend Amanda – who actually is valedictorian – arrives with smuggled champagne and Dixie cups. But what is her plan? Does it involve drinking champagne…or something far more devious?" STARRING: Troy Iwata and Ali Stroker. FOR MORE: www.lovevillehigh.com
Ali Stroker is unstoppable. We fell in love with her while she was on The Glee Project but in recent years has made history as the first person in a wheelchair on Broadway in the 2015 production of Deaf West’s Spring Awakening. From a very young age, all Ali has wanted to do is perform after the acting bug bit her when she was cast in a neighborhood production of Annie. She was recently seen in the off-Broadway production of Oklahoma! at St. Ann’s Warehouse, and can be heard in the upcoming podcast, Loveville High (lovevillehigh.com). In this episode, she speaks about disability awareness, representation, education, how she positively overcomes the daily struggles, and why she actually doesn’t prefer being called an ‘inspiration’ to others.
