He said although the children in these studies do not end up with very good hearing, “even a moderate hearing loss recovery in these kids is pretty astounding.” He added that many questions remain. They include how long the therapies will last and if hearing will continue to improve in the children. Some people question if gene therapy for deafness is ethical. Teresa Blankmeyer Burke is a professor who is deaf and who deals with medical ethics. She teaches at Gallaudet University, a university for deaf people in Washington, D.C. She said that there is no agreement about the need for gene therapy targeting deafness. She also pointed out that deafness does not cause severe or deadly illness. Blankmeyer Burke said that it is important to work with deaf community members about the importance of gene therapy. She added gene therapy is seen by many as a possible threat to “signing Deaf communities.” However, Chen said: “This is real proof showing gene therapy is working.” And he added, “It opens up the whole field.”

As Chinese users settle into their nightly routine on Xiaohongshu, they are overwhelmed by a flood of English-language content. Tens of thousands of self-proclaimed "TikTok refugees" from the United States have arrived at this Chinese app, which, even lacking an official English name, has been dubbed "Red Note" by US users. Hello everyone, my name is Ryan. I'm a TikTok refugee. The American government is banning TikTok, so we're looking for an alternative.…We're very sorry to interrupt you here. Hope we don't have to stay for too long," he said in a video posted on Monday, seemingly addressing the app's Chinese users.“大家好,我叫瑞安。我是一名TikTok难民。美国政府正在封禁TikTok,所以我们正在寻找替代品。……很抱歉在这里打扰大家。希望我们不用待太久。”1月13日,一名美国用户在小红书上发布的一段视频中说道,似乎是在对中国用户讲话。The video, which includes a Chinese translation read by a robot voice, received over 75,000 likes in one day. The growing belief in the US that the Supreme Court will uphold a law banning TikTok has left its 170 million US users frustrated. The ban is set to take effect on Sunday, unless TikTok is sold by its parent company, ByteDance, but a sale seems unlikely, as ByteDance has firmly stated it will not sell, despite interest from potential US buyers. As US users tag themselves as #tiktokrefugees, they are flocking to the Chinese app. By Tuesday, there were over 114,000 posts using the hashtag, with more than 2 million discussions and 73 million views as of 6 pm Beijing time. Xiaohongshu had become the most downloaded app on the US iOS app store on Tuesday. The second most downloaded app was Lemon8, another ByteDance-owned lifestyle platform, which is also experiencing a surge in traffic from displaced TikTok users.1月14日,小红书已成为美国iOS应用商店下载量最高的应用。 The flow of "TikTok refugees" is seen as a strong social media protest against the expected ban on TikTok, with the excuse of the so-called "China threat" to US information security, experts said. Cui Di, an associate professor at Fudan University's School of Journalism, said that the "refugee" label reflects TikTok users' dissatisfaction with the current political irrationality in the US. TikTok's global headquarters are in Los Angeles and Singapore, and its physical servers are owned by Oracle, a US company based in Texas. But the US remains prepared to ban it or force it to be sold, citing so-called national security concerns. TikTok has become an integral part of infrastructure, deeply influencing social culture. Many users rely on it for their livelihood, and their strong attachment to the platform leads them to consider themselves 'refugees' displaced from their home," Cui said.“TikTok已成为基础设施不可或缺的一部分,对社会文化产生了深远影响。许多用户依赖它谋生,他们对平台的强烈依恋让他们觉得自己是从家园流离失所的‘难民',”崔迪说。Xiang Debao, a professor of international communication at Beijing Foreign Studies University, said that this collective online movement serves as a protest against US policies, using satire to challenge US hegemony under the guise of "national security". Zheng Chuang, a research fellow at Shanghai International Studies University, said that the influx of US TikTok users also reflects a deep distrust of the US government and US tech companies. The TikTok ban or forced acquisition reflects a regressive cultural mindset," he said. "Even if TikTok disappears, more apps from China and elsewhere will rise in the global spotlight." Technological nationalism is self-deception, he added. Many of the new US influencers are breaking the language barrier by sharing pictures of their pet cats and dogs, and it seems that animals are proving to be the key to opening the door of communication. Some Chinese Xiaohongshu users have jokingly quipped that the app's new US users who wish to "stay here" must pay a "pet tax". I heard the Chinese citizens of Red Note are asking for a pet tax from all new American refugees. Here's my submission to the pet tax. I hope it will suffice," said @El Vampiro, a US user on Xiaohongshu, alongside a photo of his cats.“我听说小红书上的中国公民正在向所有新来的美国难民征收宠物税。这是我交的宠物税。希望它足够(抵税)了,”小红书上的美国用户@El Vampiro在一张自家的猫咪照片旁写道。"Well received. Here's your refund," replied a Chinese user under the post with her cat on the other side of the world.“收下了。这是你的退款,”地球另一端的一位中国用户在帖子下回复道,并附上了一张她的猫咪照片。Cultural shock文化冲击But not all cultural exchanges have a happy ending. Beijing-based user Yuzijiang faced a backlash from several US newcomers for "perpetuating prejudice, stereotyping, and cultural appropriation" of African American culture after posting a video of herself dancing with her curly hair. While many US users expressed support for her, criticizing that "America's cancel culture is already starting", the blogger ultimately wrote a long post in the comment section to apologize. She clarified that her hairstyle was not intended to offend, but was simply something she found aesthetically pleasing. Many Chinese users, however, have expressed discomfort with such encounters, fearing that US-driven political correctness, US-dominated ideology and many "unhealthy" subcultures, such as porn, gambling and drug-taking, might take root in the Chinese online environment. Cui from Fudan University said that the influx of "TikTok refugees" may be temporary. Since the political correctness landscape in the US differs greatly from that in China, in the long run, it would be difficult for US culture to take root in Chinese internet society and have a lasting impact on Xiaohongshu's ecosystem. Whether or not Xiaohongshu plans to take measures to protect its core user base, the arrival of TikTok refugees presents a unique opportunity for the platform to reassess its international strategy and expand into English-speaking countries beyond the Chinese cultural sphere, Cui added. alternativen.
The vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, proposed by President Xi Jinping in 2013, has evolved from an initiative into a world consensus and practice that has been increasingly recognized as the most important global public good with profound international significance, officials and experts said. The vision highlights the original mission of the Communist Party of China, namely striving for the happiness of the Chinese people and for the progress of mankind, and points the way for major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics on the new journey, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.By integrating the fundamental interests of the Chinese people with those of people worldwide, and linking China's future with the common interests of the whole world, it transcends differences in social systems and ideologies, and bridges disparities in history, culture and development stages, Wang said.It is China's solution to the question of what kind of world to build and how to build it, Wang said in Beijing on Thursday at the unveiling ceremony of a research center on building a community with a shared future for mankind.Over the past decade or so, President Xi has, on many occasions, given high priority to the vision, saying that the international community is increasingly becoming an interconnected community with a shared future and no country can remain unaffected in the changing and turbulent world. To date, dozens of countries and regions have joined China in building various forms of shared communities. Multilateral cooperation such as building a global community of health for all, building a community with a shared future in cyberspace, and building a community of life for mankind and nature, is advancing steadily. The vision has also been included in the resolutions of the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly for eight consecutive years. Zhang Jun, China's former permanent representative to the UN, said that the vision, advocating unity and cooperation, helps to bridge divisions, rebuild trust and establish a common foundation to jointly address global challenges. "It stands in stark contrast to the unilateralism, decoupling and exclusive practices promoted by certain countries and individuals, which positions China's diplomacy on the moral high ground," he said.Noting that the vision draws wisdom from the rich legacy of traditional Chinese culture, such as valuing peace and universal harmony and putting righteousness first, Xu Bu, former president of the China Institute of International Studies, said it will contribute to the progress of human civilization."China's advocacy for humanity's shared values of peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy and freedom, differing from the universal values championed by Western countries, truly represents the aspirations of the broader international community, particularly developing countries," he added.Zhang Weiwei, director of the China Institute of Fudan University, said: "More and more countries come to realize that the vision is in line with the common interests of all mankind, and represents the greatest common denominator of people from all countries to build a better world."He noted that China is one of the countries that has truly found its way to success and achieved its development through peace rather than violence and plunder, which he said was a remarkable feat.China has put forward the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative since 2021, offering its wisdom and solutions to improve world governance and respond to global challenges. He expressed the belief that more and more nations will recognize the significance of China's ideas and learn from the second-largest economy.Hu Jiping, vice-president of the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, said that in a world where major powers are increasingly mired in conflicts and cooperation is hindered, the vision champions a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice and win-win cooperation, which is critical for global peace and development. The vision also manifests China's responsibility as a major power, he said, adding that Beijing has played a positive and constructive role in facilitating peace talks and resolving international and regional hot spot issues."China's development is a beacon of hope for humanity, and the vision is not an empty slogan but a tangible path toward development," said Yang Guangbin, dean of the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China, when talking about the Belt and Road Initiative, which serves as a platform for practicing the vision."For instance, under the BRI, Chinese companies have helped countries in South America and Africa build digital communication technologies," he said, adding that this has enabled many developing nations to leap into the information age almost overnight. So far, 155 countries and over 30 international organizations have signed Belt and Road cooperation agreements with China. Statistics showed that in the first three quarters of 2024, the total trade volume under the BRI was $1.57 trillion, an increase of 4.53 percent compared with the previous year.Chen Zhimin, a professor at Fudan University's School of International Relations and Public Affairs, said that facing a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, China has put forward the concept of science and technology for good and further enriched the practice of building a community with a shared future for mankind.
Send us a textChina and the EU ended 2024 in something of a tricky situation as the row over electric vehicle tariffs threatens to undo much of the good will built up by Xi Jinping's summer trip to Europe, and visits to Beijing by a number of EU leaders over the past 12 months. So with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties coming up in May of 2025 just where do relations stand between two of the world's biggest trading partners? To find out, on this edition of The Agenda, Juliet Mann speaks to John Alistair Clarke, Former Director for International Affairs at the EU Commission & former head of the EU delegation to the WTO and UN, Yin Zhiguang, Professor of international politics at Fudan University and Finnish MP and former minister of Transport, Timo Harakka.
In this special episode, we speak with Professor Haim Zvi Dotan. Prof Dotan embodies the intersection of innovation, artistry, and forward-thinking design. He's an internationally renowned architect, poet, educator, and futurist. He's the visionary mind behind the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge- the world's first, longest, and highest glass-bottom bridge - a stunning architectural marvel that has become an iconic landmark in China and a symbol of bold innovation worldwide. He's been recognized for his groundbreaking contributions, earning numerous honors, including the title of “Honorary Citizen of Zhangjiajie” and the prestigious iNNOVEX Global Leader of Innovation Award. Beyond his architectural accomplishments, he's a dedicated educator, sharing his expertise as a professor at leading institutions like Fudan University, the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, and the DeTao Masters Academy. And above all of this, he's truly a special spirit. We discuss: • The concept of time and the journey of life • Prof. Dotan's belief that every person is a genius if they connect to their inner soul and DNA • The role of education in connecting students to their inner wisdom and the importance of passion and curiosity in achieving success. • How creativity is linked to being fully aware of the now • The concept of being a "startup nation" and how everyone has a unique mission and passion that they should follow • The importance of following one's passion and not being afraid to explore different paths in life • Prof. Dotan's passion for being a bridge between people and how this has shaped his career and life • The importance of being oneself and not trying to fit into societal expectations or the expectations of others. • And much more! This episode is dedicated to Miri Perlman, a 25-year-old student of Professor Dotan who passed away unexpectedly. Shortly before her passing, Miri attended Professor Dotan's workshop, “Green Cities and Smart Building” at HIT. During the workshop, she drew a portrait of Professor Dotan, and he captured a photo of her while drawing. Tragically, this photo turned out to be the last picture taken of her alive. In many ways, this episode is a reminder of how fragile life truly is, and how important it is to truly try to tap into the best version of ourselves and do the best with what we have because we only have one life. We hope you listen to this unique episode.
New York resident and author, Flora Qian was born and raised in Shanghai but has lived in Singapore and Hong Kong, where her ancestors had lived, and in Washington D.C. before settling in New York. This cross cultural and multilingual experience influenced her debut novel, “South of the Yangtze.” At once a coming-of-age story and a meditation on language itself, South of the Yangtze is Flora Qian's award-winning debut novel that follows Yinan Qian, a girl growing up in Shanghai at the turn of the century. Set against China's rapidly changing political, economic, and social environment from the 1980s to current day, South of the Yangtze is a thoughtful reflection on both physical migration and migration between languages. Layered with history, it provides a moving portrait of China's only child generation and the meaning of identity. In an interview, Qian could discuss: WRITING: · South of the Yangtze is fiction but draws from Flora's life experiences. Did this make it easier or more difficult to find Yinan's “voice” while writing? · With language being such a central theme to South of the Yangtze, why did Flora choose to write the book in English? · The book frequently references Chinese words and history. How did Flora balance explanation for an audience that may not be well-versed in Chinese culture while remaining authentic to her vision? · Which books have influenced Flora the most as a writer? In South of the Yangtze, Dream of the Red Chamber has a special place for Yinan and her friend, Jie. What is its significance? CHINESE CULTURE & LANGUAGE: · Her experiences growing up in China during the only-child mandate, which lasted from 1979 to 2015. · Flora has lived in Shanghai and Hong Kong, as well as the United States. What were the major cultural differences? Did they inspire South of the Yangtze in any way? · Did Flora's experience living in Hong Kong during the protests of 2019 – 2020 influence South of the Yangtze? · What it was like to witness enormous socioeconomic shifts in China through her childhood and into her adulthood. · One of the book's main themes is how language shapes thought. With Chinese being one of the oldest living languages, is it especially poised to do so? Why did Flora choose to write the book in English? · Given how rapid the changes to China were following the Cultural Revolution, how does South of the Yangtze preserve a specific and unique moment in China's history? · There are frequent references to Chinese folktales in the novel. How do they play a role in Flora's writing life? · One of the early relationships the protagonist has in South of the Yangtze is with her Mandarin-speaking teacher, who was also an activist in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protest. What is the significance of this character and their relationship? · Migration is one of the central themes in South of the Yangtze. Yinan is an emigrant (from China) and Simon is a first-generation Chinese American. They seem to share a special connection. How does Flora's experience of being an emigrant inform the novel? Sherylbass999@gmail.com or sheryl@mckinneymediagroup.com FLORA QIAN was born and raised in Shanghai. She received a bachelor's degree in English from Fudan University in 2005. China's growing ties with Latin America are back in the spotlight, as President Xi Jinping made a trip to Peru and Brazil on multiple missions. China says it is committed to forging friendly, mutually beneficial relations with Latin America with no strings attached. However, strategic rivalry is the mindset with which the US is viewing China's presence in the region. Some US officials are openly warning that China is “on the 20-yard line to our homeland”.What is bringing China and Latin America closer? Is the US getting too sensitive about China-Latin America relations? U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has already indicated that the Middle East is going to be a central focus of his second term's foreign policy. He's already named Elise Stefanik, a fiercely pro-Israel lawmaker, to be his ambassador at the United Nations and he's been in regular contact since his election last week with both Arab and Israeli leaders. But Trump is coming back to power at a time when the region is very different than when he left office in 2020. Back then, China was a marginal player in Mideast diplomacy which is no longer the case. China's economic and diplomatic influence in the region has increased significantly over the past four years. In this special edition, produced in partnership with The ChinaMed Project, Eric hosts six of the world's leading China-Mideast scholars to discuss their forecast for how Donald Trump's re-election will impact U.S.-China relations in the region. The conversation is divided into two parts: Panel 1: How the arrival of a new U.S. President fits in the national strategies of regional actors and their relations with China Ahmed Aboudouh is the head of the China studies unit at the Emirates Policy Center and an associate fellow at the Chatham House in London. Gedaliah Afterman is the head of the Asia-Israel policy program at the Abba Eban Institute for Diplomacy and Foreign Relations and a lecturer at Reichman University and Tel Aviv University. Jonathan Fulton is an assistant professor of political science at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi and a nonresident senior fellow for the Atlantic Council's Middle East Programs and the Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative. Panel 2: How a new US President will/might shape US-China relations in the Middle East Dawn Murphy is an associate professor of national security strategy at the U.S. National War College. Zhang Chuchu is an associate professor of international relations in the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Fudan University in Shanghai and she is the deputy director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Fudan University. Mohammed Al Alsudairi is a lecturer in politics and international relations of the Arabic speaking world at the Australian National University in Canberra. China says the European Union ruling on tariffs for Chinese electric vehicles failed to address concerns from industries; Beijing also pledged an open attitude in cooperation between auto industries(01:04). Finland's president has spoken with students and faculty at Fudan University in Shanghai as part of his state visit to China(10:51). And Lebanon has expressed hope for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah under a U.S. backed plan(16:30).
President Xi Jinping and Finnish President Alexander Stubb lauded the development of the China-Finland relationship over decades during their talks in Beijing on Tuesday, and agreed to deepen practical cooperation as well as expand people-to-people exchanges for greater progress in bilateral ties.Stubb, who took office in March, started his four-day state visit to China on Monday, which marked the 74th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.Finland was one of the first Western countries to establish diplomatic ties with China and the first Western country to sign an intergovernmental trade agreement with China.Xi said that China and Finland have respected and trusted each other over the years, setting a fine example of state-to-state relations that transcend historical, cultural and institutional differences. The economic ties between China and Finland are robust, with Finland currently being China's third-largest Nordic trade partner and China being Finland's largest trade partner in Asia for several consecutive years. Last year, the two-way trade volume reached $8.2 billion.Xi told Stubb that China welcomes Finland to actively participate in China's modernization drive and to expand cooperation in emerging industries such as green transition, the digital economy and new energy. He also announced China's decision to implement a unilateral visa-free policy for Finland, saying that more Finnish friends are welcome to start businesses, travel and study in China.Noting that both China and Finland are peace-loving nations that advocate multilateralism and free trade, Xi called on the two countries to jointly address issues such as climate change and the governance of artificial intelligence, in order to promote an equal and orderly multipolar world.Recalling his meeting with Xi in 2009, Stubb said the world was a very different place back then, and China has grown in the past 15 years in a way that was unimaginable for many. The Finnish president said his country adheres to the one-China principle and values China's important influence and its stabilizing and constructive role in international affairs.Noting that China and the European Union are closely interconnected in terms of economy, Stubb said the "decoupling and disruption of industrial and supply chains" or a new Cold War would not serve the interests of any party.Finland is willing to play an active role in promoting the smooth development of EU-China relations, he added. The two leaders also exchanged in-depth views on issues including the Ukraine crisis and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Xi said that China is ready to make joint efforts with Finland and other relevant parties to continue working for a peaceful settlement. After their talks, Xi and Stubb witnessed the signing of multiple cooperation documents covering areas such as education, environmental protection and the circular economy, and issued a joint working plan to advance the China-Finland future-oriented new-type cooperative partnership.Wang Yiwei, a professor at Renmin University of China's School of International Studies and director of the university's Institute of International Affairs, said this is the first time that a Finnish president is visiting China since the Nordic country officially became a NATO member last year.Wang noted that Finland and some European countries are looking forward to learning from China's experience in green transition and the digital economy, given the country's remarkable achievements in recent years."The two sides enjoy great potential for cooperation in environmental protection and climate response," he said.On Tuesday, Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, also met separately with Stubb in Beijing.Vice-President Han Zheng and the Finnish president attended the 5th China-Finland Committee for Innovative Business Cooperation Meeting in Beijing, along with more than 100 government and business representatives from the two countries.During his trip, Stubb will make a stop in Shanghai, where he will visit Fudan University and attend a business summit, among other things. The last time a Finnish president visited China was five years ago. In 2019, then president of Finland Sauli Niinisto led a Finnish delegation to Beijing.
In this episode of the IJGC podcast, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Pedro Ramirez is joined by Drs. Rongyu Zang and Yulian Chen to discuss the SOC-1 trial. Dr. Rongyu Zang is the Director of the Department of Gynecologic Oncology, Fudan University Zhongshan Hospital, & Institute for Ovarian Cancer, Fudan University and is the Principal investigator of the SOC-1 and SUNNY trials. Dr. Yulian Chen is an Attending Physician at the Department of Gynecologic Oncology, Fudan University Zhongshan Hospital. Highlights: The SOC-1 trial concluded that in patients with platinum-sensitive, relapsed ovarian cancer, surgery did not increase overall survival in the intention-to-treat population, but resulted in a prolongation of survival after adjustment of crossover. Surgery may provide an obviously higher proportion of long-term relapse-free survivors than chemotherapy alone. An active preoperative evaluation for all patients with platinum-sensitive first relapsed ovarian cancer is suggested in specialized centers.

For much of the past thirty years, since the end of the Cold War, the United States has been largely unrivaled in its power in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. Today, that is no longer the case as the U.S. faces new challenges both from regional powers like Iran and Saudi Arabia as well as international competitors, including China and Russia. This transition to multipolarity is transforming the region and served as the thesis of a special edition of the academic journal Middle East Policy that came out earlier this year. Three of the journal's editors on this project, Andrea Ghiselli from Fudan University in Shanghai, University of Naples China scholar Enrico Fardella, and Durham University international relations professor Anoushiravan Ehteshami, join Eric to discuss how the different countries in the region are adapting to the Sino-U.S. rivalry. In 2009, Fudan University launched China's first MFA program in creative writing, spurring a wave of such programs in Chinese universities. Many of these programs' founding members point to the Iowa Writers Workshop and, specifically, its International Writers Program, which invited dozens of Mainland Chinese writers to take part between 1979 and 2019, as their inspiration. In her book, The Transpacific Flow: Creative Writing Programs in China (Association for Asian Studies, 2024), Jin Feng explores why Chinese authors took part in the U.S. programs, and how they tried to implement its teaching methods in mainland China–clearly, a very different political and cultural environment. China and the European Union underlined their shared commitment to deepening green cooperation during the latest round on Tuesday of a high-level dialogue on the environment and climate, with analysts urging both sides to properly handle differences to ensure that bilateral collaboration is not undermined by protectionism.Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang and Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Maros Sefcovic co-chaired the fifth High-Level Environment and Climate Dialogue between China and the EU at the EU's headquarters in Brussels. The dialogue was first held in 2020.The vice-premier noted that China and the EU share extensive common interests and broad space for cooperation in green transformation, saying that both sides should fully leverage the high-level dialogue mechanism, seek common ground while setting aside differences, and deepen the China-EU green partnership."We need to tap the potential for cooperation in key areas and strengthen mutual learning in areas such as green energy, green and low-carbon technologies, plastic pollution control, and chemical environmental management," Ding said.He also stressed that the EU's plan to impose additional duties on imports of Chinese electric vehicles is typical protectionism. The European Commission has said it will impose extra duties of up to 38.1 percent on imported Chinese-made electric vehicles starting in July. This is not conducive to the green transformation of the EU and would undermine global cooperation on climate change, Ding told Sefcovic.Ding expressed his hope that the EU will avoid economic and trade friction that could delay the green transition process, and said that green barriers that would interfere with normal economic and trade cooperation should not be established. The two sides should resolve trade friction through dialogue and consultation, Ding said, adding that China is firm in its resolve to safeguard its legitimate and lawful interests.Jian Junbo, deputy director of the Center for China-Europe Relations at Fudan University's Institute of International Studies, said the additional tariffs imposed on Chinese-made EVs is a negative approach taken by the EU."Such a practice reflects the EU's anxiety between its green development aspirations and its economic protectionist measures," Jian said, adding that it will have negative effects on green cooperation between China and the EU.Sefcovic said the EU is willing to deepen cooperation with China in areas such as tackling climate change and protecting ecology, and to lead global environmental and climate governance. He noted that the EU attaches great importance to the development of the electric vehicle industry and is willing to properly handle differences with China through dialogue.Jian, of the Center for China-Europe Relations, said that the high-level communication mechanism between China and the EU has demonstrated the strong will of both sides and can play a leading role in bilateral environment and climate cooperation. In addition to intergovernmental dialogue and coordination on specific policies, broader participation from businesses is also essential in deepening bilateral cooperation, Jian said.More institutions and companies should be involved in bilateral dialogues and jointly make standards for the green industry, he added.Beyond bilateral dialogue and cooperation, China and the EU, which are pivotal leaders and driving forces in global green development, have substantial room for collaboration involving multilateral platforms, such as the United Nations, he said. The two sides should intensify exchanges and strengthen coordination on the principles, objectives and financing of climate change governance, he added.Reporter: Zhou JinXinhua contributed to this story.

The US' decision to impose additional tariffs on Chinese imports marks a further escalation in Washington's efforts to curb emerging industries in China, forcing Beijing to adopt measures to defend its interests, said analysts and heads of business associations on Thursday.5月16日,分析师和商业协会负责人表示,美国决定对中国进口商品征收额外关税标志着华盛顿遏制中国新兴产业的举措进一步升级,迫使北京方面采取措施捍卫其利益。In addition to the existing tariffs under the Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974, the US announced on Tuesday additional tariffs on a range of Chinese imports, including electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, photovoltaic cells, critical minerals, semiconductors, steel and aluminum. Notably, a World Trade Organization panel found in September 2020 that the Section 301 tariffs contravened its regulations. After China's Ministry of Commerce vowed to take resolute measures to safeguard the rights and interests of Chinese companies, market watchers said that China has many options to counter Washington's actions that may not necessarily target US industrial goods, but could focus on other sectors. The US' protectionist measures could reignite a "trade conflict "with China and damage the US economy in the process. Since tariffs essentially tax US businesses and consumers by raising the cost of imported goods, this could lead to inflation and harm job growth, said Wu Xinbo, dean of Fudan University's Institute of International Studies. In the short term, the US might seem aggressive in its efforts to target emerging Chinese industries, but this approach is unlikely to yield practical results in the long run, said Chen Bin, deputy director of the expert committee at the Beijing-based China Machinery Industry Federation. As China has already taken the lead in the new energy sector, with the largest industry chain globally, additional tariffs cannot fundamentally alter the inherent comparative advantages of the Chinese manufacturers, he said. Dismissing the "China overcapacity" narrative, He Yadong, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, told a news conference that the so-called "overcapacity" perceived by some Western countries is not an excess of capacity but rather an excess of anxiety. It shows worries of some countries about their own competitiveness and market share, which they use as a pretext to discredit and suppress China, said He. According to research by the Paris-headquartered International Energy Agency, to achieve carbon neutrality goals, annual global sales of new energy vehicles need to reach about 45 million units by 2030. This is more than three times the global sales in 2023, far exceeding the current global supply capacity. As technology products in the new energy sector are updated and iterated more rapidly, new demand will continually emerge, said He. Overall, the global new energy industry is still in its early stages of development and rapid growth. Rather than overcapacity, there is a relative shortage of production capacity," he said. Sun Xiaohong, secretary-general of auto branch of the Beijing-based China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products, said that share of Chinese EVs exported to the US is fairly small compared to other markets. The number of Chinese EVs exported to the US sharply declined to fewer than 2,000 units in the first quarter of this year, cutting the US market's share of China's global EV exports to less than 0.5 percent, data from the General Administration of Customs showed. 0.5%With such a minimal export volume, the impact of US tariff increases on Chinese EVs is essentially negligible, said Sun. In a statement released by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade on Wednesday, industries like EVs, lithium-ion batteries and photovoltaic cells in China are at the forefront of technological innovation and market competition, deeply embedding themselves in global supply chains and making significant contributions to global efforts in energy conservation and sustainable growth. Concurrently, the US government is providing significant subsidies to domestic industries like EVs and semiconductors, a move that starkly contradicts the principles of a market-driven economy and international trade norms, and threatens the stability and security of global industrial and supply chains, according to the statement.

It wasn't that long ago the Persian Gulf was a no-go zone for Chinese diplomacy. Back then, China didn't source much energy from Gulf countries, and its diplomats were ill-equipped to handle the region's contentious politics. That is no longer the case. The six member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council collectively form one of China's largest trading blocs anywhere in the world... and not just for energy. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and others are now major destinations for Chinese investment in tech, autos, and other non-oil sectors. But this relationship is still relatively new and often poorly understood by outsiders. The team at the ChinaMed Project issued a new report this month that provides a helpful country-by-country overview of the key issues that frame China's ties in the Persian Gulf. Enrico Fardella, director of the ChinaMed Project and an associate professor at the University of Naples, along with Andrea Ghiselli, the ChinaMed Project's research director and an assistant professor at Fudan University in Shanghai, join Eric and Cobus to discuss the different narratives about how Chinese and Gulf stakeholders view one another. Understanding Person-Centered Care for Older Adults in Six Developing Countries: China [Episode 2] Download the Transcript The impact of population aging is universally recognized and has been extensively studied in wealthier, developed nations. But we know much less about how aging is experienced in low- and middle-income countries and how developing countries are responding to the current challenges created by the aging of their populations. The rapid rate of population aging in many developing countries—fueled by falling fertility rates and a shift in the predominance of chronic diseases rather than acute and infectious illnesses—has left little time to anticipate and prepare for the consequences of aging populations. The GSA Interest Group on Common Data Elements for International Research in Residential Long-term Care has developed a limited podcast series to provide insights into how culture, competing population health priorities, political conflict, and resource limitations influence older adults, their families, and paid/formal caregivers in six nations along a trajectory of national development, including Brazil, China, East Jerusalem, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Thailand. Guest: Honglin Chen, PhD Dr. Chen is currently a professor of gerontological social work at the University of Eastern Finland. She has been doing research and teaching in aging policy and practice field as a Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Social Work at Fudan University in Shanghai, China for 20 years. Development implies not just growth over a significant period of time but also progressive changes in the structure of an economy. Many influential scholars have identified the crucial role of property rights and the importance of constraining the power of the state while others highlight the importance of political settlements, development clusters, and inclusive economic and political institutions.Shiping Tang is Fudan Distinguished Professor and Dr. Seaker Chan Chair Professor at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Fudan University, China. In his latest book, The Institutional Foundation of Economic Development: A systemic account of how institutions shape economic development, he argues that institutions play a pivotal role in shaping and influencing economic development through four key factors: possibility, incentive, capability, and opportunity. In addition, his framework encompasses six significant dimensions: political hierarchy, property rights, social mobility, redistribution, innovation protection, and equal opportunity. Sustained economic development, however, necessitates not only a robust institutional foundation but also strong state capacity and well-crafted socioeconomic policies.Key highlightsIntroduction – 00:24What is economic development? - 03:15The development-democracy linkage - 05:19Why established understandings of institutions are incomplete - 11:30The institutional foundations of economic development - 14:45The new development triangle - 21:02Explaining China's economic success - 25:40Power and influence of local leaders in China - 34:23Achieving sustained economic growth – 44:10 HostProfessor Dan Banik (@danbanik @GlobalDevPod)Apple Google Spotify YouTubeSubscribe: https://globaldevpod.substack.com/

Wendy Wu's motto is: Where there's a will, there's a way. It's taken her far—from Microsoft to Google, and now to software developer SailPoint, where she is the Chief Marketing Officer.Wendy believes that “you have to be the owner of your own career,” and that means defining what you want outside of your current role. She tells us about the time she did just that at Microsoft when her position was eliminated and she had to create a new position for herself.“Oftentimes a job description just tells you the status quo for today,” says Wendy, who grew up in China. “It doesn't tell you what's going to be next for you, so always extend yourself into other areas that may set you up for longer-term success.” We chat about three keys to defining your career and Wendy encourages us to seek help along the way!Theme: Know What You WantEpisode Highlights:Work life blend vs work life balanceAlways give your best effort at work and lifeGo beyond the job descriptionCreate your own opportunitiesTalk to others about their jobsTry out a role and pivoting as necessaryBe aware of how you feel Volunteer to develop new skillsAsk for help along the wayWendy's Bio:Wendy Wu brings over 20 years of experience in B2B enterprise marketing to her role at SailPoint as the company's Chief Marketing Officer. The Belt-and-Road Initiative (BRI) has reached the ripe old age of 10 this month. Those 10 years have seen a lot of change, including on topics like the relative focus on clean energy versus fossil fuels and the interest in and incentives for applying ESG criteria to BRI investments. Today we are joined by frequent guest and longtime friend of the pod, Professor Christoph Nedopil-Wang. This year he became the Director Griffith Asia Institute and is also Professor at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. Previously, he was Associate Professor and Director of the Green Finance & Development Center, Fudan University. He previous worked in Beijing at the International Institute of Green Finance (IIGF), as well as at GIZ. Cheat sheet: Q: Was the 1H 2023 really the greenest ever, as Reuters summarized? (A: Reuters focused on energy sector, where change most evident, though oil & gas investments are big and lumpy, so can't just look at 1H. "Small and beautiful" green investments becoming more common.) Q: Is energy becoming greener just because fossils falling, but renewables not picking up as much? (A: Both declining coal share and growing renewables, but renewables need much stronger growth.) Q: Why is state-owned sector declining and private sector going up? Is that due to SOEs focusing on domestic investment to respond to downturn? (A: Perhaps, but also because private firms now much stronger, and battery-related giants investing in big projects.) Q: What about mining for battery materials, is there more investment in value-creating parts of that supply chain in Africa, or is it all being processed elsewhere? (A: Yes, but need to be cautious on environmental impact of local processing and whether local firms or communities actually capture value.) Q: What is the situation with Chinese basic ESG principles (disclosure, community involvement) being applied on the BRI, as opposed to just meeting minimum local standards? (A: Not so good, for the power sector case studies they looked at.) China's critics contend the Belt and Road Initiative is dead or dying due to a mix of gross mismanagement and hubris. The data, however, reveals a very different story. While lending has definitely decreased considerably from its peak in 2016, the BRI is very much alive -- it just looks very different today than it did even a few years ago.Instead of expensive large-scale infrastructure projects in Africa, the Americas, and Asia, Chinese lenders are now focusing more on smaller initiatives related to technology, renewable energy, and connectivity. In fact, Chinese creditors lent more money to finance green energy initiatives in the first half of the year than in any other 6-month period since the BRI launched a decade ago.Christoph Nedopil, founding director of the Green Finance and Development Center at Fudan University has been closely tracking the evolution of the BRI and joins Eric & Cobus to discuss what the latest data on BRI lending reveals about its future.JOIN THE DISCUSSION:X: @ChinaGSProject| @stadenesque | @eric_olander | @nedopilLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/nedopilFacebook: www.facebook.com/ChinaAfricaProjectYouTube: www.youtube.com/@ChinaGlobalSouthFOLLOW CAP IN FRENCH AND ARABIC:Français: www.projetafriquechine.com | @AfrikChineعربي: www.akhbaralsin-africia.com | @AkhbarAlSinAfrJOIN US ON PATREON!Become a CAP Patreon member and get all sorts of cool stuff, including our Week in Review report, an invitation to join monthly Zoom calls with Eric & Cobus, and even an awesome new CAP Podcast mug!www.patreon.com/chinaafricaprojectSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
