Dylan and Connor are joined by Tony Award-winner Marissa Jaret Winokur (Hairspray, Celebrity Big Brother). You can't stop the beat, nor the DRAMA! Marissa is currently reuniting with her fellow Hairspray leading ladies Kerry Butler and friend of the pod Laura Bell Bundy for Mama I'm a Big Girl Now, which is her first time back on a New York stage since performing as Tracy Turnblad. We gag over this heartwarming and hilarious show, dreams to take it on the road, and Matthew Morrison's recent cameo in it. Marissa reveals how many times she's seen the Wicked movie, diving into her close relationship with the three Grande divas: Joan, Frankie, and Ariana. She gushes over seeing Patti LuPone in Evita at a formative time, and even spills on what Harvey Fierstein whispered to her the moment she won the 2003 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. We go behind the scenes on Celebrity Big Brother (Ross Mathews! Omarosa Manigault Newman!), Dancing with the Stars, and motherhood in Hollywood. Marissa is a beacon of light, wisdom, positivity, and JOY! We've loved her forever, and you will too. Today Alexa is joined by Robert ‘Bob' Marks, a voice teacher, coach, conductor, arranger, author and director. His extensive career has seen him act as a musical director for over 200 productions and his clients have included Ariana Grande, Ricky Lake, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Britney Spears, and Ashley Tisdale. His writings have appeared in the Journal of Singing and he has recently published the book 88 Keys to Successful Singing Performances with co-author Dr Elizabeth Gerbi. KEY TAKEAWAYS Bob saw his first musical theatre performance on Broadway when he was five years old. It was Jerry Herman's first show called Milk and Honey. Bob was much more enthralled with the conductor and the orchestra players than he was with what was happening on stage. Bob worked with many stars before they became famous. At the time when Natalie Portman saw him, she hadn't won an Oscar. Britney Spears was sent to Bob by her agent because she had an audition for Les Misérables. Ariana Grande was the younger sister of Frankie Grande who was Bob's student and had just landed a role in Mama Mia on Broadway. It's a wonderful thing to be in control of your own audition with self-tapes. You don't have to deal with a stranger at the piano or worry about tempo as you know what you're singing with. Bob's book is a collection of 88 short chapters, hence its title: 88 Keys to Successful Singing Performances. People can just read a chapter or two at a time and get what they need. His book covers vocal health, dealing with voice teachers, finding a voice teacher, finding a coach, and preparing music for the accompanist. BEST MOMENTS‘I learned a lot. I learned from my mistakes. I learned by my successes'‘Now we know that the idea that if you sing opera, you can sing everything is not necessarily true'‘Once people know who you are, they start calling' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: www.BobMarks.com Social Media: Handle: @bobmarks Book Link: https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1945586311/robertmarksprofe Relevant Links & Mentions: Sheet Music: www.musicnotes.com Dr Elizabeth Gerbi: https://www.elizabethgerbi.com/ The Voice Foundation: https://voicefoundation.org/ ABOUT THE GUEST Robert (“Bob") Marks is a voice teacher, coach, conductor, arranger, author, and director. Join the lads this week as they discuss OPI Nail Varnish for dogs, the best way to get a man's hands on your 'package' and John makes a Dogs Dinner of naming the Ivy League Schools. We're talking Legally Blonde! --- Join us on the Socials: Twitter Instagram Facebook Support the show (Buy me a Coffee) --- Legally Blonde is a 2001 American comedy film directed by Robert Luketic in his feature-length directorial debut. Written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith from Amanda Brown's 2001 novel of the same name, it stars Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber, and Jennifer Coolidge. Witherspoon plays Elle Woods, a sorority girl who attempts to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III by getting a Juris Doctor degree at Harvard Law School, and in the process, overcomes stereotypes against blondes and triumphs as a successful lawyer through unflappable self-confidence and fashion/beauty knowhow. The outline of Legally Blonde originated from Brown's experiences as a blonde going to Stanford Law School while being obsessed with fashion and beauty, reading Elle magazine, and frequently clashing with the personalities of her peers. In 2000, Brown met producer Marc Platt, who helped her develop her manuscript into a novel. Platt brought in screenwriters McCullah Lutz and Smith to adapt the book into a motion picture. The project caught the attention of director Luketic, an Australian newcomer who came to Hollywood on the success of his quirky debut short film Titsiana Booberini. "I had been reading scripts for two years, not finding anything I could put my own personal mark on, until Legally Blonde came around," Luketic said. The film was released on July 13, 2001, and was a hit with audiences, grossing $141 million worldwide on an $18 million budget, as well as receiving moderately positive reviews from critics, with particular praise going to Witherspoon's performance. It was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy. Witherspoon received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and the 2002 MTV Movie Award for Best Female Performance. The box office success led to a series of films: a 2003 sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, and a 2009 direct-to-DVD spin-off, Legally Blondes. Additionally, Legally Blonde: The Musical premiered on January 23, 2007, in San Francisco and opened in New York City at the Palace Theatre on Broadway on April 29, 2007, starring Laura Bell Bundy. In May 2020, it was announced that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were signed to write a third film.[3] In October 2020, MGM Studios confirmed via their official social media that Legally Blonde 3 is planned for release in May 2022.[4]

Outside of New York City her credits include the national tour of The Sound of Music, and Gypsy at Paper Mill Playhouse. She has toured in concerts worldwide since 2010, released several studio albums, and penned hundreds of songs. Along with her cohort Shea Charter, she co-hosts Women Of Tomorrow, a musical podcast that explores issues women are facing today, examines the history of those issues and provides solutions for moving forward. Their album Women of Tomorrow (which inspired the podcast) is out now and available everywhere you listen to music. Raised in Kentucky, Laura was 5 years old when she was introduced to show business as a beauty pageant contestant, which led to an unexpected modeling contract in NYC. But Laura realized really quickly that modeling was boring, and acting, singing and dancing were much more fun. Laura opens up about her early experiences in NYC as a child, renting out rooms in small apartments with her mom, and the cast of characters they encountered. She speaks passionately about the creation and mission of her album and podcast of the same name, Women of Tomorrow, and credits the work behind both for igniting her passion for learning more about women’s history. Laura also shares her thoughts on the important roles both truth and vulnerability play when you are an actor. In this episode, we talk about: Her experience in the world of beauty pageants The importance of self-awareness How the 2016 election inspired the creation of Women of Tomorrow How women’s rights have changed over time Her spiritual beliefs about our collective human experience Connect with LBB: Listen to Women of Tomorrow (the album) Listen to Women of Tomorrow (the podcast) IG: @laurabellbundy Twitter: @laurabellbundy Web: laurabellbundy.com YouTube channel Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Brand talks about the 2020/2021 schedule at Wharton Center and how it's been impacted by the pandemic. “As Covid-19 started to look like it was going to take a while to get under control and for a vaccine to be developed, we decided to move our entire fall schedule to the following winter and spring. That gives us more time to prepare our facilities for a safe experience. And now we're just waiting for the industry to say it's OK for all the actors and musicians to resume productions. Moving forward, the Wharton experience will be as touchless as possible. “There are a lot of moving parts even though we've announced the season, but we're getting a great response from our patrons. They want to make sure Wharton Center is thriving after we get through the pandemic. We feel good about the community support.” Brand talks about his strategy for booking shows and how he's often working three or four years ahead to make the Wharton schedule. “It's kind of like when your coaches are out looking for players. You're looking at high school players when they're freshmen and following them through four years watching how they develop. We do the same as your scouts do when we're out looking for artists. “And we're looking at other options where we could bring some of our productions into your home. We're looking at new ways of marketing and enjoying the performing arts. Our industry is going to have to start looking at out-of-the-theatre experiences.” Brand talks about the outreach mission of the Institute for Arts and Creativity and tells why two of his favorite visitors to Wharton Center are Laura Bell Bundy and Itzhak Perlman “because they really love talking with young people and ask if they can do that when they visit.” MSU Today airs Sunday mornings at 9:00 on 105.1 FM, AM 870, and your smart speaker.
